Richter 21
1 Und die Männer Israels hatten in Mizpah geschworen und gesagt: Kein Mann von uns soll seine Tochter dem Benjamin zum Weibe geben.
The sons of Israel had also taken an oath at Mizpah, and they said, “None of us shall give his daughters as a wife to the sons of Benjamin.”
2 Und das Volk kam gen Bethel und blieb allda bis zum Abend vor Gott, und sie hoben auf ihre Stimme und weinten mit gro-ßem Weinen.
And they all went to the house of God at Shiloh. And sitting in his sight until evening, they lifted up their voice, and they began to weep, with a great wailing, saying,
3 Und sie sprachen: Warum, o Jehovah, Gott Israels, geschah dies in Israel, daß heute ein Stamm vermißt wird aus Israel?
“Why, O Lord, God of Israel, has this evil happened among your people, so that this day one tribe would be taken away from us?”
4 Und es geschah am morgenden Tag, daß sich das Volk früh aufmachte und baute allda einen Altar und opferte Brand- und Dankopfer auf.
Then, rising at first light on the next day, they built an altar. And they offered holocausts and victims of peace offerings there, and they said,
5 Und die Söhne Israels sprachen: Wer ist es von allen Stämmen Israels, der nicht heraufgekommen ist in die Versammlung zu Jehovah? Denn der große Schwur geschah, daß, wer nicht zu Jehovah nach Mizpah heraufgekommen ist, der, sprach man, sollte des Todes sterben!
“Who, out of all the tribes of Israel, did not ascend with the army of the Lord?” For they had bound themselves with a great oath, when they were at Mizpah, that whoever was not present would be slain.
6 Und es reute die Söhne Israels wegen ihres Bruders Benjamin und sie sprachen: Heute ist ein Stamm aus Israel niedergehauen!
And the sons of Israel, having been led to repentance over their brother Benjamin, began to say: “One tribe has been taken away from Israel.
7 Was sollen wir mit ihnen, mit den Übriggebliebenen behufs der Weiber tun? Wir haben ja geschworen bei Jehovah, daß wir ihnen keine von unseren Töchtern zu Weibern geben.
From where shall they receive wives? For we have all sworn in common that we will not give our daughters to them.”
8 Und sie sprachen: Wer ist der eine aus den Stämmen Israels, der nicht zu Jehovah nach Mizpah heraufgekommen ist. Und siehe, es war kein Mann aus Jabesch Gilead in das Lager zu der Versammlung gekommen.
For this reason, they said, “Who is there, out of all the tribes of Israel, that did not ascend to the Lord at Mizpah?” And behold, the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead were found not to have been among that army.
9 Und das Volk ward gemustert, und siehe, es war kein Mann da von den Einwohnern von Jabesch Gilead.
(Likewise, in the time when they had been at Shiloh, not one of them was found to be there.)
10 Und die Gemeinde sandte dorthin zwölftausend Männer von den Söhnen der Tapferkeit, und sie geboten ihnen und sprachen: Gehet hin und schlaget die Einwohner von Jabesch Gilead mit der Schärfe des Schwertes, beides, Weiber und Kinder.
And so they sent ten thousand very robust men, and they instructed them, saying, “Go and strike down the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead with the edge of the sword, including their wives and little ones.”
11 Und dies ist das Ding, das ihr tun sollt, jedes Männliche und jedes Weib, welches das Beilager des Männlichen gekannt, sollt ihr verbannen.
And this shall be what you ought to do: “Every one of the male gender, as well as all the women who have known men, shall be put to death. But the virgins you shall reserve.”
12 Und sie fanden unter den Einwohnern von Jabesch Gilead vierhundert Mädchen, Jungfrauen, die noch keinen Mann im Beilager des Männlichen erkannt, und brachten sie zum Lager nach Schiloh, das im Lande Kanaan ist.
And four hundred virgins, who had not known the bed of a man, were found from Jabesh-Gilead. And they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, in the land of Canaan.
13 Und die ganze Gemeinde sandte, und sie redeten mit den Söhnen Benjamins, die auf der Felsenklippe Rimmon waren, und riefen ihnen Frieden zu.
And they sent messengers to the sons of Benjamin, who were at the rock of Rimmon, and they instructed them, so that they would receive them in peace.
