Βασιλειῶν Αʹ 14

1 Ημέραν δε τινά είπεν Ιωνάθαν, ο υιός του Σαούλ, προς τον νέον τον βαστάζοντα τα όπλα αυτού, Ελθέ, και ας περάσωμεν προς την φρουράν των Φιλισταίων, την εν τω πέραν· προς τον πατέρα αυτού όμως δεν εφανέρωσε τούτο.

Now it came to pass one day that Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man that bore his armour: Come, and let us go over to the garrison of the Philistines, which is on the other side of yonder place. But he told not this to his father.

2 Ο δε Σαούλ εκάθητο επί του άκρου του Γαβαά, υπό την ροδιάν την εν Μιγρών· και ο λαός ο μετ' αυτού ήτο έως εξακόσιοι άνδρες·

And Saul abode in the uttermost part of Gabaa under the pomegranate tree, which was in Magron: and the people with him were about six hundred men.

3 και Αχιά, ο υιός του Αχιτώβ, αδελφού του Ιχαβώδ, υιού του Φινεές, υιού του Ηλεί, ιερεύς του Κυρίου εν Σηλώ, φορών εφόδ. Και ο λαός δεν ήξευρεν ότι υπήγεν ο Ιωνάθαν.

And Achias the son of Achitob brother to Ichabod the son of Phinees, the son of Heli the priest of the Lord in Silo, wore the ephod. And the people knew not whither Jonathan was gone.

4 Μεταξύ δε των διαβάσεων, διά των οποίων ο Ιωνάθαν εζήτει να περάση προς την φρουράν των Φιλισταίων, ήτο απότομος βράχος εξ ενός μέρους και απότομος βράχος εκ του άλλου μέρους· και το όνομα του ενός Βοσές, το δε όνομα του άλλον Σενέ.

Now there were between the ascents, by which Jonathan sought to go over to the garrison of the Philistines, rocks standing up on both sides, and steep cliffs like teeth on the one side, and on the other, the name of the one was Boses, and the name of the other was Sene:

5 Το μέτωπον του ενός βράχου ήτο προς βορράν απέναντι Μιχμάς, και το του άλλου προς νότον απέναντι Γαβαά.

One rock stood out towards the north over against Machmas, and the other to the south over against Gabaa.

6 Και είπεν ο Ιωνάθαν προς τον νέον τον βαστάζοντα τα όπλα αυτού, Ελθέ, και ας περάσωμεν προς την φρουράν των απεριτμήτων τούτων· ίσως ενεργήση ο Κύριος υπέρ ημών· διότι δεν είναι εις τον Κύριον εμπόδιον να σώση διά πολλών ή δι' ολίγων.

And Jonathan said to the young man that bore his armour: Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised, it may be the Lord will do for us, because it is easy for the Lord to save either by many, or by few.

7 Και είπε προς αυτόν ο οπλοφόρος αυτού, Κάμε ό, τι είναι εν τη καρδία σου· προχώρει· ιδού, εγώ είμαι μετά σου κατά την καρδίαν σου.

And his armourbearer said to him: Do all that pleaseth thy mind: go whither thou wilt, and I will be with thee wheresoever thou hast a mind.

8 Τότε είπεν ο Ιωνάθαν, Ιδού, ημείς θέλομεν περάσει προς τους άνδρας και θέλομεν δειχθή εις αυτούς·

And Jonathan said: Behold we will go over to these men. And when we shall be seen by them,

9 εάν είπωσι προς ημάς ούτω, Στάθητε έως να έλθωμεν προς εσάς· τότε θέλομεν σταθή εν τω τόπω ημών και δεν θέλομεν αναβή προς αυτούς·

If they shall speak thus to us: Stay till we come to you: let us stand still in our place, and not go up to them.

10 αλλ' εάν είπωσιν ούτως, Ανάβητε προς ημάς· τότε θέλομεν αναβή· διότι ο Κύριος παρέδωκεν αυτούς εις την χείρα ημών· και τούτο θέλει είσθαι εις ημάς το σημείον.

But if they shall say: Come up to us: let us go up, because the Lord hath delivered them into our hands, this shall be a sign unto us.

11 Εδείχθησαν λοιπόν αμφότεροι εις την φρουράν των Φιλισταίων· και οι Φιλισταίοι είπον, Ιδού, οι Εβραίοι εξέρχονται εκ των τρυπών, όπου είχον κρυφθή.

