Ἰησοῦς Nαυῆ 21
1 καὶ προσήλθοσαν οἱ ἀρχιπατριῶται τῶν υἱῶν Λευι πρὸς Ελεαζαρ τὸν ἱερέα καὶ πρὸς Ἰησοῦν τὸν τοῦ Ναυη καὶ πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιφύλους πατριῶν ἐκ τῶν φυλῶν Ισραηλ
While Eleazar the Supreme Priest and Joshua and the leaders of all the Israeli tribes were at Shiloh, the leaders of the clans of the tribe of Levi went to them and said, “Yahweh commanded Moses that you should give us towns where we can have pasture/fields/grassland for our animals, [but you have not done these things yet].”
2 καὶ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτοὺς ἐν Σηλω ἐν γῇ Χανααν λέγοντες ἐνετείλατο κύριος ἐν χειρὶ Μωυσῆ δοῦναι ἡμῖν πόλεις κατοικεῖν καὶ τὰ περισπόρια τοῖς κτήνεσιν ἡμῶν
3 καὶ ἔδωκαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ισραηλ τοῖς Λευίταις ἐν τῷ κατακληρονομεῖν διὰ προστάγματος κυρίου τὰς πόλεις καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῶν
So the Israeli leaders obeyed this command from Yahweh. They agreed to give towns and pasturelands to the tribe of Levi.
4 καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὁ κλῆρος τῷ δήμῳ Κααθ καὶ ἐγένετο τοῖς υἱοῖς Ααρων τοῖς ἱερεῦσιν τοῖς Λευίταις ἀπὸ φυλῆς Ιουδα καὶ ἀπὸ φυλῆς Συμεων καὶ ἀπὸ φυλῆς Βενιαμιν κληρωτὶ πόλεις δέκα τρεῖς
[First] they allotted some cities to the Kohath clans, who belonged to the tribe of Levi. To those who were descendants of the first Supreme Priest Aaron, they allotted 13 towns in the areas that had been allotted to the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin.
5 καὶ τοῖς υἱοῖς Κααθ τοῖς καταλελειμμένοις ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Εφραιμ καὶ ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Δαν καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἡμίσους φυλῆς Μανασση κληρωτὶ πόλεις δέκα
To the other members of the Kohath clan they allotted ten cities in the areas that had been allotted to the tribes of Ephraim, Dan, and the part of the tribe of Manasseh [that lives on the west side of the Jordan River].
6 καὶ τοῖς υἱοῖς Γεδσων ἀπὸ τῆς φυλῆς Ισσαχαρ καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς φυλῆς Ασηρ καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς φυλῆς Νεφθαλι καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἡμίσους φυλῆς Μανασση ἐν τῷ Βασαν πόλεις δέκα τρεῖς
The people from the Gershon clans were allotted 13 cities in the areas that had been allotted to the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and the part of the tribe of Manasseh that lives on the east side of the Jordan [River].
7 καὶ τοῖς υἱοῖς Μεραρι κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν ἀπὸ φυλῆς Ρουβην καὶ ἀπὸ φυλῆς Γαδ καὶ ἀπὸ φυλῆς Ζαβουλων κληρωτὶ πόλεις δώδεκα
The people from the Merari clans were allotted twelve cities in the areas that had been allotted to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.
8 καὶ ἔδωκαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ισραηλ τοῖς Λευίταις τὰς πόλεις καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῶν ὃν τρόπον ἐνετείλατο κύριος τῷ Μωυσῇ κληρωτί
So the Israeli leaders gave cities and pastureland to the tribe of Levi, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses that they should do.
9 καὶ ἔδωκεν ἡ φυλὴ υἱῶν Ιουδα καὶ ἡ φυλὴ υἱῶν Συμεων καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς φυλῆς υἱῶν Βενιαμιν τὰς πόλεις καὶ ἐπεκλήθησαν
These are the names of the cities and surrounding pasturelands that were allotted to them, that were in the areas where the tribes of Judah and Simeon lived.
10 τοῖς υἱοῖς Ααρων ἀπὸ τοῦ δήμου τοῦ Κααθ τῶν υἱῶν Λευι ὅτι τούτοις ἐγενήθη ὁ κλῆρος
First, they allotted cities to the members of the Kohath clans.
11 καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς τὴν Καριαθαρβοκ μητρόπολιν τῶν Ενακ αὕτη ἐστὶν Χεβρων ἐν τῷ ὄρει Ιουδα τὰ δὲ περισπόρια κύκλῳ αὐτῆς
They allotted to them Kiriath-Arba (which is [now named] Hebron), in the hilly area of Judah. Arba received its name because Arba was the ancestor of [the giants of] the Anak people-group.
12 καὶ τοὺς ἀγροὺς τῆς πόλεως καὶ τὰς κώμας αὐτῆς ἔδωκεν Ἰησοῦς τοῖς υἱοῖς Χαλεβ υἱοῦ Ιεφοννη ἐν κατασχέσει
But the fields and villages surrounding Arba had already been allotted to Caleb.
