1 Rühme dich nicht des morgenden Tages; denn du weißt nicht, was ein einziger Tag bringen mag!
Boast not thyself of to-morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.
2 Ein anderer soll dich rühmen, nicht dein eigener Mund; ein Fremder und nicht deine eigenen Lippen!
Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.
3 Ein Stein ist schwer und der Sand eine Last; aber der Ärger, den ein Tor verursacht, ist schwerer als beides.
A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool's vexation is heavier than they both.
4 Grausam ist der Zorn und überwallend der Grimm; aber wer kann vor der Eifersucht bestehen?
Wrath is cruel, and anger is overwhelming; but who is able to stand before jealousy?
5 Offenbarende Zurechtweisung ist besser als verheimlichende Liebe.
Better is open rebuke than love that is hidden.
6 Treugemeint sind die Schläge des Freundes, aber reichlich die Küsse des Hassers.
Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are importunate.
7 Eine übersättigte Seele zertritt Honigseim; einer hungrigen Seele aber ist alles Bittere süß.
The full soul loatheth a honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.
8 Wie ein Vogel, der aus seinem Neste flieht, so ist ein Mann, der aus seiner Heimat entflieht.
As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that wandereth from his place.
9 Öl und Räucherwerk erfreuen das Herz; so süß ist die Rede des Freundes, der Rat seiner Seele.
Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart; so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.
10 Verlaß deinen Freund und den Freund deines Vaters nicht; aber in das Haus deines Bruders begib dich nicht am Tage deiner Not; ein Nachbar in der Nähe ist besser als ein Bruder in der Ferne.
Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity; better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.
11 Sei weise, mein Sohn, und erfreue mein Herz; so darf ich dem antworten, der mich schmäht.
My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him that taunteth me.
12 Ein Kluger sieht das Unglück und verbirgt sich; die Einfältigen aber tappen hinein und müssen es büßen.
A prudent man seeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the thoughtless pass on, and are punished.
13 Nimm sein Kleid; denn er hat sich für einen Fremden verbürgt, und statt einer Unbekannten pfände ihn aus!
Take his garment that is surety for a stranger; and hold him in pledge that is surety for an alien woman.
14 Wenn einer seinen Nächsten am frühen Morgen mit lauter Stimme segnet, so wird ihm das als ein Fluch angerechnet.
He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him.
15 Eine rinnende Dachtraufe an einem Regentag und ein zänkisches Weib sind gleich;
A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike;
16 wer sie aufhalten will, der hält Wind auf und will Öl zurückdrängen mit seiner Rechten.
He that would hide her hideth the wind, and the ointment of his right hand betrayeth itself.
17 Eisen schärft Eisen, ebenso schärft ein Mann den andern.
Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
18 Wer des Feigenbaums wartet, genießt dessen Frucht, und wer seinem Herrn aufmerksam dient, wird geehrt.
Whoso keepeth the fig-tree shall eat the fruit thereof; and he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured.
19 Wie das Wasser das Angesicht, so spiegelt ein Menschenherz das andere wieder.
As in water face answereth to face, so the heart of man to man.
20 Totenreich und Abgrund kriegen nie genug; so sind auch die Augen der Menschen unersättlich. (Sheol h7585)
The nether-world and Destruction are never satiated; so the eyes of man are never satiated. (Sheol h7585)
21 Der Tiegel ist für das Silber und der Ofen für das Gold; und der Mensch [wird geprüft] durch des Lobredners Mund.
The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold, and a man is tried by his praise.
22 Wenn du den Narren im Mörser mit der Keule zu Grütze zerstießest, so wiche doch seine Narrheit nicht von ihm.
Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar with a pestle among groats, yet will not his foolishness depart from him.
23 Habe acht auf das Aussehen deiner Schafe und nimm dich deiner Herde an!
Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds;
24 Denn kein Reichtum währt ewig; oder bleibt eine Krone von Geschlecht zu Geschlecht?
For riches are not for ever; and doth the crown endure unto all generations?
25 Das Heu wird weggeführt, dann erscheint junges Grün, und man sammelt die Kräuter auf den Bergen.
When the hay is mown, and the tender grass showeth itself, and the herbs of the mountains are gathered in;
26 Die Lämmer kleiden dich, und die Böcke zahlen dir den Acker.
The lambs will be for thy clothing, and the goats the price for a field.
27 Du hast genug Ziegenmilch zu deiner Nahrung, zur Ernährung deines Hauses und zum Unterhalt für deine Mägde.
And there will be goats' milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household; and maintenance for thy maidens.
