2 Mose 18

1 Und Jethro, der Priester von Midjan, Moses Schwäher, hörte alles, was Gott an Mose und seinem Volke Israel getan, daß Jehovah Israel von Ägypten herausgebracht hatte;

Now Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, how that YHWH had brought Israel out of Egypt.

2 Und Jethro, Moses Schwäher, nahm Zipporah, Moses Weib, nach ihrer Entlassung;

Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, received Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her away,

3 Und ihre zwei Söhne, von denen der Name des einen Gerschon war; denn er sprach: Ich war ein Fremdling in auswärtigem Lande.

and her two sons. The name of one son was Gershom, for Moses said, "I have lived as a foreigner in a foreign land".

4 Und der Name des anderen war Eleser; denn der Gott meines Vaters war mein Beistand und errette mich von dem Schwerte Pharaos.

The name of the other was Eliezer, for he said, "My father's God was my help and delivered me from Pharaoh's sword."

5 Und es kam Jethro, Moses Schwäher, und seine Söhne und sein Weib zu Mose in die Wüste, wo er lagerte am Berge Gottes,

Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses into the wilderness where he was camped, at the Mountain of God.

6 Und er sprach zu Mose: Ich, dein Schwäher Jethro, komme zu dir und dein Weib und ihre zwei Söhne mit ihr.

And he said to Moses, "I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons with her."

7 Und Mose ging hinaus seinem Schwäher entgegen und verbeugte sich vor ihm und küßte ihn; und sie fragten einander um den Frieden und kamen in das Zelt.

Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and bowed and kissed him. They asked each other of their welfare, and they came into the tent.

8 Und Mose erzählte seinem Schwäher alles, was Jehovah an Pharao und an den Ägyptern um Israels willen getan, all das Mühsal, das sie auf dem Wege getroffen und wie Jehovah sie errettet hätte.

Moses told his father-in-law all that YHWH had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake, all the hardships that had come on them on the way, and how YHWH delivered them.

9 Und Jethro freute sich über alles Gute, das Jehovah an Israel getan, daß Er es aus der Hand der Ägypter errettet hatte.

Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which YHWH had done to Israel, in that he had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians.

10 Und Jethro sprach: Gesegnet sei Jehovah, Der euch errettet aus der Hand der Ägypter und aus der Hand Pharaos, Der das Volk aus der Hand der Ägypter errettet hat.

Jethro said, "Blessed be YHWH, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh; who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

11 Nun weiß ich, daß Jehovah größer ist denn alle Götter; denn es war in der Sache, in der sie sich vermaßen über sie.

Now I know that YHWH is greater than all gods because of the thing in which they dealt arrogantly against them."

12 Und Jethro, Moses Schwäher, nahm für Gott Brandopfer und Schlachtopfer, und Aharon kam und alle Ältesten Israels, das Brot zu essen mit Moses Schwäher vor Gott.

Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God. Aaron came with all of the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father-in-law before God.

13 Und am morgenden Tage geschah, daß Mose saß das Volk zu richten; und das Volk stand bei Mose vom Morgen bis zum Abend.

It happened on the next day, that Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood around Moses from the morning to the evening.

14 Und Moses Schwäher sah alles, was er dem Volke tat, und sagte: Was ist dies, das du dem Volke tust? Warum sitzest du allein und alles Volk stellt sich bei dir vom Morgen bis zum Abend?

When Moses' father-in-law saw all that he did to the people, he said, "What is this thing that you do for the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand around you from morning to evening?"

15 Und Mose sprach zu seinem Schwäher: Das Volk kommt zu mir, Gott zu befragen.

Moses said to his father-in-law, "Because the people come to me to inquire of God.

16 So sie eine Sache haben, kommen sie zu mir, und ich richte zwischen dem Mann und seinem Genossen und lasse sie die Satzungen Gottes und seine Gesetze wissen.

When they have a matter, they come to me, and I judge between a man and his neighbor, and I make them know the statutes of God, and his laws."

17 Und Moses Schwäher sagte zu ihm: Das Wort ist nicht gut, das du tust.

Moses' father-in-law said to him, "The thing that you do is not good.

18 Du ermattest und auch dieses Volk, das bei dir ist. Denn die Sache ist zu schwer für dich, du vermagst es allein nicht zu tun.

You will surely wear away, both you, and this people that is with you; for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to perform it yourself alone.

19 So höre denn auf meine Stimme. Ich will dir raten und Gott sei mit dir! Sei du für das Volk vor Gott und bringe du die Sachen vor Gott.

Listen now to my voice. I will give you counsel, and God be with you. You represent the people before God, and bring the causes to God.

20 Und warne sie ob der Satzungen und Gesetze, und laß sie den Weg wissen, den sie gehen und das Werk, das sie tun sollen.

You shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and shall show them the way in which they must walk, and the work that they must do.

21 Und du erschaue dir aus allem Volk tüchtige Männer, gottesfürchtige, Männer der Wahrheit, die Gewinn hassen, und setze sie über dasselbe als Oberste über tausend, als Oberste über hundert, als Oberste über fünfzig und als Oberste über zehn.

Moreover you shall provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God: men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

22 Und sie sollen das Volk richten zu jeder Zeit. Und soll sein, jede große Sache sollen sie zu dir bringen und jede kleine Sache selber richten; so wirst du es leichter haben und sie tragen mit dir.

Let them judge the people at all times. It shall be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they shall judge themselves. So shall it be easier for you, and they shall share the load with you.

23 Tust du dies Ding und gebietet dir es Gott, so vermagst du zu bestehen, und auch dies Volk mag in Frieden an seinen Ort kommen.

If you will do this thing, and God commands you so, then you will be able to endure, and all of these people also will go to their place in peace."

24 Und Mose hörte auf die Stimme seines Schwähers und tat alles, was er gesagt hatte.

So Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said.

25 Und Mose wählte tüchtige Männer aus ganz Israel und setzte sie zur Häuptern über das Volk, zu Obersten über tausend, zu Obersten über hundert, zu Obersten über fünfzig und zu Obersten über zehn.

Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

26 Und sie richteten das Volk zu jeder Zeit, brachten die härtere Sache zu Mose, und alle kleinere Sache richteten sie selbst.

They judged the people at all times. They brought the hard causes to Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

27 Und Mose entließ seinen Schwäher und er ging für sich in sein Land.

Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went his way into his own land.
