< Johana 8 >
1 No rĩrĩ, Jesũ agĩthiĩ Kĩrĩma-inĩ kĩa Mĩtamaiyũ.
but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
2 Na rũciinĩ tene akĩroka o rĩngĩ kũu nja cia hekarũ, kũrĩa andũ othe maamũrigiicĩirie. Nake agĩikara thĩ kũmaruta.
At break of day however He returned to the Temple, and there the people came to Him in crowds. He seated Himself;
3 Arutani a watho hamwe na Afarisai makĩrehe mũtumia wanyiitĩtwo agĩtharia. Makĩmũrũgamia hau mbere ya gĩkundi,
and was teaching them when the Scribes and the Pharisees brought to Him a woman who had been found committing adultery. They made her stand in the centre of the court, and they put the case to Him.
4 na makĩĩra Jesũ atĩrĩ, “Mũrutani, mũtumia ũyũ aanyiitwo agĩtharia.
"Rabbi," they said, "this woman has been found in the very act of committing adultery.
5 Thĩinĩ wa watho-rĩ, Musa aatwathire tũhũũrage atumia ta aya na mahiga nyuguto. Rĩu we ũkuuga atĩa?”
Now, in the Law, Moses has ordered us to stone such women to death. But what do you say?"
They asked this in order to put Him to the test, so that they might have some charge to bring against Him. But Jesus leant forward and began to write with His finger on the ground.
When however they persisted with their question, He raised His head and said to them, "Let the sinless man among you be the first to throw a stone at her."
8 Agĩcooka akĩinamĩrĩra rĩngĩ, akĩandĩka thĩ na kĩara.
Then He leant forward again, and again began to write on the ground.
9 Rĩrĩa maiguire ũguo, makĩambĩrĩria kwehera hau ũmwe kwa ũmwe, maambĩrĩirie na arĩa akũrũ, nginya hagĩtigara o Jesũ na mũtumia ũcio arũngiĩ o hau.
They listened to Him, and then, beginning with the eldest, took their departure, one by one, till all were gone. And Jesus was left behind alone--and the woman in the centre of the court.
10 Jesũ akĩinamũka, akĩmũũria atĩrĩ, “Mũtumia ũyũ, agũthitangi marĩ ha? Hatirĩ o na ũmwe wao wagũtuĩra?”
Then, raising His head, Jesus said to her, "Where are they? Has no one condemned you?"
11 Nake akĩmũcookeria atĩrĩ, “Mũthuuri ũyũ, gũtirĩ o na ũmwe.” Nake Jesũ akiuga atĩrĩ, “O na niĩ ndigũgũtuĩra. Thiĩ, na ndũkanacooke kwĩhia.”)
"No one, Sir," she replied. "And I do not condemn you either," said Jesus; "go, and from this time do not sin any more."]
Once more Jesus addressed them. "I am the Light of the world," He said; "the man who follows me shall certainly not walk in the dark, but shall have the light of Life."
13 Nao Afarisai makĩmũkararia, makĩmwĩra atĩrĩ, “We ũraheana ũira waku wee mwene; ũira waku ti wa ma.”
"You are giving testimony about yourself," said the Pharisees; "your testimony is not true."
No inyuĩ mũtiũĩ kũrĩa nyumĩte kana kũrĩa ndĩrathiĩ.
"Even if I am giving testimony about myself," replied Jesus, "my testimony is true; for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you know neither of these two things.
15 Inyuĩ mũtuanagĩra ciira na ũmũndũ; niĩ ndirĩ mũndũ nduagĩra ciira.
You judge according to appearances: I am judging no one.
16 No o na ingĩtuanĩra ciira-rĩ, itua rĩakwa nĩrĩagĩrĩire, nĩgũkorwo ndituanagĩra ndĩ nyiki. No niĩ ndĩ na Baba, ũrĩa wandũmire.
And even if I do judge, my judgement is just; for I am not alone, but the Father who sent me is with me.
17 Thĩinĩ wa watho wanyu nĩ kwandĩkĩtwo atĩ ũira wa andũ eerĩ nĩ wa ma.
In your own Law, too, it is written that the testimony of two men is true.
18 Niĩ ndĩraruta ũira wakwa mwene; nake mũira wakwa ũcio ũngĩ nĩ Baba ũrĩa wandũmire.”
I am one giving testimony about myself, and the Father who sent me gives testimony about me."
19 Ningĩ makĩmũũria atĩrĩ, “Thoguo arĩ kũ?” Nake Jesũ akĩmacookeria atĩrĩ, “Inyuĩ mũtinjũũĩ, o na Baba mũtimũũĩ. Korwo nĩmũnjũũĩ, o na Baba nĩmũngĩmũũĩ.”
