1 Samuel 3

1 Und der Knabe Samuel diente dem HERRN vor Eli. Zu jener Zeit war das Wort des HERRN teuer; es brach sich keine Offenbarung Bahn.

[While he was still a] boy, Samuel was working for Yahweh while Eli supervised him. At that time there were very few messages [that anyone received] from Yahweh, and very few people saw visions [that Yahweh gave them].

2 Und es begab sich eines Tages, daß Eli an seinem Orte lag; seine Augen hatten angefangen dunkel zu werden, so daß er nicht mehr sehen konnte.

By that time Eli’s eyes were very weak; he was almost blind. [One night] he was sleeping in his room,

3 Und die Lampe Gottes war noch nicht erloschen; Samuel aber schlief im Tempel des HERRN, wo die Lade Gottes war.

and Samuel was sleeping in the sacred tent, where the chest that contained the Ten Commandments was kept. While the sacred lamp was still burning,

4 Und der Herr rief den Samuel. Er aber antwortete: Siehe, hier bin ich!

Yahweh called, “Samuel! Samuel!” Samuel replied, “I’m here!”

5 Und er lief zu Eli und sprach: Siehe, hier bin ich, denn du hast mich gerufen! Er aber sprach: Ich habe dich nicht gerufen; geh wieder hin und lege dich schlafen! Und er ging hin und legte sich schlafen.

Then he [got up and] ran to Eli. He said to him, “I am here, because you called me!” But Eli replied, “No, I did not call you. Go back to your bed.” So Samuel went and lay down again.

6 Da rief der HERR abermal: Samuel! Und Samuel stand auf und ging zu Eli und sprach: Siehe, hier bin ich; denn du hast mich gerufen! Er aber sprach: Ich habe dich nicht gerufen, mein Sohn; geh wieder hin und lege dich schlafen!

Then Yahweh called again, “Samuel!” So Samuel got up again and went to Eli and said, “I am here, because you called me!” But Eli said, “No, my son, I did not call you. Go back and lie down.”

7 Samuel aber kannte den HERRN noch nicht, und das Wort des HERRN war ihm noch nicht geoffenbart.

At that time Samuel did not yet know [that] Yahweh [could speak to him], because Yahweh had not previously revealed anything to him.

8 Da rief der HERR dem Samuel zum drittenmal. Und er stand auf und ging zu Eli und sprach: Siehe, hier bin ich, denn du hast mich gerufen! Da merkte Eli, daß der HERR den Knaben rief,

[After Samuel lay down again], Yahweh called him a third time. So again Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “I am here, because you called me!” Then Eli realized that it was Yahweh who was calling the boy.

9 und Eli sprach zu Samuel: Geh wieder hin und lege dich schlafen; und wenn er dich rufen wird, so sprich: Rede, HERR; denn dein Knecht hört! Samuel ging hin und legte sich an seinen Ort.

So he said to Samuel, “Go and lie down again. If someone calls you again, say ‘Speak to me, Yahweh, because I am listening!’” So Samuel went and lay down again.

10 Da kam der HERR und trat dahin und rief wie zuvor: Samuel! Samuel! Und Samuel sprach: Rede, denn dein Knecht hört!

Then Yahweh came and stood there and called as he had done the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak to me, because I am listening!”

11 Und der HERR sprach zu Samuel: Siehe, ich tue eine Sache in Israel, daß dem, der es hören wird, beide Ohren gellen werden.

Then Yahweh said to Samuel, “Listen carefully. I am about to do something here in Israel that will shock/horrify [IDM] everyone who hears about it.

12 An demselben Tage will ich an Eli in Erfüllung gehen lassen alles, was ich wider sein Haus geredet habe; ich will es anfangen und vollenden.

When that happens, I will punish Eli and his family. I will do to them everything that I said that I would do.

13 Denn ich habe es ihm gesagt, daß ich Richter sein wolle über sein Haus ewiglich, um der Missetat willen, von der er wußte, daß seine Söhne sich den Fluch zuzogen, und er hat ihnen nicht gewehrt.

His sons have shown great disrespect for me by the disgraceful things they have done, and Eli did not restrain them. So I told him that I would punish his family forever.

14 Und darum habe ich dem Hause Eli geschworen, daß die Missetat des Hauses Eli ewiglich nicht gesühnt werden soll, weder durch Schlachtopfer noch durch Speisopfer!

I solemnly promised to Eli’s family, ‘You will never be able to avoid the consequences for your sin, even if you give me sacrifices or offerings.’”

15 Und Samuel lag bis zum Morgen und tat die Türen auf am Hause des HERRN. Samuel aber fürchtete sich, Eli das Gesicht mitzuteilen.

Samuel lay down again until morning. Then he got up and opened the doors of the Sacred Tent [as usual]. He was afraid to tell Eli about the vision [that Yahweh had given him].

16 Da rief ihm Eli und sprach: Samuel, mein Sohn! Er antwortet: Siehe, hier bin ich!

But Eli called him and said, “Samuel, my son!” Samuel answered, “I am here!”

17 Er sprach: Wie lautet das Wort, das zu dir geredet worden ist? Verbirg es doch nicht vor mir! Gott tue dir dies und das, wenn du mir etwas verbirgst von allem, was er mit dir geredet hat!

Eli asked him, “What was it that Yahweh told you? Do not conceal it! I want God to punish you severely if you do not tell me everything that he said to you.”

18 Da sagte ihm Samuel alles und verbarg nichts vor ihm. Er aber sprach: Es ist der HERR; er tue, was ihm wohlgefällt!

So Samuel told him everything. He did not refuse to tell him anything. Then Eli said, “He is Yahweh. I am willing for him to do what he thinks is best.”

19 Samuel aber wuchs heran, und der HERR war mit ihm und ließ keines von allen seinen Worten auf die Erde fallen.

As Samuel grew up, Yahweh helped him, and caused everything to (come true/happen) that Samuel predicted.

20 Und ganz Israel von Dan bis Beerseba erkannte, daß Samuel beglaubigt war als ein Prophet des HERRN.

So all the people of Israel, from the northern end of the country to the southern end, realized that Samuel was truly a prophet of Yahweh.

21 Und der HERR fuhr fort, zu Silo zu erscheinen; denn der HERR offenbarte sich dem Samuel zu Silo durch das Wort des HERRN.

Yahweh continued to appear to Samuel in Shiloh and give messages to him.
