Josua 8
1 Hierauf sagte der HERR zu Josua: »Fürchte dich nicht und sei ohne Angst! Nimm das gesamte Kriegsvolk mit dir und mache dich auf, ziehe gegen Ai hinauf: hiermit gebe ich den König von Ai samt seinem Volk, seiner Stadt und seinem Lande in deine Gewalt.
And YHWH says to Joshua, “Do not fear, nor be frightened, take with you all the people of war, and rise, go up to Ai; see, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land,
2 Du sollst mit Ai und seinem König so verfahren, wie du mit Jericho und seinem König verfahren bist; jedoch die dortige Beute und das Vieh dürft ihr für euch behalten. Lege dir einen Hinterhalt gegen die Stadt auf ihrer Westseite!«
and you have done to Ai and to her king as you have done to Jericho and to her king; only spoil its spoil and its livestock for yourselves; for you set an ambush for the city at its rear.”
3 Da machte sich Josua mit dem gesamten Kriegsvolk auf, um gegen Ai hinaufzuziehen. Er wählte aber 30000 Mann tapfere Krieger aus und sandte sie bei Nacht ab,
And Joshua rises, and all the people of war, to go up to Ai, and Joshua chooses thirty thousand men, mighty men of valor, and sends them away by night,
4 nachdem er ihnen folgenden Befehl gegeben hatte: »Wisset wohl: ihr sollt euch gegen die Stadt in den Hinterhalt legen, und zwar auf der Westseite der Stadt; entfernt euch nicht zu weit von der Stadt und haltet euch allesamt bereit!
and commands them, saying, “See, you are ones lying in wait against the city, at the rear of the city, you do not go very far off from the city, and all of you have been prepared,
5 Ich aber und das ganze Kriegsvolk, das bei mir ist, werden gegen die Stadt anrücken, und wenn sie dann wie das vorige Mal einen Ausfall gegen uns machen, wollen wir vor ihnen fliehen.
and I and all the people who [are] with me draw near to the city, and it has come to pass, when they come out to meet us as at the first, and we have fled before them,
6 Sie werden dann herauskommen, um uns zu verfolgen, bis wir sie von der Stadt ganz abgezogen haben; denn sie werden denken: ›Die fliehen vor uns wie das vorige Mal‹; und wir wollen ja auch wirklich vor ihnen fliehen.
and they have come out after us until we have drawn them out of the city, for they say, They are fleeing before us as at the first, and we have fled before them,
7 Dann müßt ihr aus dem Hinterhalt hervorbrechen und euch der Stadt bemächtigen; denn der HERR, euer Gott, wird sie in eure Gewalt geben.
and you rise from the ambush, and have occupied the city, and your God YHWH has given it into your hand;
8 Wenn ihr aber die Stadt eingenommen habt, so steckt sie in Brand: nach dem Gebot des HERRN sollt ihr verfahren! Das sind meine Befehle für euch.«
and it has been, when you capture the city, you burn the city with fire, you do according to the word of YHWH, see, I have commanded you.”
9 Als Josua sie so entlassen hatte, zogen sie in den Hinterhalt und nahmen Stellung zwischen Bethel und Ai, und zwar auf der Westseite von Ai, während Josua jene Nacht inmitten des übrigen Kriegsvolkes verbrachte.
And Joshua sends them away, and they go to the ambush, and abide between Bethel and Ai, on the west of Ai; and Joshua lodges on that night in the midst of the people.
10 Josua machte sich dann am folgenden Morgen früh auf und zog, nachdem er das Kriegsvolk gemustert hatte, mit den Ältesten der Israeliten an der Spitze des Heeres gegen Ai hinauf.
And Joshua rises early in the morning, and inspects the people, and goes up, he and [the] elderly of Israel, before the people to Ai;
11 Das gesamte Kriegsvolk, das bei ihm war, zog hinauf und rückte heran und kam vor der Stadt an; sie lagerten nördlich von Ai, so daß das Tal zwischen ihnen und Ai lag.
and all the people of war who [are] with him have gone up, and draw near and come in before the city, and encamp on the north of Ai; and the valley [is] between him and Ai.
12 [Er hatte aber etwa fünftausend Mann genommen und sie als Hinterhalt zwischen Bethel und Ai, auf der Westseite der Stadt, Stellung nehmen lassen.
