Sprueche 18

1 Der Sonderling geht dem eigenen Gelüsten nach; er kämpft gegen alles an, was frommt. –

Whoever has a will to withdraw from a friend, seeks occasions; he shall be reproached at all times.

2 Dem Toren ist es nicht um Einsicht zu tun, sondern nur um die Kundmachung seiner Gedanken. –

The foolish do not accept words of prudence, unless you say what is already turning in his heart.

3 Wo Gottlosigkeit verübt wird, da stellt sich auch Verachtung ein, und mit der Schandtat kommt die Schmach. –

The impious, when he has arrived within the depths of sin, thinks little of it. But ill repute and disgrace follow him.

4 Tiefe Wasser sind die Worte aus dem Munde manches Mannes, ein sprudelnder Bach, ein Born der Weisheit. –

Words from the mouth of a man are deep waters. And the fountain of wisdom is a torrent overflowing.

5 Es ist ein übel Ding, Partei für den Schuldigen zu nehmen, so daß man den, der recht hat, im Gericht unterliegen läßt. –

It is not good to accept the character of the impious, so as to turn away from true judgment.

6 Die Lippen des Toren führen Streit herbei, und sein Mund ruft nach Stockschlägen. –

The lips of the foolish meddle in disputes. And his mouth provokes conflicts.

7 Dem Toren bringt sein Mund Verderben, und seine Lippen werden zum Fallstrick für sein Leben. –

The mouth of the foolish is his destruction, and his own lips are the ruin of his soul.

8 Die Worte des Ohrenbläsers sind wie Leckerbissen, die in das Innerste des Leibes hinabgleiten. –

The words of the double-tongued seem simple. And they reach even to the interior of the gut. Fear casts down the lazy, but the souls of the effeminate shall go hungry.

9 Schon wer sich lässig bei seiner Arbeit zeigt, ist ein Bruder dessen, der (sein Vermögen) zugrunde richtet. –

Whoever is dissolute and slack in his work is the brother of him who wastes his own works.

10 Ein fester Turm ist der Name des HERRN; in diesen flüchtet sich der Gerechte und ist in Sicherheit. –

The name of the Lord is a very strong tower. The just one rushes to it, and he shall be exalted.

11 Das Vermögen des Reichen ist für ihn eine feste Burg und gleich einer hohen Mauer – in seiner Einbildung. –

The substance of the wealthy is the city of his strength, and it is like a strong wall encircling him.

12 Vor dem Sturz ist das Herz eines Menschen hochmütig, aber vor der Ehre schreitet die Demut einher. –

The heart of a man is exalted before it is crushed and humbled before it is glorified.

13 Wenn jemand Antwort gibt, ehe er (recht) gehört hat, so gilt ihm das als Unverstand und Schande. –

Whoever responds before he listens, demonstrates himself to be foolish and deserving of confusion.

14 Ein männlicher Mut erträgt sein Leiden; aber ein bedrücktes Gemüt – wer kann das ertragen? –

The spirit of a man sustains his weakness. Yet who can sustain a spirit that is easily angered?

15 Ein verständiges Herz erwirbt Weisheit, und das Ohr des Weisen trachtet nach Erkenntnis. –

A prudent heart shall possess knowledge. And the ear of the wise seeks doctrine.

16 Geschenke öffnen einem Menschen Tür und Tor und verschaffen ihm Zutritt zu den Großen. –

A man’s gift expands his way and makes space for him before leaders.

17 Recht hat, wer als der erste in einer Streitsache auftritt; wenn dann aber der andere kommt, so widerlegt er ihn. –

The just is the first accuser of himself; his friend arrives and shall investigate him.

18 Das Los schlichtet Streitigkeiten und entscheidet zwischen Starken. –

Casting a lot suppresses contentions and passes judgment, even among the powerful.

19 Ein Bruder, gegen den man treulos gehandelt hat, leistet stärkeren Widerstand als eine feste Stadt, und Zerwürfnisse sind wie der Riegel einer Burg. –

A brother who is helped by a brother is like a reinforced city, and judgments are like the bars of cities.

20 Jeder bekommt die Frucht seines Mundes sattsam zu schmecken: den Ertrag seiner Lippen muß er auskosten. –

From the fruit of a man’s mouth shall his belly be filled. And the harvest of his own lips shall satisfy him.

21 Tod und Leben stehen in der Gewalt der Zunge, und wer sie viel gebraucht, wird das, was sie anrichtet, zu schmecken bekommen. –

Death and life are in the power of the tongue. Whoever values it shall eat from its fruits.

22 Wer ein (gutes) Eheweib gefunden, hat etwas Vortreffliches gefunden und ein Gnadengeschenk vom HERRN erhalten. –

He who has found a good wife has found goodness, and he shall draw contentment from the Lord. He who expels a good wife expels goodness. But he who holds on to an adulteress is foolish and impious.

23 Unterwürfige Bitten spricht der Arme aus, aber der Reiche antwortet mit Härte. –

The poor will speak with supplications. And the rich will express themselves roughly.

24 Gar manche Freunde gereichen zum Verderben; doch mancher Freund ist anhänglicher als ein Bruder.

A man amiable to society shall be more friendly than a brother.
