Johannes 9

1 Im Vorübergehen sah er alsdann einen Mann, der von Geburt an blind war.

As He passed by, He saw a man who had been blind from his birth.

2 Da fragten ihn seine Jünger: »Rabbi, wer hat gesündigt, dieser Mann oder seine Eltern, daß er als Blinder geboren worden ist?«

So His disciples asked Him, "Rabbi, who sinned--this man or his parents--that he was born blind?"

3 Jesus antwortete: »Weder dieser hat gesündigt noch seine Eltern; sondern (dazu ist es geschehen) damit das Wirken Gottes an ihm offenbar würde.

"Neither he nor his parents sinned," answered Jesus, "but he was born blind in order that God's mercy might be openly shown in him.

4 Wir müssen die Werke dessen wirken, der mich gesandt hat, solange es Tag ist; es kommt die Nacht, in der niemand wirken kann.

We must do the works of Him who sent me while there is daylight. Night is coming on, when no one can work.

5 Solange ich in der Welt bin, bin ich das Licht der Welt.«

When I am in the world, I am the Light of the world."

6 Nach diesen Worten spie er auf den Boden, stellte mit dem Speichel einen Teig her, legte dem Blinden den Teig auf die Augen

After thus speaking, He spat on the ground, and then, kneading the dust and spittle into clay, He smeared the clay over the man's eyes and said to him,

7 und sagte zu ihm: »Gehe hin, wasche dich im Teiche Siloah!« – Das heißt übersetzt ›Abgesandter‹. – Da ging er hin, wusch sich und kam sehend zurück.

"Go and wash in the pool of Siloam" --the name means 'Sent.' So he went and washed his eyes, and returned able to see.

8 Nun sagten die Nachbarn und die Leute, die ihn früher als Bettler gesehen hatten: »Ist dieser nicht der Mann, der früher dasaß und bettelte?«

His neighbours, therefore, and the other people to whom he had been a familiar object because he was a beggar, began asking, "Is not this the man who used to sit and beg?"

9 Die einen sagten: »Ja, er ist’s«; andere meinten: »Nein, er sieht ihm nur ähnlich«; er selbst aber sagte: »Ja, ich bin’s.«

"Yes it is," replied some of them. "No it is not," said others, "but he is like him." His own statement was, "I am the man."

10 Da fragten sie ihn: »Auf welche Weise sind dir denn die Augen aufgetan worden?«

"How then were your eyes opened?" they asked.

11 Er antwortete: »Der Mann, der Jesus heißt, stellte einen Teig her, strich ihn mir auf die Augen und sagte zu mir: ›Gehe hin an den Siloahteich und wasche dich dort!‹ Da ging ich hin, wusch mich und konnte sehen.«

"He whose name is Jesus," he answered, "made clay and smeared my eyes with it, and then told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed and obtained sight."

12 Sie fragten ihn nun: »Wo ist der Mann?« Er antwortete: »Das weiß ich nicht.«

"Where is he?" they inquired, but the man did not know.

13 Man führte ihn nun zu den Pharisäern, ihn, den ehemals Blinden.

They brought him to the Pharisees--the man who had been blind.

14 Es war aber (gerade) Sabbat an dem Tage gewesen, an dem Jesus den Teig hergestellt und ihm die Augen aufgetan hatte.

Now the day on which Jesus made the clay and opened the man's eyes was the Sabbath.

15 Da fragten ihn nochmals auch die Pharisäer, wie er sehend geworden sei, und er antwortete ihnen: »Er hat mir einen Teig auf die Augen gelegt, ich habe mich dann gewaschen und kann nun sehen.«

So the Pharisees renewed their questioning as to how he had obtained his sight. "He put clay on my eyes," he replied, "and I washed, and now I can see."

16 Da sagten einige von den Pharisäern: »Der betreffende Mensch ist nicht von Gott her, weil er den Sabbat nicht hält«; andere dagegen meinten: »Wie könnte ein sündiger Mensch derartige Wunderzeichen tun?« So bestand eine Meinungsverschiedenheit unter ihnen.

This led some of the Pharisees to say, "That man has not come from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath." "How is it possible for a bad man to do such miracles?" argued others.

17 Sie fragten also den Blindgeborenen aufs neue: »Was sagst du denn von ihm? Dir hat er doch die Augen aufgetan.« Jener antwortete: »Er ist ein Prophet.«

And there was a division among them. So again they asked the once blind man, "What is your account of him? --for he opened your eyes." "He is a Prophet," he replied.

18 Die Juden wollten nun von ihm nicht glauben, daß er blind gewesen und sehend geworden sei, bis sie schließlich die Eltern des Sehendgewordenen riefen

The Jews, however, did not believe the statement concerning him--that he had been blind and had obtained his sight--until they called his parents and asked them,

19 und sie fragten: »Ist dies euer Sohn, der, wie ihr behauptet, blind geboren worden ist? Wie kommt es denn, daß er jetzt sehen kann?«

"Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How is it then that he can now see?"

