Richter 19
1 Zu jener Zeit, als es noch keinen König in Israel gab, begab es sich, daß ein Levit, der ganz hinten im Gebirge Ephraim als Fremdling wohnte, sich ein Mädchen aus Bethlehem in Juda zum Nebenweibe nahm.
At that time the Israeli people had no king. There was a man from the tribe of Levi who lived in a remote place in the hilly area where the tribe of Ephraim lives. He had previously taken as a wife a woman who was a slave. She was from Bethlehem, in the area where the tribe of Judah lives.
2 Aber sein Nebenweib überwarf sich mit ihm, verließ ihn und kehrte in ihres Vaters Haus nach Bethlehem in Juda zurück; dort blieb sie vier Monate lang.
But she started to sleep with other men also. Then she left him and returned to her father’s house in Bethlehem. She stayed there for four months.
3 Da machte ihr Mann sich auf den Weg und zog ihr nach, um sie durch freundliches Zureden zur Rückkehr zu bewegen; seinen Diener und ein paar Esel hatte er bei sich. Sie führte ihn dann in das Haus ihres Vaters, und als dieser ihn sah, kam er ihm freundlich entgegen.
Then her husband took his servant and two donkeys and went to Bethlehem. He went to ask her to come back to live with him again. When he arrived at her father’s house, she invited him to come in. Her father was happy to see him.
4 Sein Schwiegervater, der Vater des jungen Weibes, hielt ihn dann zurück, so daß er drei Tage bei ihm blieb; sie aßen und tranken miteinander und übernachteten dort.
The woman’s father asked him to stay. So he stayed there for three days. During that time he ate and drank and slept there.
5 Am vierten Tage aber, als sie in der Frühe aufgestanden waren und er aufbrechen wollte, sagte der Vater des jungen Weibes zu seinem Schwiegersohn: »Stärke dich noch mit einem Imbiß, dann mögt ihr euch auf den Weg machen!«
On the fourth day, they all got up early in the morning. The man from the tribe of Levi was preparing to leave, but the woman’s father said to him, “Eat something before you go.”
6 So setzten sie sich denn hin, und die beiden aßen und tranken zusammen; dann bat der Vater des jungen Weibes den Mann: »Entschließe dich doch, über Nacht noch hier zu bleiben, und sei guter Dinge!«
So the two men sat down to eat and drink together. Then the woman’s father said to him, “Please stay another night. Relax/Rest and have a joyful time.”
7 Und als der Mann aufstand, um sich auf den Weg zu machen, nötigte ihn sein Schwiegervater, so daß er wiederum über Nacht dablieb.
The man from the tribe of Levi wanted to leave, but the woman’s father requested him to stay one more night. So he stayed again that night.
8 Als er dann am fünften Tage frühmorgens aufbrechen wollte, sagte der Vater des jungen Weibes wiederum: »Stärke dich doch erst und wartet noch bis zum Nachmittag!«, und so aßen sie beide nochmals zusammen.
On the fifth day, the man got up early and prepared to leave. But the woman’s father said to him again, “Have something to eat. Wait until this afternoon, [and then leave].” So the two men ate together.
9 Als dann der Mann aufstand, um mit seinem Nebenweibe und seinem Diener aufzubrechen, sagte sein Schwiegervater, der Vater des jungen Weibes, zu ihm: »Sieh doch, der Tag geht zu Ende, es will Abend werden: übernachtet doch hier! Sieh doch, wie der Tag schon zur Neige geht; bleibe über Nacht hier und laß dir’s bei mir gefallen! Morgen früh macht ihr euch dann auf euren Weg, und du kehrst nach Hause zurück.«
In the afternoon, when the man from the tribe of Levi and his slave wife and his servant got up to leave, the woman’s father said, “It will soon be dark. The day is almost over. Stay here tonight and have a good/joyful time. Tomorrow morning you can get up early and leave for your home.”
10 Aber der Mann wollte nicht noch einmal über Nacht bleiben, sondern brach auf und zog fort und kam bis in die Gegend von Jebus, das ist Jerusalem; seine beiden gesattelten Esel, sein Nebenweib (und sein Diener) waren bei ihm.
