< 1 Athamaki 18 >

1 Thuutha wa ihinda iraaya, mwaka-inĩ wa gatatũ, kiugo kĩa Jehova gĩgĩkinyĩra Elija, akĩĩrwo atĩrĩ, “Ũkĩra ũthiĩ ũkeyonanie harĩ Ahabu, na thuutha wa ũguo nĩnguuria mbura bũrũri-inĩ ũyũ.”
After many days, the LORD’s word came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go, show yourself to Ahab; and I will send rain on the earth.”
Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. The famine was severe in Samaria.
Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly;
4 Rĩrĩa Jezebeli ooragithagia anabii a Jehova, Obadia nĩoete anabii igana rĩmwe akamahitha ngurunga-inĩ igĩrĩ, o ĩmwe andũ mĩrongo ĩtano, na akamaheaga irio na maaĩ.)
for when Jezebel cut off the LORD’s prophets, Obadiah took one hundred prophets, and hid them fifty to a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)
5 Ahabu akĩĩra Obadia atĩrĩ, “Thiũrũrũka bũrũri wothe ũthiĩ ithima-inĩ ciothe, na ituamba-inĩ. No gũkorwo tuona handũ harĩ nyeki ĩngĩtũũria mbarathi na nyũmbũ muoyo, nĩguo tũtikoorage nyamũ o na ĩmwe iitũ.”
Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go through the land, to all the springs of water, and to all the brooks. Perhaps we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, that we not lose all the animals.”
6 Nĩ ũndũ ũcio makĩgayana bũrũri ũcio o eerĩ o mũndũ kũrĩa egũtuĩkanĩria, Ahabu agĩthiĩ mwena ũmwe na Obadia agĩthiĩ mwena ũrĩa ũngĩ.
So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it. Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.
7 Rĩrĩa Obadia aathiiaga-rĩ, agĩtũngana na Elija. Obadia akĩmũmenya, akĩinamĩrĩra, agĩturumithia ũthiũ thĩ, akĩmũũria atĩrĩ, “Ti-itherũ nĩwe, mwathi wakwa Elija?”
As Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah met him. He recognised him, and fell on his face, and said, “Is it you, my lord Elijah?”
8 Nake agĩcookia atĩrĩ, “Ĩĩ nĩ niĩ, thiĩ ũkeere Ahabu mwathi waku atĩrĩ, ‘Elija arĩ gũkũ.’”
He answered him, “It is I. Go, tell your lord, ‘Behold, Elijah is here!’”
9 Obadia akĩmũũria atĩrĩ, “Kaĩ njĩkĩte ũũru ũrĩkũ, nĩguo ũũneane niĩ ndungata yaku moko-inĩ ma Ahabu njũragwo?
He said, “How have I sinned, that you would deliver your servant into the hand of Ahab, to kill me?
As the LORD your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent to seek you. When they said, ‘He is not here,’ he took an oath of the kingdom and nation that they didn’t find you.
11 Na rĩu ũranjĩĩra thiĩ kũrĩ mwathi wakwa ngamwĩre atĩrĩ, ‘Elija arĩ gũkũ.’
Now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here.”’
12 Niĩ ndiũĩ kũrĩa Roho wa Jehova angĩgũtwara twatigana nawe. Ingĩthiĩ njĩĩre Ahabu ũguo na acooke akwage-rĩ, nĩekũnjũraga. No niĩ ndungata yaku ndũire hooyaga Jehova kuuma ndĩ o mũnini.
It will happen, as soon as I leave you, that the LORD’s Spirit will carry you I don’t know where; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he can’t find you, he will kill me. But I, your servant, have feared the LORD from my youth.
13 Wee mwathi wakwa-rĩ, kaĩ ũtarĩ waigua ũrĩa ndeekire rĩrĩa Jezebeli ooragaga anabii a Jehova, ũrĩa ndaahithire anabii a Jehova igana rĩmwe ngurunga-inĩ igĩrĩ, o ĩmwe anabii mĩrongo ĩtano, na ngamaheaga irio na maaĩ?
