Job 22
1 Da nahm Eliphas von Theman das Wort und sagte:
Then Eliphaz the Thaemanite answered and said,
2 »Kann wohl ein Mensch Gott Nutzen schaffen? Nein, nur sich selbst nützt der Fromme.
Is it not the Lord that teaches understanding and knowledge?
3 Hat der Allmächtige Vorteil davon, wenn du rechtschaffen bist? Oder bringt es ihm Gewinn, wenn du unsträflich wandelst?
For what matters it to the Lord, if thou wert blameless in [thy] works? or is it profitable that thou shouldest perfect thy way?
4 Meinst du, wegen deiner Gottesfurcht strafe er dich und gehe deshalb mit dir ins Gericht?
Wilt thou maintain and plead thine own cause? and will he enter into judgment with thee?
5 Ist nicht vielmehr deine Bosheit groß, und sind nicht deine Verschuldungen ohne Ende?«
Is not thy wickedness abundant, and thy sins innumerable?
6 »Denn oftmals hast du deine Volksgenossen ohne Grund gepfändet und den Halbnackten ihre Kleider ausziehen lassen;
And thou hast taken security of thy brethren for nothing, and hast taken away the clothing of the naked.
7 dem vor Durst Lechzenden hast du keinen Trunk Wasser gereicht und dem Hungrigen ein Stück Brot versagt.
Neither hast thou given water to the thirsty to drink, but hast taken away the morsel of the hungry.
8 Dem Manne der Faust – ihm gehörte das Land, und nur die Hochangesehenen durften darin wohnen.
And thou hast accepted the persons of some; and thou hast established those [that were already settled] on the earth.
9 Witwen ließest du mit leeren Händen gehen, und alles, was den Waisen zu Gebote stand, wurde zugrunde gerichtet.
But thou hast sent widows away empty, and has afflicted orphans.
10 Darum bist du jetzt rings von Schlingen umgeben, und jäher Schrecken versetzt dich in Angst;
Therefore snares have compassed thee, and disastrous war has troubled thee.
11 dein Licht ist Finsternis geworden, so daß du nicht sehen kannst, und eine Wasserflut bedeckt dich.«
The light has proved darkness to thee, and water has covered thee on thy lying down.
12 »Ist Gott nicht so hoch wie der Himmel? Und schaue den Gipfel der Sterne an, wie hoch sie ragen!
Does not he that dwells in the high places observe? and has he not brought down the proud?
13 Und da sagst du: ›Was weiß denn Gott? Kann er durch Wolkendunkel hindurch Gericht halten?
And thou has said, What does the Mighty One know? does he judge in the dark?
14 Dichte Wolken sind ihm eine Hülle, so daß er nichts sehen kann, und nur die Räume des Himmelsgewölbes durchwandelt er.‹
A cloud is his hiding-place, and he shall not be seen; and he passes through the circle of heaven.
15 Willst du die Bahn der Vorwelt innehalten, auf der die Männer des Frevels einst gewandelt sind?
Wilt thou [not] mark the old way, which righteous men have trodden?
16 Sie, die vor der Zeit weggerafft wurden – der feste Boden unter ihnen zerfloß zu einem Strom –;
who were seized before their time: their foundations [are as] an overflowing stream.
17 die zu Gott sagten: ›Bleibe fern von uns!‹ und ›was der Allmächtige ihnen antun könne?‹
Who say, What will the Lord do to us? or what will the Almighty bring upon us?
18 Und doch hatte er ihre Häuser mit Segen gefüllt. Aber die Denkweise der Frevler bleibe fern von mir!
Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel for the wicked is far from him.
19 Die Gerechten sehen es und freuen sich, und der Schuldlose ruft ihnen spottend zu:
The righteous have seen [it], and laughed, and the blameless one has derided [them].
20 ›Fürwahr, unsere Widersacher sind vernichtet, und ihre Hinterlassenschaft hat das Feuer verzehrt!‹«
Verily their substance has been utterly destroyed, and the fire shall devour what is left of their [property].
21 »Befreunde dich doch mit Gott und halte Frieden mit ihm! Dadurch wird dein Geschick sich heilsam gestalten.
Be firm, I pray thee, if thou canst endure; then thy fruit shall prosper.
22 Nimm doch Belehrung aus seinem Munde an und laß seine Worte in deinem Herzen wohnen!
And receive a declaration from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.
23 Wenn du dich zum Allmächtigen bekehrst, so wirst du wieder aufgebaut werden; wenn du die Sünde aus deinen Zelten entfernst –
And if thou shalt turn and humble thyself before the Lord, thou hast [thus] removed unrighteousness far from thy habitation.
24 ja, wirf das Golderz von dir in den Staub und Ophirs Gold unter die Kiesel der Bäche,
Thou shalt lay up for thyself [treasure] in a heap on the rock; and Sophir [shall be] as the rock of the torrent.
25 daß der Allmächtige dein Golderz ist und Silber dir sein Gesetz –:
So the Almighty shall be thy helper from enemies, and he shall bring thee forth pure as silver that has been tried by fire.
26 ja, dann wirst du dich auf den Allmächtigen getrost verlassen und zu Gott dein Angesicht vertrauensvoll erheben.
Then shalt thou have boldness before the Lord, looking up cheerfully to heaven.
27 Flehst du zu ihm, so wird er dich erhören, und deine Gelübde wirst du bezahlen können;
And he shall hear thee when thou prayest to him, and he shall grant thee [power] to pay thy vows.
28 nimmst du dir etwas vor, so wird es dir gelingen, und Licht wird über deinen Wegen strahlen.
And he shall establish to thee again a habitation of righteousness and there shall be light upon thy paths.
29 Wenn sie abwärts führen, so rufst du: ›Empor!‹, und dem Niedergeschlagenen hilft er auf.
Because thou hast humbled thyself; and thou shalt say, [Man] has behaved proudly, but he shall save him that is of lowly eyes.
30 Selbst den Nichtschuldlosen wird er entkommen lassen, und zwar wird er durch die Reinheit deiner Hände entkommen.«
He shall deliver the innocent, and do thou save thyself by thy pure hands.
