Richter 8

1 Und die Männer von Ephraim sprachen zu ihm: Warum hast du uns das getan, daß du uns nicht riefst, als du zogst wider Midjan zu streiten? Und sie haderten gewaltig mit ihm.

And the men of Ephraim said to him, Why hast thou treated us thus, that thou calledst us not when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? and they chid with him sharply.

2 Und er sprach zu ihnen: Was habe ich nun getan wie ihr? Ist nicht die Nachlese Ephraims besser, als die Weinlese Abiesers?

And he said to them, What have I done now in comparison of you? [Is] not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?

3 In eure Hand hat Gott die Obersten Midjans gegeben, den Oreb und den Seeb! Und was konnte ich tun, wie ihr? Da ließ ihr Geist von ihm ab, da er solches Wort redete.

God hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then, when he had said that, their anger towards him abated.

4 Und Gideon kam an den Jordan und setzte über, er und die dreihundert Mann, die mit ihm waren, matt, und doch setzten sie nach.

And Gideon came to Jordan, [and] passed over, he, and the three hundred men that [were] with him, faint, yet pursuing [them].

5 Und er sprach zu den Männern von Sukkoth: Gebt doch dem Volke, das mir zu Fuße folgt, einige Laibe Brot, denn sie sind matt, und ich setze hinter dem Sebach und Zalmunna, Midjans Königen, nach.

And he said to the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread to the people that follow me: for they [are] faint, and I am pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.

6 Und die Obersten von Sukkoth sprachen: Hast du die Faust Sebachs und Zalmunnas schon in deiner Hand, daß wir deinem Heere Brot geben sollen?

And the princes of Succoth said, [Are] the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we should give bread to thy army?

7 Und Gideon sprach: Deshalb will ich, wenn Jehovah Sebach und Zalmunna in meine Hand gibt, dann euer Fleisch mit Dornen der Wüste und mit Stechdisteln dreschen.

And Gideon said, Therefore when the LORD hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.

8 Und von dannen zog er hinauf gen Penuel und sprach zu ihnen ebenso. Und die Männer von Penuel antworteten ihm, wie die Männer von Sukkoth geantwortet.

And he went up thence to Penuel, and spoke to them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered [him].

9 Und er sprach auch zu den Männern von Penuel und sagte: Komme ich mit Frieden zurück, so will ich diesen Turm niederreißen.

And he spoke also to the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.

10 Und Sebach und Zalmunna waren in Karkor und ihr Lager mit ihnen bei fünfzehntausend Mann, alle, die noch übrig waren vom ganzen Lager der Söhne des Ostens; der Gefallenen aber waren hundertzwanzigtausend Männer, die das Schwert zogen.

Now Zebah and Zalmunna [were] in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand [men], all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell a hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.

11 Und Gideon zog den Weg der Zeltbewohner hinauf auf der Ostseite von Nobach und Jogbehah und schlug das Lager. Das Lager war sicher.

And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host: for the host was secure.

12 Und Sebach und Zalmunna flohen, und er setzte hinter ihnen nach und fing die zwei Könige Midjans, Sebach und Zalmunna, und scheuchte ihr ganzes Lager.

And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued them, and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.

13 Und Gideon, der Sohn des Joasch, kehrte, bevor die Sonne aufging, vom Streite zurück.

And Gideon the son of Joash returned from battle before the sun [had risen],

14 Und er fing einen Jungen der Männer von Sukkoth auf und befragte ihn. Und der schrieb ihm die Obersten von Sukkoth und ihre Ältesten auf, siebenundsiebzig Männer.

And caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and inquired of him: and he described to him the princes of Succoth, and its elders, [even] seventy seven men.

15 Und er kam zu den Männern von Sukkoth und sprach. Siehe, hier sind Sebach und Zalmunna, wegen derer ihr mich geschmäht und gesagt habt: Sind die Fäuste Sebachs und Zalmunnas schon in deiner Hand, daß wir deinen Männern, die matt sind, Brot geben sollen?

And he came to the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye upbraided me, saying, [Are] the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we should give bread to thy men [that are] weary?

16 Und er nahm die Ältesten der Stadt und Dornen der Wüste und Stechdisteln und ließ die Männer von Sukkoth sie fühlen.

And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness, and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.

17 Und den Turm von Penuel riß er nieder und erwürgte die Männer der Stadt.

And he beat down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.

18 Und zu Sebach und Zalmunna sprach er: Wie waren die Männer, die ihr auf Thabor erwürgtet? Und sie sprachen: Wie du, so waren sie, ein jeder von Gestalt wie Königssöhne.

