Roemers 4

1 Was werden wir somit von unserm Stammvater Abraham sagen? Was hat er nach dem Fleisch erlangt?

What, then, may we say that Abraham, our father after the flesh, has got?

2 Wenn Abraham nämlich aufgrund von Werken gerechtfertigt worden ist, so hat er allerdings Grund, sich zu rühmen, freilich (auch dann) nicht vor Gott.

For if Abraham got righteousness by works, he has reason for pride; but not before God.

3 Denn was sagt die Schrift? »Abraham glaubte Gott, und das wurde ihm zur Gerechtigkeit gerechnet.«

But what does it say in the holy Writings? And Abraham had faith in God, and it was put to his account as righteousness.

4 Wenn nun jemand Werke verrichtet, so erhält er den Lohn nicht aus Gnade angerechnet, sondern (zugeteilt) nach Schuldigkeit;

Now, the reward is credited to him who does works, not as of grace but as a debt.

5 wer dagegen keine Werke verrichtet, sondern an den glaubt, der den Gottlosen rechtfertigt, dem wird sein Glaube zur Gerechtigkeit gerechnet;

But to him who without working has faith in him who gives righteousness to the evil-doer, his faith is put to his account as righteousness.

6 wie ja auch David die Seligpreisung über den Menschen ausspricht, dem Gott Gerechtigkeit ohne Rücksicht auf Werke anrechnet:

As David says that there is a blessing on the man to whose account God puts righteousness without works, saying,

7 »Glückselig sind die, denen die Gesetzesübertretungen vergeben und deren Sünden zugedeckt worden sind;

Happy are those who have forgiveness for their wrongdoing, and whose sins are covered.

8 glückselig ist der Mann, dem der Herr (die) Sünde nicht anrechnet.«

Happy is the man against whom no sin is recorded by the Lord.

9 Gilt nun diese Seligpreisung nur den Beschnittenen oder auch den Unbeschnittenen? Wir behaupten ja doch: »Dem Abraham wurde sein Glaube zur Gerechtigkeit gerechnet.«

Is this blessing, then, for the circumcision only, or in the same way for those who have not circumcision? for we say that the faith of Abraham was put to his account as righteousness.

10 Unter welchen Umständen hat denn diese Anrechnung stattgefunden? Als er schon beschnitten oder als er noch unbeschnitten war? Nun: nicht als er schon beschnitten, sondern als er noch unbeschnitten war;

How, then, was it judged? when he had circumcision, or when he had it not? Not when he had it, but when he did not have it:

11 und das äußere Zeichen der Beschneidung empfing er dann als Siegel für die Glaubensgerechtigkeit, die er im Zustande der Unbeschnittenheit besessen hatte. So sollte er der Vater aller derer werden, die ohne Beschneidung glauben, damit ihnen die Gerechtigkeit angerechnet werde,

And he was given the sign of circumcision as a witness of the faith which he had before he underwent circumcision: so that he might be the father of all those who have faith, though they have not circumcision, and so that righteousness might be put to their account;

12 und (ebenso) der Vater der Beschnittenen, nämlich derer, die nicht nur infolge der (leiblichen) Beschneidung ihm angehören, sondern die auch in den Fußtapfen des Glaubens wandeln, den unser Vater Abraham schon in unbeschnittenem Zustande besessen hat.

And the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who keep to the way of that faith which our father Abraham had before he underwent circumcision.

13 Denn die Verheißung, die Abraham oder sein Samen empfangen hat, daß er der Erbe der Welt sein sollte, ist ihm nicht durch das Gesetz zuteil geworden, sondern durch die Glaubensgerechtigkeit.

For God's word, that the earth would be his heritage, was given to Abraham, not through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

14 Wenn nämlich die Gesetzesleute die Erben sind, so ist damit der Glaube entleert und die Verheißung entkräftet;

For if they who are of the law are the people who get the heritage, then faith is made of no use, and the word of God has no power;

15 denn das Gesetz bringt (nur) Zorn zustande; wo dagegen kein Gesetz ist, da gibt es auch keine Übertretung.

For the outcome of the law is wrath; but where there is no law it will not be broken.

16 Deshalb ist es an den Glauben gebunden – es soll ja ein Gnadengeschenk sein –, damit die Verheißung für die gesamte Nachkommenschaft Gültigkeit habe, und zwar nicht nur für die, welche es aufgrund des Gesetzes ist, sondern auch für die, welche wie Abraham glaubt, der ja unser aller Vater ist –

For this reason it is of faith, so that it may be through grace; and so that the word of God may be certain to all the seed; not only to that which is of the law, but to that which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,

17 nach dem Schriftwort: »Zum Vater vieler Völker habe ich dich gesetzt« – vor dem Gott, dem er geglaubt hat als dem, welcher die Toten lebendig macht und das noch nicht Vorhandene benennt, als wäre es schon vorhanden.

(As it is said in the holy Writings, I have made you a father of a number of nations) before him in whom he had faith, that is, God, who gives life to the dead, and to whom the things which are not are as if they were.

18 Abraham hat da, wo nichts zu hoffen war, doch hoffnungsvoll am Glauben festgehalten, damit er der Vater vieler Völker würde nach der Verheißung: »So (unzählbar) soll deine Nachkommenschaft sein«;

Who without reason for hope, in faith went on hoping, so that he became the father of a number of nations, as it had been said, So will your seed be.

19 und ohne im Glauben schwach zu werden, nahm er, der fast hundertjährige Mann, die Erstorbenheit seines eigenen Leibes und den schon erstorbenen Mutterschoß der Sara wahr.

And not being feeble in faith though his body seemed to him little better than dead (he being about a hundred years old) and Sarah was no longer able to have children:

20 Trotzdem ließ er sich im Hinblick auf die Verheißung Gottes nicht durch Unglauben irre machen, sondern vielmehr wurde er im Glauben immer stärker, indem er Gott die Ehre gab

Still, he did not give up faith in the undertaking of God, but was made strong by faith, giving glory to God,

21 und der festen Überzeugung lebte, daß Gott das, was er verheißen hatte, auch zu verwirklichen vermöge.

And being certain that God was able to keep his word.

22 Darum ist es ihm auch zur Gerechtigkeit gerechnet worden.

For which reason it was put to his account as righteousness.

23 Aber nicht nur um seinetwillen steht geschrieben, daß es ihm angerechnet worden ist,

Now, it was not because of him only that this was said,

24 sondern auch um unsertwillen; denn auch uns soll es angerechnet werden, uns, die wir an den glauben, der unsern Herrn Jesus von den Toten auferweckt hat,

But for us in addition, to whose account it will be put, if we have faith in him who made Jesus our Lord come back again from the dead,

25 ihn, der um unserer Übertretungen willen in den Tod gegeben und um unserer Rechtfertigung willen auferweckt worden ist.

Who was put to death for our evil-doing, and came to life again so that we might have righteousness.
