Josua 24

1 Und Josua versammelte alle Stämme Israels zu Sichem und berief die Ältesten von Israel, die Häupter, Richter und Amtleute. Und als sie vor Gott getreten waren,

Joshua summoned all the tribes of Israel to Shechem. Then he called the elders, leaders, judges, and officials and they came and stood before the Tabernacle of God.

2 sprach Josua zum ganzen Volk: So spricht der HERR, der Gott Israels: Eure Väter, Terach, Abrahams und Nahors Vater, wohnten vor Zeiten jenseits des [Euphrat] Stromes und dienten andern Göttern.

Joshua said to all the people, “The Lord, the God of Israel, says this: ‘Long, long ago your forefathers, including Terah, the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates River, and they worshiped other gods.

3 Da nahm ich euren Vater Abraham von jenseits des Stromes und ließ ihn durch das ganze Land Kanaan wandern und mehrte seinen Samen und gab ihm Isaak.

I brought your father Abraham from beyond the Euphrates and led him through all the land of Canaan and gave him many descendants. I gave him Isaac.

4 Und dem Isaak gab ich Jakob und Esau; und dem Esau gab ich das Gebirge Seir zum Erbbesitz. Jakob aber und seine Kinder zogen hinab nach Ägypten.

I gave to Isaac Jacob and Esau. I gave to Esau the hill country of Seir to own, but Jacob and his children went down to Egypt.

5 Da sandte ich Mose und Aaron und plagte Ägypten, wie ich denn mitten unter ihnen getan habe.

I sent Moses and Aaron, and I brought plagues on the people of Egypt, and I brought you out.

6 Darnach führte ich euch heraus. Als ich aber eure Väter aus Ägypten führte und ihr an das Meer kamet und die Ägypter euren Vätern mit Wagen und Reitern bis an das Schilfmeer nachjagten, da schrieen sie zum HERRN;

Yes, I brought your forefathers out, but when you arrived at the Red Sea the Egyptians were chasing after your forefathers with chariots and horsemen.

7 der setzte eine Finsternis zwischen euch und die Ägypter und führte das Meer über sie und bedeckte sie. Und eure Augen haben gesehen, was ich in Ägypten getan habe. Darnach habt ihr lange Zeit in der Wüste gewohnt.

Your forefathers called out to the Lord for help, and he placed darkness between you and the Egyptians. Then he brought the sea back over them and they drowned. You saw what I did with your own eyes in Egypt. Then you lived for many years in the wilderness.

8 Dann brachte ich euch in das Land der Amoriter, die jenseits des Jordan wohnten; und als sie wider euch stritten, gab ich sie in eure Hand, so daß ihr derselben Land einnahmet, und ich vertilgte sie vor euch her.

After that I brought you to the land of the Amorites who lived on the other side of the Jordan. They fought against you but I handed them over to you to defeat and you took over their land. I destroyed them before you.

9 Da machte sich auf Balak, der Sohn Zippors, der König der Moabiter, und stritt wider Israel; und er sandte hin und ließ Bileam rufen, den Sohn Beors, damit er euch verfluche.

When Balak, son of Zippor, the king of Moab, wanted to fight against Israel, he sent for Balaam, son of Beor, to come and curse you.

10 Aber ich wollte Bileam nicht hören, sondern er mußte euch beständig segnen, und ich errettete euch aus seiner Hand.

But I wasn't willing to listen to Balaam, so instead he blessed you repeatedly, and saved you from Balak.

11 Und als ihr über den Jordan ginget und gen Jericho kamet, stritten die Bürger von Jericho wider euch, ebenso die Amoriter, Pheresiter, Kanaaniter, Hetiter, Girgasiter, Heviter und Jebusiter; aber ich gab sie in eure Hand.

You crossed the Jordan and arrived at Jericho where the men of Jericho fought against you. So did the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

12 Und ich sandte Hornissen vor euch her, die trieben sie aus vor euch her, nämlich die beiden Könige der Amoriter, nicht durch dein Schwert und nicht durch deinen Bogen.

But I handed them over to you to defeat. And I sent the hornet before you to drive out the two kings of the Amorites. You did not win using your swords or your bows!

13 Und ich habe euch ein Land gegeben, welches ihr nicht bearbeitet habt, und Städte, die ihr nicht gebaut habt, daß ihr darin wohnet; und ihr esset von Weinbergen und Olivenbäumen, die ihr nicht gepflanzt habt.

I gave you a land you didn't work for and towns you didn't build. Now you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves you didn't plant.’

14 So fürchtet nun den HERRN und dienet ihm aufrichtig und in der Wahrheit, und tut die Götter von euch, denen eure Väter jenseits des Stromes und in Ägypten gedient haben, und dienet dem HERRN!

So respect the Lord and worship him, sincerely and faithfully. Get rid of the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the Euphrates and in Egypt, and worship the Lord.

15 Gefällt es euch aber nicht, dem HERRN zu dienen, so erwählet euch heute, welchem ihr dienen wollt: den Göttern, denen eure Väter jenseits des Stromes gedient haben, oder den Göttern der Amoriter, in deren Land ihr wohnt; ich aber und mein Haus, wir wollen dem HERRN dienen!

But if you don't want to worship the Lord, choose today who you want to worship! Is it going to be the gods your forefathers worshipped beyond the Euphrates? Or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you're now living? But as for me and my family, we will worship the Lord!”

