Job 23
1 Da antwortete Hiob und sprach:
Then Job answered and said,
2 Auch heute noch ist meine Klage bitter; seine Hand preßt mir schwere Seufzer aus!
“Even today my complaint is bitter; my hand is heavy because of my groaning.
3 O daß ich wüßte, wo ich Ihn fände! Ich würde zu seinem Throne gehen.
Oh, that I knew where I might find him! Oh, that I might come to his place!
4 Ich würde ihm die Streitfrage vorlegen und meinen Mund mit Beweisen füllen;
I would lay my case in order before him and fill my mouth with arguments.
5 ich möchte wissen, was er mir antworten, und gerne sehen, was er zu mir sagen würde.
I would learn the words with which he would answer me and would understand what he would say to me.
6 Würde er heftig mit mir streiten? Nein, er würde mich gewiß anhören.
Would he argue against me in the greatness of his power? No, he would pay attention to me.
7 Da würde der Redliche bei ihm Recht finden, und ich würde auf ewig frei ausgehen von meinem Richter.
There the upright person might argue with him. In this way I would be acquitted forever by my judge.
8 Wenn ich aber schon nach Osten gehe, so ist er nirgends; wende ich mich nach Westen, so werde ich seiner nicht gewahr;
See, I go eastward, but he is not there, and westward, but I cannot perceive him.
9 begibt er sich nach Norden, so erspähe ich ihn nicht, verbirgt er sich im Süden, so kann ich ihn nicht sehen.
To the north, where he is at work, but I cannot see him, and to the south, where he hides himself so that I cannot see him.
10 Er aber kennt meinen Weg; er prüfe mich, so werde ich wie Gold hervorgehen!
But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come out like gold.
11 Mein Fuß hat seinen Pfad innegehalten; seinen Weg habe ich bewahrt, ich bog nicht davon ab;
My foot has held fast to his steps; I have kept to his way and turned not aside.
12 vom Gebote seiner Lippen wich ich nicht; in meinem Busen bewahrte ich die Reden seiner Lippen.
I have not gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my portion of food.
13 Doch Er bleibt sich gleich, und wer will ihn davon abbringen? Was er will, das tut er.
But he is one of a kind, who can turn him back? What he desires, he does.
14 Er vollführt, was mir bestimmt ist, und dergleichen hat er viel im Sinn.
For he carries out his decree against me; there are many like them.
15 Darum schrecke ich zurück vor ihm, und wenn ich daran denke, so fürchte ich mich davor.
Therefore, I am terrified in his presence; when I think about him, I am afraid of him.
16 Ja, Gott hat mein Herz verzagt gemacht, und der Allmächtige hat mich erschreckt.
For God has made my heart weak; the Almighty has terrified me.
17 Daß ich [aber] nicht vergehe vor dem Anblick der Finsternis, hat er vor meinem Angesicht das Dunkel verdeckt.
I have not been brought to an end by darkness, because of the thick darkness that covers the gloom of my face.
