Nehemia 9

1 Am vierundzwanzigsten Tage desselben Monats aber versammelten sich die Israeliten unter Fasten, und zwar in Trauergewändern und mit Erde auf dem Haupte.

In the foure and twentieth day of this moneth the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackecloth, and earth vpon them.

2 Nachdem sich dann die Vollisraeliten von allen Fremden abgesondert hatten, traten sie hin und legten ein Bekenntnis ihrer Sünden und der Verschuldungen ihrer Väter ab.

(And they that were of the seede of Israel were separated from all the strangers) and they stoode and confessed their sinnes and the iniquities of their fathers.

3 Hierauf erhoben sie sich auf der Stelle, wo sie sich befanden, und man las aus dem Gesetzbuche des HERRN, ihres Gottes, einen Vierteltag lang vor und sprach dann drei weitere Stunden lang Bußgebete, während sie sich vor dem HERRN, ihrem Gott, niedergeworfen hatten.

And they stood vp in their place and read in the booke of the Lawe of the Lord their GOD foure times on the day, and they confessed and worshipped the Lord their God foure times.

4 Darauf traten Jesua und Bani, Kadmiel, Sebanja, Bunni, Serabja, Bani und Kenani auf den erhöhten Platz der Leviten hinauf und riefen den HERRN, ihren Gott, mit lauter Stimme an.

Then stoode vp vpon the staires of the Leuites Ieshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani, and cryed with a loud voyce vnto the Lord their God.

5 Alsdann hielten die Leviten Jesua und Kadmiel, Bani, Hasabneja, Serebja, Hodija, Sebanja und Pethahja folgende Ansprache: »Ach! Preiset den HERRN, euren Gott, von Ewigkeit zu Ewigkeit! Und man preise deinen herrlichen Namen, der über allen Lobpreis und Ruhm erhaben ist!

And the Leuites said, euen Ieshua and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodiiah, Shebaniah and Pethahiah, Stande vp, and praise the Lord your God for euer, and euer, and let them praise thy glorious Name, O God, which excelleth aboue all thankesgiuing and praise.

6 Du bist es, der da ist, HERR, du allein! Du bist es, der den Himmel und den obersten Himmel samt ihrem ganzen Heer geschaffen hat, die Erde mit allem, was auf ihr ist, die Meere mit allem, was in ihnen ist; und du bist es, der dies alles am Leben erhält und den das himmlische Heer anbetet.

Thou art Lord alone: thou hast made heauen, and the heauen of all heauens, with all their hoste, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and al that are in them, and thou preseruest them all, and the host of the heauen worshippeth thee.

7 Du, HERR, bist der Gott, der Abram erwählt, der ihn aus Ur in Chaldäa hat auswandern lassen und ihm den Namen Abraham gegeben hat.

Thou art, O Lord, the God, that hast chosen Abram, and broughtest him out of Vr in Caldea, and madest his name Abraham,

8 Nachdem du sein Herz treu gegen dich erfunden hattest, hast du mit ihm den Bund geschlossen, das Land der Kanaanäer, Hethiter, Amoriter, Pherissiter, Jebusiter und Girgasiter, dies Land seinen Nachkommen geben zu wollen; und du hast dein Wort gehalten, denn du bist gerecht.

And foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a couenant with him, to giue vnto his seede the lande of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, and Perizzites, and Iebusites, and Girgashites, and hast performed thy wordes, because thou art iust.

9 Als du dann das Elend unserer Väter in Ägypten sahst und ihr Geschrei am Schilfmeere hörtest,

Thou hast also considered the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heard their cry by the red Sea,

10 hast du Zeichen und Wunder am Pharao, an allen seinen Dienern und an dem ganzen Volke seines Landes getan; denn du hattest erkannt, daß jene in Vermessenheit gegen sie gehandelt hatten, und du hast dir einen Namen gemacht, wie er heute noch groß dasteht.

And shewed tokens and wonders vpon Pharaoh, and on all his seruants, and on all the people of his land: for thou knewest that they dealt proudely against them: therefore thou madest thee a Name, as appeareth this day.

