Psalm 40

1 Dem Musikmeister; von David ein Psalm. Geduldig hatte ich des HERRN geharrt:

For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.

2 er zog mich herauf aus der Grube des Unheils, aus dem schlammigen Sumpf, und stellte meine Füße auf Felsengrund, verlieh meinen Schritten Festigkeit;

He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay; and he set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.

3 er legte ein neues Lied mir in den Mund, einen Lobgesang auf unsern Gott. Das werden viele sehen und Ehrfurcht fühlen und Vertrauen fassen zum HERRN.

And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.

4 Glückselig der Mann, der sein Vertrauen setzt auf den HERRN, der’s nicht mit den Stolzen hält und nicht mit den treulosen Lügenfreunden!

Blessed is the man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.

5 Zahlreich sind die Wunder, die du getan hast, und deine Heilsgedanken mit uns, o HERR, mein Gott; dir ist nichts zu vergleichen; wollt’ ich von ihnen reden und sie verkünden – sie übersteigen jede Zahl.

Many, O LORD my God, are the wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be set in order unto thee; if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.

6 An Schlacht- und Speisopfern hast du kein Gefallen, doch offne Ohren hast du mir gegeben; nach Brand- und Sündopfern trägst du kein Verlangen.

Sacrifice and offering thou hast no delight in; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.

7 Da hab’ ich gesagt: »Siehe, hier bin ich! In der Rolle des Buches, da steht für mich geschrieben:

Then said I, Lo, I am come; in the roll of the book it is written of me:

8 Deinen Willen zu tun, mein Gott, ist meine Lust, und dein Gesetz ist tief mir ins Herz geschrieben.«

I delight to do thy will, O my God; yea, thy law is within my heart.

9 Von (deiner) Gerechtigkeit hab’ ich in großer Versammlung gesprochen, siehe, meinen Lippen hab’ ich nicht Einhalt getan: du selbst, HERR, weißt es!

I have published righteousness in the great congregation; lo, I will not refrain my lips, O LORD, thou knowest.

10 Deine Gerechtigkeit habe ich nicht verborgen in meinem Herzen, von deiner Treue und Hilfe laut geredet; ich habe deine Gnade und Wahrheit nicht verschwiegen, vor der großen Versammlung.

I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation.

11 So wirst du, HERR, mir dein Erbarmen nicht versagen; deine Gnade und Wahrheit werden stets mich behüten.

Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O LORD: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me.

12 Denn Leiden ohne Zahl umringen mich, meine Sünden haben mich ereilt, unübersehbar; zahlreicher sind sie als die Haare meines Hauptes, und der Mut ist mir entschwunden.

For innumerable evils have compassed me about, mine iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head, and my heart hath failed me.

13 Laß dir’s wohlgefallen, o HERR, mich zu retten, eile, o HERR, zu meiner Hilfe herbei!

Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me: make haste to help me, O LORD.

14 Laß sie allesamt beschämt und schamrot werden, die nach dem Leben mir stehn, um es wegzuraffen! Laß mit Schande beladen abziehn, die mein Unglück wünschen!

Let them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my soul to destroy it: let them be turned backward and brought to dishonour that delight in my hurt.

15 Erschaudern müssen ob ihrer Schmach, die über mich rufen: »Haha, haha!«

Let them be desolate by reason of their shame that say unto me, Aha, Aha.

16 Laß jubeln und deiner sich freuen alle, die dich suchen; laß alle, die nach deinem Heil verlangen, immerdar bekennen: »Groß ist der HERR.«

Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say continually, The LORD be magnified.

17 Bin ich auch elend und arm – der Allherr wird für mich sorgen. Meine Hilfe und mein Retter bist du: mein Gott, säume nicht!

But I am poor and needy; [yet] the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.