"Where is your Father?" they asked. "You know my Father as little as you know me." He replied; "if you knew me, you would know my Father also."
20 Nake aaragia ciugo icio akĩrutana hekarũ-inĩ hakuhĩ na harĩa mũhothi warutagĩrwo. No gũtirĩ mũndũ wamũnyiitire nĩ tondũ ihinda rĩake rĩtiarĩ ikinyu.
These sayings He uttered in the Treasury, while teaching in the Temple; yet no one arrested Him, because His time had not yet come.
21 O rĩngĩ Jesũ akĩmeera atĩrĩ, “Nĩngwĩthiĩra, na inyuĩ nĩmũkanjaria no mũgaakua mũrĩ o mehia-inĩ manyu. Kũrĩa ngũthiĩ inyuĩ mũtingĩhota gũũka.”
Again He said to them, "I am going away. Then you will try to find me, but you will die in your sins. Where I am going, it is impossible for you to come."
22 Ũhoro ũcio ũgĩtũma Ayahudi morie atĩrĩ, “Kaĩ ekwĩyũraga? Hihi nĩkĩo aroiga atĩ, ‘Kũrĩa ngũthiĩ mũtingĩhota gũũka’?”
The Jews began to ask one another, "Is he going to kill himself, do you think, that he says, 'Where I am going, it is impossible for you to come'?"
23 Nowe akĩmeera atĩrĩ, “Inyuĩ mũrĩ a gũkũ thĩ, niĩ nyumĩte Igũrũ.
"You," He continued, "are from below, I am from above: you are of this present world, I am not of this present world.
24 Inyuĩ mũrĩ a thĩ-ĩno; no niĩ ndirĩ wa thĩ-ĩno. Ndamwĩrire atĩ mũgaakua mũrĩ o mehia-inĩ manyu; mũngĩrega gwĩtĩkia ũrĩa njugaga atĩ niĩ nĩ niĩ we, ti-itherũ mũgaakua mũrĩ o mehia-inĩ manyu.”
That is why I told you that you will die in your sins; for, unless you believe that I am He, that is what will happen."
25 Nao makĩmũũria atĩrĩ, “Wee nĩwe ũ.” Nake Jesũ akĩmeera atĩrĩ, “Niĩ nĩ niĩ o ũrĩa ndũũrĩte ndĩmwĩraga kuuma o kĩambĩrĩria.
"You--who are you?" they asked. "How is it that I am speaking to you at all?" replied Jesus.
26 Ndĩ na maũndũ maingĩ ingiuga ma kũmũciirithia namo. No ũrĩa wandũmire nĩ mwĩhokeku, naguo ũrĩa njiguĩte kuuma kũrĩ we nĩguo njĩĩraga kĩrĩndĩ.”
"Many things I have to speak and to judge concerning you. But He who sent me is true, and the things which I have heard from Him are those which I have come into the world to speak."
27 Nao matiigana kũmenya atĩ aameeraga ũhoro wa Ithe.
They did not perceive that He was speaking to them of the Father.
28 Nĩ ũndũ ũcio Jesũ akĩmeera atĩrĩ, “Mwarĩkia kwambararia Mũrũ wa Mũndũ-rĩ, nĩguo mũkamenya ũrĩa njugaga atĩ niĩ nĩ niĩ we, na atĩ gũtirĩ ũndũ njĩkaga ndĩĩrĩte, no njaragia o ũrĩa Baba andutĩte.
So Jesus added, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He. Of myself I do nothing; but as the Father has taught me, so I speak.
29 Nake ũrĩa wandũmire arĩ hamwe na niĩ; ndandigĩte ndĩ nyiki, nĩgũkorwo hĩndĩ ciothe njĩkaga maũndũ o marĩa mamũkenagia.”
And He who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone: for I do always what is pleasing to Him."
30 O akĩaragia-rĩ, andũ aingĩ makĩmwĩtĩkia.
As He thus spoke, many became believers in Him.
31 Nake Jesũ akĩĩra Ayahudi arĩa maamwĩtĩkĩtie atĩrĩ, “Mũngĩrũmia ũrutani wakwa-rĩ, mũrĩ arutwo akwa kũna.
Jesus therefore said to those of the Jews who had now believed in Him, "As for you, if you hold fast to my teaching, then you are truly my disciples;
32 Nĩ mũkaamenya ũhoro wa ma, naguo ũhoro ũcio wa ma nĩ ũkaamũkũũra.”
and you shall know the Truth, and the Truth will make you free."
