Πραξεις 22

1 Άνδρες αδελφοί και πατέρες, ακούσατέ με απολογούμενον τώρα προς εσάς.

MEN, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my apology which I now offer unto you.

2 Ακούσαντες δε ότι ελάλει προς αυτούς εις την Εβραϊκήν διάλεκτον, έδειξαν περισσοτέραν ησυχίαν. Και είπεν·

Then when they heard that he spoke unto them in the Hebrew tongue, they kept the more silence: and he said,

3 Εγώ μεν είμαι άνθρωπος Ιουδαίος, γεγεννημένος εν Ταρσώ της Κιλικίας, ανατεθραμμένος δε εν τη πόλει ταύτη παρά τους πόδας του Γαμαλιήλ, πεπαιδευμένος κατά την ακρίβειαν του πατροπαραδότου νόμου, ζηλωτής ων του Θεού, καθώς πάντες σεις είσθε σήμερον·

I am indeed a Jewish man, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but educated in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, instructed accurately in the law of our fathers, being zealous for God, as ye all are this day:

4 όστις κατέτρεξα μέχρι θανάτου ταύτην την οδόν, δεσμεύων και παραδίδων εις φυλακάς άνδρας τε και γυναίκας,

so much so that I persecuted this way unto death, binding and delivering up to prisons both men and women.

5 καθώς και ο αρχιερεύς μαρτυρεί εις εμέ και όλον το πρεσβυτέριον· παρά των οποίων και επιστολάς λαβών προς τους αδελφούς, επορευόμην εις Δαμασκόν διά να φέρω δεδεμένους εις Ιερουσαλήμ και τους εκεί όντας, διά να τιμωρηθώσιν.

As also the high-priest will bear me witness, and all the body of elders: from whom also having received letters unto the brethren, I went unto Damascus, to bring those who were there in chains unto Jerusalem, that they might be punished.

6 Ενώ δε οδοιπορών επλησίαζον εις την Δαμασκόν, περί την μεσημβρίαν εξαίφνης έστραψε περί εμέ φως πολύ εκ του ουρανού,

But as I went and drew nigh to Damascus, at noon-day, suddenly there shone a great light from heaven around me.

7 και έπεσον εις το έδαφος και ήκουσα φωνήν λέγουσαν προς εμέ· Σαούλ, Σαούλ, τι με διώκεις;

And I fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

8 Εγώ δε απεκρίθην· Τις είσαι, Κύριε; Και είπε προς εμέ· Εγώ είμαι Ιησούς ο Ναζωραίος, τον οποίον συ διώκεις.

And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said to me, I am Jesus the Nazarean, whom thou persecutest.

9 Οι όντες δε μετ' εμού το μεν φως είδον και κατεφοβήθησαν, την φωνήν όμως του λαλούντος προς εμέ δεν ήκουσαν.

Now they who were with me saw the light indeed, and were terrified; but the voice of him that spake to me heard they not.

10 Και είπον· Τι να κάμω, Κύριε; Και ο Κύριος είπε προς εμέ· Σηκωθείς ύπαγε εις Δαμασκόν, και εκεί θέλει σοι λαληθή περί πάντων όσα είναι διωρισμένα να κάμης.

Then I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said to me, Arise, go into Damascus; and there information shall be given thee of all things which are ordained for thee to do.

11 Και επειδή εκ της λαμπρότητος του φωτός εκείνου δεν έβλεπον, χειραγωγούμενος υπό των όντων μετ' εμού ήλθον εις Δαμασκόν.

Then as I could no longer see through the dazzling brightness of that light, led by the hand of those who were with me, I came to Damascus.

12 Ανανίας δε τις, άνθρωπος ευσεβής κατά τον νόμον, μαρτυρούμενος υπό πάντων των εκεί κατοικούντων Ιουδαίων,

And one Ananias, a religious man according to the law, and in high repute with all the Jews dwelling there,

13 ήλθε προς εμέ και σταθείς επάνω μου μοι, είπε· Σαούλ αδελφέ, ανάβλεψον. Και εγώ τη αυτή ώρα ανέβλεψα εις αυτόν.

came to me, and standing by me, said, Brother Saul, recover sight. And the same hour I looked up at him.

14 Ο δε είπεν· Ο Θεός των πατέρων ημών σε διώρισε να γνωρίσης το θέλημα αυτού και να ίδης τον δίκαιον και να ακούσης φωνήν εκ του στόματος αυτού,

And he said, The God of our fathers hath predestinated thee to know his will, and to see the Just One, and to hear a voice from his mouth.

15 διότι θέλεις είσθαι μάρτυς περί αυτού προς πάντας τους ανθρώπους των όσα είδες και ήκουσας.

For thou shalt be a witness for him to all men, of the things which thou hast seen and heard.

16 Και τώρα τι βραδύνεις; σηκωθείς βαπτίσθητι και απολούσθητι από των αμαρτιών σου, επικαλεσθείς το όνομα του Κυρίου.

