Lukas 14
1 Und es geschah, daß Er in das Haus eines der Obersten der Pharisäer kam, am Sabbath das Brot zu essen; und sie hielten auf Ihn.
One day--it was a Sabbath--He was taking a meal at the house of one of the Rulers of the Pharisee party, while they were closely watching Him.
2 Und siehe, da war vor Ihm ein Mensch, der war wassersüchtig.
In front of Him was a man suffering from dropsy.
3 Und Jesus antwortete und sprach zu den Gesetzlehrern und Pharisäern und sagte: Ist es erlaubt, am Sabbath zu heilen?
This led Jesus to ask the lawyers and Pharisees, "Is it allowable to cure people on the Sabbath?"
4 Sie waren aber stille. Und Er nahm ihn, machte ihn gesund und entließ ihn.
They gave Him no answer; so He took hold of the man, cured him, and sent him away.
5 Und Er antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Welcher ist unter euch, dem ein Esel oder ein Ochs in den Brunnen fällt, und der ihn nicht alsbald heraufzieht am Tage des Sabbaths?
Then He turned to them and said, "Which of you shall have a child or an ox fall into a well on the Sabbath day, and will not immediately lift him out?"
6 Und sie vermochten Ihm nicht darauf zu entgegnen.
To this they could make no reply.
7 Er aber sagte denen, die gerufen waren, ein Gleichnis, da Er bemerkte, daß sie sich die ersten Plätze auswählten, und sprach zu ihnen:
Then, when He noticed that the invited guests chose the best seats, He used this as an illustration and said to them,
8 Wenn du von jemand zur Hochzeit gerufen wirst, so laß dich nicht nieder an den ersten Platz. Es möchte sonst ein Geehrterer denn du von ihm gerufen sein,
"When any one invites you to a wedding banquet, do not take the best seat, lest perhaps some more honoured guest than you may have been asked,
9 Und der, so dich und ihn gerufen hat, kommen und zu dir sagen: Gib diesem den Platz, da du dann beschämt den letzten Platz einnehmen müßtest.
and the man who invited you both will come and will say to you, 'Make room for this guest,' and then you, ashamed, will move to the lowest place.
10 Sondern wenn du geladen wirst, gehe hin, laß dich an den letzten Platz nieder, auf daß, wenn der kommt, der dich geladen hat, er zu dir spreche: Rücke weiter hinauf, mein Freund, und du dann Ehre habest vor denen, die mit dir zu Tische liegen.
On the contrary, when you are invited go and take the lowest place, that when your host comes round he may say to you, 'My friend, come up higher.' This will be doing you honour in the presence of all the other guests.
11 Denn wer sich selbst erhöht, der wird erniedrigt, und wer sich selbst erniedrigt, der wird erhöht werden.
For whoever uplifts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be uplifted.
12 Er sprach aber auch zu dem, der Ihn geladen hatte: Wenn du ein Mittagsmahl oder ein Abendmahl machst, so rufe nicht deine Freunde noch deine Brüder, noch deine Verwandten, noch reiche Nachbarn, auf daß nicht etwa auch sie dich wieder laden, und dir Vergeltung werde;
Also to His host, who had invited Him, He said, "When you give a breakfast or a dinner, do not invite your friends or brothers or relatives or rich neighbours, lest perhaps they should invite you in return and a requital be made you.
13 Sondern wenn du ein Mahl machst, so rufe Arme, Krüppel, Lahme, Blinde;
But when you entertain, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind;
14 Und du wirst selig sein; weil sie nichts haben, es dir zu vergelten; denn bei der Auferstehung der Gerechten wird es dir vergolten werden.
and you will be blessed, because they have no means of requiting you, but there will be requital for you at the Resurrection of the righteous."
15 Als solches aber einer derer, die mit zu Tische lagen, hörte, sprach er zu Ihm: Selig ist, der das Brot isset im Reiche Gottes!
After listening to this teaching, one of His fellow guests said to Him, "Blessed is he who shall feast in God's Kingdom."
16 Er aber sprach zu ihm: Es war ein Mensch, der machte ein großes Abendmahl und lud viele ein;
"A man once gave a great dinner," replied Jesus, "to which he invited a large number of guests.
17 Und zur Stunde des Abendmahls sandte er seinen Knecht aus und ließ denen, die geladen waren, sagen: Kommet, denn alles ist schon bereitet.
At dinner-time he sent his servant to announce to those who had been invited, "'Come, for things are now ready.'