And he takes about five thousand men, and sets them [for] an ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west of the city;
13 Dann stellten sie das Volk auf, das ganze Heer, das sich nördlich von der Stadt befand, und dessen Hinterhalt westlich von der Stadt; Josua aber begab sich in jener Nacht mitten in das Tal.]
and they set the people, all the camp which [is] on the north of the city, and its rear on the west of the city, and that night Joshua goes on into the midst of the valley.
14 Als nun der König von Ai dies sah, machten sich die Männer der Stadt in der Frühe eilends auf und zogen aus, den Israeliten zum Kampf entgegen, er und sein ganzes Volk, an den bestimmten Ort vor der Steppe, ohne zu wissen, daß ihm auf der Westseite der Stadt ein Hinterhalt gelegt war.
And it comes to pass, when the king of Ai sees [it], that he hurries, and rises early, and the men of the city go out to meet Israel for battle, he and all his people, at the appointed time, at the front of the plain, and he has not known that an ambush [is] against him, on the rear of the city.
15 Da ließen sich Josua und ganz Israel von ihnen schlagen und flohen in der Richtung nach der Steppe zu.
And Joshua and all Israel [seem] struck before them, and flee the way of the wilderness,
16 Darauf wurde das gesamte Volk, das noch in der Stadt war, zu ihrer Verfolgung aufgeboten, und sie verfolgten Josua und ließen sich so von der Stadt weglocken:
and all the people who [are] in the city are called to pursue after them, and they pursue after Joshua, and are drawn away out of the city,
17 kein Mann blieb in Ai [und Bethel] zurück, der nicht zur Verfolgung der Israeliten ausgezogen wäre; die Stadt aber ließen sie hinter sich offen stehen und verfolgten die Israeliten.
and there has not been a man left in Ai and Bethel who has not gone out after Israel, and they leave the city open, and pursue after Israel.
18 Da sagte der HERR zu Josua: »Strecke die Lanze, die du in der Hand hast, gegen Ai aus, denn ich gebe es in deine Gewalt.« Da streckte Josua die Lanze, die er in der Hand hatte, gegen die Stadt aus.
And YHWH says to Joshua, “Stretch out with the javelin which [is] in your hand toward Ai, for I give it into your hand”; and Joshua stretches out with the javelin which [is] in his hand toward the city,
19 Nun verließ der Hinterhalt in aller Eile seinen Standort und gelangte, als Josua seine Hand ausgestreckt hatte, im Lauf zur Stadt, die sie einnahmen und sofort in Brand steckten.
and the ambush has risen [with] haste, out of its place, and they run at the stretching out of his hand, and go into the city, and capture it, and hurry, and burn the city with fire.
20 Als nun die Aiten sich umwandten und den Rauch von der Stadt zum Himmel aufsteigen sahen, hatten sie keine Möglichkeit mehr, hierhin oder dorthin zu fliehen; denn das israelitische Heer, das nach der Wüste hin geflohen war, wandte sich gegen seine Verfolger um.
And the men of Ai look behind them, and see, and behold, the smoke of the city has gone up to the heavens, and there has not been power in them to flee here and there—and the people who are fleeing to the wilderness have turned against the pursuer—
21 Denn als Josua und alle Israeliten sahen, daß der Hinterhalt die Stadt eingenommen hatte und daß der Rauch von der Stadt aufstieg, machten sie kehrt und schlugen die Aiten.
and Joshua and all Israel have seen that the ambush has captured the city, and that the smoke of the city has gone up, and they turn back and strike the men of Ai;
22 Jene anderen aber waren ihnen aus der Stadt entgegengezogen, so daß sich die Aiten mitten zwischen den Israeliten befanden, da die einen von dieser, die anderen von jener Seite kamen; und sie machten sie nieder, bis kein einziger von ihnen übrig war, der sich hätte retten oder entfliehen können.
and these have come out from the city to meet them, and they are in the midst of Israel, some on this [side], and some on that [side], and they strike them until he has not left a remnant and escaped one to them;
23 Den König von Ai aber nahmen sie lebendig gefangen und brachten ihn zu Josua.
and they have caught the king of Ai alive, and bring him near to Joshua.
24 Als nun die Israeliten alle Bewohner von Ai auf dem freien Felde und in der Wüste, wohin die sie verfolgt hatten, niedergemacht hatten und diese alle bis auf den letzten Mann durch das Schwert gefallen waren, da wandten sich alle Israeliten wieder gegen Ai und machten alle Einwohner ohne Gnade nieder.