20 Da antworteten seine Eltern: »Wir wissen, daß dies unser Sohn ist und daß er als Blinder geboren worden ist;

"We know," replied the parents, "that this is our son and that he was born blind;

21 wie es aber kommt, daß er jetzt sehen kann, das wissen wir nicht, und wer ihm die Augen geöffnet hat, wissen wir auch nicht. Befragt ihn selbst darüber: er ist alt genug; er wird selbst Auskunft über sich geben.«

but how it is that he can now see or who has opened his eyes we do not know. Ask him himself; he is of full age; he himself will give his own account of it."

22 Das sagten seine Eltern, weil sie sich vor den Juden fürchteten; denn die Juden hatten bereits miteinander abgemacht, daß, wenn jemand Jesus als den Messias anerkenne, er in den Bann getan werden solle.

Such was their answer, because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already settled among themselves that if any one should acknowledge Jesus as the Christ, he should be excluded from the synagogue.

23 Aus diesem Grunde sagten seine Eltern: »Er ist alt genug: fragt ihn selbst!«

That was why his parents said, "He is of full age: ask him himself."

24 So ließen sie denn den Mann, der blind gewesen war, zum zweitenmal rufen und sagten zu ihm: »Gib Gott die Ehre! Wir wissen, daß dieser Mensch ein Sünder ist.«

A second time therefore they called the man who had been blind, and said, "Give God the praise: we know that that man is a sinner."

25 Da antwortete jener: »Ob er ein Sünder ist, weiß ich nicht; eins aber weiß ich, daß ich blind gewesen bin und jetzt sehen kann.«

"Whether he is a sinner or not, I do not know," he replied; "one thing I know--that I was once blind and that now I can see."

26 Da fragten sie ihn noch einmal: »Was hat er mit dir vorgenommen? Auf welche Weise hat er dir die Augen aufgetan?«

"What did he do to you?" they asked; "how did he open your eyes?"

27 Er antwortete ihnen: »Ich habe es euch schon einmal gesagt, doch ihr habt nicht darauf gehört; warum wollt ihr es noch einmal hören? Wollt etwa auch ihr seine Jünger werden?«

"I have told you already," he replied, "and you did not listen to me. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also mean to be disciples of his?"

28 Da schmähten sie ihn und sagten: »Du bist ein Jünger von ihm, wir aber sind Jünger von Mose.

Then they railed at him, and said, "You are that man's disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.

29 Wir wissen, daß Gott zu Mose geredet hat; von diesem aber wissen wir nicht, woher er stammt.«

We know that God spoke to Moses; but as for this fellow we do not know where he comes from."

30 Der Mann gab ihnen zur Antwort: »Darin liegt eben das Verwunderliche, daß ihr nicht wißt, woher er stammt, und mir hat er doch die Augen aufgetan.

"Why, this is marvellous!" the man replied; "you do not know where he comes from, and yet he has opened my eyes!

31 Wir wissen, daß Gott Sünder nicht erhört, sondern nur wenn jemand gottesfürchtig ist und seinen Willen tut, den erhört er.

We know that God does not listen to bad people, but that if any one is a God-fearing man and obeys Him, to him He listens.

32 Von der Weltzeit an hat man noch nicht vernommen, daß jemand einem Blindgeborenen die Augen aufgetan hat. (aiōn g165)

From the beginning of the world such a thing was never heard of as that any one should open the eyes of a man blind from his birth. (aiōn g165)

33 Wenn dieser Mann nicht von Gott her wäre, so vermöchte er nichts zu tun.«

Had that man not come from God, he could have done nothing."

34 Sie antworteten ihm: »Du bist ganz in Sünden geboren, und du willst uns Lehren geben?« Und sie stießen ihn (aus der Gemeinde der Gesetzesfrommen) aus.

"You," they replied, "were wholly begotten and born in sin, and do you teach us?" And they put him out of the synagogue.

35 Jesus erfuhr von seiner Ausstoßung und sagte zu ihm, als er ihn antraf: »Glaubst du an den Sohn Gottes?«

Jesus heard that they had done this. So having found him, He asked him, "Do you believe in the Son of God?"

36 Jener gab zur Antwort: »Herr, wer ist denn das? Ich möchte gern an ihn glauben.«

"Who is He, Sir?" replied the man. "Tell me, so that I may believe in Him."

37 Jesus antwortete ihm: »Du hast ihn gesehen, und der mit dir redet, der ist es!«

"You have seen Him," said Jesus; "and not only so: He is now speaking to you."

38 Jener sagte: »Ich glaube, Herr!« und warf sich vor ihm nieder.

"I believe, Sir," he said. And he threw himself at His feet.

39 Nun sagte Jesus: »Zu einer Scheidung bin ich in diese Welt gekommen: die Nichtsehenden sollen sehen können und die Sehenden blind werden.«

"I came into this world," said Jesus, "to judge men, that those who do not see may see, and that those who do see may become blind."

40 Dies hörten einige von den Pharisäern, die sich in seiner Nähe befanden, und fragten ihn: »Sind wir etwa auch blind?«

These words were heard by those of the Pharisees who were present, and they asked Him, "Are we also blind?"

41 Jesus antwortete ihnen: »Wäret ihr blind, so hättet ihr keine Sünde; nun ihr aber behauptet: ›Wir sind sehend‹, so bleibt eure Sünde!«

"If you were blind," answered Jesus, "you would have no sin; but as a matter of fact you boast that you see. So your sin remains!"