18 Und sie fingen alle übereins an, sich zu entschuldigen. Der erste sagte ihm: Ich habe ein Feld gekauft und muß notwendig hinausgehen, es zu besehen. Ich bitte dich, entschuldige mich.
"But they all without exception began to excuse themselves. The first told him, "'I have purchased a piece of land, and must of necessity go and look at it. Pray hold me excused.'
19 Und ein anderer sagte: Ich habe fünf Joch Ochsen gekauft, und gehe hin, sie zu prüfen. Ich bitte dich, entschuldige mich.
"A second pleaded, "'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and am on my way to try them. Pray hold me excused.'
20 Und ein anderer sagte: Ich habe ein Weib gefreit, und darum kann ich nicht kommen.
"Another said, "'I am just married. It is impossible for me to come.'
21 Und selbiger Knecht trat herzu und sagte solches seinem Herrn an. Da ward der Hausherr zornig und sprach zu seinem Knecht: Gehe schnell hinaus auf die Straßen und die Gassen der Stadt und führe die Armen und die Krüppel und die Blinden und die Lahmen hier herein!
"So the servant came and brought these answers to his master, and they stirred his anger. "'Go out quickly,' he said, 'into the streets of the city--the wide ones and the narrow. You will see poor men, and crippled, blind, lame: fetch them all in here.'
22 Und der Knecht sprach: Herr, es ist geschehen, wie du verordnet hast, und es ist noch Platz da.
"Soon the servant reported the result, saying, "'Sir, what you ordered is done, and there is room still.'
23 Und der Herr sprach zu dem Knecht: Gehe hinaus auf die Wege und die Zäune und nötige sie hereinzukommen, auf daß mein Haus voll werde.
"'Go out,' replied the master, 'to the high roads and hedge-rows, and compel the people to come in, so that my house may be filled.
24 Denn ich sage euch, daß keiner selbiger Männer, die geladen worden, mein Abendmahl kosten soll.
For I tell you that not one of those who were invited shall taste my dinner.'"
25 Es zog aber viel Gedränge mit Ihm, und Er wandte Sich, und sprach zu ihnen:
On His journey vast crowds attended Him, towards whom He turned and said,
26 So jemand zu Mir kommt und haßt nicht seinen Vater und die Mutter und das Weib und die Kinder und die Brüder und die Schwestern, ja selbst auch seine eigene Seele, der kann Mein Jünger nicht sein.
"If any one is coming to me who does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes and his own life also, he cannot be a disciple of mine.
27 Und wer nicht sein Kreuz trägt und Mir nachkommt, der kann Mein Jünger nicht sein.
No one who does not carry his own cross and come after me can be a disciple of mine.
28 Denn wer von euch, der einen Turm bauen will, setzt sich nicht zuvor hin und berechnet die Kosten, ob er es hat zur Ausführung?
"Which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not sit down first and calculate the cost, asking if he has the means to finish it? --
29 Auf daß nicht, so er den Grund gelegt, und nicht vermag es zu vollenden, alle, die es schauen, anfangen, ihn zu verspotten,
lest perhaps, when he has laid the foundation and is unable to finish, all who see it shall begin to jeer at him,
30 Und zu sagen: Dieser Mensch fing an zu bauen, und vermochte es nicht zu vollenden.
saying, 'This man began to build, but could not finish.'
31 Oder, wo ist ein König, der hinzieht, um mit einem anderen König im Krieg zusammenzutreffen, und sich nicht zuvor hinsetzt und berät, ob er kann mit Zehntausenden begegnen dem der mit Zwanzigtausenden über ihn kommt?
Or what king, marching to encounter another king in war, does not first sit down and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand men to meet the one who is advancing against him with twenty thousand?
32 Ist er es aber nicht, so sendet er, da er noch ferne ist, eine Gesandtschaft und bittet um Frieden.
If not, while the other is still a long way off, he sends messengers and sues for peace.
33 Also ist es mit jeglichem unter euch: so er nicht alles, das er besitzt, aufgibt, kann er nicht Mein Jünger sein.
Just as no one of you who does not detach himself from all that belongs to him can be a disciple of mine.
34 Das Salz ist gut; so aber das Salz fade wird, womit wird man es würzen?
"Salt is good: but if even the salt has become tasteless, what will you use to season it?
35 Es ist weder für das Land, noch für den Düngerhaufen tauglich. Hinaus wirft man es! Wer Ohren hat zu hören, der höre!
Neither for land nor dunghill is it of any use; they throw it away. Listen, every one who has ears to listen with!"