Wasn’t it told my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the LORD’s prophets, how I hid one hundred men of the LORD’s prophets with fifty to a cave, and fed them with bread and water?
14 Na rĩu ũranjĩĩra thiĩ kũrĩ mwathi wakwa ngamwĩre atĩrĩ, ‘Elija arĩ gũkũ.’ Nĩekũnjũraga!”
Now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here”.’ He will kill me.”
15 Elija akĩmwĩra atĩrĩ, “O ta ũrĩa Jehova Mwene-Hinya-Wothe ũrĩa ndungatagĩra atũũraga muoyo-rĩ, ti-itherũ nĩngwĩonithania niĩ mwene kũrĩ Ahabu ũmũthĩ.”
Elijah said, “As the LORD of Armies lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today.”
16 Nĩ ũndũ ũcio Obadia agĩthiĩ gũtũnga Ahabu akĩmwĩra ũhoro ũcio, nake Ahabu agĩthiĩ gũtũnga Elija.
So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.
17 Rĩrĩa Ahabu onire Elija, akĩmwĩra atĩrĩ, “Wee nĩwe, wee mũnyariiri wa Isiraeli?”
When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, “Is that you, you troubler of Israel?”
18 Elija akĩmũcookeria atĩrĩ, “Niĩ ndinyariirĩte Isiraeli. No wee na nyũmba ya thoguo, nĩ inyuĩ mwĩkĩte ũguo. Nĩmwatiganĩirie maathani ma Jehova na mũkĩrũmĩrĩra Baali.
He answered, “I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father’s house, in that you have forsaken the LORD’s commandments and you have followed the Baals.
19 Rĩu tũmana andũ moime Isiraeli guothe, moke tũcemanie nao Kĩrĩma-inĩ gĩa Karimeli. Na ũrehe anabii arĩa a Baali magana mana ma mĩrongo ĩtano na anabii a Ashera magana mana, arĩa marĩĩagĩra metha-inĩ ya Jezebeli.”
Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel to Mount Carmel, and four hundred and fifty of the prophets of Baal, and four hundred of the prophets of the Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”
20 Nĩ ũndũ ũcio Ahabu agĩtũmana Isiraeli guothe na agĩcookanĩrĩria anabii Kĩrĩma-inĩ gĩa Karimeli.
So Ahab sent to all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together to Mount Carmel.
21 Elija agĩthiĩ mbere ya andũ akĩmeera atĩrĩ, “Nĩ nginya rĩ mũgũtũũra mũthanganagĩria njĩra igĩrĩ? Angĩkorwo Jehova nĩwe Ngai-rĩ, mũrũmĩrĩrei, no angĩkorwo Baali nĩwe Ngai-rĩ, mũkĩmũrũmĩrĩre we.” No andũ acio matiamũcookeirie ũndũ o na ũmwe.
Elijah came near to all the people, and said, “How long will you waver between the two sides? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” The people didn’t say a word.
22 Hĩndĩ ĩyo Elija akĩmeera atĩrĩ, “Niĩ nyiki no niĩ ndigĩtwo ndĩ mũnabii wa Jehova, no Baali arĩ na anabii magana mana ma mĩrongo ĩtano.
Then Elijah said to the people, “I, even I only, am left as a prophet of the LORD; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men.
23 Tũreherei ndegwa igĩrĩ. Reke methuurĩre ndegwa ĩmwe, na mamĩtinangie icunjĩ, macooke mamĩigĩrĩre ngũ igũrũ, no matigaakie mwaki. Na niĩ haarĩrie ndegwa ĩyo ĩngĩ, na ndĩmĩigĩrĩre ngũ igũrũ, na ndigwakia mwaki.
Let them therefore give us two bulls; and let them choose one bull for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under; and I will dress the other bull, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under it.
You call on the name of your god, and I will call on the LORD’s name. The God who answers by fire, let him be God.” All the people answered, “What you say is good.”
