1 Ziehst du das Krokodil mit der Angel heraus, legst du ihm einen Zaum ins Maul?
Whether thou schalt mowe drawe out leuyathan with an hook, and schalt bynde with a roop his tunge?
2 Kannst du einen Ring an seine Nase legen und einen Haken durch seine Kinnbacken stoßen?
Whethir thou schalt putte a ryng in hise nosethirlis, ethir schalt perse hyse cheke with `an hook?
3 Wird es dich lange bitten oder dir Zärtlichkeiten sagen?
Whether he schal multiplie preieris to thee, ether schal speke softe thingis to thee?
4 Wird es einen Bund mit dir schließen, daß du es zum ewigen Knechte machest?
Whether he schal make couenaunt with thee, and `thou schalt take him a seruaunt euerlastinge?
5 Kannst du mit ihm spielen wie mit einem Vögelein, oder es anbinden für deine Mädchen?
Whether thou schalt scorne hym as a brid, ethir schalt bynde hym to thin handmaidis?
6 Verkaufen es die Genossen untereinander, oder teilen es die Händler unter sich?
Schulen frendis `kerue hym, schulen marchauntis departe hym?
7 Kannst du seine Haut mit Pfeilen spicken und mit Fischerhaken seinen Kopf?
Whether thou schalt fille nettis with his skyn, and a `leep of fischis with his heed?
8 Lege deine Hand daran. Du wirst des Kampfes nicht vergessen, wirst es nicht zum zweitenmal tun!
Schalt thou putte thin hond on hym? haue thou mynde of the batel, and adde no more to speke.
9 Siehe, die Hoffnung auf dasselbe wird getäuscht; fällt man nicht schon bei seinem Anblick dahin?
Lo! his hope schal disseyue hym; and in the siyt of alle men he schal be cast doun.
10 Niemand ist so kühn, daß er es reizen möchte; wer kann aber vor Mir bestehen?
I not as cruel schal reise hym; for who may ayenstonde my face?
11 Wer ist mir zuvorgekommen, daß ich es ihm vergelte? Unter dem ganzen Himmel ist alles mein!
And who `yaf to me bifore, that Y yelde to hym? Alle thingis, that ben vndur heuene, ben myne.
12 Ich will von seinen Gliedern nicht schweigen, sondern reden von seiner großen und schönen Gestalt.

13 Wer entblößt es von seinem Schuppenpanzer und greift ihm in sein doppeltes Gebiß?
Who schal schewe the face of his clothing, and who schal entre in to the myddis of his mouth?
14 Wer öffnet die Türen seines Rachens? Seine Zähne verbreiten Schrecken.
Who schal opene the yatis of his cheer? ferdfulnesse is bi the cumpas of hise teeth.
15 Prächtig sind seine starken Schilder, fest zusammengeschlossen und versiegelt;
His bodi is as yotun scheldys of bras, and ioyned togidere with scalis ouerleiynge hem silf.
16 einer fügt sich an den andern, daß kein Luftzug dazwischen kommt;
Oon is ioyned to another; and sotheli brething goith not thorouy tho.
17 sie hängen fest zusammen, sind geschlossen und trennen sich nicht.
Oon schal cleue to anothir, and tho holdynge hem silf schulen not be departid.
18 Sein Niesen strahlt wie Licht, und seine Augen sind wie die Wimpern der Morgenröte.
His fnesynge is as schynynge of fier, and hise iyen ben as iyelidis of the morewtid.
19 Aus seinem Rachen schießen Fackeln, Feuerfunken entsprühen ihm.
Laumpis comen forth of his mouth, as trees of fier, that ben kyndlid.
20 Dampf geht auf von seinen Nüstern, und der Sumpf wird wie ein siedender Topf.
Smoke cometh forth of hise nosethirlis, as of a pot set on the fier `and boilynge.
21 Sein Atem facht Kohlen an, eine Flamme schießt aus seinem Munde.
His breeth makith colis to brenne, and flawme goith out of his mouth.
22 Stärke wohnt auf seinem Nacken und Schrecken zieht vor ihm her.
Strengthe schal dwelle in his necke, and nedynesse schal go bifor his face.
23 Die Wampen seines Fleisches sitzen fest wie angegossen und bewegen sich nicht.
The membris of hise fleischis ben cleuynge togidere to hem silf; God schal sende floodis ayens hym, and tho schulen not be borun to an other place.
24 Sein Herz ist hart wie Stein und so fest wie der untere Mühlstein.
His herte schal be maad hard as a stoon; and it schal be streyned togidere as the anefeld of a smith.
25 Die Helden erbeben, wenn es auffährt; vor Zittern geht ihr Bogen fehl.
Whanne he schal be takun awei, aungels schulen drede; and thei aferd schulen be purgid.
26 Greift man es mit dem Schwerte an, so haftet dieses nicht, kein Speer, kein Wurfspieß und kein Pfeil.
Whanne swerd takith hym, it may not stonde, nethir spere, nether haburioun.
27 Es achtet Eisen für einen Strohhalm, und Erz für faules Holz.
For he schal arette irun as chaffis, and bras as rotun tre.
28 Kein Pfeil vermag es in die Flucht zu schlagen, und Schleudersteine fallen wie Spreu von ihm ab.

29 Es achtet die Keule für einen Halm und verlacht das Sausen der Spieße.
He schal arette an hamer as stobil; and he schal scorne a florischynge spere.
30 Unter ihm sind spitze Scherben, es zieht wie ein Dreschschlitten über den Schlamm dahin.

31 Es macht die Tiefe sieden wie einen Kessel, macht das Meer zu einem Salbentopf.
He schal make the depe se to buyle as a pot; and he schal putte, as whanne oynementis buylen.
32 Hinter ihm her leuchtet der Pfad, es macht die Flut den Silberhaaren gleich.
A path schal schyne aftir hym; he schal gesse the greet occian as wexynge eld.
33 Auf Erden ist nicht seinesgleichen; es ist gemacht, um ohne Furcht zu sein.
No power is on erthe, that schal be comparisound to hym; which is maad, that he schulde drede noon.
34 Es schaut alle Hohen [furchtlos] an, es ist ein König über alle Stolzen.
He seeth al hiy thing; he is kyng ouer alle the sones of pride.
