1 Samuel 11
1 Aber Nahas, der Ammoniter, zog herauf und belagerte Jabes in Gilead. Da sprachen alle Männer von Jabes zu Nahas: Mache einen Bund mit uns, so wollen wir dir dienen!
Then Nahash the Ammonite went and laid seige to Jabesh Gilead. All the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you.”
2 Aber Nahas, der Ammoniter, antwortete ihnen: So will ich mit euch einen Bund machen, daß ich euch allen das rechte Auge aussteche und damit auf ganz Israel Schmach bringe.
Nahash the Ammonite replied, “On this condition will I make a treaty with you, that I gouge out all of your right eyes, and in this way bring disgrace on all Israel.”
3 Da sprachen die Ältesten von Jabes zu ihm: Gib uns sieben Tage Frist, daß wir Boten senden in das ganze Gebiet Israels. Ist dann niemand, der uns hilft, so wollen wir zu dir hinausgehen!
Then the elders of Jabesh replied to him, “Leave us alone for seven days, so that we may send messengers to all the territory of Israel. Then, if there is no one to save us, we will surrender to you.”
4 Da kamen die Boten nach Gibea zu Saul und redeten solches vor den Ohren des Volkes. Da erhob das ganze Volk seine Stimme und weinte.
The messengers came to Gibeah, where Saul lived, and told the people what had happened. All the people wept loudly.
5 Und siehe, da kam gerade Saul vom Felde hinter den Rindern her und sprach: Was hat das Volk, daß es weint? Da erzählten sie ihm die Worte der Männer von Jabes.
Now Saul was following the oxen out of the field. Saul said, “What is wrong with the people that they are weeping?” They told Saul what the men of Jabesh had said.
6 Da kam der Geist Gottes über Saul, als er diese Worte hörte, und sein Zorn ergrimmte sehr;
When Saul heard what they said, the Spirit of God rushed upon him, and he was very angry.
7 und er nahm ein Paar Rinder und zerstückelte sie und sandte davon durch Boten in alle Landmarken Israels und ließ sagen: Wer nicht auszieht, Saul und Samuel nach, dessen Rindern wird man also tun! Da fiel die Furcht des HERRN auf das Volk, daß sie auszogen wie ein Mann.
He took a yoke of oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent them throughout all the territory of Israel with the messengers. He said, “Whoever does not come out after Saul and after Samuel, this is what will be done to his oxen.” Then the terror of Yahweh fell on the people, and they came out together as one man.
8 Und er musterte sie zu Besek; und der Kinder Israel waren dreihunderttausend Mann und der Männer Juda dreißigtausend.
When he mustered them at Bezek, the people of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.
9 Und sie sprachen zu den Boten, die gekommen waren: Also sollt ihr zu den Männern von Jabes in Gilead sagen: Morgen soll euch Rettung zuteil werden, wenn die Sonne am heißesten scheint! Als die Boten kamen und solches den Männern zu Jabes verkündigten, wurden sie froh.
They said to the messengers that came, “You will tell the men of Jabesh Gilead, 'Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you will be rescued.'” So the messengers went and told the men of Jabesh, and they were glad.
10 Und die Männer von Jabes sprachen: Morgen wollen wir zu euch hinauskommen, dann könnt ihr mit uns tun, was euch gut dünkt!
Then the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Tomorrow we will surrender to you, and you can do to us whatever seems good to you.”
11 Am andern Morgen stellte Saul das Volk in drei Heerhaufen auf, und sie drangen um die Morgenwache ins [feindliche] Lager und schlugen die Ammoniter, bis der Tag am heißesten war; die Übriggebliebenen aber wurden so versprengt, daß ihrer nicht zwei beieinander blieben.
The next day Saul put the people in three groups. They came into the middle of the camp during the morning watch, and they attacked and defeated the Ammonites until the heat of the day. Those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.
12 Da sprach das Volk zu Samuel: Wer sind die, welche sagten: Sollte Saul über uns herrschen? Gebt diese Männer her, daß wir sie töten!
Then the people said to Samuel, “Who was it who said, 'Will Saul reign over us?' Bring the men, so we can put them to death.”
13 Saul aber sprach: Es soll an diesem Tag niemand sterben; denn der HERR hat heute Heil gegeben in Israel.
But Saul said, “No one must be put to death this day, because today Yahweh has rescued Israel.”
14 Samuel sprach zum Volk: Kommt, laßt uns nach Gilgal gehen und das Königtum daselbst erneuern!
Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal and renew the monarchy there.”
15 Da ging alles Volk nach Gilgal und machte daselbst Saul zum König vor dem HERRN zu Gilgal und opferte daselbst Dankopfer vor dem HERRN. Und Saul und alle Männer Israels freuten sich daselbst gar sehr.
So all the people went to Gilgal and made Saul king before Yahweh in Gilgal. There they sacrificed peace offerings before Yahweh, and Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
