1 Samuel 8
1 Und es geschah, da Samuel alt war, da setzte er seine Söhne zu Richtern für Israel.
When Samuel became old, he appointed his two sons, Joel and Abijah, to lead/rule the people of Israel.
2 Und der Name seines erstgeborenen Sohnes war Joel und der Name seines zweiten Abijah; sie richteten in Beerscheba.
They judged people’s disputes/cases in Beersheba [town].
3 Und seine Söhne wandelten nicht in seinem Wege, sondern neigten sich dem Gewinn nach und nahmen Geschenke an und beugten das Recht.
But they were not like their father. They wanted only to get a lot of money. They accepted bribes, and they did not make honest decisions about people’s disputes/cases.
4 Und alle Ältesten Israels taten sich zusammen und kamen zu Samuel nach Ramah.
Finally, the Israeli leaders met at Ramah [town to discuss the matter] with Samuel.
5 Und sprachen zu ihm: Siehe, du bist alt geworden, und deine Söhne wandeln nicht in deinen Wegen; nun setze du uns einen König, daß er uns richte, wie alle Völkerschaften.
They said to him, “Listen! You are now old, and your sons are not like you. Appoint a king to rule over us, like the kings that other countries have!”
6 Und dieses Wort war böse in den Augen Samuels, als sie sagten: Gib uns einen König, daß er uns richte! Und Samuel betete zu Jehovah.
Samuel was very unhappy with them for requesting that, so he prayed to Yahweh about it.
7 Und Jehovah sprach zu Samuel: Höre auf die Stimme des Volkes in allem, was sie zu dir sagen; denn nicht dich haben sie verschmäht, sondern Mich haben sie verschmäht, daß Ich nicht über sie sollte König sein.
Yahweh replied, “Do what they have requested you to do. But ([do not think/the truth is not]) that you are the one whom they are really rejecting. I have been their king, and I am the one they are really rejecting.
8 Nach all den Taten, die sie getan von dem Tage an, da Ich sie aus Ägypten heraufgeführt, und bis auf diesen Tag, da sie Mich verließen und anderen Göttern dienten, also tun sie auch dir.
Ever since I brought them out of Egypt, they have rejected me, and they have worshiped other gods. And now they are also rejecting you in the same way.
9 Und nun höre auf ihre Stimme, nur daß du ihnen bezeugst und ihnen ansagst das Recht des Königs, der über sie regieren wird.
Do what they are asking you to do. But warn/tell them about how their kings will act toward them!”
10 Und Samuel sprach alle Worte Jehovahs zum Volk, das von ihm einen König sich erbat.
So Samuel told those people what Yahweh had said.
11 Und sagte: Dies wird das Recht des Königs sein, der über euch regieren wird: Eure Söhne wird er nehmen und sie auf seine Streitwagen setzen und zu seinen Reitern, und sie werden vor seinen Streitwagen herlaufen.
He said, “If a king rules over you, this is what he will do to you: He will force many of your sons to join the army. He will make [some of] them run in front of his chariots [to clear people out of his way].
12 Und er wird sie sich zu Obersten über tausend und zu Obersten über fünfzig setzen, und sie sein Ackerfeld pflügen und seine Ernte einernten und seine Kriegsgeräte und Geräte für seine Streitwagen machen lassen.
[Some of] them will be commanders of his soldiers, but others will work for him like slaves. He will force some of them to plow his fields and [then later] harvest his crops. He will force others to make his weapons and equipment for his chariots.
13 Und eure Töchter wird er nehmen zu Salbenmischerinnen und zu Köchinnen und zu Bäckerinnen.
The king will take [some of] your daughters [from you and force them] to make perfumes for him and cook food for him and bake [bread for him].
14 Und eure besten Felder und eure Weinberge und eure Ölgärten wird er nehmen und seinen Knechten geben.
He will take your best fields and vineyards and olive tree groves/orchards, and give them to his own officials.
15 Und eure Saaten und eure Weinberge wird er zehnten und an seine Verschnittenen und an seine Knechte geben.
He will take a tenth of your harvests and distribute it among the officers and servants [who work in] his [palace].
16 Und eure besten Knechte und eure Dienstmägde und eure Jünglinge und eure Esel wird er nehmen und damit sein Werk tun.
He will take from you your male and female servants, your best cattle and donkeys, and force them to work for him.
17 Euer Kleinvieh wird er zehnten, und ihr werdet seine Knechte sein.
He will take one tenth of your sheep and goats. And you will become his slaves!
18 Und ihr werdet an selbigem Tage schreien wegen eures Königs, den ihr euch erwählt, aber Jehovah wird euch nicht antworten an selbigem Tag.
When that time comes, you will complain loudly to the king, the king that you yourselves have chosen, but Yahweh will not (pay attention to/help) you.”
19 Aber das Volk weigerte sich, auf die Stimme Samuels zu hören, und sie sprachen: Nein, ein König soll über uns sein;
But the people refused to pay attention to what Samuel said. They said, “We do not [care what you say]! We want a king!
20 Auf daß auch wir seien wie alle Völkerschaften, und uns richte unser König, und vor uns ausziehe und unseren Streit streite.
We want to be like the other nations. We want a king to rule us and to lead our soldiers when they go to fight.”
21 Und Samuel hörte alle Worte des Volkes und redete sie vor den Ohren Jehovahs.
When Samuel told Yahweh what the people had said,
22 Und Jehovah sprach zu Samuel: Höre auf ihre Stimme, und laß einen König regieren über sie. Und Samuel sprach zu den Männern Israels: Gehet hin, jeder Mann in seine Stadt.
Yahweh replied, “Do what they are telling you to do. Give them a king!” [So Samuel agreed], and then he sent the people home.