11 Das Meer hast du vor ihnen gespalten, so daß sie trockenen Fußes mitten durch das Meer ziehen konnten; ihre Verfolger aber hast du in die Tiefen geschleudert wie einen Stein in gewaltige Fluten.

For thou didest breake vp the Sea before them, and they went through the middes of the Sea on dry lande: and those that pursued them, hast thou cast into the bottomes as a stone, in the mightie waters:

12 Durch eine Wolkensäule hast du sie bei Tage geleitet und durch eine Feuersäule bei Nacht, um ihnen den Weg zu erleuchten, auf dem sie ziehen sollten.

And leddest them in the day with a pillar of a cloude, and in the night with a pillar of fire to giue them light in the way that they went.

13 Auf den Berg Sinai bist du hinabgestiegen und hast vom Himmel her mit ihnen geredet und ihnen richtige Weisungen und zuverlässige Gesetze, gute Satzungen und Gebote gegeben.

Thou camest downe also vpon mount Sinai, and spakest vnto them from heauen, and gauest them right iudgements, and true lawes, ordinances and good commandements,

14 Auch deinen heiligen Sabbat hast du ihnen kundgetan und ihnen Gebote, Satzungen und das Gesetz durch deinen Knecht Mose verordnet.

And declaredst vnto them thine holy Sabbath, and commandedst them precepts, and ordinances, and lawes, by the hande of Moses thy seruant:

15 Brot vom Himmel hast du ihnen für ihren Hunger gegeben und Wasser aus dem Felsen ihnen für ihren Durst hervorfließen lassen und hast ihnen geboten, in das Land einzuziehen, dessen Besitz du ihnen mit erhobener Hand zugeschworen hattest.«

And gauest them bread from heauen for their hunger, and broughtest forth water for them out of the rocke for their thirst: and promisedst them that they shoulde goe in, and take possession of the land: for the which thou haddest lift vp thine hand for to giue them.

16 »Sie aber, unsere Väter, waren übermütig und halsstarrig, so daß sie auf deine Gebote nicht hörten;

But they and our fathers behaued them selues proudely, and hardened their neck, so that they hearkened not vnto thy commandements,

17 sie weigerten sich vielmehr zu gehorchen und gedachten deiner Wunder nicht mehr, die du an ihnen getan hattest: sie wurden halsstarrig und setzten es sich in ihrer Widerspenstigkeit in den Kopf, nach Ägypten zu ihrem Sklavendienst zurückzukehren. Doch du bist ein Gott der Vergebung, gnädig und barmherzig, langmütig und reich an Güte: du hast sie nicht verlassen.

But refused to obey, and would not remember thy marueilous works that thou haddest done for them, but hardened their neckes, and had in their heads to returne to their bondage by their rebellion: but thou, O God of mercies, gratious and full of compassion, of long suffring and of great mercie, yet forsookest them not.

18 Sogar als sie sich ein gegossenes Stierbild gemacht hatten und ausriefen: ›Dies ist dein Gott, der dich aus Ägypten geführt hat!‹, und als sie arge Lästerdinge verübten,

Moreouer, when they made them a molten calfe (and said, This is thy God that brought thee vp out of the land of Egypt) and committed great blasphemies,

19 hast du sie doch nach deiner großen Barmherzigkeit in der Wüste nicht verlassen; nein, die Wolkensäule wich nicht von ihnen bei Tage, die sie auf dem Wege führen sollte, und die Feuersäule nicht bei Nacht, um ihnen den Weg zu erleuchten, auf dem sie ziehen sollten.

Yet thou for thy great mercies forsookest them not in the wildernesse: the pillar of the cloude departed not from them by day to leade them the way, neither the pillar of fire by night, to shew them light, and the way whereby they should goe.

20 Du gabst ihnen auch deinen guten Geist, um sie zu unterweisen; du versagtest ihrem Munde dein Manna nicht und gabst ihnen Wasser für ihren Durst.

Thou gauest also thy good Spirite to instruct them, and withheldest not thy MAN from their mouth, and gauest them water for their thirst.

21 Vierzig Jahre lang versorgtest du sie in der Wüste, so daß sie keinen Mangel litten; ihre Kleider nutzten sich nicht ab, und ihre Füße schwollen nicht an.

