1 Und nach langer Zeit, im dritten Jahre, erging das Wort des HERRN an Elia also: Gehe hin, zeige dich Ahab, damit ich regen lasse auf den Erdboden.
After many days, the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go and show yourself to Ahab, so that I may grant rain upon the face of the earth.”
2 Und Elia ging hin, um sich Ahab zu zeigen. Es war aber eine große Hungersnot zu Samaria.
Therefore, Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. For there was a severe famine in Samaria.
3 Und Ahab rief Obadja, seinen Hofmeister. Obadja aber fürchtete den HERRN sehr.
And Ahab called Obadiah, the manager of his household. Now Obadiah feared the Lord greatly.
4 Denn als Isebel die Propheten des HERRN ausrottete, nahm Obadja hundert Propheten und verbarg sie in den Höhlen, hier fünfzig und dort fünfzig, und versorgte sie mit Brot und Wasser.
For when Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord, he took one hundred prophets, and concealed them, fifty and fifty, in caves. And he fed them with bread and water.
5 So sprach nun Ahab zu Obadja: Ziehe durch das Land, zu allen Wasserbrunnen und zu allen Bächen; vielleicht finden wir Gras, um die Pferde und Maultiere am Leben zu erhalten, daß nicht alles Vieh umkomme!
Then Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go into the land, to all fountains of water, and to all the valleys, for perhaps we will be able to find plants, and save the horses and mules, so that the beasts of burden may not perish entirely.”
6 Und sie teilten das Land unter sich, um es zu durchziehen. Ahab zog allein auf einem Wege und Obadja auch allein auf einem andern Weg.
And they divided the regions among themselves, so that they might travel through them. Ahab went one way alone, and Obadiah went another way by himself.
7 Als nun Obadja auf dem Wege war, siehe, da begegnete ihm Elia. Und als er ihn erkannte, fiel er auf sein Angesicht und sprach: Bist du nicht mein Herr Elia?
And while Obadiah was on the way, Elijah met him. And when he had recognized him, he fell on his face, and he said, “Are you not my lord Elijah?”
8 Er sprach zu ihm: Doch! Gehe hin und sage deinem Herrn: Siehe, Elia ist hier!
And he responded to him: “I am. Go and tell your lord that Elijah is here.”
9 Er aber sprach: Was habe ich gesündigt, daß du deinen Knecht in die Hand Ahabs geben willst, daß er mich töte?
And he said: “How have I sinned that you would deliver me, your servant, into the hand of Ahab, so that he would put me to death?
10 So wahr der HERR, dein Gott, lebt, es gibt kein Volk noch Königreich, dahin mein Herr nicht gesandt hätte, dich zu suchen. Und wenn sie sprachen: «Er ist nicht hier», nahm er einen Eid von jenem Königreich und von jenem Volk, daß man dich nicht gefunden habe.
As the Lord your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom to which my lord has not sent, seeking you. And when all responded, ‘He is not here,’ he swore each kingdom and nation to an oath, because you were not found at all.
11 Und du sprichst nun: Gehe hin, sage deinem Herrn: Siehe, Elia ist hier!
And now, you say to me, ‘Go and tell your lord that Elijah is here.’
12 Wenn ich nun von dir ginge, so würde dich der Geist des HERRN hinwegnehmen, ich weiß nicht wohin; und wenn ich dann käme und es Ahab sagte, und er fände dich nicht, so würde er mich töten; und doch fürchtet dein Knecht den HERRN von Jugend auf!
And when I will have departed from you, the Spirit of the Lord will transport you to a place that I do not know. And entering, I will report to Ahab. And he, not finding you, will put me to death. Yet your servant has feared the Lord from his infancy.
13 Ist meinem HERRN nicht gesagt worden, was ich getan habe, als Isebel die Propheten des HERRN tötete, daß ich von den Propheten des HERRN hundert verbarg, hier fünfzig und dort fünfzig, in Höhlen, und sie mit Brot und Wasser versorgte?
Has it not been revealed to you, my lord, what I did when Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord: how I hid one hundred men from the prophets of the Lord, fifty and fifty, in caves, and how I fed them with bread and water?
14 Und du sprichst nun: Gehe hin, sage deinem Herrn: Siehe, Elia ist hier! Er würde mich ja töten!
And now you say: ‘Go and tell your lord that Elijah is here,’ so that he may kill me!”
15 Elia sprach: So wahr der HERR der Heerscharen lebt, vor dem ich stehe, ich will mich ihm heute zeigen!
And Elijah said, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before whose face I stand, this day I will appear to him.”
16 Da ging Obadja hin, Ahab entgegen, und sagte es ihm; Ahab aber kam Elia entgegen.
Therefore, Obadiah went away to meet Ahab, and he reported to him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah.
17 Und als Ahab den Elia sah, sprach Ahab zu ihm: Bist du da, der Israel ins Unglück bringt?
And when he had seen him, he said, “Are you the one who is disturbing Israel?”