33 Nao makĩmũcookeria makĩmwĩra atĩrĩ, “Ithuĩ tũrĩ a rũciaro rwa Iburahĩmu, na tũtirĩ twatuĩka ngombo cia mũndũ o na ũ. Ũngĩkiuga atĩa atĩ nĩtũgakũũrwo?”
"We are descendants of Abraham," they answered, "and have never at any time been in slavery to any one. What do those words of yours mean, 'You shall become free'?"
34 Nake Jesũ akĩmacookeria atĩrĩ, “Ngũmwĩra atĩrĩ o ma, mũndũ o wothe wĩhagia nĩ ngombo ya mehia.
"In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that every one who commits sin is the slave of sin.
35 No rĩrĩ, ngombo ti ya gũtũũra mũciĩ nginya tene no mũriũ wa mwene mũciĩ nĩ wa gũtũũra mũciĩ nginya tene. (aiōn )
Now a slave does not remain permanently in his master's house, but a son does. (aiōn )
36 Nĩ ũndũ ũcio Mũrũ wa Ngai angĩkamũkũũra-rĩ, nĩmũgakũũrwo kũna.
If then the Son shall make you free, you will be free indeed.
37 Nĩnjũũĩ mũrĩ a rũciaro rwa Iburahĩmu, no nĩmwĩharĩirie kũnjũraga, tondũ ũhoro wakwa ndũrĩ na ũikaro thĩinĩ wanyu.
You are descendants of Abraham, I know; but you want to kill me, because my teaching gains no ground within you.
38 Niĩ ndĩramwĩra maũndũ marĩa nyonete harĩ Baba, na inyuĩ mwĩkaga maũndũ marĩa mũiguĩte kuuma kũrĩ ithe wanyu.”
The words I speak are those I have learnt in the presence of the Father. Therefore you also should do what you have heard from your father."
39 Nao makĩmũcookeria atĩrĩ, “Iburahĩmu nĩwe ithe witũ.” Nake Jesũ akĩmeera atĩrĩ, “Mũngĩrĩ ciana cia Iburahĩmu-rĩ, nĩ mũngĩĩkaga maũndũ marĩa Iburahĩmu eekaga.
"Our father is Abraham," they said. "If you were Abraham's children," replied Jesus, "it is Abraham's deeds that you would be doing.
40 Ũrĩa kũrĩ nĩ atĩ, inyuĩ nĩmũtuĩte itua rĩa kũnjũraga, o niĩ mũndũ ũrĩa ũmũheete ũhoro ũrĩa wa ma, o ũrĩa ndaiguire kuuma kũrĩ Ngai. Ũguo tiguo Iburahĩmu eekaga.
But, in fact, you are longing to kill me, a man who has spoken to you the truth which I have heard from God. Abraham did not do that.
41 Inyuĩ mũreka maũndũ marĩa ithe wanyu ekaga.” Nao makĩmũkararia makĩmwĩra atĩrĩ, “Ithuĩ tũtirĩ ciana ciumanĩte na ũtharia. Ithuĩ tũrĩ na Baba ũmwe tu, na nĩwe Ngai.”
You are doing the deeds of your father." "We," they replied, "are not illegitimate children. We have one Father, namely God."
42 Jesũ akĩmeera atĩrĩ, “Ngai angĩrĩ Ithe wanyu-rĩ, no mũnyende, nĩgũkorwo ndoimire kũrĩ Ngai, na rĩu ndĩ gũkũ. Ti niĩ mwene ndĩĩtũmĩte, no nĩwe wandũmire.
"If God were your Father," said Jesus, "you would love me; for it is from God that I came and I am now here. I have not come of myself, but He sent me.
43 Mũraga gũtaũkĩrwo nĩ ũrĩa ndĩroiga nĩkĩ? Tondũ mũtirahota kũmenya ũhoro ũrĩa ndĩraria.
How is it you do not understand me when I speak? It is because you cannot bear to listen to my words.
44 Inyuĩ mũrĩ ciana cia ithe wanyu, Mũcukani, na mwendaga kũhingia merirĩria ma ithe wanyu. We aarĩ mũũragani kuuma o kĩambĩrĩria. Ndathingataga ũhoro wa ma, nĩgũkorwo gũtirĩ ũhoro wa ma thĩinĩ wake. Rĩrĩa ekũheenania, aaragia rũthiomi rwake, tondũ we nĩ mũheenania, na nĩwe ithe wa maheeni.
The father whose sons you are is the Devil; and you desire to do what gives him pleasure. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand firm in the truth--for there is no truth in him. Whenever he utters his lie, he utters it out of his own store; for he is a liar, and the father of lies.
45 No tondũ njaragia ũhoro wa ma-rĩ, mũtinjĩtĩkagia.
But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me.