Thou didest also feede them fourtie yeres in ye wildernes: they lacked nothing: their clothes waxed not old, and their feete swelled not.

22 Dazu gabst du ihnen Königreiche und Völker zum Besitz und teiltest ihnen Gebiet für Gebiet zu, so daß sie das Land Sihons, des Königs von Hesbon, und das Land Ogs, des Königs von Basan, in Besitz nahmen.

And thou gauest them kingdomes and people, and scatteredst them into corners: so they possessed the land of Sihon and the land of ye King of Heshbon, and the land of Og King of Bashan.

23 Ihre Söhne ließest du zahlreich werden wie die Sterne am Himmel und brachtest sie in das Land, in das sie, wie du ihren Vätern verheißen hattest, eindringen sollten, um es in Besitz zu nehmen.

And thou diddest multiplie their children, like the starres of the heauen, and broughtest them into the lande, whereof thou haddest spoken vnto their fathers, that they should goe, and possesse it.

24 So zogen denn ihre Söhne in das Land ein und nahmen es in Besitz, und du warfst die Bewohner des Landes, die Kanaanäer, vor ihnen nieder und ließest sie in ihre Gewalt fallen, sowohl ihre Könige als auch die Völkerschaften des Landes, damit sie mit ihnen nach Belieben verfahren könnten.

So the children went in, and possessed the lande, and thou subduedst before them the inhabitants of the lande, euen the Canaanites, and gauest them into their handes, with their Kings and the people of the lande, that they might do with them what they would.

25 So eroberten sie denn feste Städte und ein fruchtbares Land und nahmen Häuser in Besitz, die mit Gütern aller Art angefüllt waren, ausgehauene Brunnen, Weinberge und Ölbaumgärten und Obstbäume in Menge; und sie aßen und wurden satt und fett und ließen sich’s wohl sein im Genuß der Fülle deiner Güter.«

And they tooke their strong cities and the fat lande, and possessed houses, full of all goods, cisternes digged out, vineyardes, and oliues, and trees for foode in abundance, and they did eate, and were filled, and became fat, and liued in pleasure through thy great goodnesse.

26 »Aber sie wurden ungehorsam und lehnten sich gegen dich auf; sie kehrten deinem Gesetz den Rücken; sie ermordeten deine Propheten, die ihnen ins Gewissen redeten, um sie zu dir zurückzuführen, und verübten arge Lästerdinge.

Yet they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy Lawe behinde their backes, and slewe thy Prophets (which protested among them to turne them vnto thee) and committed great blasphemies.

27 Darum gabst du sie der Gewalt ihrer Feinde preis, daß diese sie bedrängten. Wenn sie dann aber in ihrer Not zu dir schrien, erhörtest du sie vom Himmel her und ließest ihnen nach deiner großen Barmherzigkeit Retter erstehen, die sie aus der Gewalt ihrer Bedränger erretteten.

Therefore thou deliueredst them into the hande of their enemies that vexed them: yet in the time of their affliction, when they cryed vnto thee, thou heardest them from the heauen, and through thy great mercies thou gauest them sauiours, who saued them out of the hande of their aduersaries.

28 Sobald sie aber Ruhe hatten, fingen sie wieder an, Böses vor dir zu tun; und wenn du sie dann wieder in die Gewalt ihrer Feinde fallen ließest, die sie unter ihre Herrschaft knechteten, und sie aufs neue zu dir schrien, erhörtest du sie vom Himmel her und errettetest sie oftmals in deiner großen Barmherzigkeit.

But when they had rest, they returned to doe euill before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the hande of their enemies, so that they had the dominion ouer them, yet when they conuerted and cryed vnto thee, thou heardest them from heauen, and deliueredst them according to thy great mercies many times,

29 Obgleich du sie aber ernstlich warnen ließest, um sie zu deinem Gesetz zurückzuführen, waren sie doch trotzig und gehorchten deinen Geboten nicht, sondern sündigten gegen deine Verordnungen, obwohl der Mensch doch durch deren Beobachtung sein Leben bewahrt; sie wollten sich kein Joch auf ihre Schulter legen lassen und waren halsstarrig, so daß sie nicht gehorchten.

