Psalm 107
1 »Danket dem HERRN, denn er ist freundlich, ja, ewiglich währt seine Gnade«:
Thank the Lord, for he is good! His trustworthy love continues forever!
2 so sollen die vom HERRN Erlösten sprechen, die er befreit hat aus Drangsal
Let those the Lord has saved say that they are saved; those he has rescued from the power of the enemy.
3 und die er gesammelt aus den Ländern vom Aufgang her und vom Niedergang, vom Norden her und vom Meer.
He has gathered them together from distant lands, from the east and the west, the north and the south.
4 Sie irrten umher in der Wüste, der Öde, und fanden den Weg nicht zu einer Wohnstatt;
They wandered in the desert wilderness, unable to find a way to a city where they could live.
5 gequält vom Hunger und vom Durst, wollte ihre Seele in ihnen verschmachten.
Hungry and thirsty, they became very discouraged.
6 Da schrien sie zum HERRN in ihrer Not, und er rettete sie aus ihren Ängsten
Then they cried out to the Lord to help them in their troubles, and he saved them from their suffering.
7 und leitete sie auf richtigem Wege, daß sie kamen zu einer bewohnten Ortschaft: –
He led them along a straight way to a city where they could live.
8 die mögen danken dem HERRN für seine Güte und für seine Wundertaten an den Menschenkindern,
Let them praise the Lord for his trustworthy love, and for all the wonderful things he does for people.
9 daß er die lechzende Seele gesättigt und die hungernde Seele gefüllt hat mit Labung.
For he gives drink to those who are thirsty, and food to those who are hungry.
10 Die da saßen in Finsternis und Todesnacht, gefangen in Elend und Eisenbanden –
Some sat in complete darkness, prisoners of misery and bound with iron chains,
11 denn sie hatten Gottes Geboten getrotzt und den Ratschluß des Höchsten verachtet,
for they had rebelled against what God had said; they had rejected the guidance of the Most High.
12 so daß er ihren Sinn durch Leiden beugte, daß sie niedersanken und keinen Helfer hatten –;
So he humbled their pride with the troubles of life; they tripped over and no one was there to stop them falling.
13 da schrien sie zum HERRN in ihrer Not, und er rettete sie aus ihren Ängsten;
Then they called out to the Lord for help in their troubles, and he saved them from their suffering.
14 er führte sie heraus aus Finsternis und Todesnacht und zersprengte ihre Fesseln: –
He brought them out of complete darkness, he broke their chains to pieces.
15 die mögen danken dem HERRN für seine Güte und für seine Wundertaten an den Menschenkindern,
Let them praise the Lord for his trustworthy love, and for all the wonderful things he does for people.
16 daß er eherne Türen zerbrochen und eiserne Riegel zerschlagen.
For he breaks down the bronze doors, and cuts through the iron bars.
17 Die da krank waren infolge ihres Sündenlebens und wegen ihrer Verfehlungen leiden mußten –
They were stupid because they rebelled; they suffered for their sins.
18 vor jeglicher Speise hatten sie Widerwillen, so daß sie den Pforten des Todes nahe waren –;
They didn't want to eat; they were at death's door.
19 da schrien sie zum HERRN in ihrer Not, und er rettete sie aus ihren Ängsten;
Then they called out to the Lord for help in their troubles, and he saved them from their suffering.
20 er sandte sein Wort, sie gesund zu machen, und ließ sie aus ihren Gruben entrinnen: –
He gave the command and he healed them; he saved them from the grave.
21 die mögen danken dem HERRN für seine Güte und für seine Wundertaten an den Menschenkindern;
Let them praise the Lord for his trustworthy love, and for all the wonderful things he does for people.
22 sie mögen Opfer des Dankes bringen und seine Taten mit Jubel verkünden!
Let them present thank offerings and sing with joy about what he has done.
23 Die aufs Meer gefahren waren in Schiffen, auf weiten Fluten Handelsgeschäfte trieben,
Those who set sail in ships, crossing the seas to earn their living,
24 die haben das Walten des HERRN geschaut und seine Wundertaten auf hoher See.
they have seen the Lord's incredible power at work—the wonderful things he did in the deepest oceans.
25 Denn er gebot und ließ einen Sturm entstehn, der hoch die Wogen des Meeres türmte:
He only had to speak to cause a stormy wind that stirred up towering waves,
26 sie stiegen empor zum Himmel und fuhren hinab in die Tiefen, so daß ihr Herz vor Angst verzagte;
lifting the ships high in the air and then plunging them down. The sailors were so terrified that their courage melted away.
27 sie wurden schwindlig und schwankten wie Trunkne, und mit all ihrer Weisheit war’s zu Ende: –
They staggered around, falling from side to side like drunks—all their seamanship skills were useless.
28 da schrien sie zum HERRN in ihrer Not, und er befreite sie aus ihren Ängsten;
Then they cried out to the Lord to help them in their troubles, and he saved them from their suffering.
29 er stillte das Ungewitter zum Säuseln, und das Toben der Wogen verstummte;
He calmed the storm, the waves were quiet.
30 da wurden sie froh, daß es still geworden, und er führte sie zum ersehnten Hafen: –
The sailors were so happy when it all calmed down, and he brought them to the harbor they wanted.
31 die mögen danken dem HERRN für seine Güte und für seine Wundertaten an den Menschenkindern;
Let them praise the Lord for his trustworthy love, and for all the wonderful things he does for people.
32 sie mögen ihn erheben in der Volksgemeinde und im Kreise der Alten ihn preisen!
Let them say how wonderful he is in front of the whole congregation and the elders.
33 Er wandelte Ströme zur Wüste und Wasserquellen zu dürrem Land,
He dries up rivers and turns the land into a desert; the water springs stop flowing and the earth turns dry and dusty.
34 fruchtbares Erdreich zu salziger Steppe wegen der Bosheit seiner Bewohner.
Fruitful ground becomes a salty wasteland because of the wickedness of those living there.
35 Wiederum machte er wüstes Land zum Wasserteich und dürres Gebiet zu Wasserquellen
But he also turns around and makes pools of water in the desert, and makes water springs flow in a dry and dusty land.
36 und ließ dort Hungrige seßhaft werden, so daß sie eine Stadt zum Wohnsitz bauten
He brings hungry people to live there—a place they can build their cities.
37 und Felder besäten und Weinberge pflanzten, die reichen Ertrag an Früchten brachten;
They sow their fields and plant their vineyards, producing a good harvest.
38 und er segnete sie, daß sie stark sich mehrten, und ließ ihres Viehs nicht wenig sein.
He takes care of them, and their numbers increase dramatically—their cattle too!
39 Dann aber nahmen sie ab und wurden gebeugt durch den Druck des Unglücks und Kummers;
When they become few, brought low by oppression, misery, and sorrow,
40 »über Edle goß er Verachtung aus und ließ sie irren in pfadloser Öde«.
He pours out his contempt on their leaders, making them wander, lost in the wilderness.
41 Den Armen aber hob er empor aus dem Elend und machte seine Geschlechter wie Kleinviehherden.
But he lifts the poor out of their troubles, and makes their families as big as flocks.
42 »Die Gerechten sehen’s und freuen sich, alle Bosheit aber muß schließen ihren Mund«.
Those who live right will observe what is happening and be glad, but the wicked will be silenced.
43 Wer ist weise? Der beachte dies und lerne die Gnadenerweise des HERRN verstehn!
Those who are wise will pay attention to all this, and thoughtfully reflect on the Lord's trustworthy love.