18 Er aber sprach: Nicht ich bringe Israel ins Unglück, sondern du und deines Vaters Haus, weil ihr die Gebote des HERRN verlassen habt und den Baalen nachwandelt!
And he said: “I have not troubled Israel. But it is you, and the house of your father, who have abandoned the commandments of the Lord, and have followed the Baals.
19 Wohlan, so sende nun hin und versammle zu mir ganz Israel auf den Berg Karmel, dazu die 450 Propheten des Baal und die 400 Propheten der Aschera, die am Tische der Isebel essen!
Yet truly now, send and gather to me all of Israel, on Mount Carmel, with the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal, and the four hundred prophets of the sacred groves, who eat from the table of Jezebel.”
20 Also sandte Ahab hin unter alle Kinder Israel und versammelte die Propheten auf dem Karmel.
Ahab sent to all the sons of Israel, and he gathered together the prophets on mount Carmel.
21 Da trat Elia zu allem Volk und sprach: Wie lange hinket ihr nach beiden Seiten? Ist der HERR Gott, so folget ihm nach, ist es aber Baal, so folget ihm! Und das Volk antwortete ihm nichts.
Then Elijah, drawing near to all the people, said: “How long will you waver between two sides? If the Lord is God, follow him. But if Baal is, then follow him.” And the people did not respond a word to him.
22 Da sprach Elia zum Volk: Ich bin allein übriggeblieben als Prophet des HERRN, der Propheten Baals aber sind 450 Mann.
And Elijah said again to the people: “I alone remain as a prophet of the Lord. But the prophets of Baal are four hundred and fifty men.
23 So gebt uns nun zwei Farren und lasset sie den einen Farren erwählen und ihn zerstücken und auf das Holz legen und kein Feuer daran legen; so will ich den andern Farren zurichten und auf das Holz legen und auch kein Feuer daran legen.
Let two oxen be given to us. And let them choose one ox for themselves, and, cutting it into pieces, let them set it on the wood. But they may not place fire under it. And I will prepare the other ox, and set it on the wood. But I will not place fire under it.
24 Dann rufet ihr den Namen eures Gottes an, und ich will den Namen des HERRN anrufen. Welcher Gott mit Feuer antworten wird, der sei Gott! Da antwortete das ganze Volk und sprach: Das Wort ist gut!
Call upon the names of your gods. And I will call on the name of my Lord. And the God who will have heeded with fire, let him be God.” And in response, all the people said, “Excellent proposition.”
25 Und Elia sprach zu den Propheten Baals: Erwählet euch den einen Farren und bereitet ihn zuerst zu, denn euer sind viele, und rufet den Namen eures Gottes an und leget kein Feuer daran!
Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal: “Choose for yourselves one ox, and prepare it first. For you are many. And call on the names of your gods, but do not place fire under it.”
26 Und sie nahmen den Farren, den er ihnen gab, und richteten ihn zu und riefen den Namen Baals an vom Morgen bis zum Mittag und sprachen: O Baal, erhöre uns! Aber da war keine Stimme noch Antwort. Und sie hüpften um den Altar, den man gemacht hatte.
And when they had taken an ox, which he had given to them, they prepared it. And they called on the name of Baal, from morning even until midday, saying, “O Baal, heed us.” And there was no voice, nor did anyone respond. And so they leaped upon the altar that they had made.
27 Als es nun Mittag war, spottete Elia ihrer und sprach: Rufet laut! denn er ist ja ein Gott; vielleicht denkt er nach oder hat zu schaffen oder ist auf Reisen oder schläft vielleicht und wird aufwachen!
And when it was now midday, Elijah ridiculed them, saying: “Cry out with a louder voice. For he is a god, and perhaps he is talking, or at an inn, or on a journey, or certainly he may be asleep, and must be awakened.”
28 Und sie riefen laut und machten Einschnitte nach ihrer Weise mit Schwertern und Spießen, bis das Blut über sie floß.
Then they cried out with a loud voice, and they cut themselves, in accord with their ritual, with knives and lancets, until they were entirely covered in blood.
29 Als aber der Mittag vergangen war, weissagten sie, bis es Zeit war, das Speisopfer darzubringen; aber da war keine Stimme noch Antwort noch Aufmerken.
Then, after midday had passed, and they were prophesying, the time had arrived when the sacrifice is usually offered. And there was no voice heard, neither did anyone heed or respond to the praying.
30 Da sprach Elia zu allem Volk: Tretet heran zu mir! Als nun alles Volk zu ihm trat, stellte er den Altar des HERRN, der zerbrochen war, wieder her.
Elijah said to all the people, “Draw near to me.” And as the people were drawing near to him, he repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down.
31 Und Elia nahm zwölf Steine, nach der Zahl der Stämme der Kinder Jakobs, an welchen das Wort des HERRN also ergangen war: Du sollst Israel heißen!
And he took twelve stones, in accord with the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came, saying, “Israel shall be your name.”
