Josua 8
1 Und Jehovah sprach zu Joschua: Fürchte dich nicht und entsetze dich nicht. Nimm alles Kriegsvolk mit dir und mache dich auf und zieh hinauf nach Ai. Siehe, Ich habe den König von Ai und sein Volk und seine Stadt und sein Land in deine Hand gegeben.
Then Yahweh said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid or discouraged [because of what happened at] Ai. Lead all of your soldiers and go there again. I will help you to defeat the king of Ai, his people, and his city, and [enable you to take] his land.
2 Und du sollst mit Ai und seinem Könige tun, wie du mit Jericho und seinem Könige getan, nur möget ihr ihre Beute und ihr Vieh für euch rauben. Lege dir einen Hinterhalt für die Stadt hinter ihr.
Your army will do to the people of Ai and their king like what you did to the people of Jericho and their king. But this time [I will permit you to] take all their possessions and keep them for yourselves. But first, tell some of your soldiers to [hide behind] the city [and] prepare to suddenly attack it.”
3 Und Joschua machte sich auf und alles Kriegsvolk, um nach Ai hinaufzuziehen. Und Joschua erwählte sich dreißigtausend Mann, Helden der Tapferkeit, und sandte sie ab in der Nacht;
So Joshua led all his army toward Ai. He chose 30,000 of his best fighters/warriors and prepared to send them out during the night.
4 Und er gebot ihnen und sprach: Sehet, ihr sollt wider die Stadt im Hinterhalte liegen hinter der Stadt. Entfernt euch nicht zu sehr von der Stadt, und seid allesamt bereit.
He said to them, “Listen carefully. Some of you must hide on the other side of the city. Do not go far from the city. Just be ready [to attack].
5 Ich aber und alles Volk, das mit mir ist, wir werden uns der Stadt nähern, und wenn sie ausgehen uns entgegen wie zuerst, so werden wir vor ihnen fliehen.
I and the men who are with me will march toward the city [in the morning]. The men in the city will come out to fight us, like they did before. Then we will turn around and start to run away from them.
6 Und sie werden ausziehen uns nach, bis wir sie von der Stadt abgezogen haben; denn sie werden sagen: Sie fliehen vor uns, wie zuerst. Und wir werden fliehen vor ihnen.
They will think that we are running away from them like we did before. So they will chase us away from the city. While we are running away,
7 Ihr aber machet euch aus dem Hinterhalte auf und nehmt die Stadt ein. Und Jehovah, euer Gott, wird sie in eure Hand geben.
[those of you who are hiding come out and] rush into the city and capture it. Yahweh your God will enable you to conquer it.
8 Und es geschehe, wenn ihr die Stadt gewonnen habt, dann sollt ihr die Stadt mit Feuer anzünden; nach dem Worte Jehovahs sollt ihr tun. Sehet, ich habe es euch geboten.
After you capture the city, burn it. Do what Yahweh has commanded us to do. Those are the orders I am giving to you.”
9 Und Joschua entließ sie und sie gingen in den Hinterhalt und blieben zwischen Bethel und Ai auf der Meerseite von Ai. Und Joschua blieb über Nacht inmitten des Volkes in dieser Nacht.
Then Joshua [prepared to] send some of them to [hide and] wait between Ai and Bethel, which was west of Ai. But Joshua stayed with his other soldiers that night.
10 Und am Morgen stand Joschua früh auf, und musterte das Volk und zog hinauf, er und die Ältesten Jehovahs vor dem Volke nach Ai hinauf;
Early the next morning, Joshua gathered his soldiers together. Then he and the other Israeli leaders led them up to Ai.
11 Und alles Kriegsvolk, das mit ihm war, zog hinauf, und sie traten herzu und kamen der Stadt gegenüber, und lagerten gen Mitternacht von Ai, und das Tal war zwischen ihm und Ai.
They all set up their tents close to Ai, just to the north of the city, where all the people of the city could see them. There was a valley between them and the city.
12 Und er nahm bei fünftausend Mann und legte sie zwischen Bethel und Ai auf der Meerseite von Ai in Hinterhalt.
Then Joshua chose about 5,000 men and told them to go and hide just west of the city, between Ai and Bethel.
