Ἐκκλησιαστής 9

1 Διότι άπαν τούτο εσκέφθην εν τη καρδία μου, διά να εξιχνιάσω άπαν τούτο, ότι οι δίκαιοι και οι σοφοί, και τα έργα αυτών, είναι εν χειρί Θεού· δεν υπάρχει άνθρωπος γνωρίζων, είτε αγάπη θέλει είσθαι είτε μίσος· τα πάντα είναι έμπροσθεν αυτών.

[I saw] that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: yes, there is no man that knows either love or hatred, [though] all are before their face.

2 Πάντα συμβαίνουσιν επίσης εις πάντας· εν συνάντημα είναι εις τον δίκαιον και εις τον ασεβή, εις τον αγαθόν και εις τον καθαρόν και εις τον ακάθαρτον, και εις τον θυσιάζοντα και εις τον μη θυσιάζοντα· ως ο αγαθός, ούτω και ο αμαρτωλός· ο ομνύων ως ο φοβούμενος τον όρκον.

Vanity is in all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good, and to the bad; both to the pure, and to the impure; both to him that sacrifices, and to him that sacrifice not: as is the good, so is the sinner: as is the swearer, even so is he that fears an oath.

3 Τούτο είναι το κακόν μεταξύ πάντων των γινομένων υπό τον ήλιον, ότι εν συνάντημα είναι εις πάντας· και μάλιστα η καρδία των υιών των ανθρώπων είναι πλήρης κακίας, και αφροσύνη είναι εν τη καρδία αυτών ενόσω ζώσι, και μετά ταύτα υπάγουσι προς τους νεκρούς.

There is this evil in all that is done under the sun, that there is one event to all: yes, the heart of the sons of men is filled with evil, and madness is in their heart during their life, and after that [they go] to the dead.

4 Διότι εις τον έχοντα κοινωνίαν μεταξύ πάντων των ζώντων είναι ελπίς· επειδή κύων ζων είναι καλήτερος παρά λέοντα νεκρόν.

for who is he that has fellowship with all the living? there is hope [of him]: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

5 Διότι οι ζώντες γνωρίζουσιν ότι θέλουσιν αποθάνει· αλλ' οι νεκροί δεν γνωρίζουσιν ουδέν ουδέ έχουσι πλέον απόλαυσιν· επειδή το μνημόσυνον αυτών ελησμονήθη.

For the living will know that they shall die: but the dead know nothing, and there is no longer any reward to them; for their memory is lost.

6 Έτι και η αγάπη αυτών και το μίσος αυτών και ο φθόνος αυτών ήδη εχάθη· και δεν θέλουσιν έχει πλέον εις τον αιώνα μερίδα εις πάντα όσα γίνονται υπό τον ήλιον.

also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, have now perished; yes, there is no portion for them any more for ever in all that is done under the sun.

7 Ύπαγε, φάγε τον άρτον σου εν ευφροσύνη και πίε τον οίνον σου εν ευθύμω καρδία· διότι ήδη ο Θεός ευαρεστείται εις τα έργα σου.

Go, eat your bread with mirth, and drink your wine with a joyful heart; for now God has favourably accepted your works.

8 Εν παντί καιρώ ας ήναι λευκά τα ιμάτιά σου· και έλαιον ας μη εκλείψη από της κεφαλής σου.

Let your garments be always white; and let not oil be lacking on your head.

9 Χαίρου ζωήν μετά της γυναικός, την οποίαν ηγάπησας, πάσας τας ημέρας της ζωής της ματαιότητός σου, αίτινες σοι εδόθησαν υπό τον ήλιον, πάσας τας ημέρας της ματαιότητός σου· διότι τούτο είναι η μερίς σου εν τη ζωή και εν τω μόχθω σου, τον οποίον μοχθείς υπό τον ήλιον.

And see life with the wife whom you love all the days of the life of your vanity, which are given you under the sun: for that is your portion in your life, and in your labor wherein you labor under the sun.

10 Πάντα όσα εύρη η χειρ σου να κάμη, κάμε κατά την δύναμίν σου· διότι δεν είναι πράξις ούτε λογισμός ούτε γνώσις ούτε σοφία εν τω άδη όπου υπάγεις. (Sheol h7585)

Whatsoever your hand shall find to do, do with all your might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Hades wither you go. (Sheol h7585)

11 Επέστρεψα και είδον υπό τον ήλιον, ότι ο δρόμος δεν είναι εις τους ταχύποδας, ουδέ ο πόλεμος εις τους δυνατούς, αλλ' ουδέ ο άρτος εις τους σοφούς, αλλ' ουδέ τα πλούτη εις τους νοήμονας, αλλ' ουδέ η χάρις εις τους αξίους· διότι καιρός και περίστασις συναντά εις πάντας αυτούς.

I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor yet bread to the wise, nor yet wealth to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of knowledge; for time and chance will happen to them all.

12 Διότι ουδέ ο άνθρωπος γνωρίζει τον καιρόν αυτού· καθώς οι ιχθύες οίτινες πιάνονται εν κακώ δικτύω, και καθώς τα πτηνά, τα οποία πιάνονται εν παγίδι, ούτω παγιδεύονται οι υιοί των ανθρώπων εν καιρώ κακώ όταν εξαίφνης επέλθη επ' αυτούς.

For surely man also knows not his time: as fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as birds that are caught in a snare; even thus the sons of men are snared at an evil time, when it falls suddenly upon them.

13 Και ταύτην την σοφίαν είδον υπό τον ήλιον, και εφάνη εις εμέ μεγάλη·

This I also saw [to be] wisdom under the sun, and it is great before me:

14 Ήτο μικρά πόλις και άνδρες εν αυτή ολίγοι· και ήλθε κατ' αυτής βασιλεύς μέγας και επολιόρκησεν αυτήν και ωκοδόμησεν εναντίον αυτής προχώματα μεγάλα·

[suppose there were] a little city, and few men in it; and there should come against it a great king, and surround it, and build great mounds against it;

15 αλλ' ευρέθη εν αυτή άνθρωπος πτωχός και σοφός, και αυτός διά της σοφίας αυτού ηλευθέρωσε την πόλιν· πλην ουδείς ενεθυμήθη τον πτωχόν εκείνον άνθρωπον.

and should find in it a poor wise man, and he should save the city through his wisdom: yet no man would remember that poor man.

16 Τότε εγώ είπα, Η σοφία είναι καλητέρα παρά την δύναμιν, αν και η σοφία του πτωχού καταφρονήται και οι λόγοι αυτού δεν εισακούωνται.

And I said Wisdom is better than power: yet the wisdom of the poor man is set at nothing, and his words not listened to.

17 Οι λόγοι των σοφών εν ησυχία ακούονται μάλλον παρά την κραυγήν του εξουσιάζοντος μετά αφρόνων.

The words of the wise are heard in quiet more than the cry of them that rule in folly.

18 Η σοφία είναι καλητέρα παρά τα όπλα του πολέμου· εις δε αμαρτωλός αφανίζει μεγάλα καλά.

Wisdom is better than weapons of war: and one sinner will destroy much good.
