Job 30
1 »Jetzt aber lachen über mich auch solche, die jünger an Jahren sind als ich, deren Väter ich nicht gewürdigt habe, sie neben den Wachhunden meines Kleinviehs anzustellen.
But now they who are younger than I in years laugh at me, whose fathers I scorned to put as equals with the dogs of my flocks.
2 Wozu hätte mir auch die Kraft ihrer Hände nützen können? Bei ihnen war ja die volle Rüstigkeit verlorengegangen.
Yea, what possible use can the strength of their hands be unto me, over whom old age hath passed fruitlessly?
3 Durch Mangel und Hunger erschöpft, nagen sie das dürre Land ab, die unfruchtbare und öde Steppe;
Who suffer for want and famine in solitude; who flee into the wilderness [where all is] darkness, ruin, and desolation;
4 sie pflücken sich Melde am Buschwerk ab, und die Ginsterwurzel ist ihr Brot.
Who crop off mallows by the bushes, and have broom-bush roots as their bread;
5 Aus der Gemeinde werden sie ausgestoßen: man schreit über sie wie über Diebe.
Who are driven forth from among [men], who are shouted after as though they were thieves,
6 In schauerlichen Klüften müssen sie wohnen, in Erdlöchern und Felshöhlen;
To dwell in the caverns of the valleys, in holes of the earth, and on naked cliffs.
7 zwischen Sträuchern brüllen sie, unter Dorngestrüpp halten sie Zusammenkünfte:
Among the bushes they shriek; under briers they are huddled together,
8 verworfenes und ehrloses Gesindel, das man aus dem Lande hinausgepeitscht hat.
The children of the worthless, yea, the children of the nameless, who were outcasts from the land.
9 Und jetzt bin ich ihr Spottlied geworden und diene ihrem Gerede zur Kurzweil.
But now I am become their song, and I am become a byword unto them.
10 Mit Abscheu halten sie sich fern von mir und scheuen sich nicht, vor mir auszuspeien;
They loathe me, they keep themselves far from me, and from my face they withhold not their spittle.
11 weil Gott meine Bogensehne abgespannt und mich niedergebeugt hat, lassen sie den Zügel vor mir schießen.
Because he hath loosened the cord of my bow, and afflicted me, they have also cast off the bridle before me.
12 Zu meiner Rechten erhebt sich die Brut; sie stoßen meine Füße weg und schütten ihre Unheilsstraßen gegen mich auf.
Against my right hand rise up this swarm of worthless youths: they push away my feet, and they level against me their calamity-bringing paths.
13 Meinen Pfad haben sie aufgerissen, auf meinen Sturz arbeiten sie hin, niemand tut ihnen Einhalt.
They destroy my footpath, they help forward my downfall, without any one to aid them.
14 Wie durch einen breiten Mauerriß kommen sie heran, durch die Trümmer wälzen sie sich daher:
As [through] a broad breach they come: amidst a loud noise they rolled themselves along.
15 ein Schreckensheer hat sich gegen mich gekehrt; wie vom Sturmwind wird meine Ehre weggerafft, und wie eine Wolke ist mein Glück vorübergezogen!«
Terrors have turned their face against me; they chase like the wind my glory: and like a cloud is my happiness passed away.
16 »So verblutet sich denn jetzt das Herz in mir: die Tage des Elends halten mich in ihrer Gewalt.
And now my soul is poured out over me; the days of affliction have seized on me;
17 Die Nacht bohrt in meinen Gebeinen und löst sie von mir ab, und die an mir nagenden Schmerzen schlafen nicht.
All night it holloweth out my bones out of my body; and my pursuers take no rest.
18 Durch Allgewalt ist mein Gewand entstellt: so eng wie mein Unterkleid umschließt es mich.
Through the Almlghty's power is my garment made unknown: like the opening of my coat hath he enclosed me.
19 Gott hat mich in den Kot geworfen, und ich bin (an Ansehen) dem Staub und der Asche gleichgestellt.
He hath cast me into the mire, and I am become like dust and ashes.
20 Schreie ich zu dir, so antwortest du mir nicht; trete ich vor dich hin, so achtest du nicht auf mich:
I cry aloud unto thee, but thou answerest me not: I stand up, and thou fixest thy regard against me.
21 du hast dich mir in einen erbarmungslosen Feind verwandelt; mit deiner starken Hand bekämpfst du mich.
Thou art changed into a cruel master toward me: with the strength of thy hand thou assailest me.
22 Du hebst mich auf (die Fittiche) des Sturmwindes empor, läßt mich dahinfahren und im Sturmestosen vergehen.
Thou liftest me up to the wind; thou causest me to pass away, and dissolvest in me all wise counsel.
23 Ja, ich weiß es: in den Tod willst du mich heimführen und in das Versammlungshaus aller Lebenden!«
For I know that thou wilt bring me back to death, and to the house of assembly for all the living.
24 »Doch streckt man nicht beim Ertrinken die Hand (nach Rettung) aus, und erhebt man beim Versinken nicht darob einen Hilferuf?
But doth not a man stretch out his hand among ruins? or doth one not cry out therefrom [for help] when he meeteth his downfall?
25 Habe ich denn nicht um den geweint, der harte Tage durchzumachen hatte, und ist mein Herz nicht um den Armen bekümmert gewesen?
Did I not weep for him that was hard pressed by misfortune? was not my soul grieved for the needy?
26 Ja, auf Glück habe ich gewartet, aber Unheil kam; und ich harrte auf Licht, aber es kam Finsternis.
That I hoped for good, but there came evil; and I waited for light, and there came darkness!
27 Mein Inneres ist in Aufruhr ohne Unterlaß, Leidenstage haben mich überfallen.
My bowels heave, and rest not: the days of affliction have overcome me.
28 In Trauer gehe ich einher ohne Sonne; ich stehe in der versammelten Gemeinde auf und schreie;
I walk about mournfully without sunlight: when I rise up, in the assembly, I cry with pain.
29 den (heulenden) Schakalen bin ich ein Bruder geworden und den (klagenden) Straußen ein Genosse.
I am a brother to [howling] monsters, and a companion to ostriches.
30 Meine Haut löst sich, schwarz geworden, von mir ab, und mein Gebein ist von Fieberglut ausgedörrt.
My skin hangeth down black from me, and my bones are burnt from heat.
31 So ist denn mein Zitherspiel zum Trauerlied geworden und meine Schalmei zu Tönen der Klage!«
And thus is changed to mourning my harp, and my pipe to the sound of weeping.
