Esra 5

1 Haggai aber, der Prophet, und Sacharja, der Sohn Iddos, die Propheten, weissagten den Juden, die in Juda und zu Jerusalem waren; im Namen des Gottes Israels weissagten sie ihnen.

Now Aggeus the prophet, and Zacharias the son of Addo, prophesied to the Jews that were in Judea and Jerusalem, in the name of the God of Israel.

2 Da machten sich auf Serubbabel, der Sohn Sealtiels, und Jesua, der Sohn Jozadaks, und fingen an, das Haus Gottes zu Jerusalem zu bauen, und mit ihnen die Propheten Gottes, die sie stärkten.

Then rose up Zorobabel the son of Salathiel, and Josue the son of Josedec, and began to build the temple of God in Jerusalem, and with them were the prophets of God helping them.

3 Zu jener Zeit kamen zu ihnen Tatnai, der Landpfleger diesseits des Stromes, und Setar-Bosnai und ihre Genossen und sprachen also zu ihnen: Wer hat euch befohlen, dieses Haus zu bauen und seine Mauern auszubessern?

And at the same time came to them Thathanai, who was governor beyond the river, and Stharbuzanai, and their counsellors: and said thus to them: Who hath given you counsel to build this house, and to repair the walls thereof?

4 Darauf sagten wir ihnen die Namen der Männer, die diesen Bau führten.

In answer to which we gave them the names of the men who were the promoters of that building.

5 Aber das Auge ihres Gottes war auf die Ältesten der Juden gerichtet, so daß ihnen nicht gewehrt wurde, bis die Sache Darius vorgelegt und ein Brief mit seiner Antwort zurückgekommen wäre.

But the eye of their God was upon the ancients of the Jews, and they could not hinder them. And it was agreed that the matter should be referred to Darius, and then they should give satisfaction concerning that accusation.

6 Folgendes aber ist die Abschrift des Briefes, den Tatnai, der Landpfleger diesseits des Stromes, und Setar-Bosnai und ihre Genossen von Apharsach, die diesseits des Stromes waren, an den König Darius geschickt haben.

The copy of the letter that Thathanai governor of the country beyond the river, and Stharbuzanai, and his counsellors the Arphasachites, who dwelt beyond the river, sent to Darius the king.

7 Sie sandten ihm einen Bericht, darin war folgendes geschrieben: «Dem König Darius allen Frieden!

The letter which they sent him, was written thus: To Darius the king all peace.

8 Dem König sei kund, daß wir in das jüdische Land zu dem Hause des großen Gottes gekommen sind; es wird mit schön gehauenen Steinen gebaut, und man legt Balken in die Wände; und dieses Werk geht schnell und glücklich unter ihrer Hand vonstatten.

Be it known to the king, that we went to the province of Judea, to the house of the great God, which they are building with unpolished stones, and timber is laid in the walls: and this work is carried on diligently, and advanceth in their hands.

9 Da fragten wir diese Ältesten und sagten zu ihnen also: Wer hat euch befohlen, dieses Haus zu bauen und seine Mauern wieder aufzuführen?

And we asked those ancients, and said to them thus: Who hath given you authority to build this house, and to repair these walls?

10 Wir fragten sie auch nach ihren Namen, um sie dir mitzuteilen, und wir haben die Namen der Männer, die ihre Obersten sind, aufgezeichnet.

We asked also of them their names, that we might give thee notice: and we have written the names of the men that are the chief among them.

11 Sie aber gaben uns folgendes zur Antwort: Wir sind Knechte des Gottes des Himmels und der Erde und bauen das Haus, das vor vielen Jahren gebaut war, welches ein großer König von Israel gebaut und aufgeführt hat.

And they answered us in these words, saying: We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are building a temple that was built these many years ago, and which a great king of Israel built and set up.

12 Aber als unsere Väter den Gott des Himmels erzürnten, gab er sie in die Hand Nebukadnezars, des Königs von Babel, des Chaldäers; der zerstörte dieses Haus und führte das Volk hinweg gen Babel.

But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven to wrath, he delivered them into the hands of Nabuchodonosor the king of Babylon the Chaldean: and he destroyed this house, and carried away the people to Babylon.

13 Aber im ersten Regierungsjahre Kores`, des Königs von Babel, befahl König Kores, dieses Haus Gottes zu bauen.

But in the first year of Cyrus the king of Babylon, king Cyrus set forth a decree, that this house of God should be built.

14 Und auch die goldenen und silbernen Geräte des Hauses Gottes, die Nebukadnezar aus dem Tempel zu Jerusalem genommen und in den Tempel zu Babel verbracht hatte, nahm der König Kores aus dem Tempel zu Babel und gab sie einem [Manne], namens Sesbazzar, den er zum Landpfleger einsetzte,

And the vessels also of gold and silver of the temple of God, which Nabuchodonosor had taken out of the temple, that was in Jerusalem, and had brought them to the temple of Babylon, king Cyrus brought out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered to one Sassabasar, whom also he appointed governor,

15 und sprach zu ihm: Nimm diese Geräte, ziehe hin und bringe sie in den Tempel, der zu Jerusalem ist, und laß das Haus Gottes an seiner Stätte aufgebaut werden.

And said to him: Take these vessels, and go, and put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be built in its place.

16 Da kam dieser Sesbazzar und legte den Grund zum Hause Gottes in Jerusalem. Und seit jener Zeit und bis jetzt baut man daran, und es ist noch nicht vollendet.

Then came this same Sassabasar, and laid the foundations of the temple of God in Jerusalem, and from that time until now it is in building, and is not yet finished.

17 Siehe, gefällt es nun dem König, so lasse er in dem Schatzhause des Königs, welches zu Babel ist, nachforschen, ob wirklich vom König Kores befohlen worden sei, dieses Haus Gottes zu Jerusalem aufzubauen; und der König sende uns seine Entscheidung darüber!»

Now therefore if it seem good to the king, let him search in the king’s library, which is in Babylon, whether it hath been decreed by Cyrus the king, that the house of God in Jerusalem should be built, and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.
