Job 1
1 Es war ein Mann im Lande Uz, der hieß Hiob. Der war ein ganzer und gerader Mann, der Gott fürchtete und vom Bösen wich.
A man, there was—in the land of Uz, Job, his name, —and that man was blameless and upright, and one who revered God, and avoided evil.
2 Es wurden ihm sieben Söhne und drei Töchter geboren.
And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
3 Er besaß an Herden 7000 Schafe, 3000 Kamele, 500 Joch Rinder und 500 Eselinnen; und seine Dienerschaft war sehr groß, also daß der Mann größer war, als alle, die im Morgenlande wohnten.
And his substance was—seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a body of servants exceeding large, —thus was that man the greatest of all the sons of the East.
4 Seine Söhne aber gingen und machten Gastmähler, ein jeder in seinem Hause und an seinem Tage, und sie sandten hin und luden auch ihre drei Schwestern ein, um mit ihnen zu essen und zu trinken.
Now his sons were wont to go, and make a banquet, at the house of each one upon his day, —and to send and call their three sisters, to eat and to drink with them.
5 Wenn dann die Tage des Gastmahls zu Ende waren, ließ Hiob sie holen und heiligte sie; er stand des Morgens früh auf und brachte Opfer nach ihrer aller Zahl; denn Hiob sprach: Vielleicht möchten meine Söhne gesündigt und in ihren Herzen Gott den Abschied gegeben haben. Also tat Hiob allezeit.
And so it was, when the days of the banquet came round, that Job sent and hallowed them, and rising early in the morning offered ascending-sacrifices according to the number of them all; for Job said, Peradventure my sons have sinned, and have cursed God in their hearts. Thus and thus, was Job wont to do all the days.
6 Es begab sich aber eines Tages, da die Söhne Gottes vor den HERRN zu treten pflegten, daß auch der Satan unter ihnen kam.
Now there came a certain day, when the sons of God entered in to present themselves unto Yahweh, —so the accuser also entered, in their midst.
7 Da sprach der HERR zum Satan: Wo kommst du her? Satan antwortete dem HERRN und sprach: Ich habe das Land durchstreift und bin darin umhergegangen.
And Yahweh said unto the accuser, Whence comest thou? And the accuser answered Yahweh, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and wandering about therein.
8 Da sprach der HERR zum Satan: Hast du meinen Knecht Hiob beachtet? Denn seinesgleichen ist nicht auf Erden, ein so ganzer und gerader Mann, der Gott fürchtet und vom Bösen weicht.
And Yahweh said unto the accuser, Hast thou applied thy heart unto my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a man blameless and upright, one revering God and avoiding evil?
9 Satan antwortete dem HERRN und sprach: Ist Hiob umsonst gottesfürchtig?
And the accuser answered Yahweh, and said, Is it, for nought, that Job revereth God?
10 Hast du nicht ihn und sein Haus und alles, was er hat, ringsum eingehegt? Das Werk seiner Hände hast du gesegnet und seine Herden breiten sich im Lande aus.
Hast not, thou thyself, made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side? The work of his hands, thou hast blessed, and, his substance, hath broken forth in the land.
11 Aber strecke deine Hand aus und taste alles an, was er hat; laß sehen, ob er dir dann nicht ins Angesicht den Abschied geben wird!
But, in very deed, put forth, I pray thee, thy hand, and smite all that he hath, —verily, unto thy face, will he curse thee.
12 Da sprach der HERR zum Satan: Siehe, alles, was er hat, sei in deiner Hand; nur nach ihm selbst strecke deine Hand nicht aus! Also ging der Satan aus von dem Angesicht des HERRN.
And Yahweh said unto the accuser, Lo! all that he hath, is in thy hand, only, against himself, do not put forth thy hand. So the accuser went forth from the presence of Yahweh.
13 Und es begab sich eines Tages, da seine Söhne und Töchter im Hause ihres erstgeborenen Bruders aßen und Wein tranken,
And there came a certain day, —when his sons and his daughters were eating, and drinking wine, in the house of their eldest brother.
14 da kam ein Bote zu Hiob und sprach: Die Rinder pflügten und die Eselinnen weideten neben ihnen;
And, a messenger, came in unto Job, and said, —The oxen, were plowing, and, the asses, feeding beside them;
15 da fielen die Sabäer ein und nahmen sie weg und erschlugen die Knaben mit der Schärfe des Schwertes; ich aber bin entronnen, nur ich allein, um es dir anzuzeigen.
when the Sabeans swooped down, and took them, and, the young men, smote they with the edge of the sword, —and escaped am, only I alone, too tell thee.
16 Der redete noch, als ein anderer kam und sagte: Gottes Feuer ist vom Himmel gefallen und hat Schafe und Knaben angezündet und verzehrt; ich aber bin entronnen, nur ich allein, daß ich es dir anzeige!
Yet was this one speaking, when, another, came in and said, —A fire of God, fell out of the heavens, and burned up the sheep and the young men, and consumed them; and escaped am, only I alone, to tell thee.
17 Der redete noch, als ein anderer kam und sagte: Die Chaldäer haben drei Haufen aufgestellt und sind über die Kamele hergefallen und haben sie weggenommen und haben die Knaben mit der Schärfe des Schwertes erschlagen; ich aber bin entronnen, nur ich allein, um es dir anzuzeigen.
Yet was this one speaking, when, another, came in and said, The Chaldeans, appointed three chiefs, and spread out against the camels, and took them, and, the young men, smote they with the edge of the sword; and escaped am, only I alone, to tell thee.
18 Während dieser noch redete, kam ein anderer und sprach: Deine Söhne und Töchter aßen und tranken Wein im Hause ihres erstgeborenen Bruders;
Yet was this one speaking, when, another, came in and said, —Thy sons and thy daughters, were eating, and drinking wine, in the house of their eldest brother;
19 und siehe, da kam ein heftiger Wind drüben von der Wüste her und stieß an die vier Ecken des Hauses, so daß es auf die jungen Leute stürzte und sie starben; ich aber bin davongekommen, nur ich allein, daß ich es dir anzeige!
when lo! a great wind, came from over the desert, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they died, —and escaped am, only I alone, to tell thee.
20 Da stand Hiob auf und zerriß sein Kleid und schor sein Haupt und fiel zur Erde nieder und betete an.
Then Job arose, and rent his robe, and shaved his head, and fell to the earth and worshipped;
21 Und er sprach: Nackt bin ich von meiner Mutter Leibe gekommen, nackt werde ich wieder dahingehen; der HERR hat gegeben, der HERR hat genommen, der Name des HERRN sei gelobt!
and said—Naked came I forth from the womb of my mother, and naked must I return thither, Yahweh, gave, and, Yahweh, hath taken away, —The name of Yahweh be blessed!
22 Bei alledem sündigte Hiob nicht und benahm sich nicht ungebührlich gegen Gott.
In all this, Job sinned not, nor imputed folly unto God.