So both of them discovered themselves to the garrison of the Philistines: and the Philistines said: Behold the Hebrews come forth out of the holes wherein they were hid.

12 Και ελάλησαν οι άνδρες της φρουράς προς τον Ιωνάθαν και προς τον βαστάζοντα τα όπλα αυτού, και είπον, Ανάβητε προς ημάς, και θέλομεν σας φανερώσει τι. Και είπεν ο Ιωνάθαν προς τον οπλοφόρον αυτού, Ανάβα κατόπιν μου· διότι παρέδωκεν αυτούς ο Κύριος εις την χείρα του Ισραήλ.

And the men of the garrison spoke to Jonathan, and to his armourbearer, and said: Come up to us, and we will shew you a thing. And Jonathan said to his armourbearer: Let us go up, follow me: for the Lord hath delivered them into the hands of Israel.

13 Και ανέρπυσεν ο Ιωνάθαν με τας χείρας αυτού και με τους πόδας αυτού, και ο βαστάζων τα όπλα αυτού κατόπιν αυτού· και έπεσον έμπροσθεν του Ιωνάθαν· και ο βαστάζων τα όπλα αυτού εθανάτονεν αυτούς κατόπιν αυτού.

And Jonathan went up creeping on his hands and feet, and his armourbearer after him. And some fell before Jonathan, others his armourbearer slew as he followed him.

14 Αύτη δε η πρώτη σφαγή, την οποίαν έκαμον ο Ιωνάθαν και ο οπλοφόρος αυτού, ήτο περίπου είκοσι άνδρες, εις διάστημα γης ημίσεως στρέμματος.

And the first slaughter which Jonathan and his armourbearer made, was of about twenty men, within half an acre of land, which a yoke of oxen is wont to plough in a day.

15 Και έγεινε τρόμος εν τω στρατοπέδω, εν τοις αγροίς και εν παντί τω λαώ· η φρουρά και οι λεηλατούντες, και αυτοί κατετρόμαξαν, και η γη συνεταράχθη· ώστε ήτο ως τρόμος Θεού.

And there was a miracle in the camp, through the fields: yea and all the people of their garrison, who had gone out to plunder, were amazed, and the earth trembled: and it happened as a miracle from God.

16 Και είδον οι φρουροί του Σαούλ εν Γαβαά του Βενιαμίν, και ιδού, το πλήθος διελύετο και βαθμηδόν διεσκορπίζετο.

And the watchmen of Saul, who were in Gabaa of Benjamin looked, and behold a multitude overthrown, and fleeing this way and that.

17 Τότε είπεν ο Σαούλ προς τον λαόν τον μετ' αυτού, Απαριθμήσατε τώρα και ιδέτε τις ανεχώρησεν εξ ημών. Και ότε απηρίθμησαν, ιδού, ο Ιωνάθαν και ο οπλοφόρος αυτού δεν ήσαν.

And Saul said to the people that were with him: Look, and see who is gone from us. And when they had sought, it was found that Jonathan and his armourbearer were not there.

18 Και είπεν ο Σαούλ προς τον Αχιά, Φέρε εδώ την κιβωτόν του Θεού. Διότι η κιβωτός του Θεού ήτο τότε μετά των υιών Ισραήλ.

And Saul said to Achias: Bring the ark of the Lord. (For the ark of God was there that day with the children of Israel.)

19 Και ενώ ελάλει ο Σαούλ προς τον ιερέα, ο θόρυβος εν τω στρατοπέδω των Φιλισταίων επροχώρει επί το μάλλον και επληθύνετο· ο δε Σαούλ είπε προς τον ιερέα, Σύρε οπίσω την χείρα σου.

And while Saul spoke to the priest, there arose a great uproar in the camp of the Philistines: and it increased by degrees, and was heard more clearly. And Saul said to the priest: Draw in thy hand.

20 Και συνηθροίσθησαν ο Σαούλ και πας ο λαός ο μετ' αυτού και ήλθον έως εις την μάχην· και ιδού, παντός ανδρός η ρομφαία ήτο εναντίον του συντρόφου αυτού, σφαγή μεγάλη σφόδρα.

Then Saul and all the people that were with him, shouted together, and they came to the place of the fight: and behold every man’s sword was turned upon his neighbour, and there was a very great slaughter.

21 οι δε Εβραίοι οι μετά των Φιλισταίων όντες ως άλλοτε, οίτινες είχον αναβή μετ' αυτών εις το στρατόπεδον εκ των πέριξ, και αυτοί έτι ηνώθησαν μετά των Ισραηλιτών, οίτινες ήσαν μετά του Σαούλ και Ιωνάθαν.