But the man from the tribe of Levi did not want to stay for another night. He put saddles on his two donkeys, and started to go with his slave wife [and his servant] toward Jebus [city], which is [now named] Jerusalem.
11 Als sie nun bei Jebus waren und der Tag schon stark zu Ende ging, sagte der Diener zu seinem Herrn: »Komm, laß uns hier in der Jebusiterstadt einkehren und darin übernachten!«
Late in the afternoon, they came near to Jebus. The servant said to his master, “We should stop in this city where the Jebus people-group live, and stay here tonight.”
12 Aber sein Herr erwiderte ihm: »Nein, wir wollen in keiner Stadt von fremden Leuten einkehren, die nicht zu den Israeliten gehören, sondern wollen bis Gibea weiterziehen.«
But his master said, “No, it would not be good for us to stay here where foreign people live. There are no Israeli people here. We will go on to Gibeah [city].”
13 Weiter sagte er zu seinem Diener: »Komm, wir wollen eine von den Ortschaften dort zu erreichen suchen und in Gibea oder in Rama über Nacht bleiben!«
He said to his servant, “Let’s go. It is not far to Gibeah. We can go there, or we can go a bit further to Ramah. We can stay in one of those two cities tonight.”
14 Als sie nun eiligst weiterzogen, ging die Sonne ihnen unter, als sie nahe bei Gibea waren, das zu Benjamin gehört.
So they continued walking. When they came near Gibeah, where people from the tribe of Benjamin live, the sun was setting.
15 Da kehrten sie dort ein, um zu einem Nachtquartier in Gibea zu gelangen, und er machte nach seiner Ankunft auf dem Marktplatz der Stadt halt; aber da war niemand, der sie zum Übernachten ins Haus aufgenommen hätte.
They stopped to stay there that night. They went to the public square of that city and sat down. But no one [who passed by] invited them to stay in their house for that night.
16 Endlich kam ein alter Mann abends vom Felde von seiner Arbeit heim; der stammte vom Gebirge Ephraim und lebte als Fremdling in Gibea, während die Bewohner des Ortes Benjaminiten waren.
Finally, in the evening, an old man came by. He had been working in the fields. He was from the hilly area of the tribe of Ephraim, but at that time he was living in Gibeah.
17 Als dieser nun sich umsah und den Wandersmann auf dem Marktplatz der Stadt erblickte, fragte er: »Wohin willst du, und woher kommst du?«
He realized that the man from the tribe of Levi was only traveling and did not have a home in that city. So he asked the man, “Where have you come from? And where are you going?”
18 Der antwortete ihm: »Wir sind auf der Wanderung von Bethlehem in Juda nach dem äußersten Teil des Gebirges Ephraim, wo ich zu Hause bin. Ich war nach Bethlehem in Juda gereist und will jetzt nach meinem Wohnort zurückkehren; aber niemand nimmt mich in sein Haus auf,
He replied, “We are traveling from Bethlehem to my home in the hilly area where people of the tribe of Ephraim live. I went from there to Bethlehem, but now we are going to [Shiloh] where Yahweh’s Sacred tent (OR, my house) is. No one here has invited us to stay in their house tonight.
19 obgleich wir sowohl Stroh als auch Futter für unsere Esel und auch Brot und Wein für mich und deine Magd und für den Burschen, der hier bei uns, deinen Knechten, ist, bei uns haben und nichts weiter bedürfen.«
We have straw and food for our donkeys, and bread and wine for me and the young woman and my servant. We do not need anything else.”
20 Da sagte der alte Mann: »Friede dir! Nur, was du bedarfst, laß meine Sorge sein! Doch auf dem Platz hier sollst du nicht übernachten!«
The old man said, “I wish that things will go well for you, but I would like to provide what you need. Do not stay here in the square tonight.”
21 Dann nahm er ihn in sein Haus mit und mengte Futter für die Esel; und als sie sich die Füße gewaschen hatten, aßen und tranken sie.
