Ester 4

1 Als nun Mardochai alles erfuhr, was geschehen war, zerriß Mardochai seine Kleider und kleidete sich in Sack und Asche und ging in die Stadt hinein und klagte laut und bitterlich.

When, Mordecai, came to know all that had been done, Mordecai rent his garments, and put on sackcloth, and ashes, —and went forth into the midst of the city, and cried out with an outcry loud and bitter;

2 Und er kam bis vor das Königstor; denn es durfte niemand zum Königstor eingehen, der einen Sack anhatte.

and went in as far as before the gate of the king, —for, none, might enter into the gate of the king, clothed with sackcloth.

3 Da war auch in allen Provinzen, wo immer des Königs Wort und Gebot hinkam, unter den Juden große Klage und Fasten und Weinen und Leidtragen, und viele lagen in Säcken und in der Asche.

And, throughout every province, whithersoever the word of the king and his edict came, was great mourning to the Jews, and fasting and weeping, and lamentation, —sackcloth and ashes, were spread out for many.

4 Da kamen die Mägde der Esther und ihre Kämmerer und sagten es ihr; und dieses bekümmerte die Königin sehr. Und sie sandte Kleider, damit Mardochai sie anzöge und den Sack von sich legte. Aber er nahm sie nicht an.

So the maidens of Esther and her eunuchs went in and told her, and the queen writhed in great anguish, —and sent garments to clothe Mordecai, and to remove his sackcloth from off him, but he accepted them not.

5 Da rief Esther den Hatach, einen Kämmerer des Königs, den er für sie bestellt hatte, und gab ihm Befehl, bei Mardochai in Erfahrung zu bringen, was das bedeute und warum es geschehe.

Then called Esther for Hathach, one of the eunuchs of the king whom he had stationed before her, and charged him, concerning Mordecai, —to get to know what this was, and why this was.

6 Da ging Hatach zu Mardochai hinaus auf den Platz der Stadt, vor das Königstor.

So Hathach went forth unto Mordecai, —in the broadway of the city, which was before the gate of the king.

7 Und Mardochai tat ihm alles kund, was ihm begegnet war, auch die genaue Summe Silbers, die Haman versprochen hatte, in der Schatzkammer des Königs darzuwägen als Entgelt für die Vertilgung der Juden.

And Mordecai told him all that had befallen him, —and an exact statement of the silver, that Haman had promised to weigh out unto the treasuries of the king, for the Jews, to destroy them.

8 Und er gab ihm die Abschrift des Gebots, das betreffs der Vertilgung zu Susan erlassen worden war, damit er es Esther zeige und ihr kundtue und ihr gebiete, zum König hineinzugehen, um seine Gnade zu erflehen und vor seinem Angesicht für ihr Volk zu bitten.

Also, a copy of the writing of the edict which had been given in Shusan to destroy them, gave he unto him, to shew unto Esther, and to tell her, —and to lay charge upon her, to go in unto the king—to make supplication unto him, and to make request before him, for her people.

9 Da ging Hatach hinein und tat Esther die Worte Mardochais kund.

And Hathach came in and told Esther, the words of Mordecai.

10 Da sprach Esther zu Hatach und befahl ihm, Mardochai zu sagen:

Then spake Esther unto Hathach, —and gave him charge, unto Mordecai: —

11 Alle Knechte des Königs und die Leute in den königlichen Provinzen wissen, daß, wer irgend in den innern Hof zum König hineingeht, es sei Mann oder Weib, ohne gerufen zu sein, nach dem gleichen Gesetz sterben muß, es sei denn, daß der König das goldene Zepter gegen ihn ausstreckt, damit er am Leben bleibe. Ich aber bin nun seit dreißig Tagen nicht gerufen worden, zum König hineinzugehen.

All the servants of the king, and the people of the provinces of the king, do know, that, whatsoever man or woman shall go in unto the king—into the inter court—who hath not been called, one, is his law, to put him to death, saving any to whom the king may hold out the golden sceptre, who then shall live, —but, I, have not been called to go in unto the king, these thirty days.

12 Als nun Esthers Worte dem Mardochai mitgeteilt wurden,

And they told Mordecai, the words of Esther.

13 ließ Mardochai der Esther antworten: Bilde dir ja nicht ein, daß du vor allen Juden entrinnen werdest, weil du in des Königs Hause bist!

Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, —Do not think in thine own soul, to escape in the house of the king from among all the Jews.

14 Denn wenn du unter diesen Umständen schweigst, so wird den Juden von einer andern Seite her Trost und Rettung erstehen, du aber und deines Vaters Haus werden umkommen. Und wer weiß, ob du nicht um dieser Umstände willen zum Königtum gekommen bist?

But, if thou, do indeed hold thy peace, at this time, respite and deliverance, will be appointed for the Jews, from another place, but, thou, and thy father’s house, will perish, —and who knoweth whether, for a time such as this, thou hast attained unto the royal estate?

15 Da ließ Esther dem Mardochai antworten:

Then Esther commanded, to answer Mordecai: —

16 So gehe hin, versammle alle Juden, die zu Susan anwesend sind, und fastet für mich, drei Tage lang bei Tag und Nacht, esset und trinket nicht. Auch ich will mit meinen Mägden also fasten, und alsdann will ich zum König hineingehen, wiewohl es nicht nach dem Gesetze ist. Komme ich um, so komme ich um!

Go! gather ye together all the Jews who are to be found in Shusan, and fast ye for me—and neither eat nor drink—three days, night nor day, and, I and my maidens, will fast so, —and, in this manner, will I go in unto the king, though it is not according to the law, and, when I have perished, I have perished!

17 Mardochai ging hin und tat alles ganz so, wie Esther ihm befohlen hatte.

So Mordecai departed, —and did according to all that Esther had charged upon him.
