Matthaeus 5
1 Als Jesus nun die Volksscharen sah, ging er ins Gebirge hinauf, und nachdem er sich dort gesetzt hatte, traten seine Jünger zu ihm.
When Jesus saw the crowds following him he went up a mountain. There he sat down together with his disciples.
2 Da tat er seinen Mund auf und lehrte sie mit den Worten:
He began teaching them, saying:
3 »Selig sind die geistlich Armen, denn ihnen wird das Himmelreich zuteil!
“Blessed are those who recognize they are spiritually poor, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.
4 Selig sind die Bekümmerten, denn sie werden getröstet werden! –
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
5 Selig sind die Sanftmütigen, denn sie werden das Land ererben!
Blessed are those who are kind for they will own the whole world.
6 Selig sind, die nach der Gerechtigkeit hungern und dürsten, denn sie werden gesättigt werden! –
Blessed are those whose greatest desire is to do what is right, for they will be satisfied.
7 Selig sind die Barmherzigen, denn sie werden Barmherzigkeit erlangen!
Blessed are those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
8 Selig sind, die reinen Herzens sind, denn sie werden Gott schauen!
Blessed are those who have pure minds, for they will see God.
9 Selig sind die Friedfertigen, denn sie werden Söhne Gottes heißen! –
Blessed are those who work to bring peace, for they will be called children of God.
10 Selig sind, die um der Gerechtigkeit willen Verfolgung erleiden, denn ihnen wird das Himmelreich zuteil!
Blessed are those persecuted for what is right, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.
11 Selig seid ihr, wenn man euch um meinetwillen schmäht und verfolgt und euch lügnerisch alles Böse nachredet!
Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and accuse you of all kinds of evil things because of me.
12 Freuet euch darüber und jubelt, denn euer Lohn ist groß im Himmel! Ebenso hat man ja auch die Propheten vor euch verfolgt.«
Be glad, be really glad, for you will receive a great reward in heaven—for they persecuted the prophets who came before you in just the same way.
13 »Ihr seid das Salz der Erde! Wenn aber das Salz fade geworden ist, womit soll es wieder gesalzen werden? Es taugt zu nichts mehr, als aus dem Hause geworfen und von den Leuten zertreten zu werden. –
You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt becomes tasteless, how can you make it salty again? It's good for nothing, so it's thrown out and trodden down.
14 Ihr seid das Licht der Welt! Eine Stadt, die oben auf einem Berge liegt, kann nicht verborgen bleiben.
You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill can't be hidden.
15 Man zündet auch nicht ein Licht an und stellt es unter den Scheffel, sondern auf den Leuchter: dann leuchtet es allen, die im Hause sind.
No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a bucket. No, it's placed on a lamp-stand and it provides light to everyone in the house.
16 Ebenso soll auch euer Licht vor den Menschen leuchten, damit sie eure guten Werke sehen und euren Vater, der im Himmel ist, preisen.«
In the same way you should let your light shine before everyone so they can see the good things you do and praise your heavenly Father.
17 »Denkt nicht, daß ich gekommen sei, das Gesetz oder die Propheten aufzulösen! Ich bin nicht gekommen aufzulösen, sondern zu erfüllen.
Don't think I came to abolish the law or the writings of the prophets. I didn't come to abolish them, but to fulfill them.
18 Denn wahrlich ich sage euch: Bis Himmel und Erde vergehen, wird vom Gesetz nicht ein einziges Jota und kein Strichlein vergehen, bis alles in Erfüllung gegangen ist.
I assure you, until heaven and earth come to an end, not a single letter, not a single dot of the law will come to an end before everything is fulfilled.
19 Wer also ein einziges von diesen Geboten – und wäre es das geringste – auflöst und die Menschen demgemäß lehrt, der wird der Geringste im Himmelreich heißen; wer sie aber tut und (die Menschen) so lehrt, der wird groß im Himmelreich heißen.
So whoever disregards the least important commandment, and teaches people to do so, will be called the least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever practices and teaches the commandments will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 Denn ich sage euch: Wenn es mit eurer Gerechtigkeit nicht weit besser bestellt ist als bei den Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäern, so werdet ihr nimmermehr ins Himmelreich eingehen!«
I tell you, unless your moral rightness is more than that of the religious teachers and the Pharisees, you can never enter the kingdom of heaven.
21 »Ihr habt gehört, daß den Alten geboten worden ist: ›Du sollst nicht töten‹, wer aber tötet, soll dem Gericht verfallen sein.
You've heard that the law said to the people of long ago: ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who commits murder will be condemned as guilty.’
22 Ich dagegen sage euch: Wer seinem Bruder auch nur zürnt, der soll dem Gericht verfallen sein; und wer zu seinem Bruder ›Dummkopf‹ sagt, soll dem Hohen Rat verfallen sein; und wer ›du Narr‹ zu ihm sagt, soll der Feuerhölle verfallen sein. (Geenna g1067)
But I tell you, anyone who is angry with his brother will be condemned as guilty. Whoever calls his brother an idiot has to answer to the council, but whoever verbally abuses others is liable to the fire of judgment. (Geenna g1067)
23 Wenn du also deine Opfergabe zum Altar bringst und dich dort erinnerst, daß dein Bruder etwas gegen dich hat,
If you're at the altar making an offering, and remember that your brother has something against you,
24 so laß deine Gabe dort vor dem Altar und gehe zunächst hin und versöhne dich mit deinem Bruder; alsdann geh hin und opfere deine Gabe!
leave your offering on the altar and go and make peace with him first, and afterwards come back and make your offering.
25 Sei zum Vergleich mit deinem Widersacher ohne Säumen bereit, solange du mit ihm noch auf dem Wege (zum Richter) bist, damit dein Widersacher dich nicht dem Richter übergibt und der Richter dich dem Gerichtsdiener (überantwortet) und du ins Gefängnis gesetzt wirst.