13 Und so stellten sie das Volk, das ganze Lager, das gegen Mitternacht von der Stadt war, daß der hintere Teil auf der Meerseite der Stadt war, und Jehoschua zog in jener Nacht in die Mitte des Talgrundes.
So those men did that. The main group of soldiers was north of the city, and the others were hiding west of the city. That night Joshua went down into the valley.
14 Und es geschah, als der König von Ai es sah, eilten die Männer von der Stadt und standen früh auf und zogen aus, Israel entgegen, zum Streite, er und all sein Volk, zur bestimmten Zeit vor das Flachland; er wußte aber nicht, daß hinter der Stadt ein Hinterhalt gegen ihn war.
When the king of Ai saw the Israeli army, he and his soldiers got up early the next morning and quickly went out of the city to fight them. They went to a place east of the city, but they did not know that some Israeli soldiers were hiding behind the city.
15 Und Jehoschua und ganz Israel wurden geschlagen vor ihnen, und sie flohen auf dem Wege nach der Wüste.
Joshua and the Israeli soldiers [who were with him] allowed the army of Ai to push them back. They ran toward the desert.
16 Und sie riefen alles Volk in der Stadt, hinter ihnen nachzusetzen, und sie setzten hinter dem Joschua nach und wurden von der Stadt abgezogen.
The men in Ai were ordered to chase after Joshua and his men. So they left the city and started to pursue the Israelis.
17 Und kein Mann verblieb in Ai und Bethel, der nicht ausgezogen wäre, hinter Israel her; und sie ließen die Stadt geöffnet und setzten hinter Israel nach.
All the men of Ai and the men of Bethel pursued the Israeli army. They did not leave even one man in Ai to defend it. The [gates of the] city were left wide open.
18 Und Jehovah sprach zu Joschua: Recke den Wurfspieß in deiner Hand wider Ai aus; denn Ich will sie in deine Hand geben. Und Joschua reckte den Wurfspieß, den er in seiner Hand hatte, wider die Stadt aus.
Then Yahweh said to Joshua, “[Lift up] your spear [and] point it toward Ai, because I am going to enable your soldiers to capture it!” So Joshua pointed [his spear] toward Ai.
19 Und der Hinterhalt stand eilig auf von seinem Orte und sie liefen, wie er seine Hand ausreckte, und kamen in die Stadt und eroberten sie; und sie eilten und steckten die Stadt mit Feuer an.
When the Israeli men who were hiding saw that, they rushed out from the places where they were hiding and ran into the city. They quickly captured it and set it on fire.
20 Und die Männer von Ai wandten sich um hinter sich und sahen, und siehe, der Rauch der Stadt stieg gen Himmel auf, und sie hatten nicht, wohin sie fliehen sollten, dahin oder dorthin, und das Volk, das nach der Wüste geflohen war, kehrte um wider die, so ihnen nachgesetzt hatten.
When the men of Ai looked back, they saw smoke rising from their city. But they could not escape, because the Israeli troops stopped running away.
21 Und Joschua und ganz Israel sahen, daß der Hinterhalt die Stadt erobert hatte und daß der Rauch der Stadt aufging, und sie kehrten um und schlugen die Männer von Ai.
Joshua and his men saw that the men who had been hiding had captured the city and were burning it, and they saw the smoke rising. So they turned around and started to attack the men of Ai.
22 Und jene gingen aus der Stadt ihnen entgegen, so daß sie mitten zwischen Israel waren, die einen von hier und die anderen dorther; und sie schlugen sie, bis daß ihnen kein Rest verblieb, noch einer entkam.
Meanwhile, the soldiers who had captured the city came out [and attacked them from the rear]. So the men of Ai were caught between the two groups of Israeli soldiers. None of the men of Ai escaped. The Israelis fought until they killed all of them. Only the king of Ai was still alive.
23 Und den König von Ai erfaßten sie lebendig und ließen ihn dem Joschua nahen.
Then they seized the king of Ai and brought him to Joshua.
24 Und da Israel alle Einwohner von Ai auf dem Felde in der Wüste, wohin sie ihnen nachsetzten, vollends erwürgt hatte, und alle durch die Schärfe des Schwertes gefallen, so daß sie alle waren, da kehrte ganz Israel nach Ai zurück und sie schlugen es mit der Schärfe des Schwertes.
While they were fighting, the Israeli army pursued the men of Ai into the fields and into the desert, and killed all of them. Then they went to Ai and killed everyone who was there.
