Nehemia 9

1 Aber am vierundzwanzigsten Tage dieses Monats kamen die Kinder Israel zusammen unter Fasten, in Sacktuch [gekleidet] und mit Erde auf ihnen.

And in the twenty and fourth day of this month have the sons of Israel been gathered, with fasting, and with sackcloth, and earth upon them;

2 Und es sonderten sich die Nachkommen Israels von allen Kindern der Fremden ab und traten hin und bekannten ihre Sünden und die Missetaten ihrer Väter.

and the seed of Israel are separated from all sons of a stranger, and stand and confess concerning their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers,

3 Und sie standen auf an ihrem Platze, und man las im Gesetzbuche des HERRN, ihres Gottes, während eines Viertels des Tages: und sie bekannten [ihre Sünde] und beteten zu dem HERRN, ihrem Gott, während eines andern Viertels des Tages.

and rise up on their station, and read in the book of the law of Jehovah their God a fourth of the day, and a fourth they are confessing and bowing themselves to Jehovah their God.

4 Und auf der Erhöhung der Leviten standen Jesua, Banai, Kadmiel, Sebanja, Buni, Serebja, Bani und Kenani und schrieen laut zu dem HERRN, ihrem Gott.

And there stand up on the ascent, of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, Chenani, and they cry with a loud voice unto Jehovah their God.

5 Und die Leviten Jesua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hasabneja, Serebja, Hodija, Sebanja und Petachja sprachen: Stehet auf, lobet den HERRN, euren Gott, von Ewigkeit zu Ewigkeit! Und man lobe den Namen deiner Herrlichkeit, der über alle Danksagung und alles Lob erhaben ist!

And the Levites say, [even] Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, Pethahiah, 'Rise, bless Jehovah your God, from the age unto the age, and they bless the name of Thine honour that [is] exalted above all blessing and praise.

6 Du, HERR, bist der Einzige! Du hast den Himmel, aller Himmel Himmel samt ihrem ganzen Heere gemacht, die Erde und alles, was darauf ist, das Meer und alles, was darin ist! Du machst alles lebendig, und das himmlische Heer verehrt dich.

Thou [art] He, O Jehovah, Thyself — Thou hast made the heavens, the heavens of the heavens, and all their host, the earth and all that [are] on it, the seas and all that [are] in them, and Thou art keeping all of them alive, and the host of the heavens to Thee are bowing themselves.

7 Du, HERR, bist der Gott, der Abram erwählt und aus Ur in Chaldäa geführt und mit dem Namen Abraham benannt hat.

'Thou [art] He, O Jehovah God, who didst fix on Abraham, and didst bring him out from Ur of the Chaldeans, and didst make his name Abraham,

8 Und du hast sein Herz treu vor dir befunden und einen Bund mit ihm gemacht, seinem Samen das Land der Kanaaniter, Hetiter, Amoriter, Pheresiter, Jebusiter und Girgasiter zu geben; und du hast dein Wort gehalten, denn du bist gerecht.

and didst find his heart stedfast before Thee, so as to make with him the covenant, to give the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite, and the Girgashite, to give [it] to his seed. 'And Thou dost establish Thy words, for Thou [art] righteous,

9 Du hast das Elend unsrer Väter in Ägypten angesehen und ihr Schreien am Schilfmeer erhört;

and dost see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and their cry hast heard by the sea of Suph,

10 und hast Zeichen und Wunder getan am Pharao und allen seinen Knechten und an allem Volke seines Landes; denn du wußtest wohl, daß sie Übermut mit ihnen trieben, und du hast dir einen Namen gemacht, wie es heute der Fall ist.

and dost give signs and wonders on Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land, for Thou hast known that they have acted proudly against them, and Thou makest to Thee a name as [at] this day.

11 Du hast das Meer vor ihnen zerteilt, und sie gingen mitten durchs Meer auf dem Trockenen, aber ihre Verfolger hast du in die Tiefe geschleudert, wie einen Stein in mächtige Wasser.

And the sea Thou hast cleaved before them, and they pass over into the midst of the sea on the dry land, and their pursuers Thou hast cast into the depths, as a stone, into the strong waters.

12 Du hast sie bei Tage mit einer Wolkensäule und bei Nacht mit einer Feuersäule geleitet, um ihnen den Weg zu erleuchten, auf dem sie ziehen sollten.

And by a pillar of cloud Thou hast led them by day, and by a pillar of fire by night, to lighten to them the way in which they go.

13 Du bist auf den Berg Sinai herabgefahren und hast mit ihnen vom Himmel her geredet und ihnen richtige Ordnungen und wahrhaftige Gesetze und gute Gebote und Satzungen gegeben.

'And on mount Sinai Thou hast come down, even to speak with them from the heavens, and Thou dost give to them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commands.

14 Du hast ihnen deinen heiligen Sabbat kundgetan und ihnen Gebote, Satzungen und Gesetze geboten durch deinen Knecht Mose.

