Josua 24

1 Weiter versammelte Josua alle Stämme der Israeliten in Sichem und berief dorthin die Ältesten der Israeliten sowie ihre Oberhäupter, ihre Richter und Obmänner. Als sie sich dann vor Gott aufgestellt hatten,

And Joshua gathered together all the tribes of Israel, unto Shechem, —and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers, and they presented themselves before God.

2 sagte Josua zu dem ganzen Volke: »So spricht der HERR, der Gott Israels: ›Eure Väter haben vor alters jenseits des Euphratstromes gewohnt, nämlich Tharah, der Vater Abrahams und Nahors, und haben andere Götter verehrt.

Then said Joshua unto all the people—Thus, saith Yahweh, God of Israel, Beyond the River, dwelt your fathers from age-past times, [unto] Terah, father of Abraham, and father of Nahor, —and they served other gods.

3 Da holte ich euren Vater Abraham aus dem Lande jenseits des Euphratstromes und ließ ihn im ganzen Lande Kanaan umherwandern und gab ihm zahlreiche Nachkommenschaft, nachdem ich ihm Isaak geschenkt hatte.

So I took your father, Abraham, from beyond the River, and led him through all the land of Canaan, —and multiplied his seed, and gave unto him, Isaac;

4 Dem Isaak aber ließ ich Jakob und Esau geboren werden und gab dem Esau das Gebirge Seir zum Besitz, während Jakob und seine Söhne nach Ägypten hinabzogen.

and gave unto Isaac Jacob and Esau, —and gave unto Esau, Mount Seir, to possess it, but, Jacob and his sons, went down into Egypt.

5 Dann sandte ich Mose und Aaron und suchte Ägypten heim mit den Wundertaten, die ich inmitten des Landes verrichtete, und führte euch danach von dort weg.

Then sent I Moses and Aaron, and plagued Egypt, according to that which I did in their midst, and, afterwards, brought you forth.

6 Als ich aber eure Väter aus Ägypten wegführte und ihr an das Meer gekommen wart, verfolgten die Ägypter eure Väter mit Kriegswagen und Reitern bis ans Schilfmeer.

Yea I brought forth your fathers, out of Egypt, and ye came unto the sea, and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers, with chariots and with horsemen, unto the Red Sea.

7 Als sie nun zum HERRN um Hilfe schrien, ließ er dichte Finsternis zwischen euch und die Ägypter treten und ließ das Meer über sie hinströmen, so daß es sie überflutete; ihr habt ja mit eigenen Augen gesehen, was ich den Ägyptern habe widerfahren lassen. Dann habt ihr geraume Zeit in der Wüste zugebracht.

So they made outcry unto Yahweh, and he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought in upon them the sea, and covered them, —and your eyes beheld what I did with the Egyptians. And, when ye had remained in the desert many days,

8 Hierauf führte ich euch in das Land der Amoriter, die jenseits des Jordans ansässig waren; und als sie gegen euch kämpften, gab ich sie in eure Gewalt, so daß ihr in den Besitz ihres Landes kamet, und ich vernichtete sie vor euch.

then I brought you into the land of the Amorites, who were dwelling over the Jordan, and they fought with you, —then delivered I them into your hand, and ye took possession of their land, so I destroyed them from before you.

9 Als dann der Moabiterkönig Balak, der Sohn Zippors, sich erhob und gegen Israel kämpfen wollte und Bileam, den Sohn Beors, durch Gesandte rufen ließ, damit er euch verfluche,

Then rose up Balak, son of Zippor, king of Moab, and made war with Israel, —and sent and called for Balaam son of Beor, to curse you;

10 war ich nicht gewillt, auf Bileam zu hören; er mußte euch vielmehr segnen, und so errettete ich euch aus seiner Gewalt.

but I was not willing to hearken unto Balaam, —so, he kept on blessing, you, and I rescued you out of his hand.

