Job 38
1 Da antwortete der HERR dem Hiob aus dem Gewittersturm und sprach:
Then did the Lord address Job out of the storm-wind, and said,
2 Wer verfinstert da Gottes Rat mit seinen unverständigen Reden?
Who is this that casteth darkness [on my] counsel by words without knowledge?
3 Gürte doch deine Lenden wie ein Mann! Ich will dich fragen, lehre mich!
Do but gird up like a mighty man thy loins: and I will ask thee, and do thou inform me.
4 Wo warst du, als ich den Grund der Erde legte? Sage an, wenn du es weißt!
Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? tell it, if thou hast any understanding [of it].
5 Wer hat ihre Maße bestimmt? Weißt du das? Oder wer hat die Meßschnur über sie ausgespannt?
Who fixed her measurements, if thou knowest it? or who stretched the measuring-line over her?
6 Worauf wurden ihre Grundpfeiler gestellt, oder wer hat ihren Eckstein gelegt,
Upon what are her foundation-pillars placed at rest? or who laid her corner-stone:
7 als die Morgensterne miteinander jauchzten und alle Söhne Gottes jubelten?
When altogether sang the morning stars in gladness, and shouted for joy all the sons of God?
8 Wer hat das Meer mit Dämmen umgeben, als es hervorbrach wie aus Mutterleib,
And who closed up with doors the sea, when, issuing forth, it came out of the deep bosom of the earth?
9 da ich es in Wolken kleidete und es in dicke Nebel, wie in Windeln band;
When I made the clouds its garment, and thick fog its swaddling-cloth,
10 da ich ihm seine Grenze zog und ihm Damm und Riegel gab und zu ihm sprach:
And when I decreed for it my law, and set [for it] bars and doors,
11 «Bis hierher sollst du kommen und nicht weiter, hier soll sich legen deiner Wellen Stolz!»?
And said, Thus far mayest thou come, but no farther; and here shall be stayed [thy strength] in the pride of thy waves?
12 Hast du zu deiner Zeit den Sonnenaufgang angeordnet und dem Morgenrot seinen Platz angewiesen,
Didst thou ever, in all thy days, command the morning; didst thou ever assign the morning-dawn its place:
13 daß es die Enden der Erde ergreife, damit die Frevler von ihr abgeschüttelt werden?
That it might lay hold of the ends of the earth, so that the wicked might be shaken out therefrom?
14 Sie wandelt sich wie Ton unter dem Siegel und alles steht da wie ein [Pracht-]Gewand;
She is changed as the sealing-clay: and [all things] stand as though newly clad.
15 den Gottlosen wird ihr Licht entzogen und der Frevler Arm zerbricht.
And from the wicked is their light withdrawn, and the high-raised arm is broken.
16 Bist du auch bis zu den Meeresquellen gekommen, oder hast du die Meerestiefe ausgeforscht?
Didst thou ever penetrate as far as the springs of the sea? or wander through the bottom of the deep?
17 Sind dir die Tore des Todes geöffnet worden, oder hast du die Tore des Todesschattens gesehen?
Were the gates of death ever laid open unto thee? or canst thou see the doors of the shadow of death?
18 Hast du die Breiten der Erde überschaut? Weißt du das alles, so sage es mir!
Hast thou a clear understanding of the breadth of the earth? Tell it, if thou knowest it all.
19 Welches ist der Weg zu den Wohnungen des Lichts, und wo hat die Finsternis ihren Ort,
Where is the way [to the spot where] the light dwelleth? and the darkness—where is its place,
20 daß du bis zu ihrer Grenze gelangen und den Pfad zu ihrem Hause finden könntest?
That thou mightest take each to its boundary, and that thou mightest mark the pathways to its house?
21 Du weißt es, denn zu der Zeit warst du geboren, und die Zahl deiner Tage ist groß!
Thou [surely] knowest it; because thou wast then born, and the number of thy days is great!
22 Bist du auch bis zu den Vorratskammern des Schnees gekommen, und hast du die Speicher des Hagels gesehen,
Didst thou ever enter into the treasuries of the snow? or canst thou see the treasuries of the hail,
23 die ich aufbehalten habe für die Zeit der Not, für den Tag des Krieges und des Streits?
Which I have reserved for the time of distress, for the day of fight and battle?
24 Auf welche Weise verteilt sich das Licht, und wie verbreitet sich der Ostwind über die Erde?
Where is the way [to the spot where] the light divideth itself, [where] the east wind is scattered over the earth?
25 Wer hat dem Regenstrom sein Bett gegraben und dem Donnerstrahl einen Weg gebahnt,
Who hath divided off watercourses for the overflowing rain, and a way for the lightning [that is followed by] thunders,
26 damit es regne auf unbewohntes Land, auf die Wüste, wo kein Mensch ist,
To bring rain on a land, void of men; on a wilderness wherein no son of earth [is found];
27 um zu sättigen die Einöde und Wildnis, damit das junge Grün gedeihen kann?
To satisfy waste and desolate lands; and to promote the growth of the tender grass?
28 Hat der Regen auch einen Vater, und wer hat die Tropfen des Taues erzeugt?
Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of the dew?
29 Aus wessen Leibe ist das Eis hervorgegangen, und wer hat des Himmels Reif geboren?
Out of whose womb cometh forth the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven—who giveth birth to it?
30 Wie zu Stein erstarren die Gewässer, und der Wasserspiegel schließt sich fest zusammen.
[When] like a stone the waters are congealed, and the face of the deep is bound in fetters?
31 Hast du die Bande des Siebengestirns geknüpft, oder kannst du die Fesseln des Orion lösen?
Canst thou bind together the chains of the Pleiades, or loosen the bands of Orion?
32 Kannst du die Zeichen des Tierkreises zu ihrer Zeit herausführen, und leitest du den Großen Bären samt seinen Jungen?
Canst thou bring forth the constellations of the zodiac, each in its season? or canst thou guide the Bear with its young?
33 Kennst du die Gesetze des Himmels, oder bestimmst du seine Herrschaft über die Erde?
Knowest thou the laws of heaven? or dost thou appoint its rule on the earth?
34 Kannst du deine Stimme zu den Wolken erheben [und befehlen], daß dich Regengüsse bedecken?
Canst thou lift up to the clouds thy voice, that the abundance of waters may cover thee?
35 Kannst du Blitze entsenden, daß sie hinfahren und zu dir sagen: Siehe, hier sind wir?
Canst thou send out lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here are we?
36 Wer hat Weisheit in die Nieren gelegt, oder wer hat dem Herzen Verstand verliehen?
Who hath put wisdom in the dark clouds? or who hath given understanding to the bright meteors?
37 Wer zählt die Wolken mit Weisheit, und wer schüttet die Schläuche des Himmels aus,
Who ordaineth the skies with wisdom? or who emptieth out the bottles of heaven.
38 daß der Staub zu Klumpen wird und die Schollen aneinander kleben?
When the dust is poured out as molten metal, and the clods are made to cleave fast together?
39 Jagst du der Löwin ihre Beute und stillst die Begierde der jungen Löwen,
Dost thou hunt for the lioness her prey? and suppliest thou the food for the young lions,
40 wenn sie in ihren Höhlen kauern, im Dickicht auf der Lauer liegen?
When they are couched in their lairs, rest in the thicket, lying in wait?
41 Wer bereitet den Raben ihre Speise, wenn ihre Jungen zu Gott schreien und aus Mangel an Nahrung herumflattern?
Who provideth for the raven his provision? when his young ones cry unto God, and wander about for lack of food?