And protestedst among them that thou mightest bring them againe vnto thy Lawe: but they behaued them selues proudely, and hearkened not vnto thy commandements, but sinned against thy iudgements (which a man should doe and liue in them) and pulled away the shoulder, and were stiffenecked, and woulde not heare.

30 Obgleich du nun noch viele Jahre lang Geduld mit ihnen hattest und sie durch deinen Geist, durch deine Propheten, ernstlich warnen ließest, achteten sie doch nicht darauf. Da hast du sie in die Gewalt der Völker in den heidnischen Ländern fallen lassen,

Yet thou diddest forbeare them many yeeres, and protestedst among them by thy Spirite, euen by the hande of thy Prophets, but they woulde not heare: therefore gauest thou them into the hande of the people of the lands.

31 aber sie trotzdem in deiner großen Barmherzigkeit nicht völlig vernichtet und sie nicht verlassen; denn du bist ein gnädiger und barmherziger Gott.«

Yet for thy great mercies thou hast not consumed them, neither forsaken them: for thou art a gracious and mercifull God.

32 »Und nun, unser Gott, du großer, starker und furchtbarer Gott, der du den Bund und die Gnade bewahrst: achte nicht gering alle die Leiden, die uns betroffen haben, unsere Könige und Obersten, unsere Priester und Propheten, unsere Väter und dein ganzes Volk seit der Zeit der Assyrerkönige bis auf diesen Tag!

Nowe therefore our God, thou great God, mightie and terrible, that keepest couenant and mercie, let not all the affliction that hath come vnto vs, seeme a litle before thee, that is, to our Kings, to our princes, and to our Priests, and to our Prophets, and to our fathers, and to all thy people since the time of the Kings of Asshur vnto this day.

33 Du bist allerdings gerecht gewesen bei allem, was uns widerfahren ist; denn du hast stets Treue geübt, wir aber haben gottlos gehandelt.

Surely thou art iust in all that is come vpon vs: for thou hast dealt truely, but we haue done wickedly.

34 Auch unsere Könige und Obersten, unsere Priester und unsere Väter haben dein Gesetz nicht gehalten und deine Gebote und ernstlichen Warnungen, die du ihnen hast zukommen lassen, unbeachtet gelassen.

And our kings and our princes, our Priests and our fathers haue not done thy Lawe, nor regarded thy commandements nor thy protestations, wherewith thou hast protested among them.

35 Weil sie trotz ihres Königtums und trotz der Fülle von Wohltaten, die du ihnen erwiesen, und trotz des weiten und fruchtbaren Landes, das du ihnen zugeteilt hattest, dir nicht gedient und sich nicht von ihrem bösen Tun bekehrt haben, –

And they haue not serued thee in their kingdome, and in thy great goodnesse that thou shewedst vnto them, and in the large and fat lande which thou diddest set before them, and haue not conuerted from their euill workes.

36 ja, ebendarum sind wir heute Knechte, und das Land, das du unsern Vätern geschenkt hast, damit sie seine Früchte und Güter genössen: ach, wir sind Knechte in ihm!

Beholde, we are seruants this day, and the lande that thou gauest vnto our fathers, to eate the fruite thereof, and the goodnesse thereof, beholde, we are seruants therein.

37 Seinen reichen Ertrag liefert es den Königen, die du um unserer Sünden willen über uns gesetzt hast, und sie herrschen über unsere Leiber und über unser Vieh nach ihrem Gutdünken, so daß wir uns in großer Not befinden.«

And it yeeldeth much fruit vnto the kings whom thou hast set ouer vs, because of our sinnes: and they haue dominion ouer our bodyes and ouer our cattell at their pleasure, and we are in great affliction.

38 Auf Grund aller dieser Umstände schließen wir einen festen Vertrag und fertigen ihn schriftlich aus; und auf der untersiegelten Urkunde stehen die Namen unserer Obersten, unserer Leviten und unserer Priester;

Now because of all this we make a sure couenant, and write it, and our princes, our Leuites and our Priestes seale vnto it.