11 Als ihr hierauf über den Jordan gezogen und nach Jericho gekommen wart und die Bürger von Jericho sowie die Amoriter, Pherissiter, Kanaanäer, Hethiter, Girgasiter, Hewiter und Jebusiter feindlich gegen euch auftraten, gab ich sie in eure Gewalt

Then passed ye over the Jordan, and came in unto Jericho, and, when they would have made war with you—even the lords of Jericho—the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Girgashite, the Hivite and the Jebusite, then delivered I them into your hand.

12 und sandte die Hornissen vor euch her: die trieben sie vor euch her in die Flucht, die beiden Amoriterkönige, ohne Zutun deines Schwertes und deines Bogens.

And I sent before you the hornet, which drave them out from before you, the two kings of the Amorites, —not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.

13 So habe ich euch ein Land gegeben, um das du dich nicht hast zu mühen brauchen, und Städte, in denen ihr jetzt wohnt, ohne sie gebaut zu haben; von Weinbergen und Ölbaumgärten, die ihr nicht angelegt habt, genießt ihr die Früchte.‹

Thus I gave unto you a land on which thou hadst not laboured, and cities which ye had not built, and ye proceeded to dwell therein, —of vineyards and oliveyards, which ye planted not, ye are eating.

14 So fürchtet nun den HERRN und dient ihm aufrichtig und treu! Schafft die Götter weg, denen eure Väter jenseits des Euphratstromes und in Ägypten gedient haben, und dient dem HERRN!

Now, therefore, revere ye Yahweh, and serve him, in sincerity and in truth, —and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River, and in Egypt, and serve ye Yahweh.

15 Wollt ihr euch aber nicht dazu verstehen, dem HERRN zu dienen, so entscheidet euch heute, wem ihr dienen wollt, ob den Göttern, denen eure Väter jenseits des Euphratstromes gedient haben, oder den Göttern der Amoriter, in deren Lande ihr wohnt. Ich aber und mein Haus, wir wollen dem HERRN dienen!«

But, if it be, a vexation, in your eyes, to serve Yahweh, choose ye for yourselves, to-day, whom ye will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served, that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye are dwelling, —but, I and my house, will serve Yahweh.

16 Da gab das Volk die Erklärung ab: »Fern sei es von uns, den HERRN zu verlassen und anderen Göttern zu dienen!

Then responded the people, and said, Far be it from us, that we should forsake Yahweh, —to serve other gods;

17 Denn der HERR, unser Gott, ist es, der uns und unsere Väter aus dem Lande Ägypten, aus dem Hause der Knechtschaft, hergeführt und der vor unsern Augen jene großen Wunder verrichtet und uns auf dem ganzen Wege, den wir gezogen sind, und unter all den Völkerschaften, durch deren Land unsere Wanderung gegangen ist, behütet hat.

for, as for Yahweh our God, he, brought up both us and our fathers, out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of servants, —and who did before our eyes, these great signs, and preserved us throughout all the way wherein we journeyed, and among all the peoples through the midst of whom we passed;

18 Ja, der HERR ist es, der alle Völker, auch die Amoriter, die Bewohner des Landes, vor uns her vertrieben hat. Auch wir wollen dem HERRN dienen, denn er ist unser Gott!«

then did Yahweh drive out all the peoples, even the Amorites were dwelling in the land, from before us, —we too, will serve Yahweh, for, he, is our God.

19 Da sagte Josua zum Volk: »Ihr seid nicht imstande, dem HERRN zu dienen; denn er ist ein heiliger Gott; ein eifersüchtiger Gott ist er, der euch eure Übertretungen und eure Sünden nicht vergeben wird.

Then said Joshua unto the people—Ye cannot serve Yahweh, for, a holy God, he is, a jealous GOD, he is, he will not forgive your transgression, nor your sins.

20 Wenn ihr den HERRN verlaßt und fremden Göttern dient, so wird er sich (von euch) abwenden und euch Unheil widerfahren lassen und euch vernichten, nachdem er euch Gutes getan hat.«

When ye forsake Yahweh, and serve the gods of a stranger, then will he turn, and inflict on you calamity, and consume you, after that he hath dealt well with you.

21 Das Volk aber erklärte dem Josua: »Nein, dem HERRN wollen wir dienen!«

But the people said unto Joshua, —Nay! but, Yahweh, will we serve.