25 Elija akĩĩra anabii a Baali atĩrĩ, “Thuurai ndegwa ĩmwe, mwambĩrĩrie kũmĩhaarĩria, tondũ nĩ inyuĩ mũkĩrĩ aingĩ. Mũkaĩre rĩĩtwa rĩa ngai wanyu, na mũtigaakie mwaki.”
Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one bull for yourselves, and dress it first, for you are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under it.”
26 Tondũ ũcio makĩoya ndegwa ĩrĩa maaheirwo makĩmĩhaarĩria. Magĩkaĩra rĩĩtwa rĩa Baali kuuma rũciinĩ nginya mĩaraho, makĩanĩrĩra makiugaga atĩrĩ, “Wee Baali tũigue!” No matiigana gũcookerio, tondũ gũtiarĩ mũndũ wa kũmacookeria. Nao makĩrũgarũga, makĩinaga, na magĩthiũrũrũkaga kĩgongona kĩu maathondekete.
They took the bull which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, “Baal, hear us!” But there was no voice, and nobody answered. They leapt about the altar which was made.
27 Mĩaraho yakinya-rĩ, Elija akĩambĩrĩria kũmanyũrũria, akĩmeera atĩrĩ, “Anĩrĩrai mũno! Ti-itherũ we akĩrĩ ngai! No gũkorwo e na maũndũ areciiria, kana e na mĩhangʼo, kana agathiĩ rũgendo. No gũkorwo nĩakomete na no nginya okĩrio.”
At noon, Elijah mocked them, and said, “Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is deep in thought, or he has gone somewhere, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he sleeps and must be awakened.”
28 Tondũ ũcio makĩanĩrĩra mũno, na magĩĩtemanga na hiũ cia njora na matimũ, nginya thakame ĩkĩambĩrĩria kũnyũrũrũka, tondũ ũcio nĩguo warĩ mũtugo wao.
They cried aloud, and cut themselves in their way with knives and lances until the blood gushed out on them.
When midday was past, they prophesied until the time of the evening offering; but there was no voice, no answer, and nobody paid attention.
30 Ningĩ Elija akĩĩra andũ othe atĩrĩ, “Okokaai hakuhĩ na niĩ” Nao andũ acio magĩthiĩ hakuhĩ nake. Elija agĩcookereria kĩgongona kĩa Jehova tondũ nĩgĩathũkangĩtio.
Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me!”; and all the people came near to him. He repaired the LORD’s altar that had been thrown down.
31 Elija akĩoya mahiga ikũmi na meerĩ kũringana na mĩhĩrĩga ya njiarwa cia Jakubu, ũrĩa wakinyĩirwo nĩ kiugo kĩa Jehova akĩĩrwo atĩrĩ, “Ũrĩĩtagwo Isiraeli.”
Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the LORD’s word came, saying, “Israel shall be your name.”
32 Nake agĩaka kĩgongona na mahiga macio rĩĩtwa-inĩ rĩa Jehova, na akĩenja mũtaro mwariĩ ũngĩiganĩra ibaba igĩrĩ cia mbegũ, ũkĩrigiicĩria kĩgongona kĩu.
With the stones he built an altar in the LORD’s name. He made a trench around the altar large enough to contain two seahs of seed.
33 Akĩara ngũ, agĩtinangia ndegwa ĩyo icunjĩ, na akĩmĩigĩrĩra ngũ igũrũ. Ningĩ akĩmeera atĩrĩ, “Iyũriai mĩtũngi ĩna mĩnene maaĩ, mũmaitĩrĩrie igũrũ rĩa iruta na igũrũ rĩa ngũ.”
He put the wood in order, and cut the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood. He said, “Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.”
34 Akĩmeera atĩrĩ, “Ĩkai ũguo rĩngĩ,” nao magĩĩka o ro ũguo. Akĩmaatha akĩmeera atĩrĩ, “Ĩkai ũguo riita rĩa gatatũ,” nao magĩĩka ũguo riita rĩa gatatũ.
He said, “Do it a second time;” and they did it the second time. He said, “Do it a third time;” and they did it the third time.
