2 Samuel 19

1 Und dem Joab ward angesagt: Siehe, der König weint und trauert über Absalom.

Then it was reported to Joab, “The king is weeping and mourning over Absalom.”

2 Und das Heil war an jenem Tage zur Trauer für alles Volk; denn es hörte das Volk an jenem Tage, daß man sagte: Den König schmerzt es wegen seines Sohnes.

And that day’s victory was turned into mourning for all the people, because on that day they were told, “The king is grieving over his son.”

3 Und das Volk stahl sich an jenem Tag dahin und kam in die Stadt, wie sich das Volk wegstiehlt, das mit Schande im Streit geflohen ist.

So they returned to the city quietly that day, as people steal away in humiliation after fleeing a battle.

4 Und der König verhüllte sein Angesicht, und der König schrie mit großer Stimme: Mein Sohn Absalom! Absalom, mein Sohn, mein Sohn!

But the king covered his face and cried out at the top of his voice, “O my son Absalom! O Absalom, my son, my son!”

5 Und Joab ging hinein zum König in das Haus und sprach: Du hast heute beschämt das Angesicht aller deiner Knechte, die heute deine Seele und die Seele deiner Söhne und deiner Töchter und die Seele deiner Weiber und die Seele deiner Kebsweiber entrinnen ließen,

Then Joab went into the house and said to the king, “Today you have disgraced all your servants who have saved your life and the lives of your sons and daughters, of your wives, and of your concubines.

6 Indem du liebst, die dich hassen, und hassest, die dich lieben; denn du hast heute angesagt, daß dir Oberste und Knechte nichts sind; denn heute weiß ich, daß, wenn nur Absalom am Leben geblieben wäre und wir alle heute tot wären, es dir dann so recht in deinen Augen wäre.

You love those who hate you and hate those who love you! For you have made it clear today that the commanders and soldiers mean nothing to you. I know today that if Absalom were alive and all of us were dead, it would have pleased you!

7 Und nun steh auf, geh hinaus und rede zum Herzen deiner Knechte, denn bei Jehovah schwöre ich, daß, so du nicht hinausgehst, kein Mann diese Nacht bei dir übernachtet, und daß dieses Böse ärger ist, als alles Böse, das von deiner Jugend bis jetzt über dich gekommen ist.

Now therefore get up! Go out and speak comfort to your servants, for I swear by the LORD that if you do not go out, not a man will remain with you tonight. This will be worse for you than all the adversity that has befallen you from your youth until now!”

8 Und der König stand auf und saß im Tor, und sie sagten es allem Volk an und sprachen: Siehe, der König sitzt im Tore, und alles Volk kam vor des Königs Angesicht; Israel aber floh, ein jeder Mann zu seinen Zelten.

So the king got up and sat in the gate, and all the people were told: “Behold, the king is sitting in the gate.” So they all came before the king. Meanwhile, the Israelites had fled, each man to his home.

9 Und alles Volk in allen Stämmen Israels rechtete und sprach: Der König hat uns aus der Hand unserer Feinde errettet, und aus der Hand der Philister uns entrinnen lassen, und jetzt ist er entwichen aus dem Lande wegen Absalom.

And all the people throughout the tribes of Israel were arguing, “The king rescued us from the hand of our enemies and delivered us from the hand of the Philistines, but now he has fled the land because of Absalom.

10 Und Absalom, den wir über uns gesalbt, ist im Streite gestorben. Warum schweigt ihr jetzt stille, daß ihr den König nicht zurückbringt?

But Absalom, the man we anointed over us, has died in battle. So why do you say nothing about restoring the king?”

11 Und König David sandte an die Priester Zadok und Abjathar, und ließ ihnen sagen: Redet zu den Ältesten Judahs und sprechet: Warum wollt ihr die letzten sein, den König in sein Haus zurückzubringen, indes die Rede von ganz Israel darüber vor dem König in sein Haus kommt?

Then King David sent this message to Zadok and Abiathar, the priests: “Say to the elders of Judah, ‘Why should you be the last to restore the king to his palace, since the talk of all Israel has reached the king at his quarters?

12 Ihr seid meine Brüder, mein Gebein und mein Fleisch seid ihr, und warum solltet ihr die letzten sein, den König zurückzubringen?

You are my brothers, my own flesh and blood. So why should you be the last to restore the king?’

13 Und zu Amasa sprechet: Bist du nicht mein Gebein und mein Fleisch? So tue mir Gott, und so fahre Er fort, wenn du nicht Oberster des Heeres vor mir für alle Tage wirst an Joabs Stelle.

And say to Amasa, ‘Aren’t you my flesh and blood? May God punish me, and ever so severely, if from this time you are not the commander of my army in place of Joab!’”

14 Und er neigte das Herz aller Männer Judahs wie eines Mannes, und sie sandten zu dem Könige: Kehre zurück, du und alle deine Knechte.

So he swayed the hearts of all the men of Judah as though they were one man, and they sent word to the king: “Return, you and all your servants.”