And Thy holy sabbath Thou hast made known to them, and commands, and statutes, and law, Thou hast commanded for them, by the hand of Moses Thy servant;

15 Brot vom Himmel hast du ihnen gegeben, als sie hungerten, und Wasser aus dem Felsen hast du für sie hervorgebracht, als sie dürsteten, und du hast ihnen befohlen, hineinzugehen und das Land einzunehmen, darüber du deine Hand erhoben hattest, es ihnen zu geben.

and bread from the heavens Thou hast given to them for their hunger, and water from a rock hast brought out to them for their thirst, and dost say to them to go in to possess the land that Thou hast lifted up Thy hand to give to them.

16 Aber sie und unsere Väter wurden übermütig und halsstarrig, so daß sie deinen Geboten nicht folgten;

'And they and our fathers have acted proudly, and harden their neck, and have not hearkened unto Thy commands,

17 und sie weigerten sich zu hören, und gedachten nicht an deine Wunder, die du an ihnen getan hattest, sondern wurden halsstarrig und warfen ein Haupt auf, um in ihrer Widerspenstigkeit in die Knechtschaft zurückzukehren. Aber du, o Gott der Vergebung, warst gnädig, barmherzig, langmütig und von großer Barmherzigkeit und verließest sie nicht.

yea, they refuse to hearken, and have not remembered Thy wonders that Thou hast done with them, and harden their neck and appoint a head, to turn back to their service, in their rebellion; and Thou [art] a God of pardons, gracious, and merciful, long-suffering, and abundant in kindness, and hast not forsaken them.

18 Ob sie gleich ein gegossenes Kalb machten und sprachen: Das ist dein Gott, der dich aus Ägypten geführt hat! und arge Lästerungen verübten,

'Also, when they have made to themselves a molten calf, and say, this [is] thy god that brought thee up out of Egypt, and do great despisings,

19 verließest du sie nach deiner großen Barmherzigkeit doch nicht in der Wüste; die Wolkensäule wich nicht von ihnen des Tages, um sie auf dem Wege zu führen, noch die Feuersäule des Nachts, um ihnen den Weg zu erleuchten, den sie ziehen sollten.

and Thou, in Thine abundant mercies, hast not forsaken them in the wilderness — the pillar of the cloud hath not turned aside from off them by day, to lead them in the way, and the pillar of the fire by night, to give light to them and the way in which they go.

20 Und du gabst ihnen deinen guten Geist, sie zu unterweisen; und dein Manna nahmst du nicht von ihrem Munde, und als sie dürsteten, gabst du ihnen Wasser.

'And Thy good Spirit Thou hast given, to cause them to act wisely; and Thy manna Thou hast not withheld from their mouth, and water Thou hast given to them for their thirst,

21 Vierzig Jahre lang versorgtest du sie in der Wüste, daß ihnen nichts mangelte; ihre Kleider veralteten nicht und ihre Füße schwollen nicht an.

and forty years Thou hast nourished them in a wilderness; they have not lacked; their garments have not worn out, and their feet have not swelled.

22 Du gabst ihnen Königreiche und Völker und teiltest ihnen das ganze Gebiet aus, daß sie das Land Sihons einnahmen, das Land des Königs zu Hesbon und das Land Ogs, des Königs zu Basan.

'And Thou givest to them kingdoms, and peoples, and dost apportion them to the corner, and they possess the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.

23 Du machtest ihre Kinder zahlreich wie die Sterne am Himmel und brachtest sie in das Land, von dem du ihren Vätern verheißen hattest, daß sie hineinziehen und es einnehmen würden.

And their sons Thou hast multiplied as the stars of the heavens, and bringest them in unto the land that Thou hast said to their fathers to go in to possess.

24 Die Kinder zogen hinein und nahmen das Land ein. Und du demütigtest vor ihnen die Einwohner des Landes, die Kanaaniter, und gabst sie in ihre Hand, ebenso ihre Könige und die Völker im Lande, daß sie mit ihnen nach Belieben handelten.

'And the sons come in, and possess the land, and Thou humblest before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and givest them into their hand, and their kings, and the peoples of the land, to do with them according to their pleasure.

25 Und sie eroberten feste Städte und ein fettes Land und nahmen Häuser in Besitz, mit allerlei Gut gefüllt, ausgehauene Brunnen, Weinberge, Ölbäume und Obstbäume in Menge; und sie aßen und wurden satt und fett und ließen sich's wohl sein in deiner großen Güte.

And they capture fenced cities, and fat ground, and possess houses full of all good, digged-wells, vineyards, and olive-yards, and fruit-trees in abundance, and they eat, and are satisfied, and become fat, and delight themselves in Thy great goodness.

26 Aber sie wurden ungehorsam und widerstrebten dir und warfen deine Gebote hinter ihren Rücken und erwürgten die Propheten, die wider sie zeugten, um sie zu dir zurückzuführen, und verübten arge Lästerungen.

'And they are disobedient, and rebel against Thee, and cast Thy law behind their back, and Thy prophets they have slain, who testified against them, to bring them back unto Thee, and they do great despisings,

27 Darum gabst du sie in die Hand ihrer Feinde, die sie ängstigten. Doch zur Zeit ihrer Angst schrieen sie zu dir, und du erhörtest sie vom Himmel her und gabst ihnen nach deiner großen Barmherzigkeit Retter, die sie aus ihrer Feinde Hand erretteten.

and Thou givest them into the hand of their adversaries, and they distress them, and in the time of their distress they cry unto Thee, and Thou, from the heavens, dost hear, and, according to Thine abundant mercies, dost give to them saviours, and they save them out of the hand of their adversaries.