25 Und alle, die an jenem Tage gefallen waren, vom Manne bis zum Weibe, waren zwölftausend, alle Leute von Ai.
They killed 12,000 men and women.
26 Und Joschua zog seine Hand, damit er den Wurfspieß ausreckte, nicht zurück, bis daß er alle Einwohner von Ai verbannt hatte.
Joshua continued to point his spear [LIT] toward Ai, until all the people in Ai had been killed.
27 Nur das Vieh und die Beute dieser Stadt nahm Israel als Raub für sich, nach dem Worte Jehovahs, das Er dem Joschua geboten hatte.
The Israeli soldiers took for themselves the animals and the other things that had belonged to the people of Ai, just like Yahweh had told Joshua that they should do.
28 Und Ai verbrannte Joschua und machte es zu einem ewiglichen Schutthaufen, zur Verwüstung, bis auf diesen Tag.
Joshua and his soldiers burned Ai city and caused it to become a pile of ruins. It is still like that today.
29 Und den König von Ai hängte er an einem Baume auf bis zur Zeit des Abends, und da die Sonne unterging, gebot Joschua, daß sie seinen Leichnam vom Baume abnehmen und an den Eingang des Stadttores werfen sollten. Und sie richteten einen großen Steinhaufen über ihm, bis auf diesen Tag.
Joshua hanged the king of Ai on a tree and left his corpse hanging there until the evening. At sunset Joshua told his men to take the king’s corpse down from the tree and to throw it on the ground at the city gate. [After they did that], they piled a lot of rocks on top of the corpse, and that pile of rocks is still there.
30 Nun baute Joschua Jehovah, dem Gotte Israels einen Altar auf dem Berge Ebal,
Joshua [told his men to] build on Ebal Mountain an altar for Yahweh, the God [who is worshiped by] the Israeli people.
31 Wie Mose, der Knecht Jehovahs, den Söhnen Israels geboten hatte, wie geschrieben ist im Gesetzbuche Moses: einen Altar von ganzen Steinen, über die kein Eisen geschwungen ward, und sie opferten darauf Jehovah Brandopfer und schlachteten Dankopfer.
They built it just like Moses, the man who served God [well], had written previously in the laws [that God had given to him]. They made it from stones that had not been cut using iron tools. The Israelis then offered sacrifices to Yahweh that were burned completely on the altar. They also offered sacrifices to restore fellowship with Yahweh.
32 Und allda schrieb er auf die Steine eine Abschrift des Gesetzes Moses, das er vor den Söhnen Israels geschrieben hatte.
As the Israelis watched, Joshua wrote on stones the laws that [Yahweh had given] to Moses previously.
33 Und ganz Israel und seine Ältesten und Vorsteher und seine Richter standen auf beiden Seiten der Lade, gegenüber den Priestern, den Leviten, so die Bundeslade Jehovahs trugen, wie der Fremdling so der Eingeborene; die eine Hälfte gegenüber dem Berge Gerissim, und die andere Hälfte dem Berge Ebal gegenüber, wie Mose, der Knecht Jehovahs, zuerst geboten hatte, das Volk Israel zu segnen.
The Israeli leaders, the officials, the judges, and other Israelis were there, standing nearby. Many people who were not Israelis were also there. Half of the people stood [on one side of the valley] below Ebal Mountain, and the other half of the people stood [on the other side of the valley] below Gerizim Mountain. The sacred chest was [in the valley] between the two groups. That was what Moses had previously commanded that the people should do when [Yahweh was about to] bless them.
34 Und danach las er alle Worte des Gesetzes, den Segen und den Fluch, wie alles geschrieben ist im Buche des Gesetzes.
Then Joshua read [to the people] all that [Moses] had written previously. That included what Yahweh had taught them and the ways [that he promised] to bless them [if they obeyed his commands], or to curse them [if they disobeyed them].
35 Da war kein Wort von allem, das Mose geboten hatte, das Joschua nicht las in Gegenwart der ganzen Versammlung Israels und den Weibern und Kindlein und dem Fremdling, der in ihrer Mitte wandelte.
All the Israelis gathered together [to listen]—the men, the women, and the children. The (foreigners/people who were not Israelis) who were living among them also listened, while Joshua read all the commands that Moses had written.