While you're on the way to court with your opponent, make sure you settle things quickly. Otherwise your opponent might hand you over to the judge, and the judge will hand you over to the court official, and you will be thrown into jail.
26 Wahrlich ich sage dir: Du wirst von dort sicherlich nicht herauskommen, bis du den letzten Pfennig bezahlt hast.
I tell you the truth: you won't get out of there until you've paid every last penny.
27 Ihr habt gehört, daß (den Alten) geboten worden ist: ›Du sollst nicht ehebrechen!‹
You've heard that the law said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’
28 Ich dagegen sage euch: Wer eine Ehefrau auch nur mit Begehrlichkeit anblickt, hat damit schon in seinem Herzen Ehebruch an ihr begangen.
But I tell you that everyone who looks lustfully at a woman has already committed adultery with her in his mind.
29 Wenn dich also dein rechtes Auge ärgert, so reiß es aus und wirf es weg von dir; denn es ist besser für dich, daß eines deiner Glieder (dir) verloren geht, als daß dein ganzer Leib in die Hölle geworfen wird. (Geenna g1067)
If your right eye leads you to sin, then tear it out and throw it away, because it's better to lose one part of your body than to have your whole body thrown into the fire of judgment. (Geenna g1067)
30 Und wenn deine rechte Hand dich ärgert, so haue sie ab und wirf sie weg von dir; denn es ist besser für dich, daß eines deiner Glieder (dir) verloren geht, als daß dein ganzer Leib in die Hölle geworfen wird. – (Geenna g1067)
If your right hand leads you to sin, then cut it off and throw it away, for it's better for you to lose one of your limbs than for your whole body to go into the fire of judgment. (Geenna g1067)
31 Ferner ist (zu den Alten) gesagt worden: ›Wer seine Ehefrau entläßt, der soll ihr einen Scheidebrief geben!‹
The law also said, ‘If a man divorces his wife, he should give her a certificate of divorce.’
32 Ich dagegen sage euch: Wer sich von seiner Frau scheidet – außer auf Grund von Unzucht –, der verschuldet es, daß dann Ehebruch mit ihr verübt wird; und wer eine entlassene Frau heiratet, der begeht Ehebruch.
But I tell you that any man who divorces his wife except for sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
33 Ihr habt weiter gehört, daß den Alten geboten worden ist: ›Du sollst nicht falsch schwören‹, ›sollst aber dem Herrn deine Eide erfüllen!‹
And again, you've heard that the law said to the people of long ago, ‘You shall not perjure yourself. Instead make sure you keep the oaths you swear to the Lord.’
34 Ich dagegen sage euch: Ihr sollt überhaupt nicht schwören, weder beim Himmel, denn er ist Gottes Thron,
But I tell you, don't swear at all. Don't swear by heaven, because it's the throne of God.
35 noch bei der Erde, denn sie ist der Schemel seiner Füße, noch bei Jerusalem, denn es ist die Stadt des großen Königs.
Don't swear by the earth, because it's God's footstool. Don't swear by Jerusalem, because it's the city of the great King.
36 Auch bei deinem Haupte sollst du nicht schwören, denn du vermagst kein einziges Haar weiß oder schwarz zu machen.
Don't even swear by your head, because you're not able to make a single hair white or black.
37 Eure Rede sei vielmehr ›ja ja – nein nein‹; jeder weitere Zusatz ist vom Übel.
Simply say yes or no—more than this comes from the evil one.
38 Ihr habt gehört, daß (den Alten) geboten worden ist: ›Auge um Auge und Zahn um Zahn!‹
You've heard that the law said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’
39 Ich dagegen sage euch: Ihr sollt dem Bösen keinen Widerstand leisten; sondern wer dich auf die rechte Wange schlägt, dem halte auch die andere hin,
But I tell you, don't resist someone who is evil. If someone slaps you on the right cheek, turn the other cheek to them as well.
40 und wer mit dir einen Rechtsstreit anfangen und dir den Rock nehmen will, dem überlaß auch noch den Mantel,
If someone wants to sue you in court and takes your shirt, give them your coat too.
41 und wer dich zu einer Meile Weges nötigt, mit dem gehe zwei.
If someone demands that you go one mile, go with them two.
42 Wer dich (um etwas) bittet, dem gib, und wer (Geld) von dir borgen will, den weise nicht ab!
Give to those who ask you, and don't turn away those who want to borrow from you.
43 Ihr habt gehört, daß (den Alten) geboten worden ist; ›Du sollst deinen Nächsten lieben, und deinen Feind hassen!‹
You've heard that the law said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’
44 Ich dagegen sage euch: Liebet eure Feinde und betet für eure Verfolger,
But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
45 damit ihr euch als Söhne eures himmlischen Vaters erweist. Denn er läßt seine Sonne über Böse und Gute aufgehen und läßt regnen auf Gerechte und Ungerechte.
so you may become children of your heavenly Father. For his sun shines on both the good and the bad; and he makes the rain fall on both those who do right and those who do wrong.
46 Denn wenn ihr (nur) die liebt, die euch lieben, welches Verdienst habt ihr da? Tun das nicht auch die Zöllner?
For if you only love those who love you, what reward do you have? Don't even the tax-collectors do that?
47 Und wenn ihr nur eure Freunde grüßt, was tut ihr da Besonderes? Tun das nicht auch die Heiden?
If you only speak kindly to your family, what more are you doing than anyone else? Even the heathen do that!
48 Darum sollt ihr vollkommen sein, wie euer himmlischer Vater vollkommen ist.«
Grow up and become completely trustworthy, just as your heavenly Father is trustworthy.
