Richter 21
1 Die Männer von Israel hatten aber in Mizpa folgenden feierlichen Schwur abgelegt: »Keiner von uns darf seine Tochter einem Benjaminiten zur Frau geben!«
Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpah, saying, Not any of us shall give his daughter unto Benjamin for wife.
2 Als nun das Volk nach Bethel gezogen war und dort bis zum Abend vor Gott (beim Heiligtum) verweilte, fingen sie an, laut zu weinen,
And the people came to Beth-el, and abode there till the evening, before God, and they lifted up their voices, and wept with a great lamentation;
3 und wehklagten: »Warum, o HERR, Gott Israels, ist dies in Israel geschehen, daß heute ein ganzer Stamm aus Israel fehlt!«
And they said, Wherefore, O Lord, God of Israel, is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be lacking this day out of Israel one tribe?
4 Am folgenden Tage aber in der Frühe baute das Volk dort einen Altar und brachte Brand- und Heilsopfer dar.
And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings.
5 Dann fragten die Israeliten: »Wer von allen Stämmen Israels ist nicht mit der Gemeinde zum HERRN hergekommen?« Man hatte nämlich in betreff eines jeden, der nicht zum HERRN nach Mizpa hinkommen würde, einen feierlichen Eid ausgesprochen des Inhalts: »Er muß unbedingt sterben.«
And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the Lord? For there had been taken the great oath concerning him that came not up to the Lord to Mizpah, saying, He shall surely be put to death.
6 Nun tat es aber den Israeliten um ihren Bruderstamm Benjamin leid, so daß sie klagten: »Heute ist ein ganzer Stamm von Israel abgehauen!
And the children of Israel felt regret for Benjamin their brother, and they said, One tribe hath this day been cut down from Israel.
7 Wie können wir nun den Übriggebliebenen zu Frauen verhelfen, da wir doch beim HERRN geschworen haben, daß wir ihnen keine von unsern Töchtern zu Frauen geben wollen?«
What shall we do as respecteth wives for those that remain, since we have sworn by the Lord that we will give none of our daughters unto them for wives?
8 Da fragten sie: »Ist etwa einer von den Stämmen Israels nicht zum HERRN nach Mizpa hinaufgekommen?« Da ergab es sich, daß aus Jabes in Gilead niemand ins Lager zur Versammlung gekommen war.
And they said, what one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up unto the Lord to Mizpah? And, behold, there had not come to the camp a man from Yabesh-gil'ad to the assembly.
9 Man hatte nämlich das Volk gemustert, und da stellte es sich heraus, daß von den Einwohnern von Jabes in Gilead keiner anwesend war.
For the people were numbered, and, behold, there was not present a man of the inhabitants of Yabesh-gil'ad.
10 Nun sandte die Volksgemeinde 12000 Mann von den tapfersten Männern dorthin mit dem Befehl: »Geht hin und erschlagt die Einwohner von Jabes in Gilead mit dem Schwerte, auch die Weiber und die Kinder!
And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand persons of the valiant men, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Yabesh-gil'ad with the edge of the sword, with the women and the children.
11 Verfahrt dabei aber so: an allen Männern sowie an allen weiblichen Personen, die schon mit Männern zu tun gehabt haben, sollt ihr den Blutbann vollstrecken (die Jungfrauen aber am Leben lassen und sie hierher ins Lager bringen)!«
And this is the thing that ye shall do, every male, and every woman that hath known [man] by lying with him, shall ye devote.
12 Sie fanden aber unter den Bewohnern von Jabes in Gilead vierhundert jungfräuliche Mädchen, die noch mit keinem Mann zu tun gehabt hatten; die brachten sie ins Lager nach Silo, das im Lande Kanaan liegt.
And they found among the inhabitants of Yabesh-gil'ad four hundred young virgins that had not known man by lying with any male: and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.
13 Hierauf sandte die ganze Volksgemeinde hin und verhandelte mit den Benjaminiten, die sich noch am Felsen Rimmon befanden, und ließ ihnen Sicherheit entbieten.