14 Und Benjamin kehrte zurück um selbige Zeit, und sie gaben ihnen die Weiber, die man von den Weibern in Jabesch Gilead hatte am Leben gelassen; aber man fand sie nicht zureichend für sie.
And the sons of Benjamin went, at that time, and wives were given to them from the daughters of Jabesh-Gilead. But others were not found, whom they might give in a similar manner.
15 Und es reute das Volk wegen Benjamins, daß Jehovah bei den Stämmen Israels einen Durchbruch gemacht hatte.
And all of Israel was very saddened, and they did penance for destroying one tribe out of Israel.
16 Und die Ältesten der Gemeinde sprachen: Was sollen wir tun für die Überbleibenden behufs der Weiber? das Weib ist ja aus Benjamin vernichtet.
And those greater by birth said: “What shall we do with the remainder, those who have not received wives? For all the females of Benjamin have been cut down,
17 Und sie sprachen: Der Erbbesitz der Entronnen sei des Benjamin, auf daß nicht ein Stamm vertilgt werde aus Israel.
and we must take great care, and make provision with a very great diligence, so that one tribe may not be wiped away from Israel.
18 Und wir können ihnen keine Weiber von unseren Töchtern geben; denn die Söhne Israels haben geschworen und gesagt: Verflucht sei, wer ein Weib gibt einem Benjaminiten.
As for our own daughters, we are not able to give them, being bound by an oath and a curse, when we said, ‘Accursed is he who will give any of his daughters to Benjamin as a wife.’”
19 Und sie sprachen: Siehe, es ist von Jahr zu Jahr ein Fest Jehovahs zu Schiloh, das mitternächtlich von Bethel ist gegen Aufgang der Sonne an der Heerstraße, die von Bethel hinauf gen Sichem geht, und mittäglich von Lebona;
And they took counsel, and they said, “Behold, there is a yearly solemnity of the Lord at Shiloh, which is situated to the north of the city of Bethel, and on the eastern side of the way that one takes from Bethel to Shechem, and to the south of the town of Lebonah.”
20 Und sie geboten den Söhnen Benjamins und sprachen: Geht und legt euch in Hinterhalt in den Weinbergen.
And they instructed the sons of Benjamin, and they said: “Go, and hide in the vineyards.
21 Und ihr werdet sehen, und siehe, Schilohs Töchter kommen heraus zum Tanze im Reigen, da geht ihr heraus aus den Weinbergen, und jeder Mann erhasche sich sein Weib von Schilohs Töchtern und geht nach dem Lande Benjamins.
And when you will have seen daughters of Shiloh being led out to dance, according to custom, go forth suddenly from the vineyards, and let each one seize one wife from among them, and travel into the land of Benjamin.
22 Und es wird geschehen, wenn ihre Väter oder ihre Brüder zu uns kommen, zu hadern, dann wollen wir zu ihnen sprechen: Seid ihnen gnädig unserthalben, wir haben im Streite nicht für jeden Mann sein Weib genommen. Ihr habt sie ihnen ja nicht gegeben, daß ihr zur Zeit würdet schuldig sein.
And when their fathers and brothers arrive, and they begin to complain against you and to argue, we will say to them: ‘Take pity on them. For they have not seized them by right of war or conquest. Instead, begging to receive them, you did not give them, and so the sin was on your part.’”
23 Und Benjamins Söhne taten also und holten sich Weiber nach ihrer Zahl von den Tänzerinnen, die sie entrissen, und gingen hin und kehrten zurück zu ihrem Erbe, und bauten die Städte und wohnten darin.
And so the sons of Benjamin did just as they had been ordered. And according to their number, they seized for themselves one wife each, out of those who were led out dancing. And they went into their own possession, and they built up their cities, and they lived in them.
24 Und die Söhne Israels zogen ab von da zu selbiger Zeit, jeder Mann zu seinem Stamm und zu seiner Familie, und sie gingen aus von dannen, jeder Mann zu seinem Erbe.
The sons of Israel also returned, according to their tribes and families, to their tents.
25 In jenen Tagen war kein König in Israel, ein jeder Mann tat, was recht in seinen Augen war.
In those days, there was no king in Israel. Instead, each one did what seemed right to himself.
