Roemers 13
1 Jedermann sei den obrigkeitlichen Gewalten untertan; denn es gibt keine Obrigkeit, die nicht von Gott wäre; die vorhandenen aber sind von Gott verordnet.
Every one should be in the higher authorities; for there is no authority apart from God. The authorities that now exist have been appointed by God.
2 Wer sich also der Obrigkeit widersetzt, der widerstrebt der Ordnung Gottes; die aber widerstreben, ziehen sich selbst die Verurteilung zu.
Therefore the man who rebels against authority is opposing the divine ordinances; and those who withstand will bring judgment on themselves.
3 Denn die Herrscher sind nicht wegen guten Werken zu fürchten, sondern wegen bösen! Willst du also die Obrigkeit nicht fürchten, so tue das Gute, dann wirst du Lob von ihr empfangen!
For rulers are no terror to good deeds, but to evil. Would you be fearless of the ruler’s authority? Do what is good, and you will have his praise.
4 Denn sie ist Gottes Dienerin, zu deinem Besten. Tust du aber Böses, so fürchte dich! Denn sie trägt das Schwert nicht umsonst; Gottes Dienerin ist sie, eine Rächerin zur Strafe an dem, der das Böse tut.
For the ruler is God’s minister appointed for your good. But if you are a wrong-doer, be afraid; he does not carry the sword to no purpose; he is God’s servant, appointed to vengeance upon the guilty.
5 Darum ist es notwendig, untertan zu sein, nicht allein um der Strafe, sondern auch um des Gewissens willen.
Wherefore you must needs be in subjection, not only because of fear, but also for conscience sake.
6 Deshalb zahlet ihr ja auch Steuern; denn sie sind Gottes Diener, die eben dazu bestellt sind.
This too, is the reason why you pay taxes; because the authorities are ministers of God’s service, attending continually upon this very thing.
7 So gebet nun jedermann, was ihr schuldig seid: Steuer, dem die Steuer, Zoll, dem der Zoll, Furcht, dem die Furcht, Ehre, dem die Ehre gebührt.
Render to all their dues; taxes to whom taxes, customs to whom customs, respect to whom respect, and homage to whom homage is due.
8 Seid niemand etwas schuldig, als daß ihr einander liebet; denn wer den andern liebt, hat das Gesetz erfüllt.
Never owe any one anything save the debt of brotherly love; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the Law.
9 Denn die [Forderung]: «Du sollst nicht ehebrechen, du sollst nicht töten, du sollst nicht stehlen, laß dich nicht gelüsten» (und welches andere Gebot noch sei), wird zusammengefaßt in diesem Wort: «Du sollst deinen Nächsten lieben wie dich selbst!»
For the Law which says, Thou shalt not commit adultery, thou shalt do no murder, thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not bear false witness, thou shalt not covet, and whatever other commandment there be - is all summed up in this one saying, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
10 Die Liebe tut dem Nächsten nichts Böses; so ist nun die Liebe des Gesetzes Erfüllung.
Love never wrongs his neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilment of the Law.
11 Und dieses [sollen wir tun] als solche, die die Zeit verstehen, daß nämlich die Stunde schon da ist, wo wir vom Schlafe aufwachen sollten; denn jetzt ist unser Heil näher, als da wir gläubig wurden;
Carry out these injunctions because you know the crisis that we are in, that now it is high time for you to awake out of sleep; for now is our salvation nearer than when we first believed.
12 die Nacht ist vorgerückt, der Tag aber nahe. So lasset uns nun ablegen die Werke der Finsternis und anziehen die Waffen des Lichts;
The night is far spent; The day is at hand. Let is therefore take off the deeds of darkness, Let us put on the armor of light.
13 laßt uns anständig wandeln als am Tage, nicht in Schmausereien und Schlemmereien, nicht in Unzucht und Ausschweifungen, nicht in Hader und Neid;
Let us live honestly, as in the day, Not in reveling and drunkenness, Not in lust and licentiousness, Not is strife and jealousy;
14 sondern ziehet den Herrn Jesus Christus an und pfleget das Fleisch nicht bis zur Erregung von Begierden!
But clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, And make no provisions for your earthly nature And the gratification of its lusts.