And the whole congregation sent and spoke to the children of Benjamin that were on the rock Rimmon, and offered them peace.
14 So kehrten denn die Benjaminiten damals zurück, und man gab ihnen die Mädchen, die man von den weiblichen Personen aus Jabes in Gilead am Leben gelassen hatte, zu Frauen; diese reichten jedoch für sie nicht aus.
And Benjamin returned at that time: and they gave unto them the wives whom they had saved alive out of the women of Yabesh-gil'ad; but they found not sufficient for them in this way.
15 Weil nun die Benjaminiten dem Volke leid taten, da der HERR einen Riß in den Stämmen Israels hatte entstehen lassen,
And the people felt regret for Benjamin; because that the Lord had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
16 sagten die Ältesten der Gemeinde: »Wie können wir den Übriggebliebenen zu Frauen verhelfen, da ja die Frauen aus Benjamin ausgerottet sind?«
And the elders of the congregation said, What shall we do for those that remain as respecteth wives; because the women have been destroyed out of Benjamin?
17 Da sagten sie: »Der Erbbesitz soll den Benjaminiten verbleiben, die mit dem Leben davongekommen sind, damit nicht ein Stamm aus Israel ausgetilgt wird.
And they said, Their inheritance must be secured for Benjamin, that not a tribe may be blotted out from Israel.
18 Wir aber können ihnen keine von unsern Töchtern zu Frauen geben, denn die Israeliten haben feierlich geschworen: ›Verflucht sei, wer seine Tochter einem Benjaminiten zur Frau gibt!‹«
Nevertheless we ourselves are not able to give them wives of our daughters; for the children of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin.
19 Da sagten sie: »Es findet bekanntlich alle Jahre ein Fest des HERRN in Silo statt (auf dem Platze) nördlich von Bethel, östlich von der Landstraße, die von Bethel nach Sichem hinaufführt, und südlich von Lebona.«
And they said, Behold, there is a feast of the Lord in Shiloh from year to year [at a place] which is on the north side of Beth-el, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Beth-el to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.
20 Da gaben sie den Benjaminiten folgende Weisung: »Geht hin und versteckt euch in den Weinbergen!
And they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go ye and lie in wait in the vineyards;
21 Wenn ihr dann die Mädchen von Silo herauskommen seht, um Reigentänze aufzuführen, so brecht aus den Weinbergen hervor und erhascht euch ein jeder sein Weib aus den Mädchen von Silo und kehrt mit ihr ins Land Benjamin zurück.
And look out, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh go out to dance in dances: then come ye forth out of the vineyards, and snatch you every man his wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go then to the land of Benjamin.
22 Wenn dann ihre Väter oder Brüder kommen, um sich bei uns (über euch) zu beschweren, so wollen wir zu ihnen sagen: ›Vergönnt sie ihnen um unsertwillen! [Denn wir haben durch den Krieg (gegen Jabes) nicht für jeden eine Frau gewonnen.] Nicht ihr habt sie ihnen ja gegeben; denn in diesem Fall würdet ihr als schuldig dastehen.‹«
And it shall be, when their fathers or their brothers come to contend with us, that we will say unto them, Be favorable unto them for our sakes; because we took not for each man his wife in the war; [and] because ye yourselves did not give them unto them, that ye should at this time be guilty.
23 Die Benjaminiten befolgten die Weisung: sie holten sich die erforderliche Zahl von Frauen aus den tanzenden Mädchen, die sie raubten, kehrten dann in ihren Erbbesitz zurück, bauten die Ortschaften wieder auf und ließen sich darin nieder.
And the children of Benjamin did so, and took themselves wives, according to their number, from the dancers whom they had stolen away; and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and rebuilt the cities, and dwelt in them.
24 Nunmehr zogen auch die Israeliten von dort heim, ein jeder in seinen Stamm und zu seinem Geschlecht, und begaben sich von dort weg, ein jeder in seinen Erbbesitz.
And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from there every man to his inheritance.
25 Zu jener Zeit gab es noch keinen König in Israel; jeder tat, was ihm gut dünkte.
In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did what was right in his own eyes.
