Jona 4

1 Das verursachte aber dem Jona großen Verdruß, und er geriet in Zorn,

And it is grievous to Jonah—a great evil—and he is displeased at it;

2 so daß er folgendes Gebet an den HERRN richtete: »Ach, HERR, das ist es ja, was ich gedacht habe, als ich noch daheim war, und eben darum habe ich das vorige Mal die Flucht nach Tharsis ergriffen; denn ich wußte wohl, daß du ein gnädiger und barmherziger Gott bist, langsam zum Zorn und reich an Güte und geneigt, dich das Unheil gereuen zu lassen.

and he prays to YHWH, and he says, “Ah, now, O YHWH, is this not my word while I was in my own land—therefore I was beforehand [going] to flee to Tarshish—that I have known that You [are] a God, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in kindness, and relenting of evil?

3 Und nun, HERR, nimm doch mein Leben von mir! Denn es ist besser für mich, zu sterben als noch am Leben zu bleiben.«

And now, O YHWH, please take my soul from me, for better [is] my death than my life.”

4 Aber der HERR erwiderte: »Ist es recht von dir, so zu zürnen?«

And YHWH says, “Is doing good displeasing to you?”

5 Hierauf ging Jona aus der Stadt hinaus und ließ sich östlich von der Stadt nieder; er baute sich dort eine Hütte und setzte sich unter ihr in den Schatten, um abzuwarten, wie es der Stadt ergehen würde.

And Jonah goes forth from the city, and sits on the east of the city, and makes a shelter for himself there, and sits under it in the shade, until he sees what is in the city.

6 Da ließ Gott der HERR eine Rizinusstaude aufschießen und über Jona emporwachsen, damit er seinem Haupte Schatten biete und ihn von seinem Unmut befreie; und Jona hatte große Freude an dem Rizinus.

And YHWH God appoints a gourd, and causes it to come up over Jonah, to be a shade over his head, to give deliverance to him from his affliction, and Jonah rejoices because of the gourd [with] great joy.

7 Am andern Tage aber, als die Morgenröte aufging, ließ Gott einen Wurm entstehen, der fraß die Rizinusstaude an, so daß sie verdorrte;

And God appoints a worm at the going up of the dawn on the next day, and it strikes the gourd, and it dries up.

8 und als die Sonne aufging, ließ Gott einen schwülen Ostwind kommen; und die Sonne stach Jona auf das Haupt, so daß er ganz ohnmächtig wurde und sich den Tod wünschte mit den Worten: »Es ist besser für mich, zu sterben als noch am Leben zu bleiben!«

And it comes to pass, about the rising of the sun, that God appoints a cutting east wind, and the sun strikes on the head of Jonah, and he wraps himself up, and asks for his soul to die, and says, “Better [is] my death than my life.”

9 Da sagte Gott zu Jona: »Ist es wohl recht von dir, wegen der Rizinusstaude so zornig zu sein?« Er antwortete: »Ja, mit Recht bin ich erzürnt bis zum Sterben!«

And God says to Jonah: “Is doing good displeasing to you, because of the gourd?” And he says, “To do good is displeasing to me—to death.”

10 Der HERR aber entgegnete: »Dir tut der Rizinus leid, um den du dich doch nicht gemüht und den du nicht großgezogen hast, der in einer Nacht entstanden und in einer Nacht vergangen ist.

And YHWH says, “You have had pity on the gourd, for which you did not labor, neither did you nourish it, which came up [as] a son of night, and perished [as] a son of night,

11 Und mir sollte die große Stadt Ninive nicht leid tun, in der mehr als hundertzwanzigtausend Menschen leben, die zwischen rechts und links noch nicht zu unterscheiden wissen, dazu auch eine Menge Tiere?«

and I—do I not have pity on Nineveh, the great city, in which there are more than one hundred twenty thousand of mankind, who have not known between their right hand and their left—and much livestock?”
