4 Mose 24

1 Da Bileam aber erkannte, daß es der Wille des HERRN war, Israel zu segnen, ging er nicht, wie die vorigen Male, auf Wahrzeichen aus, sondern wandte sein Gesicht nach der Wüste hin.

When Balaam saw that the Lord wanted to bless Israel, he chose not to use divination as he had previously. Instead he turned towards the desert,

2 Als er nun seine Augen aufschlug und Israel nach seinen Stämmen gelagert sah, da kam der Geist Gottes über ihn,

and as he looked at Israel camped there according to their respective tribes, the Spirit of God came on him.

3 und er trug seinen Spruch folgendermaßen vor: »So spricht Bileam, der Sohn Beors, und so spricht der Mann, dessen Auge geschlossen ist;

He gave a declaration, saying:

4 so spricht der, der Gottes Worte vernimmt und die Gedanken des Höchsten kennt, der die Offenbarungen des Allmächtigen schaut, der hingesunken ist und dessen Augen enthüllt sind:

“This is the prophecy of Balaam, son of Beor, the prophecy of a man who sees with eyes are wide open, the prophecy of one who hears the words of God, who sees the vision given by Almighty, who bows down in respect with open eyes.

5 Wie schön sind deine Zelte, Jakob, deine Wohnungen, Israel!

How well set out your tents are, Jacob; the places where you live, Israel!

6 Wie Täler, die sich weithin dehnen, wie Gärten an einem Strom, wie Aloebäume, die der HERR gepflanzt, wie Zedern am Wasser!

They look like wooded valleys, like gardens beside a river, like aloe trees the Lord has planted, like cedars at the water's edge.

7 Wasser rinnt aus seinen Eimern, und seine Saat ist reichlich getränkt. Sein König ist mächtiger als Agag, und sein Königtum steigt stolz empor.

The Israelites will pour out bucketfuls of water; their descendants will have plenty of water. Their king will be greater than King Agag; their kingdom will be glorious.

8 Gott, der aus Ägypten es geführt, ist ihm wie die Hörner eines Wildstiers. Es frißt die ihm feindlichen Völker und zermalmt ihre Gebeine, es zerschmettert sie mit seinen Pfeilen.

God led them out of Egypt with great power, as strong as an ox, destroying enemy nations, breaking their bones, piercing them with arrows.

9 Es hat sich hingestreckt, liegt da wie ein Leu und wie eine Löwin: wer will es aufstören? Wer dich segnet, ist gesegnet, und wer dir flucht, ist verflucht!«

They are like a lion that crouches and lies down. They are like a lioness that nobody dares to disturb. Those who bless you will be blessed; those who curse you will be cursed.”

10 Da geriet Balak in Zorn gegen Bileam, so daß er die Hände zusammenschlug. Dann sagte Balak zu Bileam: »Um meine Feinde zu verfluchen, habe ich dich holen lassen, und nun hast du sie sogar gesegnet, nun schon dreimal!

Balak got angry with Balaam, and beat his fists together. He told Balaam, “I brought you here to curse my enemies, and now look! You keep on blessing them, doing it three times.

11 Kehre jetzt nur sofort in deine Heimat zurück! Ich hatte gedacht, dich hoch zu ehren; doch nun hat der HERR dich um die Ehre gebracht!«

Leave right now! Go home! I promised to pay you well, but the Lord has made sure you wouldn't receive any payment.”

12 Da antwortete Bileam dem Balak: »Habe ich nicht schon deinen Boten, die du an mich gesandt hattest, ausdrücklich erklärt:

But Balaam said to Balak, “Didn't I already explain to the messengers you sent

13 ›Wenn Balak mir auch sein ganzes Haus voll Silber und Gold geben wollte, so vermöchte ich doch den Befehl des HERRN nicht zu übertreten, um nach eigenem Belieben etwas zu tun, sei es zum Guten oder zum Bösen; sondern nur, was der HERR mir eingäbe, das würde ich kundtun‹?

that even if you gave me your whole palace full of silver and gold, I couldn't do anything I wanted or disobey the command of the Lord my God in any way? I can only say what the Lord tells me.

14 Weil ich denn jetzt zu meinem Volk zurückkehre, so komm: ich will dir verkünden, was dieses Volk deinem Volk in künftigen Zeiten antun wird!«

Listen! I'm going back home now to my own people, but first let me warn you what these Israelites are going to do to your people in the future.”

15 Hierauf trug er seinen Spruch folgendermaßen vor: »So spricht Bileam, der Sohn Beors, und so spricht der Mann, dessen Auge geschlossen ist;

Then Balaam gave a declaration, saying, “This is the prophecy of Balaam, son of Beor, the prophecy of a man whose eyes are wide open

16 So spricht der, welcher Gottes Worte vernimmt und die Gedanken des Höchsten kennt, der die Offenbarungen des Allmächtigen schaut, der hingesunken ist und dessen Augen enthüllt sind:

the prophecy of one who hears the words of God, who receives knowledge from the Most High, who sees the vision given by Almighty, who bows down in respect with open eyes.

17 Ich sehe ihn, doch nicht schon jetzt, ich gewahre ihn, doch noch nicht in der Nähe; es geht ein Stern aus Jakob auf, und ein Herrscherstab ersteht aus Israel, der zerschmettert die Schläfen Moabs, den Scheitel aller Söhne Seths.

I see him, but this isn't now. I observe him, but this isn't close at hand. In the future a leader like a star will come from Jacob, a ruler with a scepter will come to power from Israel. He will crush the heads of the Moabites, and destroy all the people of Seth.

18 Und Edom wird sein Eigentum werden und Seir sein Eigentum, sie, seine Feinde; Israel aber wird große Taten verrichten.

The country of Edom will be conquered, his enemy Seir will be conquered, and the Israelites will be victorious.

19 Von Jakob wird der Herrscher ausgehn und Entronnene vertilgen aus den Städten.«

A ruler from Jacob will come and destroy those left in the city.”

20 Als er dann die Amalekiter erblickte, trug er seinen Spruch folgendermaßen vor: »Der Völker erstes ist Amalek, doch sein Ende fällt dem Untergang anheim!«

Balaam turned his attention to the Amalekites and gave this declaration about them, saying, “Amalek was first among the nations, but they will end up being destroyed.”

21 Als er dann die Keniter erblickte, trug er seinen Spruch folgendermaßen vor: »Fest ist dein Wohnsitz, (Kain, ) und auf Felsen gebaut dein Nest;

He turned his attention to the Kenites and gave this declaration about them, saying, “Where you live is safe and secure, like a nest on a cliff-face.

22 gleichwohl ist Kain dem Untergang geweiht: wie lange noch, so führt Assur dich in Gefangenschaft!«

But Kain will be burned down when Assyria conquers you.”

23 Dann trug er nochmals seinen Spruch folgendermaßen vor: »Wehe! Wer wird am Leben bleiben, wenn Gott dies eintreten läßt?

Then Balaam gave another declaration, saying, “It's a tragedy! Who can survive when God does this?

24 Denn Schiffe kommen vom Strand der Kittäer, die demütigen Assur und demütigen Eber; doch auch der wird dem Untergang verfallen!«

Ships will be sent from Cyprus to attack Assyria and Eber, but they too will be permanently destroyed.”

25 Hierauf machte Bileam sich auf den Weg und kehrte in seine Heimat zurück; und auch Balak ging seines Weges.

Then Balaam left and returned to his own country, and Balak left too.