Then the old man took them to his house. He gave food to the donkeys. He [gave water to the man and the woman and the servant to] wash their feet. And he gave them something to eat and drink.
22 Während sie so sich gütlich taten, umringten die Männer der Stadt, nichtsnutzige Buben, das Haus, schlugen laut an die Tür und riefen dem alten Manne, dem das Haus gehörte, die Worte zu: »Gib den Mann heraus, der bei dir eingekehrt ist: wir wollen uns an ihn machen!«
While they were having a good/joyful time together, some wicked men from that city surrounded the house and started to bang on the door. They shouted to the old man, “Bring out to us the man who has come to your house. We want to have sex with him.”
23 Da ging der Besitzer des Hauses zu ihnen hinaus und sagte zu ihnen: »Nicht doch, meine Brüder! Begeht doch nichts so Böses! Nachdem dieser Mann in mein Haus gekommen ist, dürft ihr eine solche Schandtat nimmermehr verüben.
The old man went outside and said to them, “Friends, I will not do that. That would be a very evil thing. This man is a guest in my house. You should not do such a terrible/disgraceful/shameful thing!
24 Da ist meine Tochter, die Jungfrau, und das Nebenweib dieses Mannes: die will ich euch herausbringen; denen mögt ihr Gewalt antun und mit ihnen machen, was euch gefällt, aber an diesem Manne dürft ihr eine solche Schandtat nicht verüben!«
Look, my daughter is here. She is [still] a virgin. And this man’s slave wife is here. I will bring them out to you now. You may do to them whatever you wish, but do not do such a terrible/disgraceful/shameful thing to this young man!”
25 Aber die Männer wollten nicht auf ihn hören. Da nahm der Mann sein Nebenweib und führte sie zu ihnen hinaus auf die Straße, und sie mißbrauchten sie und taten ihr Gewalt an die ganze Nacht hindurch bis zum Morgen; erst bei Tagesanbruch ließen sie sie gehen.
But the men did not pay attention to what he said. So the man from the tribe of Levi took his slave wife and sent her to them, outside the house. They raped [EUP] her and abused her all night. Then at dawn, they allowed her to go.
26 Als nun der Morgen tagte, kam das Weib heim und fiel am Toreingang zum Hause des Mannes, woselbst ihr Herr war, nieder und blieb da liegen, bis es hell wurde.
She returned to the old man’s house, where her husband was staying, but she fell down at the doorway and lay there all night.
27 Als nun ihr Herr am Morgen aufstand und die Haustür öffnete und hinaustrat, um seines Weges weiter zu ziehen, fand er das Weib, sein Nebenweib, am Toreingang zum Hause liegen mit den Händen auf der Schwelle.
In the morning, when the man from the tribe of Levi got up, he went outside of the house to continue his journey. He saw his slave wife lying there at the doorway of the house. Her hands were on the doorsill.
28 Er rief ihr zu: »Stehe auf, wir wollen weiterziehen!«, aber es erfolgte keine Antwort. Da hob er sie auf den Esel, machte sich dann auf und zog nach seinem Wohnort.
He said to her, “Get up! Let’s go!” But she did not answer, [because she had died]. He put her body on the donkey and traveled to his home.
29 Als er dort in sein Haus gekommen war, nahm er ein Messer, ergriff sein Nebenweib, zerschnitt sie Glied für Glied in zwölf Stücke und schickte diese im ganzen Gebiet Israels umher.
When he arrived home, he took a knife and cut the body of the slave woman into twelve pieces. Then he sent one piece to each area of Israel, [along with a message telling what had happened].
30 Da erklärte denn jeder, der das sah: »So etwas ist bisher noch nicht vorgekommen und noch nicht erlebt worden seit der Zeit, wo die Israeliten aus dem Lande Ägypten heraufgezogen sind, bis zum heutigen Tage. Nehmt es zu Herzen, beratet euch und redet!«
Everyone who saw a piece of the body and the message said, “Nothing like this has ever happened before. Not since our ancestors left Egypt [have we heard of such a terrible thing]. We need to think carefully about it. Someone should decide what we should do.”
