Προς Τιμοθεον Α΄ 3
1 Πιστός ο λόγος· Εάν τις ορέγηται επισκοπήν, καλόν έργον επιθυμεί.
It is certain, if any one is desirous of the episcopal office, he desireth a good work.
2 Πρέπει λοιπόν ο επίσκοπος να ήναι άμεμπτος, μιας γυναικός ανήρ, άγρυπνος, σώφρων, κόσμιος, φιλόξενος, διδακτικός,
A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of but one wife, sober, prudent, grave,
3 ουχί μέθυσος, ουχί πλήκτης, ουχί αισχροκερδής, αλλ' επιεικής, άμαχος, αφιλάργυρος,
hospitable, able to teach, not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of sordid gain, moderate, not quarrelsome,
4 κυβερνών καλώς τον εαυτού οίκον, έχων τα τέκνα αυτού εις υποταγήν μετά πάσης σεμνότητος·
not covetous, governing his own family well, having his children in subjection with all gravity;
5 διότι εάν τις δεν εξεύρη να κυβερνά τον εαυτού οίκον, πως θέλει επιμεληθή την εκκλησίαν του Θεού;
(for if any one know not how to govern his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
6 να μη ήναι νεοκατήχητος, διά να μη υπερηφανευθή και πέση εις την καταδίκην του διαβόλου.
not one newly converted, least being puffed up he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
7 Πρέπει δε αυτός να έχη και παρά των έξωθεν μαρτυρίαν καλήν, διά να μη πέση εις ονειδισμόν και παγίδα του διαβόλου.
He ought also to have an honorable testimony from those that are without, least he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
8 Οι διάκονοι ωσαύτως πρέπει να ήναι σεμνοί, ουχί δίγλωσσοι, ουχί δεδομένοι εις οίνον πολύν, ουχί αισχροκερδείς,
The deacons should likewise be grave, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of base gain,
9 έχοντες το μυστήριον της πίστεως μετά καθαράς συνειδήσεως.
holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
10 Και ούτοι δε ας δοκιμάζωνται πρώτον, έπειτα ας γίνωνται διάκονοι, εάν ήναι άμεμπτοι.
(And let these also first be proved, then let them take the office of deacons, if they be found blameless.)
11 Αι γυναίκες ωσαύτως σεμναί, ουχί κατάλαλοι, εγκρατείς, πισταί κατά πάντα.
And their wives likewise grave, not slanderers, sober, and faithful in all things.
12 Οι διάκονοι ας ήναι μιας γυναικός άνδρες, κυβερνώντες καλώς τα τέκνα αυτών και τους οίκους αυτών.
Let the deacons too be husbands of one wife only, governing their children and their own houses well.
13 Διότι οι καλώς διακονήσαντες αποκτώσιν εις εαυτούς βαθμόν καλόν και πολλήν παρρησίαν εις την πίστιν την εις τον Ιησούν Χριστόν.
For they, that discharge the office of a deacon well, gain to themselves a good degree of honor, and much freedom in promoting the faith that is in Christ Jesus.
14 Ταύτα σοι γράφω, ελπίζων να έλθω προς σε ταχύτερον·
These things I write unto thee, hoping to come to thee shortly.
15 αλλ' εάν βραδύνω, διά να εξεύρης πως πρέπει να πολιτεύησαι εν τω οίκω του Θεού, όστις είναι η εκκλησία του Θεού του ζώντος, ο στύλος και το εδραίωμα της αληθείας.
But if I should be retarded, that thou mayst know how thou oughtest to behave in the house of God, the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth.
16 Και αναντιρρήτως το μυστήριον της ευσεβείας είναι μέγα· ο Θεός εφανερώθη εν σαρκί, εδικαιώθη εν πνεύματι, εφάνη εις αγγέλους, εκηρύχθη εις τα έθνη, επιστεύθη εις τον κόσμον, ανελήφθη εν δόξη.
And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, and received up into glory.