35 Namo maaĩ macio magĩtherera gũthiũrũrũka kĩgongona, o na makĩiyũra mũtaro.
The water ran around the altar; and he also filled the trench with water.
36 Ihinda rĩa kũruta igongona-rĩ, mũnabii Elija agĩokooka hau mbere na akĩhooya atĩrĩ: “Wee Jehova Ngai wa Iburahĩmu, na Isaaka, na Isiraeli, reke kũmenyeke ũmũthĩ atĩ Wee nĩwe Ngai thĩinĩ wa Isiraeli, na ningĩ atĩ niĩ ndĩ ndungata yaku na njĩkĩte maũndũ maya mothe o ta ũrĩa ũnjathĩte.
At the time of the evening offering, Elijah the prophet came near and said, “LORD, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word.
37 Njigua, Wee Jehova, njigua, nĩgeetha andũ aya mamenye atĩ Wee Jehova nĩwe Ngai, na atĩ nĩũkũgarũra ngoro ciao igũcookerere.”
Hear me, LORD, hear me, that this people may know that you, LORD, are God, and that you have turned their heart back again.”
Then the LORD’s fire fell and consumed the burnt offering, the wood, the stones, and the dust; and it licked up the water that was in the trench.
39 Hĩndĩ ĩrĩa andũ othe moonire ũndũ ũcio, makĩgũa, magĩturumithia mothiũ thĩ, makĩanĩrĩra makiuga atĩrĩ, “Jehova nĩwe Ngai! Jehova nĩwe Ngai!”
When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces. They said, “The LORD, he is God! The LORD, he is God!”
40 Nake Elija agĩatha andũ acio akĩmeera atĩrĩ, “Nyiitai anabii acio a Baali. Mũtikareke o na ũmwe wao oore!” Nao makĩmanyiita, nake Elija akiuga maikũrũkio gĩtuamba-inĩ gĩa Kishoni mooragĩrwo kuo.
Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal! Don’t let one of them escape!” They seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and killed them there.
Elijah said to Ahab, “Get up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain.”
42 Nĩ ũndũ ũcio Ahabu agĩthiĩ, akĩrĩa na akĩnyua, nowe Elija akĩambata Kĩrĩma igũrũ gĩa Karimeli, akĩinamĩrĩra nginya thĩ, agĩtoonyia mũtwe gatagatĩ ka maru make.
So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed himself down on the earth, and put his face between his knees.
43 Nake akĩĩra ndungata yake atĩrĩ, “Thiĩ ũcũthĩrĩrie iria-inĩ,” nayo ĩkĩambata ĩgĩcũthĩrĩria. Ĩkiuga atĩrĩ, “Hatirĩ kĩndũ.” Nake Elija akĩmĩĩra ĩcooke ho rĩngĩ na rĩngĩ maita mũgwanja.
He said to his servant, “Go up now and look towards the sea.” He went up and looked, then said, “There is nothing.” He said, “Go again” seven times.
44 Riita rĩa mũgwanja ndungata ĩyo ĩkĩmwĩra atĩrĩ, “Nĩ harĩ na gatu kanini kaigana guoko kwa mũndũ karoimĩra kuuma iria-inĩ.” Nĩ ũndũ ũcio Elija akĩmĩĩra atĩrĩ, “Thiĩ ũkeere Ahabu atĩrĩ, ‘Ohania ngaari yaku ya ita, ũikũrũke ũtanahingĩrĩrio nĩ mbura.’”
On the seventh time, he said, “Behold, a small cloud, like a man’s hand, is rising out of the sea.” He said, “Go up, tell Ahab, ‘Get ready and go down, so that the rain doesn’t stop you.’”
45 Hĩndĩ ĩyo igũrũ rĩgĩthimba nĩ ũndũ wa matu, na rũhuho rũkĩhurutana, gũkiura mbura nene, nake Ahabu akĩhaica ngaari yake agĩthiĩ Jezireeli.
In a little while, the sky grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.
The LORD’s hand was on Elijah; and he tucked his cloak into his belt and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
