1 Samuel 4

1 Und Israel zog aus, den Philistern entgegen, zum Streit, und lagerte bei Ebeneser; und die Philister lagerten sich in Aphek.

And the word of Samuel is to all Israel, and Israel goeth out to meet the Philistines for battle, and they encamp by Eben-Ezer, and the Philistines have encamped in Aphek,

2 Und die Philister stellten sich auf, und der Streit breitete sich aus, und Israel ward vor den Philistern geschlagen, und sie erschlugen ihrer in der Schlachtreihe auf dem Felde bei viertausend Mann.

and the Philistines set themselves in array to meet Israel, and the battle spreadeth itself, and Israel is smitten before the Philistines, and they smite among the ranks in the field about four thousand men.

3 Und das Volk kam in das Lager und die Ältesten Israels sprachen: Warum hat uns Jehovah heute vor den Philistern geschlagen? Lasset uns die Bundeslade Jehovahs von Schiloh zu uns holen, daß sie in unsere Mitte komme und uns rette von der Faust unserer Feinde.

And the people cometh in unto the camp, and the elders of Israel say, 'Why hath Jehovah smitten us to-day before the Philistines? we take unto us from Shiloh the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, and it cometh into our midst, and He doth save us out of the hand of our enemies.'

4 Und das Volk sandte gen Schiloh, und sie trugen von da die Bundeslade des Jehovah der Heerscharen her, Der über den Cheruben sitzt; und es waren allda Elis zwei Söhne bei der Bundeslade Gottes, Chophni und Pinechas.

And the people sendeth to Shiloh, and they take up thence the ark of the covenant of Jehovah of Hosts, inhabiting the cherubs, and there [are] two sons of Eli, with the ark of the covenant of God, Hophni and Phinehas.

5 Und es geschah, als die Bundeslade Jehovahs in das Lager kam, erhob ganz Israel ein großes Feldgeschrei, so daß die Erde dröhnte.

And it cometh to pass, at the coming in of the ark of the covenant of Jehovah unto the camp, that all Israel shout — a great shout — and the earth is moved.

6 Und die Philister hörten die Stimme des Feldgeschreis und sprachen: Was soll die Stimme solch großen Feldgeschreis im Lager der Hebräer? Und sie erfuhren, daß die Lade Jehovahs in das Lager gekommen sei.

And the Philistines hear the noise of the shouting, and say, 'What [is] the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews?' and they perceive that the ark of Jehovah hath come in unto the camp.

7 Und die Philister fürchteten sich, denn sie sprachen: Gott ist zum Lager gekommen, und sie sagten: Wehe uns! So etwas war nicht gestern und ehegestern.

And the Philistines are afraid, for they said, 'God hath come in unto the camp;' and they say, 'Woe to us, for there hath not been like this heretofore.

8 Wehe uns, wer wird uns erretten von der Hand dieser gewaltigen Götter; das sind die Götter, die Ägypten mit allerlei Plagen in der Wüste geschlagen.

Woe to us, who doth deliver us out of the hand of these honourable gods? these [are] the gods who are smiting the Egyptians with every plague in the wilderness.

9 Seid wacker und seid Männer, ihr Philister, daß ihr nicht den Hebräern dient, wie sie euch gedient; seid Männer und streitet.

Strengthen yourselves, and become men, O Philistines, lest ye do service to Hebrews, as they have done to you — then ye have become men, and have fought.'

10 Und die Philister stritten, und Israel ward geschlagen und sie flohen, jeder Mann nach seinem Zelt, und es war eine sehr große Schlacht; und von Israel fielen dreißigtausend vom Fußvolk.

And the Philistines fight, and Israel is smitten, and they flee each to his tents, and the blow is very great, and there fall of Israel thirty thousand footmen;

11 Und die Lade Gottes ward genommen, und die zwei Söhne Elis, Chophni und Pinechas, starben.

and the ark of God hath been taken, and the two sons of Eli have died, Hophni and Phinehas.

