Johannes 11
1 Es war aber einer krank, Lazarus von Bethanien, aus dem Flecken Marias und Marthas, ihrer Schwester.
Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
2 Maria war es aber, die den Herrn mit Salbe salbte und Seine Füße mit ihren Haaren abwischte. Derselbigen Bruder Lazarus war krank.
(Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair; it was her brother Lazarus who was sick.)
3 Da sandten die Schwestern an Ihn und ließen Ihm sagen: Herr, siehe, der, den Du lieb hast, ist krank.
So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, behold, the one yoʋ love is sick.”
4 Da Jesus aber es hörte, sprach Er: Diese Krankheit ist nicht zum Tode, sondern um der Herrlichkeit Gottes willen, auf daß der Sohn Gottes durch sie verherrlicht werde.
But when Jesus heard this, he said, “This sickness will not end in death but is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”
5 Jesus aber liebte Martha und ihre Schwester und Lazarus.
Now Jesus loved Martha, her sister Mary, and Lazarus.
6 Als Er nun hörte, daß er krank war, da blieb Er zwei Tage an dem Ort, da Er war.
But when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was for two more days.
7 Danach nach diesem spricht Er zu den Jüngern: Lasset uns wiederum nach Judäa ziehen.
After that he said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.”
8 Die Jünger sagen zu Ihm: Rabbi, eben erst suchten die Juden Dich zu steinigen; und Du gehst wieder dahin?
The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just recently seeking to stone yoʋ, and yet you are going there again?”
9 Jesus antwortete: Sind nicht zwölf Stunden des Tages? Wenn einer am Tage wandelt, stößt er sich nicht, weil er das Licht dieser Welt sieht.
Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
10 Wandelt jemand aber in der Nacht, dann stößt er sich; denn das Licht ist nicht ihn ihm.
But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”
11 Solches sprach Er, und danach sagt Er zu ihnen: Lazarus, unser Freund, schlummert, aber Ich ziehe hin, um ihn aus dem Schlafe zu wecken.
After saying this, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to wake him up.”
12 Sprechen nun Seine Jünger: Herr, wenn er schlummert, so wird er gerettet werden.
His disciples said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”
13 Jesus aber hatte von seinem Tode gesprochen. Sie meinten aber, Er spreche von dem Schlummern des Schlafes.
(They thought Jesus was speaking about natural sleep, but he was actually speaking about Lazarus' death.)
14 Da sagte ihnen nun Jesus frei heraus: Lazarus ist gestorben;
Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died,
15 Und Ich freue Mich um euretwegen, daß Ich nicht dort gewesen bin, auf daß ihr glaubt; aber lasset uns zu ihm ziehen!
and I rejoice for your sake that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
16 Da sprach Thomas, genannt Didymus, zu seinen Mitjüngern: Lasset auch uns ziehen, daß wir mit Ihm sterben.
Then Thomas (called Didymus) said to his fellow disciples, “Let us go too, so that we may die with him.”
17 Als nun Jesus kam, fand Er, daß er schon vier Tage in der Gruft lag.
When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days already.
18 Bethanien aber war nahe bei Jerusalem, bei fünfzehn Stadien.
Now Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem,
19 Und viele von den Juden waren zu denen bei Martha und Maria gekommen, um sie zu vertrösten über ihrem Bruder.
and many of the Jews had joined the women who were with Martha and Mary, to console them about their brother.
20 Als nun Martha hörte, daß Jesus komme, ging sie Ihm entgegen; Maria aber saß im Hause.
When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him, but Mary remained seated in the house.
21 Martha sprach nun zu Jesus: Herr, wärest Du hier gewesen, mein Bruder wäre wohl nicht gestorben.
Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if yoʋ had been here, my brother would not have died.
22 Aber auch nun weiß ich, daß, worum Du Gott bitten wirst, wird Dir Gott geben.
But even now I know that God will give yoʋ whatever yoʋ ask of him.”
23 Spricht Jesus zu ihr: Dein Bruder wird auferstehen.
Jesus said to her, “Yoʋr brother will rise again.”
24 Spricht Martha zu Ihm: Ich weiß, daß er auferstehen wird in der Auferstehung am letzten Tag.
Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”
25 Jesus sprach zu ihr: Ich bin die Auferstehung und das Leben! Wer an Mich glaubt, wird leben, wenn er auch stürbe.
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he may die, yet shall he live.
26 Und wer da lebt und an Mich glaubt, der wird nicht sterben in Ewigkeit. Glaubst Du das? (aiōn g165)
No one who lives and believes in me will ever die. Do yoʋ believe this?” (aiōn g165)
27 Sie spricht zu Ihm: Ja, Herr, ich glaube, daß Du bist der Christus, der Sohn Gottes, Der in die Welt kommen soll.
She said to him, “Yes, Lord, I have come to believe that yoʋ are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”
28 Und als sie das gesagt hatte, ging sie hin und rief insgeheim ihrer Schwester Maria und sprach: Der Lehrer ist da und ruft dich.
After saying this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for yoʋ.”
29 Als diese es hörte, machte sie sich schnell auf und kam zu Ihm.
When Mary heard this, she rose quickly and went to him.
30 Jesus war aber noch nicht in den Flecken gekommen, sondern war an dem Orte, wo Ihm Martha entgegenkam.
(Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha had met him.)
31 Da nun die Juden, die bei ihr im Hause waren und sie vertrösteten, sahen, daß Maria eilig aufstand und hinausging, folgten sie ihr nach und sprachen: Sie geht hin zur Gruft, um dort zu weinen.