And now why delay? arise, to be baptised, and wash away thy sins, calling upon the name of the Lord.

17 Αφού δε υπέστρεψα εις Ιερουσαλήμ, ενώ προσηυχόμην εν τω ιερώ, ήλθον εις έκστασιν

Now it came to pass, that, when I had returned to Jerusalem, and was praying in the temple, that I was in a trance;

18 και είδον αυτόν λέγοντα προς εμέ· Σπεύσον και έξελθε ταχέως εξ Ιερουσαλήμ, διότι δεν θέλουσι παραδεχθή την περί εμού μαρτυρίαν σου.

and beheld him saying to me, Make haste, and depart quickly from Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony of me.

19 Και εγώ είπον· Κύριε, αυτοί εξεύρουσιν ότι εγώ εφυλάκιζον και έδερον εν ταις συναγωγαίς τους πιστεύοντας εις σέ·

And I said, Lord, they know that I was imprisoning and scourging from synagogue to synagogue those who believe on thee:

20 και ότε εχύνετο το αίμα Στεφάνου του μάρτυρός σου, και εγώ ήμην παρών και συνεφώνουν εις τον φόνον αυτού και εφύλαττον τα ιμάτια των φονευόντων αυτόν.

and when the blood of Stephen thy martyr was shed, I myself even stood by, and took delight in his execution, and guarded the garments of those who slew him.

21 Και είπε προς εμέ· Ύπαγε, διότι εγώ θέλω σε εξαποστείλει εις έθνη μακράν.

And he said to me, Go: for I will send thee forth to the Gentiles afar off.

22 Και μέχρι τούτου του λόγου ήκουον αυτόν· τότε δε ύψωσαν την φωνήν αυτών, λέγοντες· Σήκωσον από της γης τον τοιούτον· διότι δεν πρέπει να ζη.

And they gave him audience to this sentence, and lifted up their voice, saying, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.

23 Και επειδή αυτοί εκραύγαζον και ετίναζον τα ιμάτια και έρριπτον κονιορτόν εις τον αέρα,

So when they began raising a vast clamour, and stripping off their garments, and casting dust into the air,

24 ο χιλίαρχος προσέταξε να φερθή εις το φρούριον, παραγγείλας να εξετασθή διά μαστίγων, διά να γνωρίση διά ποίαν αιτίαν εφώναζον ούτω κατ' αυτού.

the military tribune commanded him to be brought into the fortress, ordering that he should be put to the question by scourging; that he might know for what cause they clamoured so loudly against him.

25 Και καθώς εξήπλωσεν αυτόν δεδεμένον με τα λωρία, ο Παύλος είπε προς τον παρεστώτα εκατόνταρχον· Είναι τάχα νόμιμον εις εσάς άνθρωπον Ρωμαίον και ακατάκριτον να μαστιγόνητε;

So as they were tying him up for the thongs, Paul said to the centurion standing by him, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman citizen, and uncondemned?

26 Ακούσας δε ο εκατόνταρχος, υπήγε και απήγγειλε προς τον χιλίαρχον, λέγων· Βλέπε τι μέλλεις να κάμης· διότι ο άνθρωπος ούτος είναι Ρωμαίος.

And when the centurion heard this, he came and told the military tribune, saying, Consider what you are going to do: for this man is a Roman citizen.

27 Προσελθών δε ο χιλίαρχος, είπε προς αυτόν· Λέγε μοι, συ Ρωμαίος είσαι; Ο δε είπε· Ναι.

Then the tribune came, and said to him, Tell me, art thou a Roman citizen? And he said, Yes.

28 Και απεκρίθη ο χιλίαρχος· Εγώ διά πολλών χρημάτων απέκτησα ταύτην την πολιτογράφησιν. Ο δε Παύλος είπεν· Αλλ' εγώ και εγεννήθην Ρωμαίος.

And the tribune replied, With a large sum of money I purchased this citizenship. And Paul said, But I enjoy it as my birthright.

29 Ευθύς λοιπόν απεσύρθησαν απ' αυτού οι μέλλοντες να βασανίσωσιν αυτόν. Και ο χιλίαρχος έτι εφοβήθη γνωρίσας ότι είναι Ρωμαίος, και διότι είχε δέσει αυτόν.

Immediately then they who were about to put him to the question, withdrew from him: and indeed the tribune dreaded the consequences, when he knew that he was a Roman citizen, that he had even gone so far as to bind him.

30 Τη δε επαύριον θέλων να μάθη το βέβαιον, περί τίνος κατηγορείται παρά των Ιουδαίων, έλυσεν αυτόν από των δεσμών, και προσέταξε να έλθωσιν οι αρχιερείς και όλον το συνέδριον αυτών και καταβιβάσας τον Παύλον, έστησεν έμπροσθεν αυτών.

So on the morrow, desirous to know of a certainty what it was of which he was accused by the Jews, he loosed him from the bonds, and commanded the high-priest and all the sanhedrim to appear, and bringing Paul down, set him before them.