13 καὶ τοῖς υἱοῖς Ααρων τὴν πόλιν φυγαδευτήριον τῷ φονεύσαντι τὴν Χεβρων καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα τὰ σὺν αὐτῇ καὶ τὴν Λεμνα καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα τὰ πρὸς αὐτῇ
They allotted to them Hebron, which was one of the cities to which people could run/escape to be safe/protected. They also allotted to the Kohath clan the cities of Libnah,
14 καὶ τὴν Αιλωμ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ τὴν Τεμα καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ
Jattir, Eshtemoa,
15 καὶ τὴν Γελλα καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ τὴν Δαβιρ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ
Holon, Debir,
16 καὶ Ασα καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ Τανυ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ Βαιθσαμυς καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ πόλεις ἐννέα παρὰ τῶν δύο φυλῶν τούτων
Ain, Juttah, and Beth-Shemesh. Altogether they were allotted those nine cities which were located in the areas that had been allotted to the tribes of Judah and Simeon.
17 καὶ παρὰ τῆς φυλῆς Βενιαμιν τὴν Γαβαων καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ Γαθεθ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ
The Kohath clan was also allotted these four cities: Gibeon, Geba,
18 καὶ Αναθωθ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ Γαμαλα καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ πόλεις τέσσαρες
Anathoth, and Almon. Those cities were in the area that had been allotted to the tribe of Benjamin.
19 πᾶσαι αἱ πόλεις υἱῶν Ααρων τῶν ἱερέων δέκα τρεῖς
Altogether those 13 towns and surrounding pastureland were allotted to the priests who were descended from Aaron.
20 καὶ τοῖς δήμοις υἱοῖς Κααθ τοῖς Λευίταις τοῖς καταλελειμμένοις ἀπὸ τῶν υἱῶν Κααθ καὶ ἐγενήθη πόλις τῶν ὁρίων αὐτῶν ἀπὸ φυλῆς Εφραιμ
The other members the Kohath clan were allotted four cities and the surrounding pastureland in the area that had been allotted to the tribe of Ephraim.
21 καὶ ἔδωκαν αὐτοῖς τὴν πόλιν τοῦ φυγαδευτηρίου τὴν τοῦ φονεύσαντος τὴν Συχεμ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ Γαζαρα καὶ τὰ πρὸς αὐτὴν καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ
Those cities were Shechem (which was one of the cities to which people could run/escape to be safe/protected), Gezer,
22 καὶ τὴν Καβσαϊμ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα τὰ πρὸς αὐτῇ καὶ τὴν ἄνω Βαιθωρων καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ πόλεις τέσσαρες
Kibzaim, and Beth-Horon.
23 καὶ ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Δαν τὴν Ελκωθαιμ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ τὴν Γεθεδαν καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ
They were also allotted four cities and surrounding pastureland in the area that had been allotted to the tribe of Dan. Those cities were Eltekeh, Gibbethon,
24 καὶ Αιλων καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ Γεθερεμμων καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ πόλεις τέσσαρες
Aijalon, and Gath-Rimmon.
25 καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἡμίσους φυλῆς Μανασση τὴν Ταναχ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ τὴν Ιεβαθα καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ πόλεις δύο
They were also allotted two towns and surrounding pastureland that had been allotted to [the] part of the tribe of Manasseh [that lived on the west side of the Jordan River]. Those cities were Taanach and Gath-Rimmon.
26 πᾶσαι πόλεις δέκα καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα τὰ πρὸς αὐταῖς τοῖς δήμοις υἱῶν Κααθ τοῖς ὑπολελειμμένοις
Those were the ten cities and surrounding pastureland that were allotted to the other members of the Kohath clan.
27 καὶ τοῖς υἱοῖς Γεδσων τοῖς Λευίταις ἐκ τοῦ ἡμίσους φυλῆς Μανασση τὰς πόλεις τὰς ἀφωρισμένας τοῖς φονεύσασι τὴν Γαυλων ἐν τῇ Βασανίτιδι καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ τὴν Βοσοραν καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ πόλεις δύο
They also allotted towns and the surrounding pastureland to the Gershon clans. Those clans were also descended from Levi. They were allotted two cities from the area that had been allotted to the tribe of Manasseh [that is on the east side of the Jordan River]. Those cities were Golan in the Bashan region, which was one of the cities to which people could run/escape to be safe/protected, and Be-Eshtarah.
28 καὶ ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Ισσαχαρ τὴν Κισων καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ Δεββα καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ
From the area that had been allotted to the tribe of Issachar they were allotted four cities. Those cities were Kishion, Daberath,
29 καὶ τὴν Ρεμμαθ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ Πηγὴν γραμμάτων καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ πόλεις τέσσαρες
Jarmuth, and En-Gannim.