When the Jews who were in the house with Mary, consoling her, saw her rise quickly and go out, they followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”
32 Wie nun Maria dahin kam, wo Jesus war, und Ihn sah, fiel sie zu Seinen Füßen und sprach zu Ihm: Herr, wärest Du da gewesen, mein Bruder wäre wohl nicht gestorben.
When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if yoʋ had been here, my brother would not have died.”
33 Wie Jesus nun sie weinen sah, und die Juden weinen, die mit ihr gekommen waren, ergrimmte Er im Geiste und Er Selbst erbebte.
When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and troubled.
34 Und sprach: Wo habt ihr ihn hingelegt? Sie sagen zu Ihm: Herr, komm und siehe es.
He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.”
35 Und Jesus gingen die Augen über.
Jesus wept.
36 Da sagten die Juden: Siehe, wie hat Er ihn so lieb gehabt!
So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”
37 Einige aber aus ihnen sagten: Konnte Er, Der dem Blinden die Augen aufgetan hat, nicht machen, daß auch dieser nicht stürbe?
But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have also kept this man from dying?”
38 Jesus ergrimmte nun wiederum in Sich und kam zu der Gruft. Es war aber eine Höhle und ein Stein lag darauf.
Deeply moved once more, Jesus came to the tomb. (It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.)
39 Jesus sprach: Hebt den Stein weg! Spricht zu Ihm die Schwester des Verstorbenen, Martha: Herr, er riecht schon; denn es ist der vierte Tag.
Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the man who had died, said to him, “Lord, there is already a stench, for it is the fourth day.”
40 Spricht Jesus zu ihr: Sagte Ich dir nicht, wenn du glaubtest, würdest du die Herrlichkeit Gottes sehen?
Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell yoʋ that if yoʋ believed yoʋ would see the glory of God?”
41 Sie hoben nun den Stein weg, da der Verstorbene lag. Jesus aber hob die Augen auf und sprach: Vater, Ich danke Dir, daß Du Mich gehört hast.
So they took away the stone from where the dead man was lying. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank yoʋ that yoʋ have heard me.
42 Ich wußte aber, daß Du Mich allezeit hörst; aber wegen des Gedränges, das umhersteht, habe Ich gesprochen, auf daß sie glauben, daß Du Mich entsandt hast.
I know that yoʋ always hear me, but I say this for the benefit of the crowd that is standing here, so that they may believe that yoʋ sent me.”
43 Und als Er dies gesagt hatte, schrie Er laut mit großer Stimme: Lazarus, komm heraus!
After saying this, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”
44 Und der Verstorbene kam heraus, an Füßen und Händen mit Binden gebunden, und sein Gesicht war mit einem Schweißtuch umbunden. Spricht Jesus zu ihnen: Löset ihn und lasset ihn hingehen.
Then the man who had died came out, his feet and his hands bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
45 Viele nun aus den Juden, die zu Martha gekommen und angesehen hatten, was Er tat, glaubten an Ihn.
Therefore many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him.
46 Etliche aber aus ihnen gingen hin zu den Pharisäern und sagten ihnen, was Jesus getan hatte.
But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
47 Da versammelten die Hohenpriester und die Pharisäer den Rat und sprachen: Was tun wir, dieweil dieser Mensch viele Zeichen tut?
So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened a meeting of the Sanhedrin and said, “What are we going to do? For this man is doing many signs.
48 Lassen wir Ihn also, dann werden alle an Ihn glauben, und die Römer kommen und nehmen uns beides, den Ort und die Völkerschaft weg.
If we allow him to continue like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away our holy place and our nation.”
49 Einer aber aus ihnen, Kaiaphas, der selbigen Jahres Hoherpriester war, sprach zu ihnen: Ihr wißt nichts,
But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You do not know anything,
50 Noch bedenkt ihr, daß es zuträglich für uns ist, ein Mensch sterbe für das Volk, und daß nicht die ganze Völkerschaft verderbe.
nor do you consider that it is better for us to have one man die for the people than to have the whole nation perish.”
51 Dies sprach er aber nicht von ihm selbst; sondern weil er selbigen Jahres Hoherpriester war, weissagte er, daß Jesus für die Völkerschaft sterben würde,
(He said this not of his own accord, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation,
52 Und nicht nur für die Völkerschaft allein, sondern daß Er auch die zerstreuten Kinder Gottes in eins zusammenführete.
and not only for the nation, but also to gather together and unite the children of God scattered abroad.)
53 Von selbigen Tage nun ratschlagten sie, daß sie ihn töteten.
So from that day they plotted together to kill him.
54 Jesus wandelte nun nicht mehr frei heraus unter den Juden, sondern ging von dannen weg in die Gegend nahe bei der Wüste in eine Stadt, genannt Ephraim, und verweilte allda mit Seinen Jüngern.
Therefore Jesus no longer went around openly among the Jews. Instead, he departed from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, where he spent time with his disciples.
55 Es war aber nahe das Pascha der Juden, und viele aus der Gegend gingen vor dem Pascha hinauf nach Jerusalem, um sich zu reinigen.
Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many people went up to Jerusalem from the countryside to purify themselves before the Passover.
56 Sie suchten nun Jesus und sprachen zueinander, wie sie in dem Heiligtum standen: Was dünket euch? Daß Er wohl nicht auf das Fest kommen wird?
They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple courts, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?”
57 Es hatten aber beide, die Hohenpriester und die Pharisäer ein Gebot geben, so jemand erfahre, wo Er wäre, sollte er es anzeigen, daß sie Ihn griffen.
(Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given an order that if anyone knew where Jesus was, he should report it, so that they could arrest him.)