22 Da sagte Josua zum Volk: »Ihr seid Zeugen gegen euch selbst, daß ihr euch den HERRN erwählt habt, ihm zu dienen.« Sie antworteten: »Ja, wir sind Zeugen!«

Then said Joshua unto the people—Witnesses, are ye, against yourselves, that, ye yourselves, have chosen you Yahweh, to serve him. And they said: Witnesses!

23 »So schafft nun die fremden Götter weg, die noch unter euch sind, und neigt euer Herz dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels, zu!«

Now, therefore, put ye away the gods of the stranger, that are in your midst, —and incline your heart unto Yahweh, God of Israel.

24 Da erklärte das Volk dem Josua: »Dem HERRN, unserm Gott, wollen wir dienen und seinen Weisungen gehorchen!«

And the people said unto Joshua, —Yahweh our God, will we serve, and, unto his voice, will we hearken.

25 So verpflichtete denn Josua das Volk an jenem Tage feierlich auf den Bund und setzte für die Israeliten in Sichem Gesetz und Recht fest.

So then Joshua solemnised a covenant for the people, on that day, —and set for them a statute and a regulation, in Shechem.

26 Darauf trug Josua dies alles in das Gesetzbuch Gottes ein, nahm dann einen großen Stein und richtete ihn dort unter der Terebinthe auf, die im Heiligtum des HERRN stand.

And Joshua wrote these words in the scroll of the law of God, —and took a great stone, and set it up there, under the oak that was by the sanctuary of Yahweh.

27 Dann sagte Josua zu dem ganzen Volk: »Wisset wohl: dieser Stein da soll als Zeuge gegen uns dienen, denn er hat alle Worte gehört, die der HERR zu uns geredet hat; darum soll er Zeuge gegen euch sein, damit ihr gegen euren Gott nicht treulos handelt!«

And Joshua said unto all the people—Lo! this stone, shall serve against us as a witness, for, it, hath heard all the sayings of Yahweh, which he hath spoken with us, —so shall it serve against you as a witness, lest ye should act deceptively against your God.

28 Hierauf entließ Josua das Volk, einen jeden in sein Besitztum.

And Joshua sent the people away, every man unto his inheritance.

29 Nach diesen Begebenheiten starb Josua, der Sohn Nuns, der Knecht des HERRN, im Alter von hundertundzehn Jahren;

And it came to pass, after these things, that Joshua son of Nun, servant of Yahweh, died, being a hundred and ten years old.

30 und man begrub ihn im Bereich seines Erbbesitzes zu Thimnath-Serah auf dem Gebirge Ephraim nördlich vom Berge Gaas.

And they buried him within the bounds of his own inheritance, in Timnath-serah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, on the north of Mount Gaash.

31 Die Israeliten aber dienten dem HERRN, solange Josua lebte und während der ganzen Lebenszeit der Ältesten, die Josua noch lange überlebten und die alle die Taten kannten, die der HERR an Israel vollbracht hatte.

So then Israel served Yahweh all the days of Joshua, —and all the days of the elders who prolonged their days after Joshua, and who had known all the work of Yahweh, which he had wrought for Israel.

32 Die Gebeine Josephs aber, welche die Israeliten aus Ägypten mitgebracht hatten, begrub man zu Sichem auf dem Stück Land, das Jakob einst von den Söhnen Hemors, des Vaters Sichems, um den Preis von hundert Kesita gekauft hatte und das dann in den Besitz der Nachkommen Josephs übergegangen war.

And, the bones of Joseph—which the sons of Israel had brought up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in the portion of field, which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor, father of Shechem, for a hundred pieces of money, —and they belonged unto the sons of Joseph, as an inheritance.

33 Als hierauf auch Eleasar, der Sohn Aarons, gestorben war, begrub man ihn in Gibea, der Stadt seines Sohnes Pinehas, die diesem auf dem Gebirge Ephraim zugewiesen worden war.

And, Eleazar son of Aaron, died, —and they buried him in the hill of Phinehas his son, which was given to him, in the hill country of Ephraim.
