1
Better a poor man who walks with integrity than a fool whose lips are perverse.
2
Even zeal is no good without knowledge, and he who hurries his footsteps misses the mark.
3 ἀφροσύνη ἀνδρὸς λυμαίνεται τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτοῦ τὸν δὲ θεὸν αἰτιᾶται τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ
A man’s own folly subverts his way, yet his heart rages against the LORD.
4 πλοῦτος προστίθησιν φίλους πολλούς ὁ δὲ πτωχὸς καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ ὑπάρχοντος φίλου λείπεται
Wealth attracts many friends, but a poor man is deserted by his friend.
5 μάρτυς ψευδὴς οὐκ ἀτιμώρητος ἔσται ὁ δὲ ἐγκαλῶν ἀδίκως οὐ διαφεύξεται
A false witness will not go unpunished, and one who utters lies will not escape.
6 πολλοὶ θεραπεύουσιν πρόσωπα βασιλέων πᾶς δὲ ὁ κακὸς γίνεται ὄνειδος ἀνδρί
Many seek the favor of the prince, and everyone is a friend of the gift giver.
7 πᾶς ὃς ἀδελφὸν πτωχὸν μισεῖ καὶ φιλίας μακρὰν ἔσται ἔννοια ἀγαθὴ τοῖς εἰδόσιν αὐτὴν ἐγγιεῖ ἀνὴρ δὲ φρόνιμος εὑρήσει αὐτήν ὁ πολλὰ κακοποιῶν τελεσιουργεῖ κακίαν ὃς δὲ ἐρεθίζει λόγους οὐ σωθήσεται
All the brothers of a poor man hate him— how much more do his friends avoid him! He may pursue them with pleading, but they are nowhere to be found.
8 ὁ κτώμενος φρόνησιν ἀγαπᾷ ἑαυτόν ὃς δὲ φυλάσσει φρόνησιν εὑρήσει ἀγαθά
He who acquires wisdom loves himself; one who safeguards understanding will find success.
9 μάρτυς ψευδὴς οὐκ ἀτιμώρητος ἔσται ὃς δ’ ἂν ἐκκαύσῃ κακίαν ἀπολεῖται ὑπ’ αὐτῆς
A false witness will not go unpunished, and one who pours out lies will perish.
10 οὐ συμφέρει ἄφρονι τρυφή καὶ ἐὰν οἰκέτης ἄρξηται μεθ’ ὕβρεως δυναστεύειν
Luxury is unseemly for a fool— how much worse for a slave to rule over princes!
11 ἐλεήμων ἀνὴρ μακροθυμεῖ τὸ δὲ καύχημα αὐτοῦ ἐπέρχεται παρανόμοις
A man’s insight gives him patience, and his virtue is to overlook an offense.
12 βασιλέως ἀπειλὴ ὁμοία βρυγμῷ λέοντος ὥσπερ δὲ δρόσος ἐπὶ χόρτῳ οὕτως τὸ ἱλαρὸν αὐτοῦ
A king’s rage is like the roar of a lion, but his favor is like dew on the grass.
13 αἰσχύνη πατρὶ υἱὸς ἄφρων καὶ οὐχ ἁγναὶ εὐχαὶ ἀπὸ μισθώματος ἑταίρας
A foolish son is his father’s ruin, and a quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping.
14 οἶκον καὶ ὕπαρξιν μερίζουσιν πατέρες παισίν παρὰ δὲ θεοῦ ἁρμόζεται γυνὴ ἀνδρί
Houses and wealth are inherited from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the LORD.
15 δειλία κατέχει ἀνδρογύναιον ψυχὴ δὲ ἀεργοῦ πεινάσει
Laziness brings on deep sleep, and an idle soul will suffer hunger.
16 ὃς φυλάσσει ἐντολήν τηρεῖ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ψυχήν ὁ δὲ καταφρονῶν τῶν ἑαυτοῦ ὁδῶν ἀπολεῖται
He who keeps a commandment preserves his soul, but he who is careless in his ways will die.
17 δανίζει θεῷ ὁ ἐλεῶν πτωχόν κατὰ δὲ τὸ δόμα αὐτοῦ ἀνταποδώσει αὐτῷ
Kindness to the poor is a loan to the LORD, and He will repay the lender.
18 παίδευε υἱόν σου οὕτως γὰρ ἔσται εὔελπις εἰς δὲ ὕβριν μὴ ἐπαίρου τῇ ψυχῇ σου
Discipline your son, for in that there is hope; do not be party to his death.
19 κακόφρων ἀνὴρ πολλὰ ζημιωθήσεται ἐὰν δὲ λοιμεύηται καὶ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ προσθήσει
A man of great anger must pay the penalty; if you rescue him, you will have to do so again.
20 ἄκουε υἱέ παιδείαν πατρός σου ἵνα σοφὸς γένῃ ἐπ’ ἐσχάτων σου
Listen to counsel and accept discipline, that you may be wise the rest of your days.
21 πολλοὶ λογισμοὶ ἐν καρδίᾳ ἀνδρός ἡ δὲ βουλὴ τοῦ κυρίου εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα μένει
Many plans are in a man’s heart, but the purpose of the LORD will prevail.
22 καρπὸς ἀνδρὶ ἐλεημοσύνη κρείσσων δὲ πτωχὸς δίκαιος ἢ πλούσιος ψεύστης
The desire of a man is loving devotion; better to be poor than a liar.
23 φόβος κυρίου εἰς ζωὴν ἀνδρί ὁ δὲ ἄφοβος αὐλισθήσεται ἐν τόποις οὗ οὐκ ἐπισκοπεῖται γνῶσις
The fear of the LORD leads to life, that one may rest content, without visitation from harm.
24 ὁ ἐγκρύπτων εἰς τὸν κόλπον αὐτοῦ χεῖρας ἀδίκως οὐδὲ τῷ στόματι οὐ μὴ προσαγάγῃ αὐτάς
The slacker buries his hand in the dish; he will not even bring it back to his mouth.
25 λοιμοῦ μαστιγουμένου ἄφρων πανουργότερος γίνεται ἐὰν δὲ ἐλέγχῃς ἄνδρα φρόνιμον νοήσει αἴσθησιν
Strike a mocker, and the simple will beware; rebuke the discerning man, and he will gain knowledge.
26 ὁ ἀτιμάζων πατέρα καὶ ἀπωθούμενος μητέρα αὐτοῦ καταισχυνθήσεται καὶ ἐπονείδιστος ἔσται
He who assaults his father or evicts his mother is a son who brings shame and disgrace.
27 υἱὸς ἀπολειπόμενος φυλάξαι παιδείαν πατρὸς μελετήσει ῥήσεις κακάς
If you cease to hear instruction, my son, you will stray from the words of knowledge.
28 ὁ ἐγγυώμενος παῖδα ἄφρονα καθυβρίζει δικαίωμα στόμα δὲ ἀσεβῶν καταπίεται κρίσεις
A corrupt witness mocks justice, and a wicked mouth swallows iniquity.
29 ἑτοιμάζονται ἀκολάστοις μάστιγες καὶ τιμωρίαι ὤμοις ἀφρόνων
Judgments are prepared for mockers, and beatings for the backs of fools.