12 Und ein Mann von Benjamin lief aus der Schlachtreihe und kam an selbigem Tage gen Schiloh, und seine Obergewänder waren zerrissen und Erde auf sein Haupt gestreut.

And a man of Benjamin runneth out of the ranks, and cometh into Shiloh, on that day, and his long robes [are] rent, and earth on his head;

13 Und er kam, und siehe, Eli saß auf dem Stuhle an der Seite des Weges und spähte; denn sein Herz erzitterte ob der Lade Gottes. Und der Mann kam hinein, es in der Stadt anzusagen, und die ganze Stadt schrie.

and he cometh in, and lo, Eli is sitting on the throne by the side of the way, watching, for his heart hath been trembling for the ark of God, and the man hath come in to declare [it] in the city, and all the city crieth out.

14 Und Eli hörte die Stimme des Geschreis und er sprach: Was soll die Stimme dieses Getümmels? Und der Mann eilte herzu und kam und sagte es Eli an.

And Eli heareth the noise of the cry, and saith, 'What — the noise of this tumult!' And the man hasted, and cometh in, and declareth to Eli.

15 Und Eli war ein Mann von achtundneunzig Jahren, und seine Augen waren starr, daß er nicht mehr sehen konnte.

And Eli is a son of ninety and eight years, and his eyes have stood, and he hath not been able to see.

16 Und der Mann sprach zu Eli: Ich bin aus der Schlachtreihe gekommen, und ich bin heute aus der Schlachtreihe geflohen. Und er sprach: Wie war die Sache, mein Sohn?

And the man saith unto Eli, 'I [am] he who hath come out of the ranks, and I out of the ranks have fled to-day;' and he saith, 'What hath been the matter, my son?'

17 Und es antwortete, der die Kunde brachte, und sprach: Israel ist vor den Philistern geflohen, und es war ein großes Schlachten unter dem Volke, und auch deine beiden Söhne, Chophni und Pinechas, sind tot, und die Lade Gottes ist genommen.

And he who is bearing tidings answereth and saith, 'Israel hath fled before the Philistines, and also a great slaughter hath been among the people, and also thy two sons have died — Hophni and Phinehas — and the ark of God hath been captured.'

18 Und es geschah, als er die Lade Gottes erwähnte, da fiel er rückwärts vom Stuhle an der Seite des Tores, und brach das Genick und starb; denn der Mann war alt und schwer. Und er hatte Israel vierzig Jahre gerichtet.

And it cometh to pass, at his mentioning the ark of God, that he falleth from off the throne backward, by the side of the gate, and his neck is broken, and he dieth, for the man [is] old and heavy, and he hath judged Israel forty years.

19 Und seine Schwiegertochter, des Pinechas Weib, war schwanger und am Gebären, und da sie das Gerücht hörte, daß die Lade Gottes genommen, und ihr Schwäher und ihr Mann tot wären, krümmte sie sich und gebar; denn Wehen hatten sich wider sie gekehrt.

And his daughter-in-law, wife of Phinehas, [is] pregnant, about to bear, and she heareth the report of the taking of the ark of God, that her father-in-law and her husband have died, and she boweth, and beareth, for her pains have turned upon her.

20 Und zur Zeit ihres Sterbens sprachen zu ihr, die um sie standen: Fürchte dich nicht, denn du hast einen Sohn geboren. Aber sie antwortete nicht und nahm es sich nicht zu Herzen.

And at the time of her death, when the women who are standing by her say, 'Fear not, for a son thou hast borne,' she hath not answered, nor set her heart [to it];

21 Und sie nannte den Jungen I-Chabod und sprach: Die Herrlichkeit ist weggeführt von Israel, weil die Lade Gottes genommen war; und ihres Schwähers und ihres Mannes wegen.

and she calleth the youth I-Chabod, saying, 'Honour hath removed from Israel,' because of the taking of the ark of God, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

22 Und sie sprach: Die Herrlichkeit ist von Israel weggeführt; denn die Lade Gottes ist genommen.

And she saith, 'Honour hath removed from Israel, for the ark of God hath been taken.'