And it comes to pass, at Israel’s finishing to slay all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness in which they pursued them (and all of them fall by the mouth of the sword until their consumption), that all of Israel turns back to Ai, and strikes it by the mouth of the sword;
25 Die Zahl aller, die an diesem Tage fielen, Männer und Weiber, betrug zwölftausend, die ganze Einwohnerschaft von Ai.
and all who fall during the day, of men and of women, are twelve thousand—all men of Ai.
26 Josua hatte nämlich seine Hand, die er mit der Lanze ausgestreckt hatte, nicht eher zurückgezogen, als bis der Bann an allen Bewohnern von Ai vollstreckt war.
And Joshua has not brought back his hand which he stretched out with the javelin until he has devoted all the inhabitants of Ai;
27 Nur das Vieh und die Beute dieser Stadt behielten die Israeliten für sich, nach der Weisung, die der HERR dem Josua erteilt hatte.
only the livestock and the spoil of that city has Israel spoiled for themselves, according to the word of YHWH which He commanded Joshua.
28 Josua verbrannte dann Ai und machte es für ewige Zeiten zu einem Schutthaufen, zu einer wüsten Stätte, bis auf den heutigen Tag.
And Joshua burns Ai, and makes it a continuous heap—a desolation to this day;
29 Den König von Ai aber ließ er bis zur Abendzeit an einen Baum hängen; doch bei Sonnenuntergang nahm man seinen Leichnam auf Befehl Josuas von dem Baume ab und warf ihn an den Eingang des Stadttores, wo man über ihm einen großen Steinhaufen errichtete, der dort noch bis zum heutigen Tage vorhanden ist.
and he has hanged the king of Ai on the tree until evening, and at the going in of the sun Joshua has commanded, and they take down his carcass from the tree, and cast it to the opening of the gate of the city, and raise a great heap of stones over it until this day.
30 Damals baute Josua dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels, einen Altar auf dem Berge Ebal,
Then Joshua builds an altar to YHWH, God of Israel, in Mount Ebal,
31 wie Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, den Israeliten geboten hatte, wie im Gesetzbuch Moses geschrieben steht, einen Altar aus unbehauenen Steinen, an die noch kein eisernes Werkzeug gekommen war; und sie brachten auf ihm dem HERRN Brandopfer dar und schlachteten Dankopfer.
as Moses, servant of YHWH, commanded the sons of Israel, as it is written in the Scroll of the Law of Moses—an altar of whole stones, over which he has not waved iron—and they cause burnt-offerings to go up on it to YHWH, and sacrifice peace-offerings;
32 Dann schrieb er dort auf Steine eine Abschrift des mosaischen Gesetzes, das (Mose) einst in Gegenwart der Israeliten geschrieben hatte.
and he writes there on the stones a copy of the Law of Moses, which he has written in the presence of the sons of Israel.
33 Und ganz Israel mit seinen Ältesten und Obmännern und seinen Richtern stand zu beiden Seiten der Lade den levitischen Priestern gegenüber, welche die Bundeslade des HERRN zu tragen hatten, sowohl die Fremdlinge als auch die Einheimischen, die eine Hälfte von ihnen nach dem Berge Garizim zu, die andere Hälfte nach dem Berge Ebal hin, wie Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, einstmals geboten hatte, das Volk Israel zu segnen.
And all Israel, and its elderly, and authorities, and his judges, are standing on this [side] and on that [side] of the Ark, before the priests, the Levites, carrying the Ark of the Covenant of YHWH, the sojourner as well as the native, half of them in front of Mount Gerizim, and the half of them in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses servant of YHWH had commanded to bless the people of Israel at the first.
34 Darnach las Josua alle Worte des Gesetzes laut vor, den Segen wie den Fluch, genau so, wie es im Gesetzbuch geschrieben steht:
And afterward he has proclaimed all the words of the Law, the blessing and the reviling, according to all that is written in the Scroll of the Law;
35 es gab kein Wort von allem, was Mose geboten hatte, das Josua nicht vor der ganzen Versammlung der Israeliten, auch vor den Frauen und Kindern und den Fremdlingen, die unter ihnen mitzogen, laut vorgelesen hätte.
there has not been a thing of all that Moses commanded which Joshua has not proclaimed before all the assembly of Israel, and the women, and the infants, and the sojourner who is going in their midst.