28 Wenn sie aber zur Ruhe kamen, taten sie wiederum Böses vor dir; alsdann überließest du sie der Hand ihrer Feinde; die herrschten über sie. Wenn sie dann wieder zu dir schrieen, erhörtest du sie vom Himmel her und errettetest sie oftmals nach deiner großen Barmherzigkeit.

'And when they have rest, they turn back to do evil before Thee, and Thou dost leave them in the hand of their enemies, and they rule over them; and they turn back, and call Thee, and Thou from the heavens dost hear, and dost deliver them, according to Thy mercies, many times,

29 Und du ließest ihnen bezeugen, daß sie zu deinem Gesetze zurückkehren sollten; aber sie waren übermütig und folgten deinen Geboten nicht, sondern sündigten gegen deine Rechte, durch die der Mensch, wenn er sie befolgt, leben wird, und kehrten dir widerspenstig den Nacken zu und folgten nicht.

and dost testify against them, to bring them back unto Thy law; and they — they have acted proudly, and have not hearkened to Thy commands, and against Thy judgments have sinned, — which man doth and hath lived in them — and they give a refractory shoulder, and their neck have hardened, and have not hearkened.

30 Du aber hattest viele Jahre lang Geduld mit ihnen und ließest gegen sie Zeugnis ablegen durch deinen Geist, vermittelst deiner Propheten; aber sie wollten nicht hören. Darum hast du sie in die Hand der Erdenvölker gegeben.

'And Thou drawest over them many years, and testifiest against them by Thy Spirit, by the hand of Thy prophets, and they have not given ear, and Thou dost give them into the hand of peoples of the lands,

31 Aber nach deiner großen Barmherzigkeit hast du sie nicht gänzlich vertilgt und sie nicht verlassen. Denn du bist ein gnädiger und barmherziger Gott!

and in Thine abundant mercies Thou hast not made them a consumption, nor hast forsaken them; for a God, gracious and merciful, [art] Thou.

32 Nun, unser Gott, du großer Gott, mächtig und furchtbar, der du den Bund und die Barmherzigkeit hältst, achte nicht gering all das Ungemach, das uns getroffen hat, uns, unsere Könige, unsere Fürsten, unsere Priester, unsere Propheten, unsere Väter und dein ganzes Volk, seit der Zeit der Könige von Assyrien bis auf diesen Tag.

'And now, O our God — God, the great, the mighty, and the fearful, keeping the covenant and the kindness — let not all the travail that hath found us be little before Thee, for our kings, for our heads, and for our priests, and for our prophets, and for our fathers, and for all Thy people, from the days of the kings of Asshur unto this day;

33 Du bist gerecht in allem, was über uns gekommen ist; denn du hast Treue bewiesen; wir aber sind gottlos gewesen.

and Thou [art] righteous concerning all that hath come upon us, for truth Thou hast done, and we have done wickedly;

34 Und unsere Könige, unsere Fürsten, unsere Priester und unsere Väter haben nicht nach deinem Gesetze gehandelt und haben nicht geachtet auf deine Gebote und auf deine Zeugnisse, die du ihnen hast bezeugen lassen.

and our kings, our heads, our priests, and our fathers, have not done Thy law, nor attended unto Thy commands, and to Thy testimonies, that Thou hast testified against them;

35 Sie haben dir nicht gedient in ihrem Königreich, trotz deiner großen Wohltat, die du ihnen erwiesen, und trotz dem weiten, fetten Lande, welches du ihnen gegeben hast, und sie haben sich von ihrem bösen Wesen nicht abgekehrt.

and they, in their kingdom, and in Thine abundant goodness, that Thou hast given to them, and in the land, the large and the fat, that Thou hast set before them, have not served Thee, nor turned back from their evil doings.

36 Siehe, wir sind heute Knechte; ja, in dem Lande, welches du unsern Vätern gegeben hast, um seine Früchte und Güter zu genießen, siehe, in dem sind wir Knechte;

'Lo, we — to-day — [are] servants, and the land that Thou hast given to our fathers, to eat its fruit and its good — lo, we [are] servants on it,

37 und sein Ertrag mehrt sich für die Könige, die du über uns gesetzt hast um unsrer Sünden willen, und sie herrschen über unsre Leiber und über unser Vieh nach ihrem Wohlgefallen, und wir sind in großer Not!

and its increase it is multiplying to the kings whom Thou hast set over us in our sins; and over our bodies they are ruling, and over our cattle, according to their pleasure, and we [are] in great distress.

38 Auf Grund alles dessen machen wir einen festen Bund und schreiben ihn nieder und lassen ihn durch unsre Fürsten, Leviten und Priester versiegeln!

And for all this we are making a stedfast covenant, and are writing, and over him who is sealed [are] our heads, our Levites, our priests.'