32 Und er baute von den Steinen einen Altar im Namen des HERRN und machte um den Altar her einen Graben von der Tiefe eines Getreidedoppelmaßes;
And he built from the stones an altar to the name of the Lord. And he made a trench for water, like two furrows of plowed land, all around the altar.
33 und er richtete das Holz zu und zerstückte den Farren und legte ihn auf das Holz und sprach:
And he arranged the wood, and he cut the ox into pieces, and he placed it on the wood.
34 Füllet vier Krüge mit Wasser und gießet es auf das Brandopfer und auf das Holz! Und er sprach: Tut es noch einmal! Und sie taten es noch einmal. Und er sprach: Tut es zum drittenmal! Und sie taten es zum drittenmal.
And he said, “Fill four containers with water, and pour it over the holocaust, and over the wood.” And again, he said, “Do this a second time.” And when they had done it a second time, he said, “Do it also a third time.” And they did so a third time.
35 Und das Wasser lief um den Altar her, und der Graben ward auch voll Wasser.
And the water was running down around the altar, and the pit of the trench was filled with water.
36 Und um die Zeit, da man das Speisopfer darbringt, trat der Prophet Elia herzu und sprach: O HERR, Gott Abrahams, Isaaks und Israels, laß heute kund werden, daß du Gott in Israel bist und ich dein Knecht und daß ich solches alles nach deinem Wort getan habe!
And when it was now time for the holocaust to be offered, the prophet Elijah, drawing near, said: “O Lord, God of Abraham, and Isaac, and Israel, reveal this day that you are the God of Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have acted, in all these things, in accord with your precept.
37 Erhöre mich, o HERR, erhöre mich, daß dieses Volk erkenne, daß du, HERR, Gott bist, und daß du ihr Herz herumgewendet hast!
Heed me, O Lord, heed me, so that this people may learn that you are the Lord God, and that you have converted their heart again.”
38 Da fiel das Feuer des HERRN herab und fraß das Brandopfer und das Holz und die Steine und die Erde; und es leckte das Wasser auf in dem Graben.
Then the fire of the Lord fell down and devoured the holocaust, and the wood, and the stones, and even the dust, and it absorbed the water that was in the trench.
39 Als alles Volk solches sah, fielen sie auf ihr Angesicht und sprachen: Der HERR ist Gott! der HERR ist Gott!
And when all the people had seen it, they fell upon their face, and they said: “The Lord himself is God! The Lord himself is God!”
40 Elia aber sprach zu ihnen: Fanget die Propheten Baals, daß ihrer keiner entrinne! Und sie fingen sie. Und Elia führte sie hinab an den Bach Kison und schlachtete sie daselbst.
And Elijah said to them, “Apprehend the prophets of Baal, and do not let even one of them escape.” And when they had apprehended them, Elijah led them down to the torrent Kishon, and he put them to death there.
41 Und Elia sprach zu Ahab: Ziehe hinauf, iß und trink, denn es rauscht, als wolle es reichlich regnen!
And Elijah said to Ahab “Ascend; eat and drink. For there is the sound of an abundance of rain.”
42 Und als Ahab hinaufzog, um zu essen und zu trinken, ging Elia auf die Spitze des Karmel und beugte sich zur Erde und tat sein Angesicht zwischen seine Knie
Ahab ascended, so that he might eat and drink. But Elijah ascended to the top of Carmel, and bending down to the ground, he placed his face between his knees.
43 und sprach zu seinem Knaben: Gehe doch hinauf und siehe nach dem Meere hin! Da ging er hinauf und schaute hin und sprach: Es ist nichts da! Er sprach: Gehe wieder hin, siebenmal!
And he said to his servant, “Ascend, and gaze out toward the sea.” And when he had ascended, and had contemplated, he said, “There is nothing.” And again, he said to him, “Return seven times.”
44 Und beim siebenten Mal sprach er: Siehe, es steigt eine kleine Wolke aus dem Meere auf, wie eines Mannes Hand. Er sprach: Gehe hin und sage zu Ahab: Spanne an und fahre hinab, daß dich der Regen nicht zurückhalte!
And at the seventh time, behold, a little cloud ascended from the sea like the footstep of a man. And he said: “Ascend, and say to Ahab, ‘Yoke your chariot, and descend; otherwise, the rain may prevent you.’”
45 Und ehe man zusah, ward der Himmel schwarz von Wolken und Wind, und es kam ein gewaltiger Regen. Ahab aber stieg auf und fuhr nach Jesreel.
And as he was turning himself this way and that, behold, the heavens were darkened, and there were clouds and wind, and a great rainstorm occurred. And so Ahab, going up, went away to Jezreel.
46 Und die Hand des HERRN kam über Elia; und er gürtete seine Lenden und lief vor Ahab her bis gen Jesreel.
And the hand of the Lord was upon Elijah. And cinching his waist, he ran before Ahab, until he arrived at Jezreel.