46 Nĩ kũrĩ mũndũ ũmwe wanyu ũngĩonania atĩ ndĩ mwĩhia? Angĩkorwo ndĩraria ũhoro wa ma-rĩ, mũregaga kũnjĩtĩkia nĩkĩ?
Which of you convicts me of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me?
47 Ũrĩa ũrĩ wa Ngai nĩaiguaga ũrĩa Ngai oigaga. Kĩrĩa kĩgiragia mũmũigue nĩ tondũ mũtirĩ a Ngai.”
He who is a child of God listens to God's words. You do not listen to them: and why? It is because you are not God's children."
48 Nao Ayahudi makĩmũcookeria atĩrĩ, “Githĩ tũtirĩ na kĩhooto gĩa kuuga atĩ wee ũrĩ Mũsamaria na ũrĩ na ndaimono?”
"Are we not right," answered the Jews, "in saying that you are a Samaritan and are possessed by a demon?"
49 Nake Jesũ akĩmeera atĩrĩ, “Niĩ ndirĩ na ndaimono, no nĩndĩĩte Baba, no inyuĩ mũtindĩĩte.
"I am not possessed by a demon," replied Jesus. "On the contrary I honour my Father, and you dishonour me.
50 Ndirecarĩria ũgooci wakwa niĩ mwene, no nĩ harĩ na ũmwe ũrĩa ũũcaragia, na nĩwe mũtuanĩri ciira.
I, however, am not aiming at glory for myself: there is One who aims at glory for me--and who judges.
51 Ngũmwĩra atĩrĩ na ma, mũndũ o wothe angĩrũmia kiugo gĩakwa, ndarĩ hĩndĩ akona gĩkuũ.” (aiōn )
In most solemn truth I tell you that if any one shall have obeyed my teaching he shall in no case ever see death." (aiōn )
52 Ayahudi maigua ũguo, makĩgũthũka makĩmwĩra atĩrĩ, “Rĩu nĩtwamenya atĩ ũrĩ na ndaimono. Iburahĩmu nĩakuire o na anabii magĩkua, no wee ũroiga atĩ mũndũ o wothe angĩrũmia kiugo gĩaku, ndagacama gĩkuũ. (aiōn )
"Now," exclaimed the Jews, "we know that you are possessed by a demon. Abraham died, and so did the Prophets, and yet you say, 'If any one shall have obeyed my teaching, he shall in no case ever taste death.' (aiōn )
53 Wee ũkĩrĩ mũnene gũkĩra ithe witũ Iburahĩmu? We nĩakuire o na anabii magĩkua. Kaĩ ũreciiria we ũrĩ ũ?”
Are you really greater than our forefather Abraham? For he died. And the prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?"
54 Nake Jesũ akĩmacookeria atĩrĩ, “Ingĩĩgooca-rĩ, kwĩgooca gwakwa nĩ gwa tũhũ. Baba, ũrĩa muugaga atĩ nĩwe Ngai wanyu nĩwe ũngoocithagia.
"Were I to glorify myself," answered Jesus, "I should have no real glory. There is One who glorifies me--namely my Father, who you say is your God.
55 O na gũtuĩka mũtimũũĩ, niĩ nĩndĩmũũĩ. Ingiuga atĩ ndimũũĩ, ingĩtuĩka wa maheeni ta inyuĩ, no nĩndĩmũũĩ na nĩnũmĩtie kiugo gĩake.
You do not know Him, but I know Him perfectly; and were I to deny my knowledge of Him, I should resemble you, and be a liar. On the contrary I do know Him, and I obey His commands.
56 Ithe wanyu Iburahĩmu nĩakenaga atĩ nĩakona mũthenya wakwa; na nĩawonire na agĩcanjamũka.”
Abraham your forefather exulted in the hope of seeing my day: and he saw it, and was glad."
57 Nao Ayahudi makĩmwĩra atĩrĩ, “Wee o na ndũkinyĩtie mĩaka mĩrongo ĩtano, na ũkoiga atĩ nĩwonete Iburahĩmu!”
"You are not yet fifty years old," cried the Jews, "and have you seen Abraham?"
58 Nake Jesũ akĩmacookeria atĩrĩ, “Ngũmwĩra atĩrĩ na ma, Iburahĩmu atanaciarwo, Niĩ ndũire!”
"In most solemn truth," answered Jesus, "I tell you that before Abraham came into existence, I am."
59 Maigua ũguo makĩoya mahiga mamũhũũre namo nyuguto, no Jesũ akĩĩhitha, akiuma kũu hekarũ-inĩ.
Thereupon they took up stones with which to stone Him, but He hid Himself and went away out of the Temple.