Moreover the Hebrews that had been with the Philistines yesterday and the day before, and went up with them into the camp, returned to be with the Israelites, who were with Saul and Jonathan.

22 Και πάντες οι άνδρες του Ισραήλ οι κρυπτόμενοι εν τω όρει Εφραΐμ, ακούσαντες ότι οι Φιλισταίοι έφευγον, έδραμον και αυτοί κατόπιν αυτών εις πόλεμον.

And all the Israelites that had hid themselves in mount Ephraim, hearing that the Philistines fled, joined themselves with their countrymen in the fight. And there were with Saul about ten thousand men.

23 Και έσωσεν ο Κύριος τον Ισραήλ εν τη ημέρα εκείνη· και η μάχη επέρασεν εις Βαιθ-αυέν.

And the Lord saved Israel that day. And the fight went on as far as Bethaven.

24 Οι δε άνδρες του Ισραήλ απέκαμον την ημέραν εκείνην· διότι ο Σαούλ είχεν ορκίσει τον λαόν, λέγων, Επικατάρατος ο άνθρωπος, όστις φάγη τροφήν έως εσπέρας, και εκδικηθώ από των εχθρών μου. Όθεν δεν εγεύθη τροφήν πας ο λαός.

And the men of Israel were joined together that day; and Saul adjured the people, saying: Cursed be the man that shall eat food till evening, till I be revenged of my enemies. So none of the people tasted any food:

25 Και παν το πλήθος ήλθεν εις δάσος, όπου ήτο μέλι κατά γης.

And all the common people came into a forest, in which there was honey upon the ground.

26 Και ότε εισήλθεν ο λαός εις το δάσος, ιδού, το μέλι εστάλαξεν· ουδείς όμως επλησίασε την χείρα αυτού εις το στόμα αυτού· διότι εφοβήθη ο λαός τον όρκον.

And when the people came into the forest, behold the honey dropped, but no man put his hand to his mouth. For the people feared the oath.

27 Ο Ιωνάθαν όμως δεν είχεν ακούσει, ότε ο πατήρ αυτού ώρκισε τον λαόν· όθεν ήπλωσε το άκρον της ράβδου της εν τη χειρί αυτού και εβύθισεν αυτό εις κηρήθραν και έβαλε την χείρα αυτού εις το στόμα αυτού, και ανέβλεψαν οι οφθαλμοί αυτού.

But Jonathan had not heard when his father adjured the people: and he put forth the end of the rod, which he had in his hand, and dipt it in a honeycomb: and he carried his hand to his mouth, and his eyes were enlightened.

28 Απεκρίθη δε εις εκ του λαού και είπεν, Ο πατήρ σου ώρκισε δι' όρκου τον λαόν, λέγων, Επικατάρατος ο άνθρωπος, όστις φάγη τροφήν σήμερον· διά τούτο ο λαός είναι εκλελυμένος.

And one of the people answering, said: Thy father hath bound the people with an oath, saying: Cursed be the man that shall eat any food this day. (And the people were faint.)

29 Ο δε Ιωνάθαν είπεν, Ετάραξεν ο πατήρ μου τον κόσμον· ιδέτε, παρακαλώ, πόσον ανέβλεψαν οι οφθαλμοί μου, διότι εγεύθην ολίγον εκ τούτου του μέλιτος·

And Jonathan said: My father hath troubled the land: you have seen yourselves that my eyes are enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey:

30 πόσω μάλλον, εάν ο λαός ήθελε φάγει την σήμερον ελευθέρως εκ των λαφύρων των εχθρών αυτού, τα οποία εύρηκε; διότι δεν ήθελε γείνει τώρα πολύ μεγαλητέρα σφαγή μεταξύ των Φιλισταίων;

How much more if the people had eaten of the prey of their enemies, which they found? had there not been made a greater slaughter among the Philistines?

31 Επάταξαν δε εν εκείνη τη ημέρα τους Φιλισταίους από Μιχμάς έως Αιαλών· και ο λαός ήτο εκλελυμένος σφόδρα.

So they smote that day the Philistines from Machmas to Ailon. And the people were wearied exceedingly.

32 Όθεν ερρίφθη ο λαός εις τα λάφυρα, και έλαβε πρόβατα και βόας και μόσχους και έσφαξαν κατά γής· και έτρωγεν ο λαός μετά του αίματος.