30 καὶ ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Ασηρ τὴν Βασελλαν καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ Δαββων καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ
From the area that had been allotted to the tribe of Asher they were allotted four cities. Those cities were Mishal, Abdon,
31 καὶ Χελκατ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ Ρααβ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ πόλεις τέσσαρες
Helkath, and Rehob.
32 καὶ ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Νεφθαλι τὴν πόλιν τὴν ἀφωρισμένην τῷ φονεύσαντι τὴν Καδες ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ τὴν Εμμαθ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ Θεμμων καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ πόλεις τρεῖς
From the area that had been allotted to the tribe of Naphtali they were allotted three cities. Those cities were Kedesh in the Galilee region (it was one of the cities to which people could run/escape to be safe/protected), Hammoth-Dor, and Kartan.
33 πᾶσαι αἱ πόλεις τοῦ Γεδσων κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν πόλεις δέκα τρεῖς
So altogether the Gershon clans were allotted 13 cities and the surrounding pasturelands.
34 καὶ τῷ δήμῳ υἱῶν Μεραρι τοῖς Λευίταις τοῖς λοιποῖς ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς υἱῶν Ζαβουλων τὴν Μααν καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῆς καὶ τὴν Καδης καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῆς
The other descendants of Levi, the ones who belonged to the Merari clans, were also allotted towns and their surrounding pasturelands. From the area that had been allotted to the tribe of Zebulun they were allotted four cities. They were Jokneam, Kartah,
35 καὶ Δεμνα καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῆς καὶ Σελλα καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῆς πόλεις τέσσαρες
Dimnah, and Nahalal.
36 καὶ πέραν τοῦ Ιορδάνου τοῦ κατὰ Ιεριχω ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Ρουβην τὴν πόλιν τὸ φυγαδευτήριον τοῦ φονεύσαντος τὴν Βοσορ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ τῇ Μισωρ καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῆς καὶ τὴν Ιαζηρ καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῆς
From the area that had been allotted to the tribe of Reuben they were allotted four cities. They were Bezer, Jahaz,
37 καὶ τὴν Δεκμων καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῆς καὶ τὴν Μαφα καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῆς πόλεις τέσσαρες
Kedemoth, and Mephaath.
38 καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς φυλῆς Γαδ τὴν πόλιν τὸ φυγαδευτήριον τοῦ φονεύσαντος τὴν Ραμωθ ἐν τῇ Γαλααδ καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῆς καὶ τὴν Καμιν καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῆς
From the area that had been allotted to the tribe of Gad they were allotted four cities. They were Ramoth, which was one of the cities in the Gilead region to which people could run/escape to be safe/protected, Mahanaim,
39 καὶ τὴν Εσεβων καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῆς καὶ τὴν Ιαζηρ καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῆς αἱ πᾶσαι πόλεις τέσσαρες
Heshbon, and Jazer.
40 πᾶσαι πόλεις τοῖς υἱοῖς Μεραρι κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν τῶν καταλελειμμένων ἀπὸ τῆς φυλῆς Λευι καὶ ἐγενήθη τὰ ὅρια πόλεις δέκα δύο
Altogether twelve cities were allotted to the Merari clans.
41 πᾶσαι αἱ πόλεις τῶν Λευιτῶν ἐν μέσῳ κατασχέσεως υἱῶν Ισραηλ τεσσαράκοντα ὀκτὼ πόλεις καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῶν
So altogether 48 cities were allotted to the tribe of Levi,
42 κύκλῳ τῶν πόλεων τούτων πόλις καὶ τὰ περισπόρια κύκλῳ τῆς πόλεως πάσαις ταῖς πόλεσιν ταύταις
and each city had surrounding pastureland.
43 καὶ ἔδωκεν κύριος τῷ Ισραηλ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ἣν ὤμοσεν δοῦναι τοῖς πατράσιν αὐτῶν καὶ κατεκληρονόμησαν αὐτὴν καὶ κατῴκησαν ἐν αὐτῇ
In that way Yahweh allotted to the Israeli people all the land that he had promised to give to their/our ancestors. The Israeli people took control of [most of] those areas and started to live there.
44 καὶ κατέπαυσεν αὐτοὺς κύριος κυκλόθεν καθότι ὤμοσεν τοῖς πατράσιν αὐτῶν οὐκ ἀνέστη οὐθεὶς κατενώπιον αὐτῶν ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν ἐχθρῶν αὐτῶν πάντας τοὺς ἐχθροὺς αὐτῶν παρέδωκεν κύριος εἰς τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῶν
Just like he had promised our ancestors, Yahweh allowed them/us to have peace with the enemies that surrounded them/us. Yahweh enabled the Israelis/us to defeat their/our enemies.
45 οὐ διέπεσεν ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν ῥημάτων τῶν καλῶν ὧν ἐλάλησεν κύριος τοῖς υἱοῖς Ισραηλ πάντα παρεγένετο
Yahweh did all the things that he had promised to the Israeli people/us. Everything that he said would happen did happen.
