Psalm 124

1 Ein Wallfahrtslied. Von David. Wenn der HERR nicht für uns gewesen wäre (so sage Israel),

“A song of the degrees by David.” If it had not been the Lord who was for us, so should Israel say;

2 wenn der HERR nicht für uns gewesen wäre, als die Menschen wider uns auftraten,

If it had not been the Lord who was for us, when men rose up against us:

3 so hätten sie uns lebendig verschlungen, als ihr Zorn gegen uns entbrannte;

Then would they have swallowed us up alive, when their wrath was kindled against us;

4 dann hätten die Wasser uns überschwemmt, ein Strom wäre über unsre Seele gegangen;

Then would the waters have overwhelmed us, the stream would have passed over our soul;

5 dann hätten die stolzen Wasser unsre Seele überflutet!

Then would have passed over our soul the presumptuous waters.

6 Gepriesen sei der HERR, der uns ihren Zähnen nicht zur Beute gab!

Blessed be the Lord, who hath not given us up as a prey to their teeth.

7 Unsre Seele ist entronnen wie ein Vögelein der Schlinge des Vogelstellers; die Schlinge ist zerrissen, und wir sind entronnen!

Our soul is escaped like a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.

8 Unsre Hilfe steht im Namen des HERRN, der Himmel und Erde gemacht hat.

Our help is in the name of the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.