15 Und der König kehrte zurück; und er kam an den Jordan, und Judah war nach Gilgal gekommen, dem König entgegenzugehen und den König über den Jordan herüberzuführen.

So the king returned, and when he arrived at the Jordan, the men of Judah came to Gilgal to meet him and escort him across the Jordan.

16 Und Schimei, der Sohn Geras, der Benjaminiter, der von Bachurim war, eilte und ging mit den Männern Judahs hinab, dem König David entgegen.

Then Shimei son of Gera, a Benjamite from Bahurim, hurried down with the men of Judah to meet King David,

17 Und tausend Mann von Benjamin waren mit ihm; und Ziba, der Junge des Hauses Saul, mit seinen fünfzehn Söhnen und seinen zwanzig Knechten mit ihm, und fuhren über den Jordan vor dem König.

along with a thousand men of Benjamin, as well as Ziba the steward of the house of Saul and his fifteen sons and twenty servants. They rushed down to the Jordan before the king

18 Und die Fähre ging hinüber, das Haus des Königs herüberzubringen, und zu tun, was gut in seinen Augen war. Und Schimei, der Sohn Geras, fiel vor dem König nieder, da er über den Jordan übersetzte,

and crossed at the ford to carry over the king’s household and to do what was good in his sight. When Shimei son of Gera crossed the Jordan, he fell down before the king

19 Und sprach zum König: Mein Herr rechne mir nicht an die Missetat und gedenke nicht dessen, was dein Knecht Verkehrtes getan an dem Tage, da mein Herr, der König, aus Jerusalem auszog, und der König nehme es nicht zu Herzen.

and said, “My lord, do not hold me guilty, and do not remember your servant’s wrongdoing on the day my lord the king left Jerusalem. May the king not take it to heart.

20 Denn dein Knecht weiß, daß ich gesündigt habe und siehe, ich bin heute gekommen, der erste vom ganzen Hause Joseph, der meinem Herrn, dem König, entgegen, herabkommt.

For your servant knows that I have sinned, so here I am today as the first of all the house of Joseph to come down to meet my lord the king.”

21 Und Abischai, der Sohn Zerujahs antwortete und sprach: Soll dafür Schimei nicht sterben, daß er dem Gesalbten Jehovahs geflucht hat?

But Abishai son of Zeruiah said, “Shouldn’t Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the LORD’s anointed?”

22 Und David sprach: Was habe ich mit euch, Söhne Zerujahs, daß ihr mir heute zum Widersacher werdet? Sollte heute ein Mann in Israel sterben? Weiß ich nicht, daß ich heute über Israel König bin worden?

And David replied, “Sons of Zeruiah, what have I to do with you, that you should be my adversaries today? Should any man be put to death in Israel today? Am I not indeed aware that today I am king over Israel?”

23 Und der König sprach zu Schimei: Du sollst nicht sterben; und der König schwur ihm.

So the king said to Shimei, “You shall not die.” And the king swore an oath to him.

24 Und Mephiboscheth, Sauls Sohn kam herab, dem Könige entgegen; und er hatte seine Füße nicht zurecht gemacht, noch seinen Bart zurecht gemacht, noch seine Kleider gewaschen, seit dem Tage, da der König weggegangen war, bis zu dem Tage, da er im Frieden kam.

Then Mephibosheth, Saul’s grandson, went down to meet the king. He had not cared for his feet or trimmed his mustache or washed his clothes from the day the king had left until the day he returned safely.

25 Und es geschah, als er nach Jerusalem kam, dem König entgegen, da sprach der König zu ihm: Warum bist du, Mephiboscheth, nicht mit mir gegangen?

And he came from Jerusalem to meet the king, who asked him, “Mephibosheth, why did you not go with me?”

26 Und er sprach: Mein Herr König, mein Knecht hat mich betrogen, denn dein Knecht sprach: Ich will mir den Esel satteln und auf ihm reiten und mit dem König ziehen, denn dein Knecht ist lahm.

“My lord the king,” he replied, “because I am lame, I said, ‘I will have my donkey saddled so that I may ride on it and go with the king.’ But my servant Ziba deceived me,

27 Da verleumdete er deinen Knecht bei meinem Herrn, dem König. Aber mein Herr, der König, ist wie ein Engel Gottes. So tue denn, was gut in deinen Augen ist.

and he has slandered your servant to my lord the king. Yet my lord the king is like the angel of God, so do what is good in your eyes.

28 Denn das ganze Haus meines Vaters waren ja Männer des Todes meinem Herrn, dem König, und du hattest deinen Knecht unter die, so an deinem Tische essen, gesetzt, und was habe ich nun weiter für Gerechtigkeit und weiter zu schreien an den König?

For all the house of my grandfather deserves death from my lord the king, yet you have set your servant among those who eat at your table. What further right, then, do I have to keep appealing to the king?”

29 Und der König sprach zu ihm: Was redest du noch deine Worte? Ich habe es gesagt: Du und Ziba, ihr sollet das Feld teilen.