And falling upon the spoils, they took sheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew them on the ground: and the people ate them with the blood.

33 Ανήγγειλαν δε προς τον Σαούλ, λέγοντες, Ιδού, ο λαός αμαρτάνει εις τον Κύριον, διότι τρώγουσι μετά του αίματος. Και είπε, Παραβάται εστάθητε· κυλίσατε προς εμέ σήμερον λίθον μέγαν.

And they told Saul that the people had sinned against the Lord, eating with the blood. And he said: You have transgressed: roll here to me now a great stone.

34 Και είπεν ο Σαούλ, Διασπάρθητε μεταξύ του λαού και είπατε προς αυτούς, Φέρετέ μοι ενταύθα έκαστος τον βουν αυτού και έκαστος το πρόβατον αυτού, και σφάξατε ενταύθα και φάγετε· και μη αμαρτάνετε εις τον Κύριον, τρώγοντες μετά του αίματος. Και έφεραν πας ο λαός έκαστος τον βουν αυτού μεθ' εαυτού εκείνην την νύκτα και έσφαξαν εκεί.

And Saul said: Disperse yourselves among the people, and tell them to bring me every man his ox and his ram, and slay them upon this stone, and eat, and you shall not sin against the Lord in eating with the blood. So all the people brought every man his ox with him till the night: and slew them there.

35 Και ωκοδόμησεν ο Σαούλ θυσιαστήριον εις τον Κύριον· τούτο ήτο το πρώτον θυσιαστήριον, το οποίον ωκοδόμησεν ο Σαούλ εις τον Κύριον.

And Saul built an altar to the Lord and he then first began to build an altar to the Lord.

36 Και είπεν ο Σαούλ, Ας καταβώμεν εξοπίσω των Φιλισταίων διά νυκτός, και ας διαρπάσωμεν αυτούς έως να φέγξη η ημέρα, και ας μη αφήσωμεν μηδέ ένα εξ αυτών. Και είπον, Κάμε παν ό, τι σοι φαίνεται καλόν. Τότε είπεν ο ιερεύς, Ας προσέλθωμεν ενταύθα εις τον Θεόν.

And Saul said: Let us fall upon the Philistines by night, and destroy them till the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And the people said: Do all that seemeth good in thy eyes. And the priest said: Let us draw near hither unto God.

37 Και ηρώτησεν ο Σαούλ τον Θεόν, Να καταβώ εξοπίσω των Φιλισταίων; θέλεις παραδώσει αυτούς εις την χείρα του Ισραήλ; Αλλά δεν απεκρίθη προς αυτόν την ημέραν εκείνην.

And Saul consulted the Lord: Shall I pursue after the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into the hands of Israel? And he answered him not that day.

38 Και είπεν ο Σαούλ, Πλησιάσατε ενταύθα πάντες οι αρχηγοί του λαού· και μάθετε και ιδέτε, εις ποίον εστάθη η αμαρτία αύτη σήμερον·

And Saul said: Bring hither all the corners of the people: and know, and see by whom this sin hath happened today.

39 διότι ζη Κύριος, ο σώσας τον Ισραήλ, ότι και εις τον Ιωνάθαν τον υιόν μου αν εστάθη, θέλει βεβαίως θανατωθή. Και δεν ευρέθη ουδείς μεταξύ παντός του λαού, όστις απεκρίθη προς αυτόν.

As the Lord liveth who is the saviour of Israel, if it was done by Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. In this none of the people gainsaid him.

40 Και είπε προς πάντα τον Ισραήλ, Σταθήτε σεις εκ του ενός μέρους, εγώ δε και Ιωνάθαν ο υιός μου θέλομεν σταθή εκ του άλλου μέρους. Και είπεν ο λαός προς τον Σαούλ, Κάμε παν ό, τι σοι φαίνεται καλόν.

And he said to all Israel: Be you on one side, and I with Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people answered Saul: Do what seemeth good in thy eyes.

41 Τότε είπεν ο Σαούλ προς τον Κύριον τον Θεόν του Ισραήλ, Δείξον τον αθώον. Και επιάσθη ο Ιωνάθαν και ο Σαούλ· ο δε λαός απελύθη.

And Saul said to the Lord: O Lord God of Israel, give a sign, by which we may know, what the meaning is, that thou answerest not thy servant today. If this iniquity be in me, or in my son Jonathan, give a proof: or if this iniquity be in thy people, give holiness. And Jonathan and Saul were taken, and the people escaped.