Then said he to Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men [were they] whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou [art], so [were] they; each one resembled the children of a king.

19 Und er sprach. Es waren meine Brüder, meiner Mutter Söhne. Beim Leben Jehovahs: Wenn ihr sie hättet leben lassen, so wollte ich euch nicht erwürgen.

And he said, They [were] my brethren, [even] the sons of my mother: [as] the LORD liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you.

20 Und er sprach zu Jether, seinem Erstgeborenen: Stehe auf und erwürge sie. Der Junge aber zog sein Schwert nicht, denn er fürchtete sich, weil er noch ein Junge war.

And he said to Jether his first-born, Arise, [and] slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he [was] yet a youth.

21 Und Sebach und Zalmunna sprachen: Stehe du auf und stoß auf uns, denn wie der Mann ist, ist auch seine Macht. Und Gideon stand auf und erwürgte Sebach und Zalmunna nun und nahm dann die Halbmonde, die an den Hälsen ihrer Kamele waren.

Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man [is], [so is] his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that [were] on their camels' necks.

22 Und die Männer Israels sprachen zu Gideon: Herrsche du über uns, du und auch dein Sohn und auch deines Sohnes Sohn; denn du hast uns aus der Hand Midjans gerettet.

Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.

23 Und Gideon sprach zu ihnen: Ich will nicht herrschen über euch, und auch mein Sohn soll nicht herrschen über euch. Jehovah soll über euch herrschen!

And Gideon said to them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you.

24 Und Gideon sprach zu ihnen: Eine Bitte will ich mir von euch erbitten: So gebt mir ein jeder Mann den Ring von seiner Beute; denn sie hatten goldene Ringe, weil sie Ischmaeliten waren.

And Gideon said to them, I would desire a request of you, that you would give me every man the ear-rings of his prey. (For they had golden ear-rings, because they [were] Ishmaelites.)

25 Und sie sprachen: Wir wollen sie geben. Und sie breiteten ein Gewand aus, und sie warfen darein, jeder Mann den Ring von seiner Beute.

And they answered, We will willingly give [them]. And they spread a garment, and cast into it every man the ear-rings of his prey.

26 Und das Gewicht der goldenen Ringe, die er sich erbeten, war tausendsiebenhundert Goldschekel außer den Halbmonden und Ohrgehängen und Purpurkleidern, die Midjans Könige anhatten, und außer dem Halsgehänge am Halse der Kamele.

And the weight of the golden ear-rings that he requested, was a thousand and seven hundred [shekels] of gold; besides ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that [was] on the kings of Midian, and besides the chains that [were] about their camels' necks.

27 Und Gideon machte es zu einem Ephod, und stellte es auf in seiner Stadt Ophrah; und ganz Israel buhlte ihm nach daselbst; und es ward Gideon und seinem Hause zum Fallstricke.

And Gideon made of it an ephod, and put it in his city, [even] in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither astray after it: which thing became a snare to Gideon, and to his house.

28 Midjan aber beugte sich vor den Söhnen Israels und sie erhoben ihr Haupt nicht mehr, und das Land war stille vierzig Jahre in den Tagen Gideons.

Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they raised their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.

29 Und Jerubbaal, der Sohn des Joasch, ging hin und wohnte in seinem Hause.

And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.

30 Und Gideon hatte siebzig Söhne, die aus seiner Hüfte hervorgingen; denn er hatte viele Weiber.

And Gideon had seventy sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives.

31 Und sein Kebsweib, das er in Schechem hatte, gebar ihm auch einen Sohn, dem er den Namen Abimelech gab.

And his concubine that [was] in Shechem, she also bore him a son, whose name he called Abimelech.

32 Gideon, der Sohn des Joasch, starb in gutem Greisenalter und ward begraben im Grab des Joasch, seines Vaters, in Ophrah der Abieseriter.

And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulcher of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abi-ezrites.

33 Und es geschah, als Gideon gestorben war, da kehrten die Söhne Israels zurück und buhlten den Baalim nach, und setzten Baal-Berith zu ihrem Gotte.

And it came to pass as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went astray after Baalim, and made Baal-berith their god.

34 Und die Söhne Israels gedachten nicht an Jehovah, ihren Gott, Der sie aus der Hand aller ihrer Feinde ringsum errettet hatte,

And the children of Israel remembered not the LORD their God, who had delivered them from the hands of all their enemies on every side:

35 Und taten keine Barmherzigkeit dem Hause des Jerubbaal-Gideon nach all dem Guten, das er an Israel getan.

Neither showed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, [namely] Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shown to Israel.