The king replied, “Why say any more? I hereby declare that you and Ziba are to divide the land.”

30 Und Mephiboscheth sprach zu dem König: Mag er auch das ganze nehmen, nach- dem mein Herr, der König, im Frieden nach seinem Haus gekommen ist.

And Mephibosheth said to the king, “Instead, since my lord the king has safely come to his own house, let Ziba take it all!”

31 Und Barsillai, der Gileaditer, war aus Rogelim herabgekommen, und setzte mit dem König über den Jordan, um ihn über den Jordan zu geleiten.

Now Barzillai the Gileadite had come down from Rogelim to cross the Jordan with the king and send him on his way from there.

32 Und Barsillai war sehr alt, achtzig Jahre alt, und hatte den König während seines Wohnens in Machanajim versorgt, denn er war ein sehr großer Mann.

Barzillai was quite old, eighty years of age, and since he was a very wealthy man, he had provided for the king while he stayed in Mahanaim.

33 Und der König sprach zu Barsillai: Ziehe du mit mir hinüber, und ich versorge dich bei mir in Jerusalem.

The king said to Barzillai, “Cross over with me, and I will provide for you at my side in Jerusalem.”

34 Und Barsillai sprach zum König: Was sind die Tage der Jahre meines Lebens, daß ich mit dem Könige hinauf nach Jerusalem zöge?

But Barzillai replied, “How many years of my life remain, that I should go up to Jerusalem with the king?

35 Achtzig Jahre bin ich heute alt, erkenne ich zwischen Gutem und Schlechtem? Schmeckt dein Knecht, was ich esse und was ich trinke? kann ich noch hören auf die Stimme der Sänger und Sängerinnen? und warum sollte dein Knecht noch meinem Herrn, dem König, zur Last sein?

I am now eighty years old. Can I discern what is good and what is not? Can your servant taste what he eats or drinks? Can I still hear the voice of singing men and women? Why should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king?

36 Noch ein wenig will dein Knecht mit dem König über den Jordan setzen, und warum sollte der König mir mit solcher Vergeltung vergelten?

Your servant could go with the king only a short distance past the Jordan; why should the king repay me with such a reward?

37 Laß deinen Knecht doch zurückkehren, daß ich in meiner Stadt, beim Grabe meines Vaters und meiner Mutter sterbe. Aber siehe, da ist dein Knecht Chimham, der mag mit meinem Herrn, dem König, hinüberziehen, und tue ihm, was gut in deinen Augen ist.

Please let your servant return, that I may die in my own city near the tomb of my father and mother. But here is your servant Chimham. Let him cross over with my lord the king, and do for him what is good in your sight.”

38 Und der König sprach: Chimham soll mit mir hinüberziehen, und ich will ihm tun, was gut in deinen Augen ist, und alles, was du von mir erwählst, will ich dir tun.

The king replied, “Chimham will cross over with me, and I will do for him what seems good in your sight, and I will do for you whatever you desire of me.”

39 Und alles Volk zog über den Jordan hinüber, und der König zog hinüber; und der König küßte Barsillai und segnete ihn, und er kehrte zurück an seinen Ort.

So all the people crossed the Jordan, and then the king crossed over. The king kissed Barzillai and blessed him, and Barzillai returned home.

40 Und der König zog hinüber nach Gilgal, und Chimham zog mit ihm hinüber, und alles Volk Judahs brachte den König hinüber, und auch die Hälfte vom Volke Israels.

Then the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham crossed over with him. All the troops of Judah and half the troops of Israel escorted the king.

41 Und siehe, alle Männer Israels kamen zum König, und sie sprachen zum König: Warum haben dich unsere Brüder, die Männer von Judah gestohlen, und den König und sein Haus und alle Männer Davids mit ihm über den Jordan herübergebracht?

Soon all the men of Israel came to the king and asked, “Why did our brothers, the men of Judah, take you away secretly and bring the king and his household across the Jordan, together with all of David’s men?”

42 Und alle Männer Judahs antworteten den Männern Israels: Weil der König uns nahe ist. Und warum entbrennt ihr uns darob? Haben wir etwa vom König gegessen oder hat er uns Ehrengaben gegeben?

And all the men of Judah replied to the men of Israel, “We did this because the king is our relative. Why does this anger you? Have we ever eaten at the king’s expense or received anything for ourselves?”

43 Und die Männer Israels antworteten den Männern Judahs und sprachen: Zehn Teile am Könige gehören mir, und auch an David habe ich mehr als du, und warum hast du mich gering geachtet und war mein Wort nicht das erste? Mir kommt es zu, meinen König zurückzubringen. Aber die Worte der Männer Judahs waren härter, denn die Worte der Männer Israels.

“We have ten shares in the king,” answered the men of Israel, “so we have more claim to David than you. Why then do you despise us? Were we not the first to speak of restoring our king?” But the men of Judah pressed even harder than the men of Israel.
