Richter 12

1 Es wurden aber die Ephraimiten aufgeboten; sie zogen nordwärts und ließen dem Jephtha sagen: »Warum bist du zum Krieg gegen die Ammoniter ausgezogen, ohne uns zur Teilnahme am Feldzuge aufzufordern? Nun wollen wir dir dein Haus über dem Kopf in Brand stecken!«

The men of Ephraim were gathered together, and passed northward; and they said to Jephthah, "Why did you pass over to fight against the people of Ammon, and did not call us to go with you? We will burn your house on you with fire."

2 Jephtha erwiderte ihnen: »Ich und mein Volk haben einen schweren Streit mit den Ammonitern gehabt, und ich habe euch um Hilfe angerufen, aber ihr habt mir keinen Beistand gegen sie geleistet.

And Jephthah said to them, "I and my people had a dispute, and the people of Ammon were oppressing me greatly; and when I called you, you did not save me out of their hand.

3 Als ich nun sah, daß du mir nicht zu Hilfe kommen wolltest, setzte ich mein Leben aufs Spiel und zog gegen die Ammoniter zu Felde, und der HERR gab sie in meine Gewalt. Warum zieht ihr also jetzt gegen mich heran, um Händel mit mir anzufangen?«

When I saw that you did not save me, I put my life in my own hands, and passed over against the people of Ammon, and the LORD delivered them into my hand. Why then have you come up to me this day, to fight against me?"

4 Darauf bot Jephtha alle Männer von Gilead auf und griff die Ephraimiten an, und diese wurden von den Gileaditern geschlagen; sie hatten nämlich die Behauptung ausgesprochen: »Flüchtige Ephraimiten seid ihr; Gilead liegt nämlich in der Mitte von Ephraim und Manasse.«

Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim; and the men of Gilead struck Ephraim, because they said, "You are fugitives of Ephraim, you Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim, and in the midst of Manasseh."

5 Die Gileaditer aber hatten die Jordanfurten nach Ephraim zu besetzt. Sooft nun flüchtige Ephraimiten baten: »Laßt mich hinüber!«, fragten die Männer von Gilead den Betreffenden, ob er ein Ephratiter sei; antwortete er dann mit nein,

The Gileadites took the fords of the Jordan against the Ephraimites. It was so, that when any of the fugitives of Ephraim said, "Let me go over," the men of Gilead said to him, "Are you an Ephraimite?" If he said, "No";

6 so forderte man ihn auf, das Wort »Schibboleth« auszusprechen. Sagte er dann »Sibboleth«, weil ihm die richtige Aussprache unmöglich war, so ergriffen sie ihn und machten ihn an den Jordanfurten nieder. So kamen damals 42000 Ephraimiten ums Leben.

then they said to him, "Now say 'Shibboleth;'" and he said "Sibboleth"; for he couldn't manage to pronounce it right: then they seized him, and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. There fell at that time of Ephraim forty-two thousand.

7 Jephtha aber war sechs Jahre lang Richter in Israel; dann starb Jephtha, der Gileaditer, und wurde in einer der Städte Gileads begraben.

Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died, and was buried in his city in Gilead.

8 Nach ihm war Ibzan aus Bethlehem Richter in Israel.

After him Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.

9 Er hatte dreißig Söhne, und dreißig Töchter verheiratete er nach auswärts, und dreißig Töchter führte er seinen Söhnen von auswärts als Gattinnen zu. Nachdem er sieben Jahre lang als Richter in Israel gewaltet hatte,

He had thirty sons; and thirty daughters he sent abroad, and thirty daughters he brought in from abroad for his sons. He judged Israel seven years.

10 starb Ibzan und wurde in Bethlehem begraben.

Ibzan died, and was buried at Bethlehem.

11 Nach ihm war Elon aus dem Stamme Sebulon Richter in Israel und zwar zehn Jahre lang.

After him Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel; and he judged Israel ten years.

12 Als Elon aus Sebulon dann starb, wurde er in Ajjalon im Lande Sebulon begraben.

Elon the Zebulunite died, and was buried in Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.

13 Nach ihm war Abdon aus Pirathon, der Sohn Hillels, Richter in Israel.

After him Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel.

14 Er hatte vierzig Söhne und dreißig Enkel, die auf siebzig Eselsfüllen ritten. Nachdem er acht Jahre lang Richter in Israel gewesen war,

He had forty sons and thirty grandsons who rode on seventy donkey colts. And he judged Israel eight years.

15 starb Abdon aus Pirathon, der Sohn Hillels, und wurde zu Pirathon im Lande Ephraim am Amalekiterberge begraben.

Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died, and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.
