1 Es war einst ein Mann vom Gebirge Ephraim mit Namen Micha;

There was a man named Micah who lived in the hilly area where the tribe of Ephraim live.

2 der sagte zu seiner Mutter: »Die elfhundert Silberstücke, die dir entwendet worden sind und um derenwillen du einen Fluch ausgestoßen und ihn gar vor meinen Ohren ausgesprochen hast – wisse, das Geld ist in meinem Besitz: ich selbst habe es genommen; nun aber will ich es dir zurückgeben!« Da antwortete seine Mutter: »Gesegnet seist du vom HERRN, mein Sohn!«

One day he said to his mother, “I heard you curse whoever stole (1,100 pieces/28 pounds/13 kg.) of silver from your house. I am the one who took the silver, and I still have it.” His mother replied, “My son, I pray that Yahweh will bless you [for admitting that you took it].”

3 Als er nun die elfhundert Silberstücke seiner Mutter zurückgegeben hatte, sagte diese: »Ich will das Geld dem HERRN weihen (und es) aus meiner Hand zugunsten meines Sohnes (hingeben): es soll ein geschnitztes und gegossenes Gottesbild davon angefertigt werden.«

Micah gave all the silver back to his mother. Then she said [to herself], “I will give [some of] this silver to Yahweh.” And she said to her son, “My son, I want you to make an idol and a statue [from this silver]. So I will give [some of] this silver back to you [for making these things].”

4 Als er nun das Geld seiner Mutter zurückgegeben hatte, nahm diese zweihundert Silberstücke und gab sie einem Goldschmied, der davon ein geschnitztes und gegossenes Gottesbild anfertigte, das nun im Hause Michas aufgestellt wurde.

So when he gave all the silver to his mother, she took (200 pieces/about 5 pounds/1.6 kg.) of it to a (silversmith/man who made things from silver). With the silver that man made an idol and a statue, [and gave them to Micah]. Micah put them in his house.

5 So besaß denn dieser Micha ein Gotteshaus; er ließ dann noch ein kostbares Schulterkleid und einen Hausgott anfertigen und stellte einen seiner Söhne an, daß er ihm (dem Micha) als Priester diente.

He had in his house a special (shrine/place for putting sacred things). He made a sacred vest and some small idols [and put them in this shrine along with the big idol and the statue]. Then Micah chose one of his sons to become his priest.

6 Zu jener Zeit gab es noch keinen König in Israel; ein jeder tat, was ihm beliebte.

At that time, the Israeli people did not have a king. So [Micah and everyone else] did whatever they considered to be the right thing to do.

7 Nun war da ein junger Mann aus Bethlehem in Juda aus dem Geschlecht Judas; der war ein Levit und hielt sich dort als Fremder auf.

There was a young man who had been living in Bethlehem in the area where the tribe of Judah lives. He [wanted to work as a priest because he] was a member of the tribe of Levi.

8 Dieser Mann verließ die Stadt Bethlehem in Juda, um sich an irgendeinem anderen Orte, wo es sich gerade träfe, als Fremder niederzulassen, und kam bei seiner Wanderung im Gebirge Ephraim zum Hause Michas.

So he left Bethlehem to find another place to live [and work]. He came to Micah’s house in the hilly area where the tribe of Ephraim live.

9 Dieser fragte ihn: »Woher kommst du?« Er antwortete ihm: »Ich bin ein Levit aus Bethlehem in Juda und bin unterwegs, um mich an irgendeinem Ort niederzulassen, wo ich etwas Geeignetes finde.«

Micah asked him, “Where are you from?” He replied, “I come from Bethlehem. I am from the tribe of Levi, and I am looking for a place to live [and work as a priest].”

10 Da sagte Micha zu ihm: »Bleibe bei mir und sei mir ein Vater und Priester, so will ich dir jährlich zehn Silberstücke geben und für Kleidung und deinen Lebensunterhalt aufkommen.« Als er dann dem Leviten weiter zuredete,

Micah said to him, “Stay with me, and you can become like a father [to counsel me], and be my priest. Each year I will give to you ten pieces of silver and some [new] clothes. And I will provide food for you.”

11 erklärte dieser sich einverstanden, bei dem Manne zu bleiben; und der junge Mann galt ihm wie einer seiner Söhne.

So the young man agreed to live with Micah. He became like one of Micah’s own sons.

12 Micha nahm also den Leviten in seinen Dienst, so daß der junge Mann sein Priester wurde und im Hause Michas blieb.

Micah appointed him to be a priest, and he lived in Micah’s house.

13 Micha aber dachte: »Jetzt bin ich gewiß, daß der HERR es mir wird glücken lassen, weil ich einen Leviten zum Priester (gewonnen) habe.«

Then Micah said, “Now I know that Yahweh will do good things for me, because I have a man from the tribe of Levi to be my priest.”
