Philipper 1

1 Paulus und Timotheus, Knechte Jesu Christi an alle Heiligen in Christi Jesu zu Philippi, samt Vorständen und Diakonen,

Paul and Timothy, slaves of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons:

2 Gnade euch, und Friede von Gott unserem Vater und dem Herrn Jesus Christus.

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and Sovereign Jesus Christ.

3 Ich danke meinem Gott, sooft ich euer Gedenke,

I thank my God every time I remember you;

4 Was ich allezeit tue in jeglichem Gebet für euch und alle, und mit Freuden bete ich

in all my prayers for all of you I always pray with joy,

5 Über eurer Gemeinschaft am Evangelium von ersten Tage an bis heute;

because of your partnership in the Gospel from the first day until now,

6 Indem ich der Zuversicht bin, daß, Der in euch das gute Werk angefangen hat, es auch vollführen wird bis zum Tage Jesu Christi.

being certain of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will complete it until the Day of Jesus Christ;

7 Wie es denn recht und billig ist, daß ich so von euch allen denke, weil ich euch im Herzen trage, in meinen Banden und bei der Verteidigung und Bestätigung des Evangeliums, als die ihr alle mit mir der Gnade teilhaftig seid.

just as it is right for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart, inasmuch as both in my chains and in the defense and confirmation of the Gospel you all are partakers with me of the Grace.

8 Denn Gott ist mein Zeuge, wie sehr mich nach euch allen verlangt in der innigen Liebe Jesu Christi.

God is my witness how I long for you all with the affection of Jesus Christ.

9 Und darum bete ich, daß eure Liebe mehr und mehr reich werde an aller Erkenntnis und Einsicht.

This is what I pray: that your love may abound yet more and more in real knowledge and full discernment,

10 Daß ihr prüfen möget, was recht und unrecht ist, auf daß ihr lauter und unanstößig seid auf den Tag von Christus,

for you to identify the things that really matter; that you may be sincere and blameless until the Day of Christ,

11 Erfüllt mit Früchten der Gerechtigkeit, durch Jesus Christus, zur Ehre und zum Lobe Gottes.

having been filled with the fruits of righteousness that are through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

12 Ich tue euch aber zu wissen, Brüder, daß, was mit mir geschehen ist, nur mehr zur Förderung des Evangeliums geraten ist.

Now I want you to know, brothers, that the events against me have actually turned out for the advancement of the Gospel:

13 Also daß meine Bande offenbar geworden sind in Christus im ganzen Prätorium und sonst überall,

as a result, it has become evident to the whole imperial guard, and to everyone else, that I am in chains for Christ;

14 Und die meisten Brüder in dem Herrn durch meine Bande Zuversicht gewonnen und desto kühner geworden sind, furchtlos das Wort zu verkünden.

also, most of the brothers in Sovereign have been influenced by my chains to be much bolder, to speak the Word fearlessly.

15 Zwar gibt es auch einige, die Christus des Neides und Streites wegen verkünden, andere aber auch tun es aus guter Meinung.

To be sure, some are even preaching Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of good will;

16 Die es aus Liebe tun, wissen, daß ich um des Evangeliums willen zur Verantwortung da bin.

the former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, thinking to add to my affliction while in chains,

17 Die es aus Streitsucht tun, verkündigen Christus in unlauterer Absicht, um mich in meinen Banden in Trübsal zu bringen.

but the latter out of love, knowing that I am set here for the defense of the Gospel.

18 Was tut es aber, wenn nur jedenfalls, sei es aus Heuchelei oder in Wahrheit, Christus verkündigt wird; und darüber freue ich mich und werde mich freuen.

No problem: in every way, be it in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in this I rejoice—yes, and will rejoice.

19 Denn ich weiß, daß mir dies durch euer Gebet und den Beistand des Geistes Jesu Christi zum Heile gereichen wird.

You see, I know that this will turn out for my deliverance (through your supplication and the support of the Spirit of Jesus Christ)

20 Nach meiner Zuversicht und Hoffnung, daß ich in keinerlei Stück zuschanden werde, und daß mit aller Freimütigkeit, wie immer, so auch jetzt Christus verherrlicht werden soll an meinem Leibe, sei es im Leben oder durch den Tod.

according to my earnest expectation and hope that I will not be put to shame in anything but be truly bold, so that now as always Christ will be glorified in my person, whether by life or by death

21 Denn Christus ist mein Leben, und Sterben ist mein Gewinn.

—to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

22 Wenn aber im Fleische leben dazu dient, meinem Werk Frucht zu bringen, so weiß ich nicht, was ich wählen soll.

Now if I am to live on in the flesh it will mean fruitful labor for me, so I do not know what to choose.

23 Denn es drängt mich von beiden Seiten, ich habe Lust abzuscheiden und bei Christus zu sein; was auch viel besser für mich wäre.

I am torn between the two: I have the desire to depart and be with Christ (far better),

24 Aber es ist notwendiger euretwegen, daß ich im Fleische bleibe.

but to remain in the flesh is more necessary, because of you.

25 Und soviel weiß ich mit Zuversicht, daß ich bleiben und bei euch allen verbleiben werde, zu eurer Förderung und Freudigkeit im Glauben;

So having been persuaded of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy in the faith,

26 Damit ihr euch, so ich wieder zu euch komme, in Jesus Christus an mir rühmen möget.

so that your rejoicing over me may be more abundant in Christ Jesus, through my coming to you again.

27 So wandelt nur würdig des Evangeliums Christi, auf daß, ob ich komme und euch sehe, oder abwesend von euch höre, ihr fest steht in einem Geiste und einem Sinn, und samt uns kämpft für den Glauben an das Evangelium.

Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the Gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you, or am absent, I may hear about you that you stand firm in one spirit, striving together for the faith of the Gospel with one soul,

28 Und euch in keinem Stück abschrecken lasset von den Widersachern, was für sie zum Verderben, euch aber zum Heile dient, und das von Gott aus.

and not being intimidated in any way by your opponents: to them this is an indicator of ruin, but to you of deliverance, and that from God.

29 Denn euch ward vergönnt um Christus willen, nicht allein an Ihn zu glauben, sondern auch um Seinetwillen zu leiden;

For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe into Him, but also to suffer for His sake,

30 Und habt denselben Kampf, wie ihr ihn an mir gesehen habt und nun von mir hört.

having the same struggle that you saw in me and now hear to be in me.
