1 Samuel 11

1 Und Nachasch, der Ammoniter, zog herauf und lagerte wider Jabesch-Gilead. Und alle Männer zu Jabesch sprachen zu Nachasch: Schließ mit uns einen Bund, so wollen wir dir dienen.

And Nahash the Ammonite comes up, and encamps against Jabesh-Gilead, and all the men of Jabesh say to Nahash, “Make a covenant with us, and we serve you.”

2 Und Nachasch, der Ammoniter, sprach zu ihnen: So will ich ihn mit euch schließen, daß ich euch allen das rechte Auge aussteche und lege es auf ganz Israel zur Schmach.

And Nahash the Ammonite says to them, “For this I cut [a covenant] with you, in picking out every right eye of yours—and I have set it [for] a reproach on all Israel.”

3 Und es sprachen zu ihm die Ältesten von Jabesch: Laß ab von uns sieben Tage, daß wir Boten in all die Grenze von Israel senden, und wenn uns niemand hilft, so kommen wir zu dir hinaus.

And [the] elderly of Jabesh say to him, “Leave us alone [for] seven days, and we send messengers into all the border of Israel: and if there is none saving us—then we have come out to you.”

4 Und die Boten kamen nach Gibeath-Saul und redeten die Worte vor den Ohren des Volkes, und alles Volk hob auf seine Stimme und weinte.

And the messengers come to Gibeah of Saul, and speak the words in the ears of the people, and all the people lift up their voice and weep;

5 Und siehe, Saul kam hinter den Rindern vom Feld; und Saul sprach: Was ist dem Volk, daß sie weinen? Und sie erzählten ihm die Worte der Männer von Jabesch.

and behold, Saul has come out of the field after the herd, and Saul says, “What [is that] to the people, that they weep?” And they recount the words of the men of Jabesh to him.

6 Und der Geist Gottes geriet über Saul, als er diese Worte hörte, und sein Zorn entbrannte sehr.

And the Spirit of God prospers over Saul, in his hearing these words, and his anger burns greatly,

7 Und er nahm ein paar Rinder und zerstückte sie und sandte sie in all die Grenze Israels durch die Hand der Boten und ließ sagen: Wer nicht hinter Saul und hinter Samuel auszieht, dessen Rindern soll also geschehen. Und es fiel der Schauer Jehovahs auf das Volk und sie zogen aus wie ein Mann.

and he takes a couple of oxen, and cuts them in pieces, and sends [them] through all the border of Israel, by the hand of the messengers, saying, “He who is not coming out after Saul and after Samuel—thus it is done to his oxen”; and the fear of YHWH falls on the people, and they come out as one man.

8 Und er musterte sie in Besek, und es waren der Söhne Israel dreihunderttausend und der Männer Judah dreißigtausend.

And he inspects them in Bezek, and the sons of Israel are three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

9 Und den Boten, die gekommen waren, sagten sie: So sprechet zu den Männern zu Jabesch-Gilead: Morgen soll euch Hilfe werden, wenn die Sonne heiß wird. Und die Boten kamen und sagten es den Männern von Jabesch an, und sie wurden froh.

And they say to the messengers who are coming, “Thus you say to the men of Jabesh-Gilead: Tomorrow you have safety—by the heat of the sun”; and the messengers come and declare [it] to the men of Jabesh, and they rejoice;

10 Und die Männer von Jabesch sprachen: Morgen kommen wir heraus zu euch, und tuet ihr uns nach allem, das gut ist in euren Augen.

and the men of Jabesh say [to the Ammonites], “Tomorrow we come out to you, and you have done to us according to all that [is] good in your eyes.”

11 Und es geschah am morgenden Tage, daß Saul das Volk in drei Haufen stellte und sie kamen in die Mitte des Lagers um die Morgenwache und schlugen Ammon, bis der Tag heiß ward. Und der Überrest zerstreute sich so, daß ihrer nicht zwei zusammenblieben.

And it comes to pass, on the next day, that Saul puts the people in three detachments, and they come into the midst of the camp in the morning-watch, and strike Ammon until the heat of the day; and it comes to pass that those left are scattered, and there have not been left two of them together.

12 Und das Volk sprach zu Samuel: Wer war der, so gesprochen hat: Sollte Saul über uns König sein? Gebt die Männer her, daß wir sie töten.

And the people say to Samuel, “Who is he that says, Saul reigns over us? Give up the men, and we put them to death.”

13 Saul aber sprach: An diesem Tage soll kein Mann getötet werden; denn heute hat Jehovah Israel Heil gebracht.

And Saul says, “There is no man put to death on this day, for today YHWH has worked salvation in Israel.”

14 Und Samuel sprach zum Volke: Kommt, laßt uns nach Gilgal ziehen, daß wir daselbst das Königtum erneuern.

And Samuel says to the people, “Come and we go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there”;

15 Und alles Volk zog nach Gilgal und machte dort Saul zum König vor Jehovah in Gilgal und opferte dort Opfer, Dankopfer vor Jehovah. Und Saul ward fröhlich daselbst, und alle Männer Israels gar sehr.

and all the people go to Gilgal, and cause Saul to reign there before YHWH in Gilgal, and sacrifice sacrifices of peace-offerings there before YHWH, and Saul rejoices there—and all the men of Israel—very greatly.