16 Da antwortete das Volk und sprach: Das sei ferne von uns, daß wir den HERRN verlassen und andern Göttern dienen!

The people responded, “We are never going to give up on the Lord and worship other gods!

17 Denn der HERR, unser Gott, ist der, welcher uns und unsre Väter aus Ägyptenland, aus dem Diensthause, geführt und vor unsern Augen so große Zeichen getan und uns behütet hat auf dem ganzen Wege, den wir gegangen sind, und unter allen Völkern, an welchen wir vorübergezogen sind.

For the Lord our God brought us and our forefathers out of slavery in Egypt. He was the one who did great miracles before our very eyes. He looked after us on the way as we traveled through the lands of many nations.

18 Und der HERR hat alle Völker vor uns her ausgestoßen, ja auch die Amoriter, die im Lande wohnten. Auch wir wollen dem HERRN dienen, denn er ist unser Gott!

The Lord drove out before us the Amorites and all the other nations who were living in the land. So we will worship the Lord, for he is our God!”

19 Josua sprach zum Volk: Ihr könnt dem HERRN nicht dienen; denn er ist ein heiliger Gott, ein eifriger Gott, der eure Übertretungen und Sünden nicht dulden wird.

Joshua told the people, “Remember that the Lord is a holy and jealous God. You won't be able to worship him, and he won't forgive your rebellion and sins

20 Wenn ihr den HERRN verlasset und fremden Göttern dienet, so wird er sich von euch abwenden und euch Übles tun und euch aufreiben, nachdem er euch Gutes getan hat.

if you give up on him and worship foreign gods. He will turn against you and destroy you despite all the good he has done for you.”

21 Da sprach das Volk zu Josua: Nein; denn wir wollen dem HERRN dienen!

“Don't say that!” the people replied. “We will worship the Lord!”

22 Da sprach Josua zum Volk: Ihr seid Zeugen gegen euch, daß ihr euch den HERRN erwählt habt, um ihm zu dienen! Und sie sprachen: Ja, wir sind Zeugen!

Then Joshua cautioned the people, “You have made yourselves witnesses against yourselves by saying that you have chosen to worship the Lord.” “Yes, we are witnesses,” the people replied.

23 So tut nun von euch [sprach er, ] die fremden Götter, die unter euch sind, und neiget euer Herz zu dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels!

“Then get rid of those foreign gods you have and promise to be loyal only to the Lord, the God of Israel,” Joshua told them.

24 Und das Volk sprach zu Josua: Wir wollen dem HERRN, unserm Gott, dienen und seiner Stimme gehorsam sein!

The people said to Joshua, “We will worship the Lord our God and we will obey him.”

25 Also machte Josua an jenem Tag einen Bund mit dem Volk und legte ihnen Satzungen und Rechte vor zu Sichem.

So Joshua made a solemn agreement between the people and the Lord that day in Shechem, obligating them to follow all the Lord's laws and instructions.

26 Und Josua schrieb diese Worte in das Gesetzbuch Gottes, und er nahm einen großen Stein und richtete ihn daselbst auf unter der Eiche, die bei dem Heiligtum des HERRN war.

Joshua recorded this in the Book of the Law of God, and he set up a large stone under the oak tree near the Lord's sanctuary.

27 Und Josua sprach zum ganzen Volk: Siehe, dieser Stein soll Zeuge gegen uns sein; denn er hat alle Reden gehört, welche der HERR mit uns geredet hat, und er soll Zeuge gegen euch sein, daß ihr euren Gott nicht verleugnet!

Joshua said to the people, “Look at this stone. It stands here as a witness against us for it has heard everything the Lord has told us, and it will be a witness against you if you ever deny what you have promised your God.”

28 Also entließ Josua das Volk, einen jeden in sein Erbteil.

Then Joshua dismissed the people, sending them to their allotted lands.

29 Und es begab sich nach diesen Geschichten, daß Josua, der Sohn Nuns, der Knecht des HERRN, starb, als er hundertundzehn Jahre alt war.

Later, after all this, Joshua, son of Nun, servant of the Lord, died at the age of one hundred and ten.

30 Und man begrub ihn im Gebiet seines Erbteils, zu Timnat-Serach, das auf dem Gebirge Ephraim liegt, nördlich vom Berge Gaasch.

They buried him in Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash, the land he had been allocated.

31 Und die Kinder Israel dienten dem HERRN, solange Josua lebte und die Ältesten, welche Josua überlebten, die auch alle Werke des HERRN wußten, welche er an Israel getan hatte.

The Israelites continued to worship the Lord throughout Joshua's life, and throughout the lifetimes of the elders who outlived him, those who had seen all that the Lord had done for Israel.

32 Und die Gebeine Josephs, welche die Kinder Israel aus Ägypten heraufgebracht hatten, begruben sie zu Sichem in dem Stück Land, welches Jakob von den Kindern Hemors, des Vaters Sichems, um hundert Kesita gekauft hatte und das zum Erbteil der Kinder Joseph gehörte.

The bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought with them from Egypt, they buried in Shechem in the piece of ground Jacob had bought from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, for one hundred pieces of silver. This land was inherited by Joseph's sons.

33 Eleasar, der Sohn Aarons, starb auch, und sie begruben ihn zu Gibea, [der Stadt] seines Sohnes Pinehas, die ihm auf dem Gebirge Ephraim gegeben worden war.

And Eleazar, son of Aaron, died and they buried him at Gibeah, in the hill country of Ephraim, land which had been given to his son Phinehas.