42 Και είπεν ο Σαούλ, Ρίψατε κλήρους μεταξύ εμού και Ιωνάθαν του υιού μου. Και επιάσθη ο Ιωνάθαν.

And Saul said: Cast lots between me, and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken.

43 Τότε είπεν ο Σαούλ προς τον Ιωνάθαν, Φανέρωσόν μοι τι έπραξας. Και εφανέρωσε προς αυτόν ο Ιωνάθαν, και είπε, Τωόντι εγεύθην ολίγον μέλι διά του άκρου της ράβδου της εν τη χειρί μου· ιδού, εγώ, αποθνήσκω.

And Saul said to Jonathan: Tell me what thou hast done. And Jonathan told him, and said: I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod, which was in my hand, and behold I must die.

44 Και απεκρίθη ο Σαούλ, Ούτω να κάμη ο Θεός και ούτω να προσθέση· βεβαίως θέλεις αποθάνει, Ιωνάθαν.

And Saul said: May God do so and so to me, and add still more: for dying thou shalt die, O Jonathan.

45 Ο δε λαός είπε προς τον Σαούλ, Ο Ιωνάθαν θέλει αποθάνει, όστις έκαμε την μεγάλην ταύτην σωτηρίαν εις τον Ισραήλ; Μη γένοιτο· Ζη Κύριος, ουδέ μία θριξ εκ της κεφαλής αυτού θέλει πέσει εις την γήν· διότι ενήργησε μετά του Θεού την ημέραν ταύτην. Και ελύτρωσεν ο λαός τον Ιωνάθαν, και δεν απέθανε.

And the people said to Saul: Shall Jonathan then die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? This must not be. As the Lord liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground, for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people delivered Jonathan, that he should not die.

46 Τότε ανέβη ο Σαούλ εκ της καταδιώξεως των Φιλισταίων· και οι Φιλισταίοι υπήγαν εις τον τόπον αυτών.

And Saul went back, and did not pursue after the Philistines: and the Philistines went to their own places.

47 Και έλαβεν ο Σαούλ την βασιλείαν επί τον Ισραήλ, και επολέμησεν εναντίον πάντων των εχθρών αυτού κύκλω· εναντίον του Μωάβ και εναντίον των υιών του Αμμών και εναντίον του Εδώμ και εναντίον των βασιλέων της Σωβά και εναντίον των Φιλισταίων· και εναντίον πάντων όπου και αν εστρέφετο, κατετρόπονε.

And Saul having his kingdom established over Israel, fought against all his enemies round about, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and Edom, and the kings of Soba, and the Philistines; and whithersoever he turned himself, he overcame.

48 Συνεκρότησεν έτι δύναμιν και επάταξε τον Αμαλήκ, και ηλευθέρωσε τον Ισραήλ εκ χειρός των διαρπαζόντων αυτούς.

And gathering together an army, he defeated Amalec, and delivered Israel from the hand of them that spoiled them.

49 Οι δε υιοί του Σαούλ ήσαν Ιωνάθαν και Ισονεί και Μελχί-σουέ· και τα ονόματα των δύο θυγατέρων αυτού, το όνομα της πρωτοτόκου Μεράβ, και το όνομα της νεωτέρας Μιχάλ·

And the sons of Saul, were Jonathan, and Jessui, and Melchisua: and the names of his two daughters, the name of the firstborn was Merob, and the name of the younger Michol.

50 το δε όνομα της γυναικός του Σαούλ ήτο Αχινοάμ, θυγάτηρ του Αχιμάας. Και το όνομα του αρχιστρατήγου αυτού Αβενήρ, υιός του Νηρ, θείου του Σαούλ.

And the name of Saul’s wife, was Achinoam the daughter of Achimaas; and the name of the captain of his army was Abner, the son of Ner, the cousin german of Saul.

51 Ο δε Κείς ο πατήρ του Σαούλ, και ο Νηρ ο πατήρ του Αβενήρ, ήσαν υιοί του Αβιήλ.

For Cis was the father of Saul, and Ner the father of Abner, was son of Abiel.

52 Ήτο δε πόλεμος δυνατός εναντίον των Φιλισταίων κατά πάσας τας ημέρας του Σαούλ· και οπότε έβλεπεν ο Σαούλ άνδρα τινά δυνατόν ή άνδρείον, παρελάμβανεν αυτόν πλησίον εαυτού.

And there was a great war against the Philistines all the days of Saul. For whomsoever Saul saw to be a valiant man, and fit for war, he took him to himself.
